Threshold bounce -- occupancy-dependent modulation of the discriminating threshold in silicon detectors

The front-end electronics of silicon detectors are typically designed to ensure optimal noise performance for the expected input charge. A combination of preamplifiers and shaper circuits result in a nontrivial response of the front-end to injected charge, and the magnitude of the response may be sizeable in readout windows subsequent to that in which the charge was initially injected. The modulation of the discriminator threshold due to the superposition of the front-end response across multiple readout windows is coined "threshold bounce". In this paper, we report a measurement of threshold bounce using silicon modules built for the Phase-II Upgrade of the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. These modules utilize ATLAS Binary Chips for their hit readout. The measurement was performed using a micro-focused 15 keV photon beam at the Diamond Light Source synchrotron. The effect of the choice of photon flux and discriminator threshold on the magnitude of the threshold bounce is studied. A Monte Carlo simulation which accounts for the front-end behaviour of the silicon modules is developed, and its predicted hit efficiency is found to be in good agreement with the measured hit efficiency.

Test beam measurement of ATLAS ITk Short Strip module at warm and cold operational temperature

This study is focused on an investigation of the performance of the Short Strip module developed by the ATLAS Inner Tracker (ITk) strip collaboration using electron beams of energy 5.4 GeV and 5.8 GeV at the DESY-II Testbeam Facility. The noise at +30 C and -30 C was measured. The ratio of the two measurements is compared with a circuit-model calculation. The measured noise at -30 C is compared with the maximum noise that would correspond to an acceptable signal-to-noise ratio after the expected radiation damage from operation at HL-LHC. The measured charge distributions at +30 C and -30 C are compared with GEANT4 simulations. The detection efficiency and noise-occupancy were measured as a function of threshold at both +30 C and -30 C. The average cluster width was measured as a function of threshold. Scans of detection efficiency versus threshold at different delay settings were used to reconstruct the pulse shape in time. The resulting pulse shape was compared with a circuit model calculation.

Spatial resolution and efficiency of prototype sensors for the LHCb VELO Upgrade

A comprehensive study of the spatial resolution and detection efficiency of sensor prototypes developed for the LHCb VELO upgrade is presented. Data samples were collected at the CERN SPS H8 beam line using a hadron mixture of protons and pions with momenta of approximately 180 GeV/c. The sensor performance was characterised using both irradiated and non-irradiated sensors. Irradiated samples were subjected to a maximum fluence of $\mathrm{8\times10^{15}~1~MeV~n_{eq}~cm^{-2}}$, of both protons and neutrons. The spatial resolution is measured comparing the detected hits to the position as predicted by tracks reconstructed by the Timepix3 telescope. The resolution is presented for different applied bias voltages and track angles, sensor thickness and implant size.

Charge collection properties of prototype sensors for the LHCb VELO upgrade

An extensive sensor testing campaign is presented, dedicated to measuring the charge collection properties of prototype candidates for the Vertex Locator (VELO) detector for the upgraded LHCb experiment. The charge collection is measured with sensors exposed to fluences of up to $8 \times 10^{15}~1~\mathrm{\,Me\kern -0.1em V}~ \mathrm{ \,n_{eq}}~{\mathrm{ \,cm}}^{-2}$, as well as with nonirradiated prototypes. The results are discussed, including the influence of different levels of irradiation and bias voltage on the charge collection properties. Charge multiplication is observed on some sensors that were nonuniformly irradiated with 24 GeV protons, to the highest fluence levels. An analysis of the charge collection near the guard ring region is also presented, revealing significant differences between the sensor prototypes. All tested sensor variants succeed in collecting the minimum required charge of 6000 electrons after the exposure to the maximum fluence.

Measurement of charged hadron production in $Z$-tagged jets in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV

The production of charged hadrons within jets recoiling against a $Z$ boson is measured in proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV recorded by the LHCb experiment. The charged-hadron structure of the jet is studied longitudinally and transverse to the jet axis for jets with transverse momentum $p_{\mathrm{T}}>20$ GeV and in the pseudorapidity range $2.5<η<4$. These are the first measurements of jet hadronization at these forward rapidities and also the first where the jet is produced in association with a $Z$ boson. In contrast to previous hadronization measurements at the Large Hadron Collider, which are dominated by gluon jets, these measurements probe predominantly light-quark jets which are found to be more longitudinally and transversely collimated with respect to the jet axis when compared to the previous gluon dominated measurements. Therefore, these results provide valuable information on differences between quarks and gluons regarding nonperturbative hadronization dynamics.

