Antiferromagnetic order and lattice response in DyCuAs$_2$

We report high-resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction and X-ray resonant magnetic scattering (XRMS) studies of the low-temperature crystal and magnetic structures of DyCuAs$_2$, a member of the \RE{}CuAs$_2$ family exhibiting a resistivity minimum above the antiferromagnetic transition temperature. Synchrotron diffraction measurements reveal that DyCuAs$_2$ preserves tetragonal symmetry down to low temperature within the experimental resolution, although pronounced anomalies in both lattice parameters $a$ and $c$ are observed near the antiferromagnetic transition temperature, $T_{\mathrm N}\approx7$~K, indicating strong magnetoelastic coupling. XRMS measurements at the Dy $L_3$ edge establish commensurate antiferromagnetic ordering below $T_{\mathrm N}$ with AFM Bragg peaks at \qq{} = (0, 0, 0.5). Representation analysis and calculations of the AFM Bragg peak intensities identify the magnetic structure as the $Γ_{10}$ representation, consisting of in-plane Dy moments stacked along the \cc{} axis in a $++--$ sequence. The magnetic structure is therefore identical to that previously reported for SmCuAs$_2$. Comparison among DyCuAs$_2$, SmCuAs$_2$, and GdCuAs$_2$ suggests that in-plane AFM order and the associated magnetic frustration on the tetragonal lattice are closely connected to the emergence of the resistivity minimum in the \RE{}CuAs$_2$ family. At the same time, the enhanced lattice response and stronger magnetic-field sensitivity observed in DyCuAs$_2$ imply that magnetoelastic and spin-orbit interactions additionally play important roles in determining the robustness of this anomalous transport behavior.

Low temperature magnetic structure and lattice response in SmCuAs$_2$

We investigated the structural and magnetic properties of single-crystalline SmCuAs$_2$ using high-resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction and X-ray resonant magnetic scattering (XRMS) at the Sm $L_2$ and $L_3$ edges. Temperature-dependent diffraction measurements confirm that SmCuAs$_2$ maintains its tetragonal symmetry from room temperature down to 8 K, with lattice parameters showing anomalous behavior below the resistivity minimum ($T \approx$ 30 K). Notably, the \textbf{c}-axis lattice parameter exhibits a plateau and subsequent increase near the Néel temperature, indicating magnetoelastic coupling. XRMS measurements reveal a commensurate antiferromagnetic structure with a propagation vector \textbf{\textit{q}} = (0, 0, 0.5). Our measurement shows that the Sm moments are aligned within the \textbf{\textit{ab}} plane and arranged in a $++--$ stacking along the \textbf{\textit{c}}-axis. Comparison with related \textit{RE}CuAs$_2$ compounds (\textit{RE} = Pr, Nd, and Gd) suggests that in-plane moment orientation and associated magnetic frustration play a key role in the emergence of the resistivity minimum. Differences in spin-orbit and magnetoelastic coupling across the series highlight their importance in governing low-temperature transport behavior.

Long-range magnetic order in the anisotropic triangular lattice system CeCd3As3

We report the physical properties of $R$Cd$_{3}$As$_{3}$ ($R$ = La and Ce) compounds, crystallized into a hexagonal ScAl$_{3}$C$_{3}$-type structure ($P$6$_{3}$/mmc) such that the $R$ sublattice forms a spin-orbit coupled triangular lattice. Magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate the 4$f$ electrons of Ce$^{3+}$ ions are well localized and reveal a large magnetic anisotropy. The electrical resistivity and specific heat measurement for $R$Cd$_{3}$As$_{3}$ exhibit an anomaly at high temperatures ($T_{0}$ $\sim$ 63 K for $R$ = La and $T_{0}$ $\sim$ 136 K for $R$ = Ce), most likely due to a structural transition. Specific heat measurements for CeCd$_{3}$As$_{3}$ clearly indicate a long range magnetic order below $T_{N}$ = 0.42 K. Although the magnetic contribution to the specific heat $C_{m}/T$ increases significantly below $\sim$ 10 K, the electrical resistivity for CeCd$_{3}$As$_{3}$ follows typical, metallic behavior inconsistent with Kondo lattice systems. In CeCd$_3$As$_3$ only $\sim$ 40 $\%$ of the $R \ln(2)$ magnetic entropy is recovered by $T_N$ and the $R$ln(2) entropy is fully achieved at about the Curie-Weiss temperature $|θ_{p}|$. Unusually, based on our current investigations, the magnetic specific heat below $|θ_{p}|$ is not attributed to a Kondo contribution, but rather associated with the magnetic ordering and frustration on the triangular lattice. Specific heat measurements in applied magnetic field show a negligible variation of $T_{N}$ for $H \parallel c$, whereas a suppression of $T_{N}$ is observed above 40 kOe for $H \parallel ab$. Such behavior is consistent with the application a magnetic field within the $ab$-plane breaking the triangular symmetry and partially relieving the magnetic frustration in this system.

