Small-sized Dichroic Atomic Vapor Laser Lock (DAVLL)

Two, lightweight diode laser frequency stabilization systems designed for experiments in the field are described. A significant reduction in size and weight in both models supports the further miniaturization of measurement devices in the field. Similar to a previous design, magnetic-field lines are contained within a magnetic shield enclosing permanent magnets and a Rb cell, so that these DAVLL systems may be used for magnetically sensitive instruments. The Mini-DAVLL system (49 mm long) uses a vapor cell (20 mm long), and does not require cell heaters. An even smaller Micro-DAVLL system (9mm long) uses a micro-fabricated cell (3 mm square), and requires heaters. These new systems show no degradation in performance with regard to previous designs, while considerably reducing dimensions.

All-optical atomic magnetometers based on nonlinear magneto-optical rotation with amplitude modulated light

We demonstrate a magnetometric technique based on nonlinear magneto-optical rotation using amplitude modulated light. The magnetometers can be operated in either open-loop (typical nonlinear magneto-optical rotation with amplitude-modulated light) or closed-loop (self-oscillating) modes. The latter mode is particularly well suited for conditions where the magnetic field is changing by large amounts over a relatively short timescale.

Rubidium dimers in paraffin-coated cells

Measurements were made to determine the density of rubidium dimer vapor in paraffin-coated cells. The number density of dimers and atoms in similar paraffin-coated and uncoated cells was measured by optical spectroscopy. Due to the relatively low melting point of paraffin, a limited temperature range of 43-80 deg C was explored, with the lower end corresponding to a dimer density of less than 10^7 cm^(-3). With one-minute integration time, a sensitivity to dimer number density of better than 10^6 cm^(-3) was achieved. No significant difference in dimer density was observed between the cells.

Robust, High-speed, All-Optical Atomic Magnetometer

A self-oscillating magnetometer based on the nonlinear magneto-optical rotation effect with separate modulated pump and unmodulated probe beams is demonstrated. This device possesses a bandwidth exceeding $1\khz$. Pump and probe are delivered by optical fiber, facilitating miniaturization and modularization. The magnetometer has been operated both with vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs), which are well suited to portable applications, and with conventional edge-emitting diode lasers. A sensitivity of around $3 {\rm nG}$ is achieved for a measurement time of $1\s$.
