Polariton fluids for analogue gravity physics

Analogue gravity enables the study of fields on curved spacetimes in the laboratory. There are numerous experimental platforms in which amplification at the event horizon or the ergoregion has been observed. Here, we demonstrate how optically generating a defect in a polariton microcavity enables the creation of one- and two-dimensional, transsonic fluid flows. We show that this highly tuneable method permits the creation of sonic horizons. Furthermore, we present a rotating geometry akin to the water-wave bathtub vortex. These experiments usher-in the possibility of observing stimulated as well as spontaneous amplification by the Hawking, Penrose and Zeld'ovich effects in fluids of light.

Effect of photonic spin-orbit coupling on the topological edge modes of a Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chain

We study the effect of photonic spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in micropillar lattices on the topological edge states of a one-dimensional chain with a zigzag geometry, corresponding to the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model equipped with an additional internal degree of freedom. The system combines the strong hopping anisotropy of the $p$-type pillar modes with the large TE-TM splitting in Bragg microcavities. By resolving the photoluminescence emission in energy and polarization we probe the effects of the resulting SOC on the spatial and spectral properties of the edge modes. We find that the edge modes feature a fine structure of states that penetrate by different amounts into the bulk of the chain, depending on the strength of the SOC terms present, thereby opening a route to manipulation of the topological states in the system.

PC-symmetry-protected edge states in interacting driven-dissipative bosonic systems

A main objective of topological photonics is the design of disorder-resilient optical devices. Many prospective applications would benefit from nonlinear effects, which not only are naturally present in real systems but also are needed for switching in computational processes, while the underlying particle interactions are a key ingredient for the manifestation of genuine quantum effects. A particularly attractive switching mechanism of dynamical systems are infinite-period bifurcations into limit cycles, as these set on with a finite amplitude. Here we describe how to realize this switching mechanism by combining attractive and repulsive particle interactions in a driven-dissipative Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model, such as realized in excitonic lasers and condensates so that the system displays a nonhermitian combination of parity and charge-conjugation (PC) symmetry. We show that this symmetry survives in the nonlinear case and induces infinite-period and limit-cycle bifurcations (distinct from a Hopf bifurcation) where the system switches from a symmetry-breaking stationary state into a symmetry-protected power-oscillating state of finite amplitude. These protected dynamical solutions display a number of characteristic features, among which are their finite amplitude at onset, their arbitrary long oscillation period close to threshold, and the symmetry of their frequency spectrum which provides a tuneable frequency comb. Phases with different transition scenarios are separated by exceptional points in the stability spectrum, involving nonhermitian degeneracies of symmetry-protected excitations.

Exciton Polaritons in a Two-Dimensional Lieb Lattice with Spin-Orbit Coupling

We study exciton-polaritons in a two-dimensional Lieb lattice of micropillars. The energy spectrum of the system features two flat bands formed from $S$ and $P_{x,y}$ photonic orbitals, into which we trigger bosonic condensation under high power excitation. The symmetry of the orbital wave functions combined with photonic spin-orbit coupling gives rise to emission patterns with pseudospin texture in the flat band condensates. Our work shows the potential of polariton lattices for emulating flat band Hamiltonians with spin-orbit coupling, orbital degrees of freedom and interactions.

Polariton pattern formation and photon statistics of the associated emission

We report on the formation of a diverse family of transverse spatial polygon patterns in a microcavity polariton fluid under coherent driving by a blue-detuned pump. Patterns emerge spontaneously as a result of energy-degenerate polariton-polariton scattering from the pump state to interfering high order vortex and antivortex modes, breaking azimuthal symmetry. The interplay between a multimode parametric instability and intrinsic optical bistability leads to a sharp spike in the value of second order coherence $g^{(2)}(0)$ of the emitted light, which we attribute to the strongly superlinear kinetics of the underlying scattering processes driving the formation of patterns. We show numerically by means of a linear stability analysis how the growth of parametric instabilities in our system can lead to spontaneous symmetry breaking, predicting the formation and competition of different pattern states in good agreement with experimental observations.

