Continuous measurements in a composite quantum system and possible exchange of information between its parts

We study an influence of the continuous measurement in a composite quantum system C on the evolution of the states of its parts. It is shown that the character of the evolution (decoherence or recoherence) depends on the type of the measured quantity and on the initial state of the system. A number of conditions under which the states of the subsystems of C decohere during the measuring process are established. We propose a model of the composite system and specify the observable the measurement of which may result in the recoherence of the state of one of the subsystems of C. In the framework of this model we find the optimal regime for the exchange of information between the parts of C during the measurement. The main characteristics of such a process are computed. We propose a scheme of detection of the recoherence under the measurement in a concrete physical experiment.

Diagnostics of macroscopic quantum states of Bose-Einstein condensate in double-well potential by nonstationary Josephson effect

We propose a method of diagnostic of a degenerate ground state of Bose condensate in a double well potential. The method is based on the study of the one-particle coherent tunneling under switching the time-dependent weak Josephson coupling between the wells. We obtain a simple expression that allows to determine the phase of the condensate and the total number of the particles in the condensate from the relative number of the particles in two wells $Δn =n_1-n_2$ measured before the Josephson coupling is switched on and after it is switched off. The specifics of the application of the method in the cases of the external and the internal Josephson effect are discussed.

Metastable bound state of a pair of two-dimensional spatially separated electrons in anti-parallel magnetic fields

We propose a new mechanism for binding of two equally charged carriers in a double-layer system subjected by a magnetic field of a special form. A field configuration for which the magnetic fields in adjacent layers are equal in magnitude and opposite in direction is considered. In such a field an additional integral of motion - the momentum of the pair P arises. For the case when in one layer the carrier is in the zero (n=0) Landau level while in the other layer - in the first (n=1) Landau level the dependence of the energy of the pair on its momentum E(P} is found. This dependence turns out to be nonmonotonic one : a local maximum and a local minimum appears, indicating the emergence of a metastable bound state of two carrier with the same sign of electrical charge.

Coupling of spatially separated carriers in crossed electric and magnetic fields and a possibility of a metastable superconducting state in bilayer systems

It is shown that in bilayer conducting structures in crossed electric and magnetic fields of a special configuration (the fields should have opposite signs in the adjacent layers) the dependence of the energy of a pair of equally charged carriers on the momentum of the pair has a local minimum. This minimum corresponds to a bound state of the pair. The local minimum is separated from the absolute minimum by a large energy barrier. That provides the stability of the bound state with respect to different scattering processes. If the number of the pairs is macroscopic, a phase transition into a metastable superconducting state may take place.

Magnetic flux locking in two weakly coupled superconducting rings

We have analyzed the quantum interference effects in the macroscopic ''superconducting molecule''. The composite system consists of two massive superconducting rings, each interrupted by a Josephson junction, which are at the same time weakly coupled with one another. The special case of coupling via the Josephson four-terminal junction is considered. The structure of the macroscopic quantum states in an applied magnetic field is calculated. It is shown, that depending on the values of the magnetic fluxes through each ring, the system displays two groups of states, the ''orthostates'' with both induced currents going in the same direction, and the ''parastates'' with the opposite currents and with the total induced flux locked to zero value. The transition to the flux locked state with changing of the total applied flux is sudden and is preserved in a certain interval which is determined by the difference of the fluxes applied through each ring. It makes the system sensitive to small gradients of the external magnetic field.