Effects of a magnetic field on the fragile antiferromagnetism in YbBiPt

We present neutron diffraction data for the cubic-heavy-fermion YbBiPt that show broad magnetic diffraction peaks due to the fragile short-range antiferromagnetic (AFM) order persist under an applied magnetic-field $\mathbf{H}$. Our results for $\mathbf{H}\perp[\bar{1}~1~0]$ and a temperature of $T=0.14(1)$ K show that the $(\frac{1}{2},\frac{1}{2},\frac{3}{2})$ magnetic diffraction peak can be described by the same two-peak lineshape found for $μ_{0}H=0$ T below the Néel temperature of $T_{\text{N}}=0.4$ K. Both components of the peak exist for $μ_{0}H\lesssim1.4 T$, which is well past the AFM phase boundary determined from our new resistivity data. Using neutron diffraction data taken at $T=0.13(2)$ K for $\mathbf{H}\parallel[0~0~1]$ or $[1~1~0]$, we show that domains of short-range AFM order change size throughout the previously determined AFM and non-Fermi liquid regions of the phase diagram, and that the appearance of a magnetic diffraction peak at $(\frac{1}{2},\frac{1}{2},\frac{1}{2})$ at $μ_{0}H\approx0.4$ T signals canting of the ordered magnetic moment away from $[1~1~1]$. The continued broadness of the magnetic diffraction peaks under a magnetic field and their persistence across the AFM phase boundary established by detailed transport and thermodynamic experiments present an interesting quandary concerning the nature of YbBiPt's electronic ground state.

Successive magnetic field-induced transitions and colossal magnetoelectric effect in Ni$_{3}$TeO$_{6}$

We report the discovery of a metamagnetic phase transition in a polar antiferromagnet Ni$_3$TeO$_6$ that occurs at 52 T. The new phase transition accompanies a colossal magnetoelectric effect, with a magnetic-field-induced polarization change of 0.3 $μ$C/cm$^2$, a value that is 4 times larger than for the spin-flop transition at 9 T in the same material, and also comparable to the largest magnetically-induced polarization changes observed to date. Via density-functional calculations we construct a full microscopic model that describes the data. We model the spin structures in all fields and clarify the physics behind the 52 T transition. The high-field transition involves a competition between multiple different exchange interactions which drives the polarization change through the exchange-striction mechanism. The resultant spin structure is rather counter-intuitive and complex, thus providing new insights on design principles for materials with strong magnetoelectric coupling.

Remarkably robust and correlated coherence and antiferromagnetism in (Ce$_{1-x}$La$_x$)Cu$_2$Ge$_2$

We present magnetic susceptibility, resistivity, specific heat, and thermoelectric power measurements on (Ce$_{1-x}$La$_x$)Cu$_2$Ge$_2$ single crystals (0 $\leq x\leq$ 1). With La substitution, the antiferromagnetic temperature $T_N$ is suppressed in an almost linear fashion and moves below 0.36 K, the base temperature of our measurements for $x>$ 0.8. Surprisingly, in addition to robust antiferromagnetism, the system also shows low temperature coherent scattering below $T_{coh}$ up to $\sim$ 0.9 of La, indicating a small percolation limit $\sim$ 9$\%$ of Ce that separates a coherent regime from a single-ion Kondo impurity regime. $T_{coh}$ as a function of magnetic field was found to have different behavior for $x$< 0.9 and $x$> 0.9. Remarkably, $(T_{coh})^2$ at $H$ = 0 was found to be linearly proportional to $T_N$. The jump in the magnetic specific heat $δC_{m}$ at $T_N$ as a function of $T_K/T_N$ for (Ce$_{1-x}$La$_x$)Cu$_2$Ge$_2$ follows the theoretical prediction based on the molecular field calculation for the $S$ = 1/2 resonant level model.

