Li in NGC 6752 and the formation of globular clusters

Li abundances for 9 Turnoff (TO) stars of the intermediate metallicity cluster ([Fe/H]=-1.4) NGC6752 are presented. The cluster is known to show abundance anomalies and anticorrelations observed in both evolved and main sequence stars. We find that Li abundance anticorrelates with Na (and N) and correlates with O in these Turn-Off stars. For the first time we observe Pop II hot dwarfs systematically departing from the Spite plateau. The observed anticorrelations are in qualitative agreement with what is expected if the original gas were contaminated by Intermediate Mass AGB - processed material. However, a quantitative comparison shows that none of the existing models can reproduce all the observations at once. The very large amount of processed gas present in the cluster does not imply a 'pollution', but rather that the whole protocluster cloud was enriched by a previous generation of stars. We finally note that the different abundance patterns in NGC 6397 and NGC 6752 imply different ejecta of the preenrichment composition for the two clusters.

Precise reddening and metallicity of NGC6752 from FLAMES spectra

(abridged) Accurate reddenings for Globular Clusters could be obtained by comparing the colour-temperature obtained using temperatures from reddening-free indicator (Halpha), with that given by standard colour-temperature calibrations. From a single 1300 seconds exposure with FLAMES at VLT2 we obtained spectra centred on Halpha (R=6000, 5<S/N<50) for 120 stars near the turn-off of NGC6752. This set of spectra was used to derive effective temperatures from fittings of Halpha profiles with typical errors of about +/- 200 K and reddening estimates with individual errors of 0.05 mag. Averaging all individual reddenings, a high precision reddening estimate has been obtained for the cluster: E(B-V)=0.046 +/- 0.005. The same exposure provided UVES spectra of seven stars near the red giant branch bump (R=40000, 20<S/N<40) that provided Fe abundances with internal errors of 0.026 dex, and with average metallicity [Fe/H]= -1.48 +/- 0.01 +/- 0.06 dex (random + systematic). Abundances were obtained for several other elements, allowing e.g. an accurate estimate of the ratio between the alpha-elements and Fe ([alpha/Fe]=+0.27 +/- 0.01). The O-Na anticorrelation is evident from our UVES data, in agreement with past results. This analysis shows the power of FLAMES for analysis of globular clusters: the accurate reddenings and metal abundances obtained by a procedure like that described here, combined with distance determinations from cluster dynamics or main sequence fitting, and high quality colour-magnitude diagrams, could allow derivation of ages with errors below 1 Gyr for individual globular clusters.

Variable stars in the bar of the Large Magellanic Cloud: the photometric catalogue

The catalogue of the Johnson-Cousins B,V and I light curves obtained for 162 variable stars (135 RR Lyrae, 4 candidate Anomalous Cepheids, 11 Classical Cepheids, 11 eclipsing binaries and 1 delta Scuti star) in two areas close to the bar of the Large Magellanic Cloud is presented along with coordinates, finding charts, periods, epochs, amplitudes, and mean quantities (intensity- and magnitude-averaged luminosities) of the variables with full coverage of the light variations. A star by star comparison is made with MACHO and OGLE II photometries based on both variable and constant stars in common, and the transformation relationships to our photometry are provided. The pulsation properties of the RR Lyrae stars in the sample are discussed in detail. Parameters of the Fourier decomposition of the light curves are derived for the fundamental mode RR Lyrae stars with complete and regular curves (29 stars). They are used to estimate metallicities, absolute magnitudes, intrinsic (B-V)o colours, and temperatures of the variable stars, according to Jurcsik and Kovacs (1996), and Kovacs and Walker (2001) method. Quantities derived from the Fourier parameters are compared with the corresponding observed quantities. In particular, the "photometric" metallicities are compared with the spectroscopic metal abundances derived by Gratton et al. (2004) from low resolution spectra obtained with FORS at the Very Large Telescope.

