Structural Transition Models for a class of Irreversible Aggregates

A progress report on two recent theoretical approaches proposed to understand the physics of irreversible fractal aggregates showing up a structural transition from a rather dense to a more multibranched growth is presented. In the first approach the transition is understood by solving the Poisson equation on a squared lattice. The second approach is based on the discretization of the Biharmonic equation. Within these models the transition appears when the growth velocity at the fractal surface presents a minimum. The effects of the surrounding medium and geometrical constraints for the seed particles are considered. By using the optical diffraction method, the structural transition is further characterized by a decrease in the fractal dimension for this peculiar class of aggregates.

Optical Diffraction from Fractals with a Structural Transition

A macroscopic characterization of fractals showing up a structural transition from dense to multibranched growth is made using optical diffraction theory. Such fractals are generated via the numerical solution of the 2D Poisson and Biharmonic equations and are compared to more 'regular'irreversible clusters such as diffusion limited and Laplacian aggregates. The optical diffraction method enables to identify a decrease of the fractal dimension above the structural point.

Effects of Long-Range Coupling on Aggregation

Alternative to the Poisson growth model, numerical simulations of the two-dimensional biharmonic equation $\nabla^{2*2} u =0$ show that a transition from dense to multibranched growth is a consequence of the different coupling between displacements on the pattern formation of fractal aggregates.

Solitons and 1/f Noise in Molecular Chains

Davydov's model of solitons in alpha-helix protein chains is shown to display features of self-organized criticality (SOC), i.e., power law behaviour of correlations in space and 1/f-noise, as a consequence of considering random peptide group displacements from their (periodic) equilibrium positions along a chain. This may shed light on a basic mechanism leading to obtain flicker noise in alpha-helix protein chains and to predict a SOC regime in biomolecular structures from first principles. We believe our treatment of 1/f noise to be of some relevance to recent findings due to Voss on DNA [Phys. Rev. Lett. 68, 3805 (1992)].

Singularity spectrum of self-organized criticality

I introduce a simple continuous probability theory based on the Ginzburg-Landau equation that provides for the first time a common analytical basis to relate and describe the main features of two seemingly different phenomena of condensed-matter physics, namely self-organized criticality and multifractality. Numerical support is given by a comparison with reported simulation data. Within the theory the origin of self-organized critical phenomena is analysed in terms of a nonlinear singularity spectrum different from the typical convex shape due to multifractal measures.

Biharmonic pattern selection

A new model to describe fractal growth is discussed which includes effects due to long-range coupling between displacements $u$. The model is based on the biharmonic equation $\nabla^{4}u =0$ in two-dimensional isotropic defect-free media as follows from the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation for pattern formation -or, alternatively, from the theory of elasticity. As a difference with Laplacian and Poisson growth models, in the new model the Laplacian of $u$ is neither zero nor proportional to $u$. Its discretization allows to reproduce a transition from dense to multibranched growth at a point in which the growth velocity exhibits a minimum similarly to what occurs within Poisson growth in planar geometry. Furthermore, in circular geometry the transition point is estimated for the simplest case from the relation $r_{\ell}\approx L/e^{1/2}$ such that the trajectories become stable at the growing surfaces in a continuous limit. Hence, within the biharmonic growth model, this transition depends only on the system size $L$ and occurs approximately at a distance $60 \%$ far from a central seed particle. The influence of biharmonic patterns on the growth probability for each lattice site is also analysed.

Growth Model of Au Films on Ru(001)

In an attempt to find generic features on the fractal growth of Au films deposited on Ru(001), a simple simulation model based on irreversible diffusion-limited aggregation (DLA) is discussed. Highly irregular two-dimensional dentritic islands of Au particles that gradually grow on a larger host lattice of Ru particles and have fractal dimension d_{f}~ 1.70 each, are generated via a multiple had-hoc version of the DLA algorithm for single aggregates. Annealing effects on the islands morphology are reproduced assuming different sticking probabilities at nearest-neighbour lattice sites of Au films on Ru(001). Using simulation data, islands growth are described in analogy to diffusion-limited, precipitate growth with soft impingement of precipities. This leads to analyse thin film island growth kinetics in such fractal systems and to predict a main peak in scattering intensity patterns due to interisland interference. ---------------- Copies upon request to: canessae@itsictp.bitnet

Non-Linear I-V Characteristics of Double Schottky Barriers and Polycrystalline Semiconductors

An attempt to determine theoretically the highly non-linear current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of polycrystalline semiconductors, such as ZnO-based varistors, is made from the electrical properties of individual grain boundaries under dc bias. The role played by the fluctuations of double Schottky barrier heights at grain interfaces on driving electrical breakdown phenomena of macroscopic samples is pointed out in terms of a binary mixture model. An alternative trial form for the double Schottky barrier height is introduced to reproduce the breakdown voltage as well as the high non-linear coefficient alpha, where I propto V^{alpha}. ------------- Copies upon request to: canessae@itsictp.bitnet