Crystal growth and annealing study of fragile, non-bulk superconductivity in YFe$_2$Ge$_2$

We investigated the occurrence and nature of superconductivity in single crystals of YFe$_2$Ge$_2$ grown out of Sn flux by employing x-ray diffraction, electrical resistivity, and specific heat measurements. We found that the residual resistivity ratio (RRR) of single crystals can be greatly improved, reaching as high as $\sim$60, by decanting the crystals from the molten Sn at $\sim$350$^\circ$C and/or by annealing at temperatures between 550$^\circ$C and 600$^\circ$C. We found that samples with RRR $\gtrsim$ 34 showed resistive signatures of superconductivity with the onset of the superconducting transition $T_c\approx1.4$ K. RRR values vary between 35 and 65 with, on average, no systematic change in $T_c$ value, indicating that systematic changes in RRR do not lead to comparable changes in $T_c$. Specific heat measurements on samples that showed clear resistive signatures of a superconducting transition did not show any signature of a superconducting phase transition, which suggests that the superconductivity observed in this compound is either some sort of filamentary, strain stabilized superconductivity associated with small amounts of stressed YFe$_2$Ge$_2$ (perhaps at twin boundaries or dislocations) or is a second crystallographic phase present at levels below detection capability of conventional powder x-ray techniques.

Fragile antiferromagnetism in the heavy-fermion compound YbBiPt

We report results from neutron scattering experiments on single crystals of YbBiPt that demonstrate antiferromagnetic order characterized by a propagation vector, $τ_{\rm{AFM}}$ = ($\frac{1}{2} \frac{1}{2} \frac{1}{2}$), and ordered moments that align along the [1 1 1] direction of the cubic unit cell. We describe the scattering in terms of a two-Gaussian peak fit, which consists of a narrower component that appears below $T_{\rm{N}}~\approx 0.4$ K and corresponds to a magnetic correlation length of $ξ_{\rm{n}} \approx$ 80 $\rmÅ$, and a broad component that persists up to $T^*\approx$ 0.7 K and corresponds to antiferromagnetic correlations extending over $ξ_{\rm{b}} \approx$ 20 $\rmÅ$. Our results illustrate the fragile magnetic order present in YbBiPt and provide a path forward for microscopic investigations of the ground states and fluctuations associated with the purported quantum critical point in this heavy-fermion compound.

Multiferroicity with coexisting isotropic and anisotropic spins in Ca$_{3}$Co$_{2-x}$Mn$_{x}$O$_{6}$

We study magnetic and multiferroic behavior in Ca$_3$Co$_{2-x}$Mn$_{x}$O$_6$ ($x \sim$0.97) by high-field measurements of magnetization ($M$), magnetostriction ($L$($H$)/$L$), electric polarization ($P$), and magnetocaloric effect. This study also gives insight into the zero and low magnetic field magnetic structure and magnetoelectric coupling mechanisms. We measured $M$ and $Δ$$L$/$L$ up to pulsed magnetic fields of 92 T, and determined the saturation moment and field. On the controversial topic of the spin states of Co$^{2+}$ and Mn$^{4+}$ ions, we find evidence for $S$ = 3/2 spins for both ions with no magnetic field-induced spin-state crossovers. Our data also indicate that Mn$^{4+}$ spins are quasi-isotropic and develop components in the $ab$-plane in applied magnetic fields of 10 T. These spins cant until saturation at 85 T whereas the Ising Co$^{2+}$ spins saturate by 25 T. Furthermore, our results imply that mechanism for suppression of electric polarization with magnetic fields near 10 T is flopping of the Mn$^{4+}$ spins into the $ab$-plane, indicating that appropriate models must include the coexistence of Ising and quasi-isotropic spins.

Magnetic Field Induced Transition in Vanadium Spinels

We study vanadium spinels $A$V$_2$O$_4$ ($A$ = Cd, Mg) in pulsed magnetic fields up to 65 T. A jump in magnetization at $μ_0 H \approx$ 40 T is observed in the single-crystal MgV$_2$O$_4$, indicating a field induced quantum phase transition between two distinct magnetic orders. In the multiferroic CdV$_2$O$_4$, the field-induced transition is accompanied by a suppression of the electric polarization. By modeling the magnetic properties in the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling characteristic of vanadium spinels, we show that both features of the field-induced transition can be successfully explained by including the effects of the local trigonal crystal field.

