Measuring Leptonic CP Violation with a Water Cerenkov

In this talk, we present the physics case for a megaton Water Cerenkov detector in addressing some of the still pending questions in neutrino oscillations physics, particularly the measurement of leptonic CP violation. We compare different future beams that could profit from a water detector and analyse, for the case $θ_{13} \approx 3^\circ$ (the limit that can be reached by under-construction experiments), the signal-to-background rate for a $β$-beam setup with the radioactive ions accelerated to $γ= 350$.

Optimal $β$-beam at the CERN-SPS

A $β$-beam with maximum $γ=150$ (for $\helio$ ions) or $γ=250$ (for $\neon$) could be achieved at the CERN-SPS. We study the sensitivity to $θ_{13}$ and $δ$ of such a beam as function of $γ$, optimizing with the baseline constrained to CERN-Frejus (130 km), and also with simultaneous variation of the baseline. These results are compared to the {\it standard} scenario previously considered, with lower $γ=60/100$, and also with a higher $γ\sim 350$ option that requires a more powerful accelerator. Although higher $γ$ is better, loss of sensitivity to $θ_{13}$ and $δ$ is most pronounced for $γ$ below 100.
