Molecular effects in low-energy muon transfer from muonic hydrogen to oxygen

In the present study we determine from the available experimental data the cross section of muon transfer to molecular oxygen at low energies with account of the oxygen molecule structure. Building on an earlier work, the results highlight the role of the molecular structure effects and signifcantly improve the agreement with theoretical calculations of the muon transfer rate. An effcient computational model of the kinetics of processes involving muonic hydrogen atoms in gaseous mixture of H2 and O2 is developed and analyzed. The model is applied in the description of the FAMU experiment for the measurement of the hyperfine splitting in muonic hydrogen and the Zemach radius of the proton.

Tests of the parametrizations of Fragmentation Functions using data on inclusive pion and kaon production in unpolarized $pp$ collisions from the STAR collaboration and at the NICA project

The goal of this study is to check which, if any, of the published versions of the pion and kaon fragmentation functions is compatible with the STAR data on semi-inclusive pion and kaon production in proton-proton collisions, and on the basis of this analysis to make reliable predictions for the $p_T$ spectra of the pions and kaons in inclusive pion and kaon production at the future NICA proton-proton collider. The calculations are carried out in next-to-leading order (NLO) of perturbative quantum chromodynamics (pQCD), using the well tested CTEQ6 parton distributions. We consider the following pion and kaon fragmentation functions (FFs) -- DSEHS-14, DSEHS-17, LSS-15, HKNS-07 and AKK-08. Our analysis shows that within the experimental errors all tested sets of fragmentation functions provide a good fit to STAR data at the c.m. energy $ \sqrt{S} = 200\, {\rm GeV} $, and the best ones are both LSS-15 and DSEHS-14 for pions and DSEHS-17 for kaons. From comparison of the LO and NLO results it is clear that the latter fit data much better, specially in the region of small $p_T$. The NLO cross sections are also less scale-$Q^2$ dependent, where $p_T/2\leqslant Q \leqslant 2p_T$, than the LO ones. In order to make predictions for NICA energies, we compare the NLO pQCD results with the existing experimental BES STAR data on semi-inclusive hadron production in the most peripheral Au+Au collisions where the nuclear effects can be neglected. The comparison for lower energy scales, like at NICA, shows that a purely pQCD approach is inadequate and suggests the necessity to take into account also higher-order effects of initial-state soft-gluon radiation. Nevertheless, these data on the $p_T$ spectra of $π^+$, $K^+$ and also the ratios $π^-/π^+$ and $K^-/K^+$ seem favour LSS-15 and DSEHS-14 FFs for pions and DSEHS-17 for kaons, similarly as at the energy scale $ \sqrt{S} = 200\, {\rm GeV} $.

New study of the Boer-Mulders function: Implications for the quark and hadron transverse momenta

In series of papers the Boer-Mulders function for a given quark flavour has been extracted: (i) from data on semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering, using the simplifying, but theoretically inconsistent, assumption that it is proportional to the Sivers function for each quark flavour and (ii) from data on Drell-Yan reactions. In earlier papers, using the semi-inclusive deep inelastic COMPASS deuteron data on the $\langle\cosϕ_h\rangle$ and $\langle\cos 2 ϕ_h\rangle$ asymmetries, we extracted the collinear $x_{_{\!B}}$ dependence of the Boer-Mulders function for the sum of the valence quarks $Q_V=u_V + d_V$ using a small number of model dependent assumptions and found a significant disagreement with the analysis in (i). In the present paper, we provide a more complete analysis of the semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering reaction, including a discussion of higher twist and interaction-dependent terms, and also a comparison with the Boer-Mulders function extracted from data on the Drell-Yan reaction. We confirm that the proportionality relation of the BM function to the Sivers function, for each quark flavour, fails badly, but find that it holds rather well if applied to the nonsinglet valence-quark combination, $Q_V$. We also find good agreement with the results of the Drell-Yan analysis. Furthermore, we obtain interesting information on the quark transverse momentum densities in the nucleon and on the hadron transverse momentum dependence in quark fragmentation.

Towards a model independent extraction of the Boer-Mulders function

At present, the Boer-Mulders function for a given quark flavour has been extracted from data on semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering using the simplifying, but theoretically inconsistent, assumption that it is proportional to the Sivers function for each quark flavour. In this paper, using the latest semi-inclusive deep inelastic COMPASS deuteron data on the $\langle\cosϕ_h\rangle$ and $\langle\cos 2 ϕ_h\rangle$ asymmetries we extract the collinear $x_B$-dependence of the Boer-Mulders function for the sum of the valence quarks $Q_V=u_V + d_V$ in an essentially model independent way, and find a significant disagreement with the published results. Our analysis also yields interesting information on the transverse momentum dependence of the unpolarized quark distribution and fragmentation functions.

