Insulator-Metal Transition in One Dimension Induced by Long-Range Electronic Interactions

The effects of a long range electronic potential on a one dimensional commensurate Charge Density Wave (CDW) state are investigated. Using numerical techniques it is shown that a transition to a metallic ground state is reached as the range of the electron-electron repulsion increases. In this metallic state, the optical conductivity exhibits a large Drude weight. Possible interpretations of our results are discussed.

Dynamical properties of the spin-Peierls compound α'--NaV2O5

Dynamical properties of the novel inorganic spin-Peierls compound α'--NaV2O5 are investigated using a one-dimensional dimerized Heisenberg model. By exact diagonalizations of chains with up to 28 sites, supplemented by a finite-size scaling analysis, the dimerization parameter δis determined by requiring that the model reproduces the experimentally observed spin gap Δ. The dynamical and static spin structure factors are calculated. As for CuGeO3, the existence of a low energy magnon branch separated from the continuum is predicted. The present calculations also suggest that a large magnetic Raman scattering intensity should appear above an energy threshold of 1.9 Δ. The predicted photoemission spectrum is qualitatively similar to results for an undimerized chain due to the presence of sizable short-range antiferromagnetic correlations.

One particle spectral weight of the three dimensional single band Hubbard model

Dynamic properties of the three-dimensional single-band Hubbard model are studied using Quantum Monte Carlo combined with the maximum entropy technique. At half-filling, there is a clear gap in the density of states and well-defined quasiparticle peaks at the top (bottom) of the lower (upper) Hubbard band. We find an antiferromagnetically induced weight above the naive Fermi momentum. Upon hole doping, the chemical potential moves to the top of the lower band where a robust peak is observed. Results are compared with spin-density-wave (SDW) mean-field and self consistent Born approximation results, and also with the infinite dimensional Hubbard model, and experimental photoemission (PES) for three dimensional transition-metal oxides.

Spontaneous Coherence and Collective Modes in Double-Layer Quantum Dot Systems

We study the ground state and the collective excitations of parabolically-confined double-layer quantum dot systems in a strong magnetic field. We identify parameter regimes where electrons form maximum density droplet states, quantum-dot analogs of the incompressible states of the bulk integer quantum Hall effect. In these regimes the Hartree-Fock approximation and the time-dependent Hartree-Fock approximations can be used to describe the ground state and collective excitations respectively. We comment on the relationship between edge excitations of dots and edge magneto-plasmon excitations of bulk double-layer systems.

Spin dynamics of SrCu$_2$O$_3$ and the Heisenberg ladder

The $S=1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet in the ladder geometry is studied as a model for the spin degrees of freedom of SrCu$_2$O$_3$. The susceptibility and the spin echo decay rate are calculated using a quantum Monte Carlo technique, and the spin-lattice relaxation rate is obtained by maximum entropy analytic continuation of imaginary time correlation functions. All calculated quantities are in reasonable agreement with experimental results for SrCu$_2$O$_3$ if the exchange coupling $J \approx 850$K, i.e. significantly smaller than in high-T$_c$ cuprates.

Superconductivity in the Cuprates as a Consequence of Antiferromagnetism and a Large Hole Density of States

We briefly review a theory for the cuprates that has been recently proposed based on the movement and interaction of holes in antiferromagnetic (AF) backgrounds. A robust peak in the hole density of states (DOS) is crucial to produce a large critical temperature once a source of hole attraction is identified. The predictions of this scenario are compared with experiments. The stability of the calculations after modifying some of the original assumptions is addressed. We find that if the dispersion is changed from an antiferromagnetic band at half-filling to a tight binding $cosk_x + cosk_y$ narrow band at $ =0.87$, the main conclusions of the approach remain basically the same i.e. superconductivity appears in the $d_{x^2 - y^2}$-channel and $T_c$ is enhanced by a large DOS. The main features distinguishing these ideas from more standard theories based on antiferromagnetic correlations are here discussed.