A search for $\itΞ^{++}_{cc} \rightarrow D^{+} p K^{-} π^{+}$ decays

A search for the $\itΞ^{++}_{cc}$ baryon through the $\itΞ^{++}_{cc} \rightarrow D^{+} p K^{-} π^{+}$ decay is performed with a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.7 $\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ recorded by the LHCb experiment in $pp$ collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. No significant signal is observed in the mass range from the kinematic threshold of the decay to 3800 $\mathrm{MeV}/c^{2}$. An upper limit is set on the ratio of branching fractions $\mathcal{R} = \frac{\mathcal{B}(\itΞ^{++}_{cc} \rightarrow D^{+} p K^{-} π^{+})}{\mathcal{B}(\itΞ^{++}_{cc} \rightarrow Λ^{+}_{c} K^{-} π^{+}π^{+})}$ with $\mathcal{R} < 1.7 \hspace{2pt} (2.1) \times 10^{-2}$ at the 90% (95%) confidence level at the known mass of the $\itΞ^{++}_{cc}$ state.

Precision measurement of the $Λ_c^+$, $Ξ_c^+$ and $Ξ_c^0$ baryon lifetimes

We report measurements of the lifetimes of the $Λ_c^+$, $Ξ_c^+$ and $Ξ_c^0$ charm baryons using proton-proton collision data at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8\tev, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb$^{-1}$, collected by the LHCb experiment. The charm baryons are reconstructed through the decays $Λ_c^+\to pK^-π^+$, $Ξ_c^+\to pK^-π^+$ and $Ξ_c^0\to pK^-K^-π^+$, and originate from semimuonic decays of beauty baryons. The lifetimes are measured relative to that of the $D^+$ meson, and are determined to be \begin{align*} τ_{Λ_c^+} &= 203.5\pm1.0\pm1.3\pm1.4~{\rm fs}, \newline τ_{Ξ_c^+} &= 456.8\pm3.5\pm2.9\pm3.1~{\rm fs}, \newline τ_{Ξ_c^0} &= 154.5\pm1.7\pm1.6\pm1.0~{\rm fs}, \end{align*} where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and due to the uncertainty in the $D^+$ lifetime. The measurements are approximately 3--4 times more precise than the current world average values. The $Λ_c^+$ and $Ξ_c^+$ lifetimes are in agreement with previous measurements; however, the $Ξ_c^0$ baryon lifetime is approximately 3.3 standard deviations larger than the world average value.

Near-threshold $D\bar{D}$ spectroscopy and observation of a new charmonium state

Using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9$fb^{-1}$, collected with the~LHCb detector between 2011 and 2018, a new narrow charmonium state, the $X(3842)$ resonance, is observed in the decay modes $X(3842)\rightarrow D^0\bar{D}^0$ and $X(3842)\rightarrow D^+D^-$. The mass and the natural width of this state are measured to be \begin{eqnarray*} m_{X(3842)} & = & 3842.71 \pm 0.16 \pm 0.12 MeV/c^2\,, Γ_{X(3842)} & = & 2.79 \pm 0.51 \pm 0.35 MeV\,, \end{eqnarray*} where the first uncertainty is statistical and the~second is systematic. The observed mass and narrow natural width suggest the~interpretation of the new state as the~unobserved spin\nobreakdash-3 $ψ_3\mathrm{\left(1^3D_3\right)}$ charmonium state. In addition, prompt hadroproduction of the $ψ(3770)$~and $χ_{c2}(3930)$ states is observed for the first time, and the parameters of these~states are measured to be \begin{eqnarray*} m_{ψ(3770)} & = & 3778.1 \pm 0.7 \pm 0.6 MeV/c^2\,, m_{χ_{c2}(3930)} & = & 3921.9 \pm 0.6 \pm 0.2 MeV/c^2\,, Γ_{χ_{c2}(3930)} & = &36.6 \pm 1.9 \pm 0.9 MeV\,, \end{eqnarray*} where the first uncertainty is statistical and the~second is systematic.

First observation of the radiative decay $Λ_{b}^{0} \to Λγ$

The radiative decay $Λ_{b}^{0} \to Λγ$ is observed for the first time using a data sample of proton-proton collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $1.7\,fb^{-1}$ collected by the LHCb experiment at a center-of-mass energy of $13\,TeV$. Its branching fraction is measured exploiting the $B^{0} \to K^{*0} γ$ decay as a normalization mode and is found to be $\mathcal{B}(Λ_{b}^{0} \to Λγ)= (7.1 \pm 1.5 \pm 0.6 \pm 0.7) \times 10^{-6}$, where the quoted uncertainties are statistical, systematic and systematic from external inputs, respectively. This is the first observation of a radiative decay of a beauty baryon.