Quantum oscillations and optical conductivity in Rashba spin-splitting BiTeI

We report the observation of Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations in single crystals of the Rashba spin-splitting compound BiTeI, from both longitudinal ($R_{xx}(B)$) and Hall ($R_{xy}(B)$) magnetoresistance. Under magnetic field up to 65 T, we resolved unambiguously only one frequency $F = 284.3\pm 1.3$ T, corresponding to a Fermi momentum $k_{F} = 0.093\pm 0.002$Å$^{-1}$.The amplitude of oscillations is strongly suppressed by tilting magnetic field, suggesting a highly two-dimensional Fermi surface. Combining with optical spectroscopy, we show that quantum oscillations may be consistent with a bulk conduction band having a Rashba splitting momentum $k_{R}=0.046\pm$Å$^{-1}$.

Magnetic field tuned quantum criticality of heavy fermion system YbPtBi

In this paper, we present the systematic measurements of the temperature and magnetic field dependences of the thermodynamic and transport properties of the Yb-based heavy fermion YbPtBi for temperatures down to 0.02 K with magnetic fields up to 140 kOe to address the possible existence of a field-tuned quantum critical point. Measurements of magnetic field and temperature dependent resistivity, specific heat, thermal expansion, Hall effect, and thermoelectric power indicate that the AFM order can be suppressed by applied magnetic field of $H_{c}$ $\sim$ 4 kOe. In the $H-T$ phase diagram of YbPtBi, three regimes of its low temperature states emerges: (I) AFM state, characterized by spin density wave (SDW) like feature, which can be suppressed to $T$ = 0 by the relatively small magnetic field of $H_{c}$ $\sim$ 4\,kOe, (II) field induced anomalous state in which the electrical resistivity follows $Δρ(T) \propto T^{1.5}$ between $H_{c}$ and $\sim$ 8 kOe, and (III) Fermi liquid (FL) state in which $Δρ(T) \propto T^{2}$ for $H \geq$ 8 kOe. Regions I and II are separated at $T$ = 0 by what appears to be a quantum critical point. Whereas region III appears to be a FL associated with the hybridized 4$f$ states of Yb, region II may be a manifestation of a spin liquid state.

Thermoelectric Power of the YbT$_{2}$Zn$_{20}$ (T = Fe, Ru, Os, Ir, Rh, and Co) Heavy Fermions

The thermoelectric power, $S(T)$, of the heavy fermions YbT$_{2}$Zn$_{20}$ ($T$ = Fe, Ru, Os, Ir, Rh, and Co) has been measured to characterize their strong electronic correlations. A large, negative, local minimum in $S(T)$ with approximately -70 $μ$V/K is found for all compounds. From the observed local minimum, the energy scales associated with both the Kondo temperature and the crystalline electric field splitting are deduced and compared to previous specific heat measurements. At low temperatures, $S(T)$ follows a linear temperature dependence, $S(T)$ = $αT$, with an enhanced value of $α$ which is characteristic for a heavy fermion state. In the zero temperature limit, the enhanced $α$ value strongly correlates with the electronic specific heat coefficient, $C(T)/T$, due to the large density of states at the Fermi level.

Synthesis and physical properties of the new potassium iron selenide superconductor K0.80Fe1.76Se2

In this article we review our studies of the K0.80Fe1.76Se2 superconductor, with an attempt to elucidate the crystal growth details and basic physical properties over a wide range of temperatures and applied magnetic field, including anisotropic magnetic and electrical transport properties, thermodynamic, London penetration depth, magneto-optical imaging and Mossbauer measurements. We find that: (i) Single crystals of similar stoichiometry can be grown both by furnace-cooled and decanted methods; (ii) Single crystalline K0.80Fe1.76Se2 shows moderate anisotropy in both magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity and a small modulation of stoichiometry of the crystal, which gives rise to broadened transitions; (iii) The upper critical field, Hc2(T) is ~ 55 T at 2 K for H||c, manifesting a temperature dependent anisotropy that peaks near 3.6 at 27 K and drops to 2.5 by 18 K; (iv) Mossbauer measurements reveal that the iron sublattice in K0.80Fe1.76Se2 clearly exhibits magnetic order, probably of the first order, from well below Tc to its Neel temperature of Tn = 532 +/- 2 K. It is very important to note that, although, at first glance there is an apparent dilemma posed by these data: high Tc superconductivity in a near insulating, large ordered moment material, analysis indicates that the sample may well consist of two phases with the minority superconducting phase (that does not exhibit magnetic order) being finely distributed, but connected with in an antiferromagnetic, poorly conducting, matrix, essentially making a superconducting aerogel.