Heavy Quasiparticles in the Anderson Lattice Model

An exact-diagonalization technique on small clusters is used to study the dynamics of the one-dimensional symmetric Anderson lattice model. Our calculated excitation spectra reproduce key features expected for an infinite Kondo lattice such as nearly localized low-energy spin excitations and extended regions of `heavy-quasiparticle' bands. We show that, in contrast to the hybridization picture, low-energy spin excitations of the nearly-localized $f$-electron system play a key role in the formation of an almost dispersionless low-energy band of heavy quasiparticles.

Surprises on the Way from 1D to 2D Quantum Magnets: the Novel Ladder Materials

One way of making the transition between the quasi-long range order in a chain of S=1/2 spins coupled antiferromagnetically and the true long range order that occurs in a plane, is by assembling chains to make ladders of increasing width. Surprisingly this crossover between one and two dimensions is not at all smooth. Ladders with an even number of legs have purely short range magnetic order and a finite energy gap to all magnetic excitations. Predictions of this novel groundstate have now been verified experimentally. Holes doped into these ladders are predicted to pair, and possibly superconduct.

Spin Dynamics of Hole Doped ${\rm Y_{2-x} Ca_x Ba Ni O_5}$

We propose an electronic model for the recently discovered hole doped compound ${\rm Y_{2-x} Ca_x Ba Ni O_5 }$. From a multiband Hamiltonian with oxygen and nickel orbitals, a one band model is derived. Holes are described using Zhang-Rice-like S=1/2 states at the nickels propagating on a S=1 spin chain. Using numerical techniques to calculate the dynamical spin structure factor ${\rm S(q,ω)}$ in a realistic regime of couplings, spectral weight in the Haldane gap is observed in agreement with neutron scattering data. Low energy states with S=3/2 appear in the model. Several predictions are made to test these ideas.

Study of ARPES data and d-wave superconductivity using electronic models in two dimensions

We review the results of an extensive investigation of photoemission spectral weight using electronic models for the high-Tc superconductors. Here we show that some recently reported unusual features of the cuprates namely the presence of (i) flat bands, (ii) small quasiparticle bandwidths, and (iii) antiferromagnetically induced weight, have all a natural explanation within the context of holes moving in the presence of robust antiferromagnetic correlations. Introducing interactions among the hole carriers, a model is constructed which has ${\rm d_{x^2 - y^2}}$ superconductivity, an optimal doping of $\sim 15\%$ (caused by the presence of a large density of states at the top of the valence band), and a critical temperature $\sim 100K$.

Photoemission spectra of ${\rm Sr_2 Cu O_2 Cl_2}$: a theoretical analysis

Recent angle resolved photoemission (ARPES) results for the insulating cuprate ${\rm Sr_2 Cu O_2 Cl_2}$ have provided the first experimental data which can be directly compared to the (theoretically) well--studied problem of a single hole propagating in an antiferromagnet. The ARPES results reported a small bandwidth, providing evidence for the existence of strong correlations in the cuprates. However, in the same experiment some discrepancies with the familiar 2D ${\rm t-J}$ model were also observed. Here we discuss a comparison between the ARPES results and the quasiparticle dispersion of both (i) the ${\rm t-t'-J}$ Hamiltonian and (ii) the three--band Hubbard model in the strong--coupling limit. Both model Hamiltonians show that the experimentally observed one--hole band structure can be approximately reproduced using reasonable values for ${\rm t'}$, or the direct oxygen hopping amplitude ${\rm t_{pp}}$.

Quasiparticle dispersion of the t-J and Hubbard models

The spectral weight ${\rm A({\bf p},ω)}$ of the two dimensional ${\rm t-J}$ and Hubbard models has been calculated using exact diagonalization and quantum Monte Carlo techniques, at several densities ${\rm 1.0 \leq \langle n \rangle \leq 0.5}$. The photoemission $(ω< 0)$ region contains two dominant distinct features, namely a low-energy quasiparticle peak with bandwidth of order J, and a broad valence band peak at energies of order t. This behavior $persists$ away from half-filling, as long as the antiferromagnetic (AF) correlations are robust. The results give support to theories of the copper oxide materials based on the behavior of holes in antiferromagnets, and it also provides theoretical guidance for the interpretation of experimental photoemission data for the cuprates.

