A diagnostic system of 5.7 keV muon beam for muon accelerator

Realization of a low-emittance muon beam through the acceleration of keV-scale muons requires the injection of a suitably matched beam into an accelerator, since beam mismatch can lead to emittance growth and reduced acceleration efficiency. In one such scheme, muons are first thermalized to room temperature and then injected into a linear accelerator. Non-destructive diagnostics are challenging because of the low energy and low intensity. We developed a compact low-energy muon diagnostic system compatible with the accelerator under construction at J-PARC. The system is designed to evaluate beam conditions required for precise tuning prior to acceleration. Commissioning with low-energy muon sources shows the system's capability to identify low-energy muon signals and measure beam profiles.

Design and Manufacture of the RF Power Supply and RF Transmission Line for SANAEM Project Prometheus

A 1-5 MeV proton beamline is being built by the Turkish Atomic Energy Authority in collaboration with a number of graduate students from different universities. The primary goal of the project, is to acquire the design ability and manufacturing capability of all the components locally. SPP will be an accelerator and beam diagnostics test facility and it will also serve the detector development community with its low beam current. This paper discusses the design and construction of the RF power supply and the RF transmission line components such as its waveguide converters and its circulator. Additionally low and high power RF test results are presented to compare the performances of the locally produced components to the commercially available ones.

Pulsed Beam Tests at the SANAEM RFQ Beamline

A proton beamline consisting of an inductively coupled plasma (ICP) source, two solenoid magnets, two steerer magnets and a radio frequency quadrupole (RFQ) is developed at the Turkish Atomic Energy Authority's (TAEA) Saraykoy Nuclear Research and Training Center (SNRTC-SANAEM) in Ankara. In Q4 of 2016, the RFQ was installed in the beamline. The high power tests of the RF power supply and the RF transmission line were done successfully. The high power RF conditioning of the RFQ was performed recently. The 13.56 MHz ICP source was tested in two different conditions, CW and pulsed. The characterization of the proton beam was done with ACCTs, Faraday cups and a pepper-pot emittance meter. Beam transverse emittance was measured in between the two solenoids of the LEBT. The measured beam is then reconstructed at the entrance of the RFQ by using computer simulations to determine the optimum solenoid currents for acceptance matching of the beam. This paper will introduce the pulsed beam test results at the SANAEM RFQ beamline. In addition, the high power RF conditioning of the RFQ will be discussed.

Time-dependent transport in Aharonov-Bohm interferometers

A numerical approach is employed to explain transport characteristics in realistic, quantum Hall based Aharonov-Bohm interferometers. First, the spatial distribution of incompressible strips, and thus the current channels, are obtained applying a self-consistent Thomas-Fermi method to a realistic heterostructure under quantized Hall conditions. Second, the time-dependent Schrödinger equation is solved for electrons injected in the current channels. Distinctive Aharonov-Bohm oscillations are found as a function of the magnetic flux. The oscillation amplitude strongly depends on the mutual distance between the transport channels and on their width. At an optimal distance the amplitude and thus the interchannel transport is maximized, which determines the maximum visibility condition. On the other hand, the transport is fully suppressed at magnetic fields corresponding to half-integer flux quanta. The results confirm the applicability of realistic Aharonov-Bohm interferometers as controllable current switches.

Inferring the transport properties of edge-states formed at quantum Hall based Aharonov-Bohm interferometers theoretically

Here, we report on our results where self-consistent calculations are performed to investigate the interference conditions, numerically. We employ the successful 4$^{th}$ order grid technique to obtain the actual electrostatic quantities of the samples used at the quantum Hall based Aharonov-Bohm interferometers. By knowing the electron density distribution we calculate the spatial distribution of the edge-states, which are considered as mono-energetic current channels. Our results are in accord with the experimental findings concerning the electron density distribution. Finally, we also comment on the "optimized" sample design in which highest visibility oscillations can be measured.

Spatial Distribution of the Incompressible Strips at Aharonov-Bohm Interferometer

In this work, the edge physics of an Aharonov-Bohm interferometer (ABI) defined on a two dimensional electron gas, subject to strong perpendicular magnetic field B, is investigated. We solve the three dimensional Poisson equation using numerical techniques starting from the crystal growth parameters and surface image of the sample. The potential profiles of etched and gate defined geometries are compared and it is found that the etching yields a steeper landscape. The spatial distribution of the incompressible strips is investigated as a function of the gate voltage and applied magnetic field, where the imposed current is confined to. AB interference is investigated due to scattering processes between two incompressible "edge-states".

Realistic modelling of quantum point contacts subject to high magnetic fields and with current bias at out of linear response regime

The electron and current density distributions in the close proximity of quantum point contacts (QPCs) are investigated. A three dimensional Poisson equation is solved self-consistently to obtain the electron density and potential profile in the absence of an external magnetic field for gate and etching defined devices. We observe the surface charges and their apparent effect on the confinement potential, when considering the (deeply) etched QPCs. In the presence of an external magnetic field, we investigate the formation of the incompressible strips and their influence on the current distribution both in the linear response and out of linear response regime. A spatial asymmetry of the current carrying incompressible strips, induced by the large source drain voltages, is reported for such devices in the non-linear regime.

Theoretical investigation of the electron velocity in quantum Hall bars, in the out of linear response regime

We report on our theoretical investigation of the electron velocity in (narrow) quantum-Hall systems, considering the out-of-linear-response regime. The electrostatic properties of the electron system are obtained by the Thomas-Fermi-Poisson nonlinear screening theory. The electron velocity distribution as a function of the lateral coordinate is obtained from the slope of the screened potential within the incompressible strips (ISs). The asymmetry induced by the imposed current on the ISs is investigated, as a function of the current intensity and impurity concentration. We find that the width of the IS on one side of the sample increases linearly with the intensity of the applied current and decreases with the impurity concentration.

Where are the edge-states near the quantum point contacts? A self-consistent approach

In this work, we calculate the current distribution, in the close vicinity of the quantum point contacts (QPCs), taking into account the Coulomb interaction. In the first step, we calculate the bare confinement potential of a generic QPC and, in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field, obtain the positions of the incompressible edge states (IES) taking into account electron-electron interaction within the Thomas-Fermi theory of screening. Using a local version of the Ohm's law, together with a relevant conductivity model, we also calculate the current distribution. We observe that, the imposed external current is confined locally into the incompressible strips. Our calculations demonstrate that, the inclusion of the electron-electron interaction, strongly changes the general picture of the transport through the QPCs.

The effect of sample properties on the electron velocity in quantum Hall bars

We report on our theoretical investigation of the effects of the confining potential profile and sample size on the electron velocity distribution in (narrow) quantum-Hall systems. The electrostatic properties of the electron system are obtained by the Thomas-Fermi-Poisson nonlinear screening theory. The electron velocity distribution as a function of the lateral coordinate is obtained from the slope of the screened potential at the Fermi level and within the incompressible strips (ISs). We compare our findings with the recent experiments.