Structural, electronic, magnetic, and thermal properties of single-crystalline UNi0.5Sb2

We studied the properties of the antiferromagnetic (AFM) UNi0.5Sb2 (TN \approx 161 K) compound in Sb-flux grown single crystals by means of measurements of neutron diffraction, magnetic susceptibility (χ), specific heat (Cp), thermopower (S), thermal conductivity (κ), linear thermal expansion (ΔL/L), and electrical resistivity (ρ) under hydrostatic pressures (P) up to 22 kbar. The neutron diffraction measurements revealed that the compound crystallizes in the tetragonal P42/nmc structure, and the value of the U-moments yielded by the histograms at 25 K is \approx 1.85 \pm 0.12 μB/U-ion. In addition to the features in the bulk properties observed at TN, two other hysteretic features centered near 40 and 85 K were observed in the measurements of χ, S, ρ, and ΔL/L. Hydrostatic pressure was found to raise TN at the rate of \approx 0.76 K/kbar, while suppressing the two low temperature features. These features are discussed in the context of Fermi surface and hybridization effects.

Multiferroic behavior in the new double-perovskite Lu$_2$MnCoO$_6$

We present a new member of the multiferroic oxides, Lu$_2$MnCoO$_6$, which we have investigated using X-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction, specific heat, magnetization, electric polarization, and dielectric constant measurements. This material possesses an electric polarization strongly coupled to a net magnetization below 35 K, despite the antiferromagnetic ordering of the $S = 3/2$ Mn$^{4+}$ and Co$^{2+}$ spins in an $\uparrow \uparrow \downarrow \downarrow$ configuration along the c-direction. We discuss the magnetic order in terms of a condensation of domain boundaries between $\uparrow \uparrow$ and $\downarrow \downarrow$ ferromagnetic domains, with each domain boundary producing a net electric polarization due to spatial inversion symmetry breaking. In an applied magnetic field the domain boundaries slide, controlling the size of the net magnetization, electric polarization, and magnetoelectric coupling.

Phase diagram of CeVSb3 under pressure and its dependence on pressure conditions

We present temperature dependent resistivity and ac-calorimetry measurements of CeVSb3 under pressure up to 8 GPa in a Bridgman anvil cell modified to use a liquid medium and in a diamond anvil cell using argon as a pressure medium, respectively. We observe an initial increase of the ferromagnetic transition temperature Tc with pressures up to 4.5 GPa, followed by decrease of Tc on further increase of pressure and finally its disappearance, in agreement with the Doniach model. We infer a ferromagnetic quantum critical point around 7 GPa under hydrostatic pressure conditions from the extrapolation to 0 K of Tc and the maximum of the A coefficient from low temperature fits of the resistivity ρ(T)=ρ_{0}+AT^{n}. No superconductivity under pressure was observed down to 0.35 K for this compound. In addition, differences in the Tc(P) behavior when a slight uniaxial component is present are noticed and discussed and correlated to choice of pressure medium.

Anisotropic Hc2 of K0.8Fe1.76Se2 determined up to 60 T

The anisotropic upper critical field, Hc2(T), curves for K0.8Fe1.76Se2 are determined over a wide range of temperatures down to 1.5 K and magnetic fields up to 60 T. Anisotropic initial slopes of Hc2 ~ -1.4 T/K and -4.6 T/K for magnetic field applied along c-axis and ab-plane, respectively, were observed. Whereas the c-axis Hc2|c(T) increases quasi-linearly with decreasing temperature, the ab-plane Hc2|ab(T) shows a flattening, starting near 25 K above 30 T. This leads to a non-monotonic temperature dependence of the anisotropy parameter γ= Hc2|ab/Hc2|c. The anisotropy parameter is ~ 2 near Tc ~ 32 K and rises to a maximum γ~ 3.6 around 27 K. For lower temperatures, γdecreases with T in a linear fashion, dropping to γ~ 2.5 by T ~ 18 K. Despite the apparent differences between the K0.8Fe1.76Se2 and (Ba0.55K0.45)Fe2As2 or Ba(Fe0.926Co0.074)2As2, in terms of the magnetic state and proximity to an insulating state, the Hc2(T) curves are remarkably similar.