The dispersion method and dimensional regularization applied to the decay $H \to Z γ$

We have calculated the $W$-loop contribution to the amplitude of the decay $H \to Z γ$ in the unitary gauge through the dispersion method and in the $R_ξ$ gauge using dimensional regularization (DimReg). We show that the results of the calculations with DimReg and the dispersion method, adopting the boundary condition at the limit $M_W \to 0$ defined by the Goldstone boson equivalence theorem (GBET), completely coincide. This implies that the dispersion method obeying the GBET is compatible with DimReg. The advantage of the applied dispersion method is that we work with finite quantities and no regularization is required.

Dispersion theoretic calculation of the $H\rightarrow Z+γ$ amplitude

We have calculated the $W$-loop contribution to the amplitude of the decay $H\rightarrow Z+γ$ in two different methods: 1) in the $R_ξ$-gauge using dimensional regularization (DimReg), and 2) in the unitary gauge through the dispersion method. Using the dispersion method we have followed two approaches: i) without subtraction and ii) with subtraction, the subtraction constant being determined adopting the Goldstone boson equivalence theorem (GBET) at the limit $M_W\to 0$. The results of the calculations in $R_ξ$-gauge with DimReg and the dispersion method with the GBET completely coincide, which shows that DimReg is compatible with the dispersion method obeying the GBET.

The axial form factor and polarization of the final nucleon in quasi-elastic ν-N scattering

We have calculated the polarization of the final nucleon in charged current quasi-elastic ν-N scattering. We show that the longitudinal and transverse polarizations, as well as their ratio exhibit simple dependence on the axial form factor and their sensitivity to the axial mass is much stronger than that of the cross section. This suggests that measurements of the polarization of the nucleon in the high-statistics neutrino experiments could provide important information on the axial form factor.

On the polarization of the final nucleon in NC elastic ν_μ(\barν_μ) - N scattering

New short baseline neutrino experiments open new possibilities of high precision study of different neutrino processes. We present here results of the calculation of the polarization of final nucleon in elastic NC ν_μ(\barν_μ)-nucleon scattering. In a numerical analysis the sensitivity to the different choices of the axial and axial strange form factors is examined. Measurements of the polarization of the final proton in elastic e-p scattering drastically changed our knowledge about the electromagnetic form factors of the proton. From measurement of the nucleon polarization in the NC elastic scattering a new additional information about the axial G_A(Q^2} and the strange axial G^s_A(Q^2) form factors of the nucleon could be inferred.

CP violation in charged Higgs production and decays in the Complex Two Higgs Doublet Model

We study the effects of CP violation in charged Higgs boson production $pp\to t H^\pm + X$ at the LHC, as well as in the charged Higgs boson decays $H^\pm \to t b$ and $H^\pm \to W^\pm H_i^0$, $i=1,2,3$. The study is done in the framework of the type II complex Two Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM) with softly broken $Z_2$ symmetry. In this model violation of CP invariance is induced by the complex parameter $m^2_{12}$ of the tree-level Higgs potential. We calculate the CP violating rate asymmetries for $H^+$ and $H^-$ production and decays as well as for the combined processes at one-loop level and perform a detailed numerical analysis. All calculations are done with the automatic amplitude generator FeynArts and the calculational tool FormCalc, for which we have written a complete complex 2HDM model file and relevant fortran drivers. The implementation of the complex 2HDM in FeynArts and FormCalc is described. In comparison with the analogous results in the MSSM, all considered CP violating asymmetries are smaller by an order of magnitude and do not exceed 2 to 3%.

On model independent extraction of the Kaon Fragmentation Functions

We present a model independent approach to FFs, which allows to determine uniquely the non-singlet combination (D_u-D_d)^{K^++K^-} of the kaon FFs, independently in the three different processes of kaon inclusive production: e+e- annihilation, pp-collisions and lN semi-inclusive DIS. Only C and SU(2) invariances are used and no assumptions on FFs and PDFs, the result holds in any order in QCD. The non-singlets obtained in this way, would allow to test the commonly used assumptions in global fit analysis and to test universality. This method is applied to kaon production data in e+e-\to K+X,\,K=K^\pm, K^0_s and (D_u-D_d)^{K^++K^-} is obtained without any assumptions. This result is compared to the existing parametrizations, obtained in global fit analysis.

The non-singlet kaon fragmentation function from e^+e^- kaon production

We perform fits to the available charged and neutral kaon production data in $e^++e^-\to K+X$, $K=K^\pm and K^0_S$, and determine the non-singlet combination of kaon fragmentation functions $D_u^{K^\pm}-D_d^{K^\pm}$ in a model independent way and without any correlations to the other fragmentation functions. Only nuclear isospin invariance is assumed. Working with non-singlets allows us to include the data at very low momentum fractions, which have so far been excluded in global fits, and to perform a first NNLO fit to fragmentation functions. We find that the kaon non-singlet fragmentation function at large $z$ is larger than that obtained by the other collaborations from global fit analysis and differs significantly at low $z$.