Real-space collapse of a polariton condensate

Polaritons in microcavities are versatile quasi-2D bosonic particles with a high degree of coherence and strong nonlinearities, thanks to their hybrid light-matter character. In their condensed form, they display striking quantum hydrodynamic features analogous to atomic Bose-Einstein condensates, such as long-range order coherence, superfluidity and quantized vorticity. Their variegated dispersive and dissipative properties, however, set significant differences from their atomic counterpart. In this work, we report the unique phenomenology that is observed when a pulse of light impacts the polariton vacuum: the condensate that is instantaneously formed does not splash in real space but instead coheres into an enigmatic structure, featuring concentric rings and, most notably, a sharp and bright peak at the center. Using a state-of-the-art ultrafast imaging with 50 fs time steps, we are able to track the dynamics of the polariton mean-field wavefunction in both real and reciprocal space. The observation of the real-space collapse of the condensate into an extremely localized---resolution limited---peak is at odd with the repulsive interactions of polaritons and their positive effective mass. An unconventional mechanism is therefore at play to account for our observations. Our modeling suggests that self-trapping due to a local heating of the crystal lattice---that can be described as a collective polaron formed by a polariton condensate---could be involved. These observations hint at the fascinating fluid dynamics of polaritons in conditions of extreme intensities and ultrafast times.

Spin Textures of Polariton Condensates in a Tunable Microcavity with Strong Spin-Orbit Interaction

We report an extended family of spin textures in coexisting modes of zero-dimensional polariton condensates spatially confined in tunable open microcavity structures. The coupling between photon spin and angular momentum, which is enhanced in the open cavity structures, leads to new eigenstates of the polariton condensates carrying quantised spin vortices. Depending on the strength and anisotropy of the cavity confinement potential and the strength of the spin-orbit coupling, which can be tuned via the excitonic/photonic fractions, the condensate emissions exhibit either spin-vortex-like patterns or linear polarization, in good agreement with theoretical modelling.

On multicomponent polariton superfluidity in the optical parametric oscillator regime

Superfluidity, the ability of a liquid or gas to flow with zero viscosity, is one of the most remarkable implications of collective quantum coherence. In equilibrium systems like liquid 4He and ultracold atomic gases, superfluid behaviour conjugates diverse yet related phenomena, such as persistency of metastable flow in multiply connected geometries and the existence of a critical velocity for frictionless flow when hitting a static defect. The link between these different aspects of superfluid behaviour is far less clear in driven-dissipative systems displaying collective coherence, such as microcavity polaritons, which raises important questions about their concurrency. With a joint theoretical and experimental study, we show that the scenario is particularly rich for polaritons driven in a three-fluid collective coherent regime so-called optical parametric oscillator. On the one hand, the spontaneous macroscopic coherence following the phase locking of the signal and idler fluids has been shown to be responsible for their simultaneous quantized flow metastability. On the other hand, we show here that pump, signal and idler have distinct responses when hitting a static defect; while the signal displays hardly appreciable modulations, the ones appearing in pump and idler are determined by their mutual coupling due to nonlinear and parametric processes.

Spatial patterns of dissipative polariton solitons in semiconductor microcavities

Semiconductor microcavities operating in the polaritonic regime are highly non-linear, high speed systems due to the unique half-light, half-matter nature of polaritons. Here, we report for the first time the observation of propagating multi-soliton polariton patterns consisting of multi-peak structures either along (x) or perpendicular to (y) the direction of propagation. Soliton arrays of up to 5 solitons are observed, with the number of solitons controlled by the size or power of the triggering laser pulse. The break-up along the x direction occurs due to interplay of bistability, negative effective mass and polariton-polariton scattering, while in the y direction the break-up results from nonlinear phase-dependent interactions of propagating fronts. We show the experimental results are in good agreement with numerical modelling. Our observations are a step towards ultrafast all-optical signal processing using sequences of solitons as bits of information.

Control and ultrafast dynamics of a two-fluid polariton switch

We investigate the cross-interactions in a two-component polariton quantum fluid coherently driven by two independent pumping lasers tuned at different energies and momenta. We show that both the hysteresis cycles and the ON/OFF threshold of one polariton signal can be entirely controlled by a second polariton fluid. Furthermore, we study the ultrafast switching dynamics of a driven polariton state, demonstrating the ability to control the polariton population with an external laser pulse, in less than a few picoseconds.

