Role of Ni substitution on structural, magnetic and electronic properties of epitaxial CoCr2O4 spinel thin films

Cubic spinel CoCr2O4 has attained recent attention due to its multiferroic properties. However, the Co site substitution effect on the structural and magnetic properties has rarely been studied in thin film form. In this work, the structural and magnetic properties of Co1-xNixCr2O4 (x = 0, 0.5) epitaxial thin films deposited on MgAl2O4 (100) and MgO (100) substrates to manipulate the nature of strain in the films using pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique are presented. The epitaxial nature of the films was confirmed through X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS) measurements. Raman measurements revealed a disappearance of characteristic A1g and F2g modes of the CoCr2O4 with increase in the Ni content. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) studies show a modification of the surface morphology upon Ni substitution. Magnetic measurements disclose that the ferrimagnetic Curie temperature (Tc) of the CoCr2O4 in thin film grown on MgAl2O4 (100) and MgO (100) substrates were found to be 100.6 +/- 0.5 K and 93.8 +/- 0.2 K, respectively. With Ni substitution the transition temperatures significantly get enhanced from that of CoCr2O4. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) suggests Cr3+ oxidation states in the films, while Co ions are present in a mixed Co2+/Co3+ oxidation state. The substitution of Ni at Co site significantly modifies the line shape of the core level as well as the valence band. Ni ions are also found to be in a mixed 2+/3+ oxidation state. O 1s core level display asymmetry related to possible defects like oxygen vacancies in the films.

In-depth study of the $H -T$ phase diagram of Sr4Ru3O10 by magnetization experiments

We present magnetization measurements on Sr4Ru3O10 as a function of temperature and magnetic field applied perpendicular to the magnetic easy $c$-axis inside the ferromagnetic phase. Peculiar metamagnetism evolves in Sr4Ru3O10 below the ferromagnetic transition $T_{C}$ as a double step in the magnetization at two critical fields $H_{c1}$ and $H_{c2}$. We map the $H-T$ phase diagram with special focus on the temperature range 50\,K $\le T \le T_{C}$. We find that the critical field $H_{c1}(T)$ connects the field and temperature axes of the phase diagram, whereas the $H_{c2}$ boundary starts at 2.8\,T for the lowest temperatures and ends in a critical endpoint at (1\,T; 80\,K). We conclude from the temperature dependence of the ratio $\frac{Hc1}{Hc2}(T)$ that the double metamagnetic transition is an intrinisc effect of the material and it is not caused by sample stacking faults such as twinning or partial in-plane rotation between layers.

Missing magnetism in Sr$_{4}$Ru$_{3}$O$_{10}$: Indication for Antisymmetric Exchange Interaction

We report a detailed study of the magnetization modulus as a function of temperature and applied magnetic field under varying angle in Sr$_{4}$Ru$_{3}$O$_{10}$ close to the metamagnetic transition at $H_{c}\backsimeq 2.5\,$T for $H \perp c$. We confirm that the double-feature at $H_{c}$ is robust without further splitting for temperatures below 1.8 K down to 0.48 K. The metamagnetism in Sr$_{4}$Ru$_{3}$O$_{10}$ is accompanied by a reduction of the magnetic moment in the plane of rotation and large field-hysteretic behavior. The double anomaly shifts to higher fields by rotating the field from $H\,\perp \,c$ to $H\,\parallel\,c$. We compare our experimental findings with numerical simulations based on spin reorientation models caused by intrinsic magnetocrystalline anisotropy and Zeeman effect. Crystal anisotropy is able to explain a metamagnetic transition in the ferromagnetic ordered system Sr$_{4}$Ru$_{3}$O$_{10}$, but a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya term is crucial to account for a reduction of the magnetic moment as discovered in the experiments.

Effective tight-binding model for renormalized band structure of Sr2RuO4

We derive an effective quasiparticle tight-binding model which is able to describe with high accuracy the low-energy electronic structure of Sr2RuO4 obtained by means of low temperature angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Such approach is applied to determine the momentum and orbital dependent effective masses and velocities of the electron quasiparticles close to the Fermi level. We demonstrate that the model can provide, among the various computable physical quantities, a very good agreement with the specific heat coefficient and the plasma frequency. Its use is underlined as a realistic input in the analysis of the possible electronic mechanisms related to the superconducting state of Sr2RuO4.

Surface and bulk electronic structure of unconventional superconductor Sr_2RuO_4: unusual splitting of the beta-band

We present an angle resolved photoemission study of the surface and bulk electronic structure of the single layer ruthenate Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. As the early studies of its electronic structure by photoemission and scanning tunneling microscopy were confronted with a problem of surface reconstruction, surface aging was previously proposed as a possible remedy to access the bulk states. Here we suggest an alternative way by demonstrating that, in the case of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, circularly polarised light can be used to disentangle the signals from the bulk and surface layers, thus opening the possibility of investigating many-body interactions both in bulk and surface bands. The proposed procedure results in improved momentum resolution, which enabled us to detect an unexpected splitting of the surface $β$ band. We propose that spin--orbit splitting might be responsible for this, and discuss possible relations of the newly observed surface feature to topological matter.