Charged Higgs production at the LHC and CP asymmetries

We study CP violation in associated production of a charged Higgs boson and a top quark at the LHC, $pp \to tH^\pm +X$. The asymmetry between the total cross sections for $H^+$ and $H^-$ production at next-to-leading order in the MSSM is calculated analytically and a detailed numerical analysis is performed. Furthermore, subsequent decays of $H^\pm$ to $tb$ and $ τ^\pm ν_τ$ are considered. In the case with $H^\pm \to tb$ decay the asymmetry can go up to $\sim$~12%.

CP violation in $H^\pm t$ production at the LHC

We study effects of CP violation in the associated production of a charged Higgs boson and a top quark at the LHC, $pp \to tH^\pm + X$. We calculate the CP violating asymmetry between the total cross section for $H^+$ and $H^-$ production at next-to-leading order in the MSSM, and perform a detailed numerical analysis. In the production the asymmetry is of the order of 20%. The asymmetry in the production and any subsequent decay of an on-shell charged Higgs boson is to a good approximation the sum of the asymmetry in the production and the asymmetry in the decay. We consider subsequent decays of $H^\pm $ to $t b$, $ν_ττ^\pm$ and $W h^0$. In the case with $H^\pm \to t b$ decay, mainly due to CP violating box graphs with gluino, the asymmetry can go up to $\sim$ 12%.

Parton fragmentation in the vacuum and in the medium

We present the mini-proceedings of the workshop on ``Parton fragmentation in the vacuum and in the medium'' held at the European Centre for Theoretical Studies in Nuclear Physics and Related Areas (ECT*, Trento) in February 2008. The workshop gathered both theorists and experimentalists to discuss the current status of investigations of quark and gluon fragmentation into hadrons at different accelerator facilities (LEP, B-factories, JLab, HERA, RHIC, and Tevatron) as well as preparations for extension of these studies at the LHC. The main physics topics covered were: (i) light-quark and gluon fragmentation in the vacuum including theoretical (global fits analyses and MLLA) and experimental (data from e+e-, p-p, e-p collisions) aspects, (ii) strange and heavy-quark fragmentation, (iii) parton fragmentation in cold QCD matter (nuclear DIS), and (iv) medium-modified fragmentation in hot and dense QCD matter (high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions). These mini-proceedings consist of an introduction and short summaries of the talks presented at the meeting.

CP violation in charged Higgs decays in the MSSM

In the MSSM with complex parameters loop corrections to the decays $H^+ \to t \bar{b}$ and $H^- \to \bar{t} b$ with $t \to b W$ and $W \to l ν$ lead to CP-violating asymmetries: a decay rate asymmetry, a forward-backward asymmetry and an energy asymmetry. We derive explicit formulas for them and perform a detailed numerical analysis. We study the dependence on the parameters and the phases involved. In particular, the influence of the running Yukawa coupling is taken into account. The decay rate asymmetry can go up to 25%, the forward-backward and the energy asymmetry up to 10%.

CP asymmetries in scalar bottom quark decays

We propose CP asymmetries based on triple product correlations in the decays sbottom_m -> top chargino_j with subsequent decays of top and chargino_j. For the subsequent chargino_j decay into a leptonic final state l^- νneutralino_1 we consider the three possible decay chains chargino_j -> l^- sneutrino -> l^- νneutralino_1, chargino_j -> slepton_n ν-> l^- νneutralino_1 and chargino_j -> W^- neutralino_1 -> l^- νneutralino_1. We consider two classes of CP asymmetries. In the first class it must be possible to distinguish between different leptonic chargino_j decay chains, whereas in the second class this is not necessary. We consider also the 2-body decay chargino_j -> W^- neutralino_1, and we assume that the momentum of the W boson can be measured. Our framework is the minimal supersymmetric standard model with complex parameters. The proposed CP asymmetries are non-vanishing due to non-zero phases for the parameters μand/or A_b. We present numerical results and estimate the observability of these CP asymmetries.

Triple product correlations in top squark decays

We propose several T-odd asymmetries in the decay chains of the top squarks $\tilde t_m \to t \tilde χ^0_k$ and $t\to bW^+\to blν$ and $\tildeχ^0_k \to l^\pm\tilde l_n^\mp \to l^\pm l^\mp\tildeχ^0_1$, for $l =e,μ,τ$. We calculate the asymmetries within the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model with complex parameters $M_1$, $μ$ and $A_t$. We give the analytic formulae for the decay distributions. We present numerical results for the asymmetries and estimate the event rates necessary to observe them. The largest T-odd asymmetry can be as large as 40%.

Supersymmetry through CP violation in $H^\pm \to W^\pm h^0$

The CP violating asymmetry between the partial decay rates of $H^+ \to W^+ h^0$ and $H^- \to W^- h^0$ is calculated at one-loop level in MSSM with complex parameters. The dependence on the phases of $A_τ$ and $M_1$ is discussed. Different values of $\tan β$ are considered. The asymmetry is up to the order of $10^{-2} $.