Amplitude analysis of the $B_{(s)} \to K^{*0} \overline{K}^{*0}$ decays and measurement of the branching fraction of the $B \to K^{*0} \overline{K}^{*0}$ decay

The $B^0 \to K^{*0} \overline{K}^{*0}$ and $B^0_s \to K^{*0} \overline{K}^{*0}$ decays are studied using proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3fb$^{-1}$. An untagged and time-integrated amplitude analysis of $B^0_{(s)} \to (K^+π^-)(K^-π^+) $ decays in two-body invariant mass regions of 150 MeV$/c^2$ around the $K^{*0}$ mass is performed. A stronger longitudinal polarisation fraction in the ${B^0 \to K^{*0} \overline{K}^{*0}}$ decay, ${f_L = 0.724 \pm 0.051 \,({\rm stat}) \pm 0.016 \,({\rm syst})}$, is observed as compared to ${f_L = 0.240 \pm 0.031 \,({\rm stat}) \pm 0.025 \,({\rm syst})}$ in the ${B^0_s\to K^{*0} \overline{K}^{*0}}$ decay. The ratio of branching fractions of the two decays is measured and used to determine $\mathcal{B}(B^0 \to K^{*0} \overline{K}^{*0}) = (8.0 \pm 0.9 \,({\rm stat}) \pm 0.4 \,({\rm syst})) \times 10^{-7}$.

Search for lepton-universality violation in $B^+\to K^+\ell^+\ell^-$ decays

A measurement of the ratio of branching fractions of the decays $B^+\to K^+μ^+μ^-$ and $B^+\to K^+e^+e^-$ is presented. The proton-proton collision data used correspond to an integrated luminosity of $5.0\,$fb$^{-1}$ recorded with the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of $7$, $8$ and $13\,$TeV. For the dilepton mass-squared range $1.1 < q^2 < 6.0\,$GeV$^2\!/c^4$ the ratio of branching fractions is measured to be $R_K = {0.846\,^{+\,0.060}_{-\,0.054}\,^{+\,0.016}_{-\,0.014}}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. This is the most precise measurement of $R_K$ to date and is compatible with the Standard Model at the level of 2.5 standard deviations.

Dalitz plot analysis of the $D^+\to K^-K^+K^+$ decay

The resonant structure of the doubly Cabibbo-suppressed decay $D^+ \to K^-K^+K^+$ is studied for the first time. The measurement is based on a sample of pp-collision data, collected at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV with the LHCb detector and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2 fb$^-1$. The amplitude analysis of this decay is performed with the isobar model and a phenomenological model based on an effective chiral Lagrangian. In both models the S-wave component in the $K^-K^+$ system is dominant, with a small contribution of the $ϕ(1020)$ meson and a negligible contribution from tensor resonances. The $K^-K^+$ scattering amplitudes for the considered combinations of spin (0,1) and isospin (0,1) of the two-body system are obtained from the Dalitz plot fit with the phenomenological decay amplitude.

Measurement of the ratio of branching fractions of the decays $Λ^0_b\!\toψ(2S) Λ$ and $Λ^0_b\!\to J/ψΛ$

Using $pp$ collisions corresponding to 3$\,\text{fb}^{-1}$ integrated luminosity, recorded by the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8$\,\text{TeV}$, the ratio of branching fractions \begin{align*} \mathcal{B}(Λ^0_b\!\toψ(2S) Λ)/\mathcal{B}(Λ^0_b\!\to J/ψΛ)= 0.513 \pm 0.023\, (\text{stat}) \pm 0.016 \, (\text{syst}) \pm 0.011\, (\mathcal{B}) \end{align*} is determined. The first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic and the third is due to the external branching fractions used.

Measurement of the time-integrated $CP$ asymmetry in $D^0 \rightarrow K^0_S K^0_S$ decays

A measurement of the time-integrated $CP$ asymmetry in $D^0\rightarrow K^0_S K^0_S$ decays is reported. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of about $2$ fb$^{-1}$ collected in 2015-2016 by the LHCb collaboration in $pp$ collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $13$ TeV. The $D^0$ candidate is required to originate from a $D^{\ast +} \rightarrow D^0 π^+$ decay, allowing the determination of the flavour of the $D^0$ meson using the pion charge. The $D^0 \rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}$ decay, which has a well measured $CP$ asymmetry, is used as a calibration channel. The $CP$ asymmetry for $D^0\rightarrow K^0_S K^0_S$ is measured to be \begin{equation*} \mathcal{A}^{CP}(D^0\rightarrow K^0_S K^0_S) = (4.3\pm 3.4\pm 1.0)\%, \end{equation*} where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. This result is combined with the previous LHCb measurement at lower centre-of-mass energies to obtain \begin{equation*} \mathcal{A}^{CP}(D^0\rightarrow K^0_S K^0_S) = (2.3\pm 2.8\pm 0.9)\%. \end{equation*}

