Quantization, group contraction and zero point energy

We study algebraic structures underlying 't Hooft's construction relating classical systems with the quantum harmonic oscillator. The role of group contraction is discussed. We propose the use of SU(1,1) for two reasons: because of the isomorphism between its representation Hilbert space and that of the harmonic oscillator and because zero point energy is implied by the representation structure. Finally, we also comment on the relation between dissipation and quantization.

Quantum Algebras and Quantum Physics

In Quantum Mechanics operators must be hermitian and, in a direct product space, symmetric. These properties are saved by Lie algebra operators but not by those of quantum algebras. A possible correspondence between observables and quantum algebra operators is suggested by extending the definition of matrix elements of a physical observable, including the eventual projection on the appropriate symmetric space. This allows to build in the Lie space of representations one-parameter families of operators belonging to the enveloping Lie algebra that satisfy an approximate symmetry and have the properties required by physics.

Fermions, Bosons, Anyons, Boltzmanions and Lie-Hopf Algebras

Usual quantum statistics is written in Fock space but it is not an algebraic theory. We show that at a deeper level it can be algebraically formalized defining the different statistics as (multi-mode) coherent states of the appropriate (but different from the usual ones) Lie-Hopf groups. The traditional connection between groups and statistics, established in vacuum, is indeed subverted by the interaction with the thermal bath. We show indeed that h(1), related in quantum field theory to bosons, must be used to define in presence of a bath the Boltzmann statistics while, to build the Bose statistics, we have to take into account su(1,1). Astonishing to describe fermions we are forced to use not the superalgebra h(1|1) but su(2) in the fundamental representation. Higher representations of su(2) allow also to give a possible definition of anyon statistics with generalized Pauli principle. Physical implications are discussed; the results is more general then the usual on the discrete spectrum, but everything collapses to standard theory when the continuum limit is performed.

Thermo Field Dynamics and quantum algebras

The algebraic structure of Thermo Field Dynamics lies in the $q$-deformation of the algebra of creation and annihilation operators. Doubling of the degrees of freedom, tilde-conjugation rules, and Bogoliubov transformation for bosons and fermions are recognized as algebraic properties of $h_{q}(1)$ and of $h_{q}(1|1)$, respectively.

Twist Deformation of the rank one Lie Superalgebra

The Drinfeld twist is applyed to deforme the rank one orthosymplectic Lie superalgebra $osp(1|2)$. The twist element is the same as for the $sl(2)$ Lie algebra due to the embedding of the $sl(2)$ into the superalgebra $osp(1|2)$. The R-matrix has the direct sum structure in the irreducible representations of $osp(1|2)$. The dual quantum group is defined using the FRT-formalism. It includes the Jordanian quantum group $SL_ξ(2)$ as subalgebra and Grassmann generators as well.

Quantum groups, coherent states, squeezing and lattice quantum mechanics

By resorting to the Fock--Bargmann representation, we incorporate the quantum Weyl--Heisenberg algebra, $q$-WH, into the theory of entire analytic functions. The $q$--WH algebra operators are realized in terms of finite difference operators in the $z$ plane. In order to exhibit the relevance of our study, several applications to different cases of physical interest are discussed: squeezed states and the relation between coherent states and theta functions on one side, lattice quantum mechanics and Bloch functions on the other, are shown to find a deeper mathematical understanding in terms of $q$-WH. The rôle played by the finite difference operators and the relevance of the lattice structure in the completeness of the coherent states system suggest that the quantization of the WH algebra is an essential tool in the physics of discretized (periodic) systems.

Universal $R$--matrices for non-standard (1+1) quantum groups

A universal quasitriangular $R$--matrix for the non-standard quantum (1+1) Poincaré algebra $U_ziso(1,1)$ is deduced by imposing analyticity in the deformation parameter $z$. A family $g_μ$ of ``quantum graded contractions" of the algebra $U_ziso(1,1)\oplus U_{-z}iso(1,1)$ is obtained; this set of quantum algebras contains as Hopf subalgebras with two primitive translations quantum analogues of the two dimensional Euclidean, Poincaré and Galilei algebras enlarged with dilations. Universal $R$--matrices for these quantum Weyl algebras and their associated quantum groups are constructed.

Identical Particles and Permutation Group

Second quantization is revisited and creation and annihilation operators areshown to be related, on the same footing both to the algebra h(1), and to the superalgebra osp(1|2) that are shown to be both compatible with Bose and Fermi statistics. The two algebras are completely equivalent in the one-mode sector but, because of grading of osp(1|2), differ in the many-particle case. The same scheme is straightforwardly extended to the quantum case h_q(1) and osp_q(1|2).

Heisenberg XXZ Model and Quantum Galilei Group

The 1D Heisenberg spin chain with anisotropy of the XXZ type is analyzed in terms of the symmetry given by the quantum Galilei group Gamma_q(1). We show that the magnon excitations and the s=1/2, n-magnon bound states are determined by the algebra. Thus the Gamma_q(1) symmetry provides a description that naturally induces the Bethe Ansatz. The recurrence relations determined by Gamma_q(1) permit to express the energy of the n-magnon bound states in a closed form in terms of Tchebischeff polynomials.

Quantum Galilei Group as Symmetry of Magnons

Inhomogeneous quantum groups are shown to be an effective algebraic tool in the study of integrable systems and to provide solutions equivalent to the Bethe ansatz. The method is illustrated on the 1D Heisenberg ferromagnet whose symmetry is shown to be the quantum Galilei group Gamma_q(1) here introduced. Both the single magnon and the s=1/2 bound states of n-magnons are completely described by the algebra.

Inomogeneous Quantum Groups as Symmetries of Phonons

The quantum deformed (1+1) Poincare' algebra is shown to be the kinematical symmetry of the harmonic chain, whose spacing is given by the deformation parameter. Phonons with their symmetries as well as multiphonon processes are derived from the quantum group structure. Inhomogeneous quantum groups are thus proposed as kinematical invariance of discrete systems.