Heavy elements and chemical enrichment in globular clusters

High resolution (R > 40 000) and high S/N spectra have been acquired with UVES on the VLT-Kueyen (Paranal Observatory, ESO Chile) for several main sequence turnoff stars (V ~ 17 mag) and subgiants at the base of the Red Giant Branch (V ~ 16 mag) in three globular clusters (NGC 6397, NGC 6752 and 47 Tuc/NGC 104) at different metallicities (respectively [Fe/H] = -2.0; -1.5; -0.7$). Spectra for a sample of 25 field halo subdwarves have also been taken with equal resolution, but higher S/N. These data have been used to determine the abundances of several neutron-capture elements in these three clusters: strontium, yttrium, barium and europium. This is the first abundance determination of these heavy elements for such unevolved stars in these three globular clusters. These values, together with the [Ba/Eu] and [Sr/Ba] abundance ratios, have been used to test the self-enrichment scenario. A comparison is done with field halo stars and other well known Galactic globular clusters in which heavy elements have already been measured in the past, at least in bright giants (V > 11-12 mag). Our results show clearly that globular clusters have been uniformly enriched by r- and s-process syntheses, and that most of them seem to follow exactly the same abundance patterns as field halo stars, which discards the ``classical'' self-enrichment scenario for the origin of metallicities and heavy elements in globular clusters.

Metal abundances of RR Lyrae stars in the bar of the Large Magellanic Cloud

Metallicities ([Fe/H]) from low resolution spectroscopy obtained with the Very Large Telescope (VLT) are presented for 98 RR Lyrae and 3 short period Cepheids in the bar of the Large Magellanic Cloud. Our metal abundances have typical errors of +/-0.17 dex. The average metallicity of the RR Lyrae stars is [Fe/H]=-1.48 +/- 0.03 +/- 0.06 on the scale of Harris (1996). The star-to-star scatter (0.29 dex) is larger than the observational errors, indicating a real spread in metal abundances. The derived metallicities cover the range -2.12 < [Fe/H] <-0.27, but there are only a few stars having [Fe/H] > -1. For the ab-type variables we compared our spectroscopic abundances with those obtained from the Fourier decomposition of the light curves. We find good agreement between the two techniques, once the systematic offset of 0.2 dex between the metallicity scales used in the two methods is taken into account. The spectroscopic metallicities were combined with the dereddened apparent magnitudes of the variables to derive the slope of the luminosity-metallicity relation for the LMC RR Lyrae stars: the resulting value is 0.214 +/- 0.047 mag/dex. Finally, the 3 short period Cepheids have [Fe/H] values in the range -2.0 < [Fe/H] <-1.5 . They are more metal-poor than typical LMC RR Lyrae stars, thus they are more likely to be Anomalous Cepheids rather than the short period Classical Cepheids that are being found in a number of dwarf Irregular galaxies.

Iron abundances from high-resolution spectroscopy of the open clusters NGC 2506, NGC 6134, and IC 4651

This is the first of a series of papers devoted to derive the metallicity of old open clusters in order to study the time evolution of the chemical abundance gradient in the Galactic disk. We present detailed iron abundances from high resolution (R~40000) spectra of several red clump and bright giant stars in the open clusters IC 4651, NGC 2506 and NGC 6134. We observed 4 stars of NGC 2506, 3 stars of NGC 6134, and 5 stars of IC 4651 with the FEROS spectrograph at the ESO 1.5 m telescope; moreover, 3 other stars of NGC 6134 were observed with the UVES spectrograph on Kueyen (VLT UT2). After excluding the cool giants near the red giant branch tip (one in IC 4651 and one in NGC 2506), we found overall [Fe/H] values of -0.20 +/- 0.01, rms = 0.02 dex (2 stars) for NGC 2506, +0.15 +/- 0.03, rms = 0.07 dex (6 stars) for NGC 6134, and +0.11 +/- 0.01, rms = 0.01 dex (4 stars) for IC 4651. The metal abundances derived from line analysis for each star were extensively checked using spectrum synthesis of about 30 to 40 Fe I lines and 6 Fe II lines. Our spectroscopic temperatures provide reddening values in good agreement with literature data for these clusters, strengthening the reliability of the adopted temperature and metallicity scale. Also, gravities from the Fe equilibrium of ionization agree quite well with expectations based on cluster distance moduli and evolutionary masses.

Abundance differences between components of wide binaries

In this paper we present iron abundance analysis for 23 wide binaries with main sequence components in the temperture range 4900-6300 K, taken from the sample of the pairs currently included in the radial velocity planet search on going at the TNG. The use of a line-by-line differential analysis technique between the components of each pair allows to reach errors of about 0.02 dex in the iron content difference. Most of the pairs have abundance differences lower than 0.02 dex and there are no pairs with differences larger than 0.07 dex. The four cases of differences larger than 0.02 dex may be spouriuos because of the larger error bars affecting pairs with large temperature difference, cold stars and rotating stars. The pair HD 219542, previously reported by us to have different composition, results instead normal. For non-rotating stars warmer than 5500 K, we are able to exclude in most cases the ingestion of more than 1 Earth Mass of iron (about 5 Earth masses of meteoritic material) during the main sequence lifetime of the stars, placing more stringent limits (about 0.4 Earth masses of iron) in five cases of warm stars. This latter limit is similar to the estimates of rocky material accreted by the Sun during its main sequence lifetime. Combining the results of the present analysis with those for the Hyades and Pleiades, we conclude that the hypothesis that pollution by planetary material is the only responsible for the highest metallicity of the stars with planets may be rejected at more than 99% level of confidence if the incidence of planets in these samples is as high as 8% and similar to the field stars included in current radial velocity surveys. However, the significance of this result drops considerably if the incidence of planets around stars in binary systems and clusters is less than a half than around normal field stars.