Observation of $B_s^0 \to \overline{D}^{*0} ϕ$ and search for $B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 ϕ$ decays

The first observation of the $B_s^0 \to \overline{D}^{*0} ϕ$ decay is reported, with a significance of more than seven standard deviations, from an analysis of $pp$ collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb$^{-1}$, collected with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of $7$ and $8$ TeV. The branching fraction is measured relative to that of the topologically similar decay $B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 π^+π^-$ and is found to be $\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \to \overline{D}^{*0} ϕ) = (3.7 \pm 0.5 \pm 0.3 \pm 0.2) \times 10^{-5}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic, and the third from the branching fraction of the $B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 π^+π^-$ decay. The fraction of longitudinal polarisation in this decay is measured to be ${f_{\rm L} =(73 \pm 15 \pm 3)\%}$. The most precise determination of the branching fraction for the $B_s^0 \to \overline{D}^{0} ϕ$ decay is also obtained, $\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \to \overline{D}^{0} ϕ) = (3.0 \pm 0.3 \pm 0.2 \pm 0.2) \times 10^{-5}$. An upper limit, $\mathcal{B}(B^0 \to \overline{D}^{0} ϕ) < 2.0 \ (2.2) \times 10^{-6}$ at $90\%$ (95\%) confidence level is set. A constraint on the $ω-ϕ$ mixing angle $δ$ is set at $|δ| < 5.2^\circ~ (5.5^\circ)$ at $90\%$ ($95\%$) confidence level.

Observation of the decay $B_s^0 \to \overline{D}^0 K^+ K^-$

The first observation of the $B_s^0 \to \overline{D}^0 K^+ K^-$ decay is reported, together with the most precise branching fraction measurement of the mode $B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 K^+ K^-$. The results are obtained from an analysis of $pp$ collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $3.0~\textrm{fb}^{-1}$. The data were collected with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of $7$ and $8$ TeV. The branching fraction of the $B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 K^+ K^-$ decay is measured relative to that of the decay $B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 π^+ π^-$ to be $$\frac{\mathcal{B}(B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 K^+ K^-)}{\mathcal{B}(B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 π^+ π^-)} = (6.9 \pm 0.4 \pm 0.3)\%,$$ where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. The measured branching fraction of the $B_s^0 \to \overline{D}^0 K^+ K^-$ decay mode relative to that of the corresponding $B^0$ decay is $$\frac{\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \to \overline{D}^0 K^+ K^-)}{\mathcal{B}(B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 K^+ K^-)} = (93.0 \pm 8.9 \pm 6.9)\%.$$ Using the known branching fraction of ${B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 π^+ π^-}$, the values of ${{\mathcal B}(B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 K^+ K^- )=(6.1 \pm 0.4 \pm 0.3 \pm 0.3) \times 10^{-5}}$, and ${{\cal B}(B_s^0 \to \overline{D}^0 K^+ K^-)=}$ $(5.7 \pm 0.5 \pm 0.4 \pm 0.5) \times 10^{-5}$ are obtained, where the third uncertainties arise from the branching fraction of the decay modes ${B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 π^+ π^-}$ and $B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 K^+ K^-$, respectively.

Central exclusive production of $J/ψ$ and $ψ(2S)$ mesons in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13~$TeV

Measurements are reported of the central exclusive production of \jpsi and \psitwos mesons in $pp$ collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. Backgrounds are significantly reduced compared to previous measurements made at lower energies through the use of new forward shower counters. The products of the cross-sections and the branching fractions for the decays to dimuons, where both muons are within the pseudorapidity range $2.0<η<4.5$, are measured to be $$ \begin{array}{rcl} σ_{J/ψ\rightarrowμ^+μ^-}&=&435 \pm 18 \pm 17 \pm 16 {\rm \ pb},\\ σ_{ψ(2S)\rightarrowμ^+μ^-}&=&11.1 \pm 1.1 \pm 0.3 \pm 0.4 {\rm \ pb}.\\ \end{array} $$ The first uncertainties are statistical, the second are systematic, and the third are due to the luminosity determination. The cross-sections are also measured differentially for meson rapidities between 2.0 and 4.5. Good agreement is observed with theoretical predictions. Photoproduction cross-sections are derived and compared to previous experiments, and a deviation from a pure power-law extrapolation of lower energy data is observed.