Drag in a resonantly driven polariton fluid

We study the linear response of a coherently driven polariton fluid in the pump-only configuration scattering against a point-like defect and evaluate analytically the drag force exerted by the fluid on the defect. When the system is excited near the bottom of the lower polariton dispersion, the sign of the interaction-renormalised pump detuning classifies the collective excitation spectra in three different categories [C. Ciuti and I. Carusotto, physica status solidi (b) 242, 2224 (2005)]: linear for zero, diffusive-like for positive, and gapped for negative detuning. We show that both cases of zero and positive detuning share a qualitatively similar crossover of the drag force from the subsonic to the supersonic regime as a function of the fluid velocity, with a critical velocity given by the speed of sound found for the linear regime. In contrast, for gapped spectra, we find that the critical velocity exceeds the speed of sound. In all cases, the residual drag force in the subcritical regime depends on the polariton lifetime only. Also, well below the critical velocity, the drag force varies linearly with the polariton lifetime, in agreement with previous work [E. Cancellieri et al., Phys. Rev. B 82, 224512 (2010)], where the drag was determined numerically for a finite-size defect.

Multistability of a two component exciton-polariton fluid

We study the stability of a multicomponent exciton-polariton fluid under resonant excitation within the linear response approximation of a generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We show that, two spatially homogeneous and independently tunable pumping lasers produce, for the same values of the system parameters, up to three stable solutions. Three-stability is understood by noting that the cavity can be either little or highly populated and, in this second case, the largest part of the population lies in either one of the two components. Moreover, we show that easily tunable multistable hysteresis loops can be performed by the system.

Frictionless flow in a binary polariton superfluid

We study the properties of a binary microcavity polariton superfluid coherently injected by two lasers. The crossover from the supersonic to subsonic regime, where motion is frictionless, is described by evaluating the Bogoliubov spectra. We show that according to the Landau criteria, the coupling between the two components precludes the existence of superfluidity just for one component but not for the other. By analysing the drag force exerted on a defect, we give a recipe to experimentally address the crossover from the supersonic to the subsonic regime.

Generation of two identical photons from a quantum dot in a microcavity

We propose and characterize a two-photon emitter in a highly polarised, monochromatic and directional beam, realized by means of a quantum dot embedded in a linearly polarized cavity. In our scheme, the cavity frequency is tuned to half the frequency of the biexciton (two excitons with opposite spins) and largely detuned from the excitons thanks to the large biexciton binding energy. We show how the emission can be Purcell enhanced by several orders of magnitude into the two-photon channel for available experimental systems.

Superflow of resonantly driven polaritons against a defect

In the linear response approximation, coherently driven microcavity polaritons in the pump-only configuration are expected to satisfy the Landau criterion for superfluidity at either strong enough pump powers or small flow velocities. Here, we solve non-perturbatively the time dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation describing the resonantly-driven polariton system. We show that, even in the limit of asymptotically large densities, where in linear response approximation the system satisfies the Landau criterion, the fluid always experiences a residual drag force when flowing through the defect. We illustrate the result in terms of the polariton lifetime being finite, finding that the equilibrium limit of zero drag can only be recovered in the case of perfect microcavities. In general, both the drag force exerted by the defect on the fluid, as well as the height of Cerenkov radiation, and the percentage of particles scattered by the defect, show a smooth crossover rather than a sharp threshold-like behaviour typical of superfluids which obey the Landau criterion.

Linear and nonlinear coupling of quantum dots in microcavities

We discuss the topical and fundamental problem of strong-coupling between a quantum dot an the single mode of a microcavity. We report seminal quantitative descriptions of experimental data, both in the linear and in the nonlinear regimes, based on a theoretical model that includes pumping and quantum statistics.

Effect of pure dephasing on the Jaynes-Cummings nonlinearities

We study the effect of pure dephasing on the strong-coupling between a quantum dot and the single mode of a microcavity in the nonlinear regime. We show that the photoluminescence spectrum of the system has a robust tendency to display triplet structures, instead of the expected Jaynes-Cummings pairs of doublets at the incommensurate frequencies $\pm(\sqrt{n}\pm\sqrt{n-1})$ for integer $n$. We show that current experimental works may already manifest signatures of single photon nonlinearities.

Optimal generation of indistinguishable photons from non-identical artificial molecules

We show theoretically that nearly indistinguishable photons can be generated with non-identical semiconductor-based sources. The use of virtual Raman transitions and the optimization of the external driving fields increases the tolerance to spectral inhomogeneity to the meV energy range. A trade-off emerges between photon indistinguishability and efficiency in the photon-generation process. Linear (quadratic) dependence of the coincidence probability within the Hong-Ou-Mandel setup is found with respect to the dephasing (relaxation) rate in the semiconductor sources.