Heavy elements abundances in turn-off stars and early subgiants in NGC 6752

High resolution spectra (R > 40 000) for 9 main sequence turn-off stars and 9 subgiants in the globular cluster NGC 6752 were acquired with UVES on the VLT-Kueyen (UT2). These data have been used to determine the abundances of some heavy elements (strontium, yttrium, barium and europium). This paper presents for the first time accurate results for heavy elements in this globular cluster. We did not find any systematic effect between the abundances found in turn-off stars, subgiants, and giants. We obtain the following mean abundances for these elements in our sample (turn-off stars and subgiants): [Sr/Fe] = 0.06 +/- 0.16, [Y/Fe] = -0.01 +/- 0.12, [Ba/Fe] = 0.18 +/- 0.11, and [Eu/Fe] = 0.41 +/- 0.09. The dispersion in the abundance ratios of the different elements is low and can be totally explained by uncertainties in their derivation. These ratios are in agreement with the values found in field halo stars with the same metallicity. We did not observe any correlation between the [n-capture/Fe] ratios and the star-to-star variations of the O and Na abundances. The [Ba/Eu] and [Sr/Ba] ratios show clearly that this globular cluster has also been uniformly enriched by r- and s-process synthesis.

Mass motions and chromospheres of RGB stars in the globular cluster NGC 2808

We present the results of the first observations, taken with FLAMES during Science Verification, of red giant branch (RGB) stars in the globular cluster NGC 2808. A total of 137 stars was observed, of which 20 at high resolution (R=47,000) with UVES and the others at lower resolution (R=19,000-29,000) with GIRAFFE in MEDUSA mode, monitoring ~ 3 mag down from the RGB tip. Spectra were taken of the Halpha, Na I D and Ca II H and K lines. This is by far the largest and most complete collection of such data in globular cluster giants, both for the number of stars observed within one cluster, and for monitoring all the most important optical diagnostics of chromospheric activity/mass motions.Evidence of mass motions in the atmospheres was searched from asymmetry in the profiles and coreshifts of the Halpha, Na I D and Ca II K lines, as well as from Halpha emission wings. We have set the detection thresholds for the onset of Halpha emission, negative Na D_2 coreshifts and negative K_3 coreshifts at log L/Lsun ~ 2.5, 2.9 and 2.8, respectively. These limits are significantly fainter than the results found by nearly all previous studies. Also the fraction of stars where these features have been detected has been increased significantly with respect to the previous studies. Our observations confirm the widespread presence of chromospheres among globular cluster giants, as it was found among Population I red giants. Some of the above diagnostics suggest clearly the presence of outward mass motions in the atmosphere of several stars.

Distance scale and variable stars in Local Group Galaxies: LMC and Fornax

We briefly review our photometric and spectroscopic study of RR Lyrae variable stars in the bar of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), that allowed us to reconcile the so-called "short" and "long" distance moduli of the LMC on the value mod_LMC=18.51 +/- 0.085 mag. Then we present preliminary results from the photometric study of a 33' x 34' area in the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy containing the stellar clusters Fornax 3 (NGC 1049) and 6. We identified about 1000 candidate variables in this field of Fornax, and report the first detection and measure of about 60 RR Lyrae variable stars in the globular cluster Fornax 3.

Variable Stars in the LMC: the Photometric Catalogue

New B, V, I photometry was obtained for a sample of 152 variables (125 RR Lyrae's, 4 anomalous Cepheids, 11 classical Cepheids, 11 eclipsing binaries and a delta Scuti star) in two regions near the bar of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We derived complete and well sampled B and V light curves, very accurate periods, epochs of maximum light, amplitudes, intensity- and magnitude-averaged apparent luminosities for about 95% of the RR Lyrae stars. All these informations are contained in the photometric catalogue. Metallicities from the Fourier decomposition of the V light curves were derived for 29 of the ab type RR Lyrae's and are compared with the DeltaS metal abundances from low resolution spectra obtained with the Very Large Telescope (VLT).

Distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud: the RR Lyrae stars

(abridged) New photometry and spectroscopy for more than a hundred RR Lyrae stars in two fields located close to the bar of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) are used to derive new accurate estimates of the average magnitude, the local reddening, the luminosity-metallicity relation, and of the distance to the LMC. Metallicities from low resolution spectra obtained with the VLT have been derived for 101 RR Lyr's; the average value is [Fe/H]=-1.48+/-0.03 (sigma=0.29). An estimate of the reddening was obtained with 2 different methods, and we found: E(B-V)=0.116+/-0.017, and 0.086+/-0.017 mag in field A and B, respectively. The dereddened apparent average luminosity of the RR Lyrae's defined by the present photometry is _0=19.064+/-0.064 at [Fe/H]=-1.5. We determine the slope of the luminosity-metallicity relation for the RR Lyrae stars: Delta[M_V(RR)]/ Delta[Fe/H]=0.214+/-0.047, with no clear evidence for a change in slope at [Fe/H]=-1.5. When coupled with the absolute magnitude derived from the Baade-Wesselink and the statistical parallaxes methods, both methods known to favour the short distance scale, this value leads mod(LMC)=18.38+/- 0.16 and 18.30+/-0.14, respectively. If we use instead the absolute magnitude from the new Main Sequence Fitting of Galactic globular clusters [M_V(RR)=0.61+/-0.07 mag at [Fe/H]=-1.5] we derive mod(LMC)=18.45+/-0.09. The average I luminosity of the clump stars is I_0=18.12+/-0.06, and moves the clump distance modulus to the LMC to mod(LMC)=18.42+/-0.07 and 18.45+/-0.07 when two metallicity-I relations are used. All these values are only 1 sigma shorter than provided by the Pop I distance indicators, and allow to reconcile the short and long distance scale on a common value for the distance modulus of the LMC of 18.515+/-0.085 mag.

Anomalous RR Lyrae stars(?). III. CM Leonis

Time series of B,V,I CCD photometry and radial velocity measurements from high resolution spectroscopy (R=30,000) covering the full pulsation cycle are presented for the field RR Lyrae star CM Leonis. The photometric data span a 6 year interval from 1994 to 1999, and allow us to firmly establish the pulsation mode and periodicity of the variable. The derived period P=0.361699 days (+/- 0.000001) is very close to the value published in the Fourth Edition of the General Catalogue of Variable Stars (P=0.361732 days). However, contrary to what was previously found, the amplitude and shape of the light curve qualify CM Leo as a very regular first overtone pulsator with a prominent hump on the rising branch of its multicolour light curves. According to an abundace analysis performed on three spectra taken near minimum light (0.42 < phase < 0.61), CM Leo is a metal-poor star with metal abundance [Fe/H]=-1.93 +/- 0.20. The photometric and radial velocity curves of CM Leo have been compared with the predictions of suitable pulsational models to infer tight constraints on the stellar mass, effective temperature, and distance modulus of the star. We derive a true distance modulus of CM Leo of (m-M)0=13.11 +/- 0.02 mag and a corresponding absolute magnitude of Mv=0.47 +/- 0.04. This absolute magnitude, once corrected for evolutionary and metallicity effects, leads to a true distance modulus of the Large Magellanic Cloud of (m-M)0=18.43 +/- 0.06 mag, in better agreement with the long astronomical distance scale.

The lithium content of the globular cluster NGC 6397

We make use of high resolution, high signal-to-noise ratio spectra of 12 turn-off stars in the metal-poor globular cluster NGC 6397 to measure its lithium content. We conclude that they all have the same lithium abundance A(Li) = 2.34 with a standard deviation of 0.056 dex. We use this result, together with Monte Carlo simulations, to estimate that the maximum allowed intrinsic scatter is of the order of 0.035 dex. This is a new stringent constraint to be fulfilled by stellar models which predict Li depletion. We argue that although a mild depletion of 0.1 -- 0.2 dex, as predicted by recent models, cannot be ruled out, there is no compelling reason for it. This fact, together with the good agreement with the Li abundance observed in field stars, supports the primordial origin of lithium in metal-poor stars. Taking the above value as the primordial lithium abundance implies a cosmic baryonic density which is either Omega_b h^2 = 0.016 +/- 0.004 or Omega_b h^2 = 0.005 ^{+0.0026}_{-0.0006}, from the predictions of standard big bang nucleosynthesis. The high baryonic density solution is in agreement with recent results on the primordial abundance of deuterium and 3He and on the estimates derived from the fluctuations of the cosmic microwave background.

