Scaling laws for softened hadron production at LHC energies

In this paper, we conduct a data-driven study of the production of softened hadrons and their contribution to the transverse momentum spectrum. To this end, we assume that the production of charged particles at soft and hard scales fundamentally results from the fragmentation of color strings. We analyze the $p_\text{T}$-spectrum data from pp to AA collisions at LHC energies reported by the ALICE Collaboration, finding that, in all cases, the data can be collapsed into a $p_\text{T}$-exponential trend in the range 1 GeV$<p_\text{T}<$6 GeV. With this insight, the description of the $p_\text{T}$-spectrum should contain information on the charged particle production coming from two different sources: fragmentation of color strings and collective phenomena that redistribute the transverse momentum and enhance the production of particles at intermediate $p_\text{T}$. We also found different relations between the effective temperature, multiplicity, and average $p_\text{T}$ for pp and AA collisions, indicating inherent dissimilarities between small and large colliding systems. In contrast, the contribution of the softened hadrons to the $p_\text{T}$-spectrum and average $p_\text{T}$ collapse onto scaling laws. Our results show that the physical mechanisms producing softened hadrons have similar origins for all colliding systems, revealing a stronger dependence on freeze-out parameters rather than the system size.

Status and initial physics performance studies of the MPD experiment at NICA

The Nuclotron-base Ion Collider fAcility (NICA) is under construction at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR), with commissioning of the facility expected in late 2022. The Multi-Purpose Detector (MPD) has been designed to operate at NICA and its components are currently in production. The detector is expected to be ready for data taking with the first beams from NICA. This document provides an overview of the landscape of the investigation of the QCD phase diagram in the region of maximum baryonic density, where NICA and MPD will be able to provide significant and unique input. It also provides a detailed description of the MPD set-up, including its various subsystems as well as its support and computing infrastructures. Selected performance studies for particular physics measurements at MPD are presented and discussed in the context of existing data and theoretical expectations.

Two-component source to explain $Λ$ and $\barΛ$ global polarization in non-central heavy-ion collisions

The STAR Beam Energy Scan program has found a difference in the global polarization of $Λ$s and $\barΛ$s produced in $Au+Au$ collisions. This difference is larger for lower center of mass collision energies. In this work we show that a two-component source, consisting of a high density core and a lower density corona, can describe quantitatively the $Λ$ and $\barΛ$ polarization as a function of collision energy.

The energy density representation of the strangeness enhancement from p+p to Pb+Pb

The energy density is the prime parameter to define the deconfinement of quarks and gluons occurring in collisions of heavy ions. Recently, there is mounting evidence that many observables in proton-proton collisions behave in a manner very similar to the one observed in heavy ions. We present as an additional piece of evidence, a scaling of the strange particle yields as a function of the energy density of the three collision systems: p+p p+Pb and Pb+Pb, using the latest results of the ALICE collaboration.

VHMPID: a new detector for the ALICE experiment at LHC

This article presents the basic idea of VHMPID, an upgrade detector for the ALICE experiment at LHC, CERN. The main goal of this detector is to extend the particle identification capabilities of ALICE to give more insight into the evolution of the hot and dense matter created in Pb-Pb collisions. Starting from the physics motivations and working principles the challenges and current status of development is detailed.

Sensitivity of the parameters measured in pp collisions on the gluon PDF

The sphericity distribution in minimum bias events obtained with PYTHIA event generator, incorporating different parton distribution functions is presented. The results show that for minimum bias pp collisions the sphericity distribution for different parameters like the mean transverse momentum and multiplicity exhibit strong sensitivity on the parton distribution function used. The results indicate that early data at the LHC could be used in this type of analysis to fix the gluon distribution function in the proton.

Proton/pion ratios and radial flow in pp and peripheral heavy ion collisions

The production of baryon and mesons in the RHIC heavy-ion experiments has received a lot of attention lately. Although not widely known, the pp data measured concurrently with heavy ion collisions do not find a convincing explanation in terms of simple models. We present the results of an afterburner to Pythia and Hijing event generators, simulating radial flow which seems to qualitatively explain the experimental results when applied to the pp collision data from RHIC at 200 GeV center-of-mass energy.

Azimuthal Correlations in p-p collisions

We report the analysis of experimental azimuthal correlations measured by STAR in p-p collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV. We conclude that for a fit of data using Pythia event generator we need to include two values of $k_{T}$.

Production asymmetry of D mesons in $γp$ collisions

We study the production asymmetry of charm versus anticharm mesons in photon-proton interactions. We consider photon gluon fusion plus higher order corrections in which light quarks through vector meson-proton interactions contribute to the cross section. Non perturbative effects are included in terms of a recombination mechanism which gives rise to a production asymmetry.

Recent results on Charm Physics from Fermilab

New high statistics, high resolution fixed target experiments producing $10^5$ - $10^6$ fully reconstructed charm particles are allowing a detailed study of the charm sector. Recent results on charm quark production from Fermilab fixed target experiments E791, SELEX and FOCUS are presented.

Charge Asymmetries in charm photoproduction

Charm quarks are expected to be produced mainly by the photon-gluon fusion mechanism in photon-Nucleon interactions. However, a small part of the total charm cross section originates in similar processes to those appearing in charm hadroproduction through the resolved (hadronic) component of the photon. Although the contribution of the resolved part of the photon is small at fixed target energies, it can help to understand the small but sizeable charge asymmetries measured in charm hadron photoproduction experiments.

Effect of residual Bose-Einstein correlations on the Dalitz plot of hadronic charm meson decay

We show that the presence of residual Bose-Einstein correlations may affect the resonant contribution of hadronic charm decays where two identical pions appear in the final state. The distortion of the phase space of the reaction would be visible in the dalitz plot. The decay D+ --> K- pi+ pi+ is discussed but results can be generalized to any decay with identical bosons.