Is there spin-charge separation in the 2D Hubbard and t-J models at low electronic densities?

The spin and density correlation functions of the two-dimensional Hubbard model at low electronic density $ $ are calculated in the ground state by using the power method, and at finite temperatures by using the quantum Monte Carlo technique. Both approaches produce similar results, which are in close agreement with numerical and high temperature expansion results for the two-dimensional ${\rm t-J}$ model. Using perturbative approximations, we show that the examination of the density correlation function alone is not enough to support recent claims in the literature that suggested spin and charge separation in the low electronic density regime of the ${\rm t-J}$ model.

Superconductivity Near Phase Separation in Models of Correlated Electrons

Numerical and analytical studies of several models of correlated electrons are discussed. Based on exact diagonalization and variational Monte Carlo techniques, we have found strong indications that the two dimensional t-J model superconducts near phase separation in the regime of quarter-filling density, in agreement with previous results reported by Dagotto and Riera (Phys. Rev. Letters 70, 682 (1993)). At this density the dominant channel is d_{x^2-y^2}, but a novel transition to s-wave superconductivity is observed decreasing the electronic density. In addition, the one band t-U-V model has also been studied using the mean-field approximation that accurately described the spin density wave phase of the repulsive Hubbard model at half-filling. Finally, the two band Hubbard model on a chain is also analyzed. Superconducting correlations near phase separation exist in this model, as it occurs in the t-J model. Based on these nontrivial examples it is $conjectured$ that electronic models tend to have superconducting phases in the vicinity of phase separation.Reciprocally, if it is established that a model that does not phase separate, then its chances of presenting a superconducting phase are considerably reduced.

Bound states of holes in an antiferromagnet

The formation of bound states of holes in an antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 background is studied using numerical techniques applied to the ${\rm t-J}$ Hamiltonian on clusters with up to 26 sites. An analysis of the binding energy as a function of cluster size suggests that a two hole bound state is formed for couplings larger than a ``critical'' value ${\rm J/t]_c}$. The symmetry of the bound state is $\dx2y2$. We also observed that its ``quasiparticle'' weight ${\rm Z_{2h}}$ (defined in the text), is finite for all values of the coupling ${\rm J/t}$. Thus, in the region ${\rm J/t \geq J/t]_c}$ the bound state of two holes behaves like a quasiparticle with charge $Q=2e$, spin $S=0$, and $\dx2y2$ internal symmetry. The relation with recent ideas that have suggested the possibility of d-wave pairing in the high temperature cuprate superconductors is briefly discussed.

Spin Gap and Superconductivity in the One-Dimensional t-J Model with Coulomb Repulsion

The one-dimensional t-J model with density-density repulsive interactions is investigated using exact diagonalization and quantum Monte Carlo methods. A short-range repulsion pushes phase separation to larger values of J/t, and leads to a widened precursor region in which a spin gap and strengthened superconducting correlations appear. The correlation exponent is calculated. On the contrary, a long-range repulsion of $1/r$-form suppresses superconductivity in the precursor region.

Generalized spin density wave state of the Hubbard model on the C12 and C60 clusters

The one-band Hubbard model at half-filling on a truncated tetrahedron (C$_{12}$), and on the C$_{60}$ molecule is studied. Within the Hartree-Fock approximation, we find a magnetic-like instability of the `Fermi sea' towards a spin-ordered phase for an intermediate value of the coupling ${\rm (U/t)_c}\approx 2.6$. The ordered phase presents a spin arrangement similar to that of the classical Heisenberg model defined on the same clusters. We study the linear excitations around the Hartree-Fock ground states using the random-phase approximation. On a finite cluster, we expect that these results signal the presence of a $rapid$ $crossover$ between a paramagnetic region and a regime where spin correlations are important. The relationship with the Heisenberg limit (large ${\rm U/t}$) is discussed. Finally, we comment on implications of our results for purely repulsive models of superconductivity in alkali-metal-doped fullerenes.