CMD's, RR Lyrae's, clump stars and reddening in the LMC

We present new B, V, I photometry in the standard Johnson-Cousins photometric system of two regions near the bar of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), one of which is very close to LMC field used for the "Coimbra test on the synthetic CMD techniques". The two areas contain 128 RR Lyrae variables and more than 8000 clump stars. Once combined with Clementini et al. 2001 (astro-ph/0007471) photometry the new data-set allows us to get (i) accurate CMD's down to V~23 mag, (ii) full coverage of the B and V light variation for more than 80% of the RR Lyrae's, (iii) a very precise estimate of the LMC RR Lyrae's average apparent luminosity, (iv) an accurate estimate of the I luminosity of the LMC clump stars, and (v) an independent evaluation of the reddening in these regions of the LMC using the pulsational properties of the RR Lyrae's in our sample. A detailed comparison is made between our, OGLE II and MACHO photometries. We discuss the impact of our new results on the distance to the LMC and on the "short" and "long" distance scale controversy.

Metallicities for Double Mode RR Lyrae in the Large Magellanic Cloud

Metallicities for six double mode RR Lyrae's (RRd's) in the Large Magellanic Cloud have been estimated using the DeltaS method. The derived [Fe/H] values are in the range [Fe/H] = -1.09 to -1.78 (or -0.95 to -1.58, adopting a different calibration of [Fe/H] vs DeltaS). Two stars in our sample are at the very metal rich limit of all RRd's for which metal abundance has been estimated, either by direct measure (for field objects) or on the basis of the hosting system (for objects in globular clusters or external galaxies). These metal abundances, coupled with mass determinations from pulsational models and the Petersen diagram, are used to compare the mass-metallicity distribution of field and cluster RR Lyrae variables. We find that field and cluster RRd's seem to follow the same mass-metallicity distribution, within the observational errors, strengthening the case for uniformity of properties between field and cluster variables At odds to what is usually assumed, we find no significative difference in mass for RR Lyrae's in globular clusters of different metallicity and Oosterhoff types, or there may even be a difference contrary to the commonly accepted one, depending on the metallicity scale adopted to derive masses. This ``unusual'' result for the mass-metallicity relation is probably due, at least in part, to the inclusion of updated opacity tables in the computation of metal-dependent pulsation models.

The White Dwarf Distance to the Globular Cluster 47 Tucanae and its Age

We present a new determination of the distance (and age) of the Galactic globular cluster 47 Tucanae (NGC 104) based on the fit of its white dwarf (WD) cooling sequence with the empirical fiducial sequence of local WD with known trigonometric parallax, following the method described in Renzini et al. (1996). Both the cluster and the local WDs were imaged with HST+WFPC2 using the same instrument setup. We obtained an apparent distance modulus of $(m-M)_V=13.27\pm0.14$ consistent with previous ground-based determinations and shorter than that found using HIPPARCOS subdwarfs. Coupling our distance determination with a new measure of the apparent magnitude of the main sequence turnoff, based on our HST data, we derive an age of $13\pm2.5$ Gyr.

The O-Na and Mg-Al Anticorrelations in Turn-Off and early Subgiants in Globular Clusters

High dispersion spectra (R>40,000) for a quite large number of stars at the main sequence turn-off and at the base of the subgiant branch in NGC6397 and NGC6752 were obtained with the UVES on Kueyen (VLT UT2). The [Fe/H] values we found are -2.03+/-0.02+/-0.04 and -1.42+/-0.02+/-0.04 for NGC6397 and NGC6752 respectively, where the first error bars refer to internal errors and the second ones to systematic errors. In both clusters the [Fe/H] obtained for TO-stars agree perfectly (within a few per cents) with that obtained for stars at the base of the RGB. The [O/Fe]=0.21+/-0.05 value we obtain for NGC6397 is quite low, but it agrees with previous results obtained for giants in this cluster; also, the star-to-star scatter in both O and Fe is very small, indicating that this small mass cluster is chemically very homogenous. On the other side, our results show clearly and for the first time that the O-Na anticorrelation (up to now seen only for stars on the red giant branches of globular clusters) is present among unevolved stars in the globular cluster NGC6752, a more massive cluster than NGC6397. A similar anticorrelation is present also for Mg and Al, and C and N. It is very difficult to explain the observed Na-O, and Mg-Al anticorrelation in NGC6752 stars by a deep mixing scenario; we think it requires some non internal mechanism.
