Abnormal dense and dilute nuclear systems

Researchers have long been interested in exotic states of matter. In the early 1970s, Migdal proposed the existence of metastable or stable nuclei containing a pion condensate, and Bodmer posited the existence of collapsed nuclei with a quark core. Lee and Wick proposed that compressed nuclear matter could undergo a phase transition into a scalar condensate state with effectively very light baryons. In the mid-1980s, Witten pointed out that strange quark matter may be an absolutely stable form of matter that can exist in the form of quark strangelets. These hypotheses stimulated large experimental efforts to detect these states in heavy-ion collisions and in terrestrial samples. Additionally, the cosmos is the arena for a broad search for traces of exotic matter in compact objects and other energetic phenomena. We review various approaches and arguments for the possibility of abnormal states of matter, including metastable and stable dense objects with condensates, as well as dilute nuclear objects. Among these, we discuss scalar condensate and p-wave and s-wave pion condensations in dense nuclear systems and the formation of a $Δ$ resonance matter. Then we consider a scalar mode condensation triggered by the Pomeranchuk instability in dilute nuclear matter, and clustering. We also mention recent ideas that a relativistic rotation and a dark-matter component may stabilize abnormal nuclear systems. Finally, we list some observational anomalies that cannot yet be appropriately explained by conventional physics.

The NICER data and a $σ$-field dependent stiffness of the hadronic equation of state

Analyses for the NICER data indicate that there is no significant variation of the compact star radii within the mass range of 1.4 to 2.0 solar masses. Yamamoto et al. [Phys. Rev. C 108, 035811 (2023)] concluded recently that ``this feature cannot be reproduced by the hadronic matter due to the softening of the equation of state (EoS) by hyperon mixing, suggesting the possible existence of quark phases in neutron-star interiors.'' Using a collection of 162 purely nucleonic, hyperonic, and quarkish EoSs from CompOSE database and some other works, we verify that hyperons indeed lead to a significant difference in radii of stars of 1.4 and 2.0 solar masses, which diminishes in the presence of quarks. We compare the shapes of the mass-radius curves and show that hyperons and quarks in the neutron star cores prefer a particular curve shape with backbending. It is argued that the shape {is controlled by the density dependence} of the nuclear symmetry energy. We draw attention to the existence of a class of purely hadronic relativistic mean-field EoSs with scalar-field dependent hadron masses and coupling constants that satisfy the known constraints on the EoSs including the analyses of the new NICER data and the above requirement of no significant variation of the neutron star radii.

Conserving approximations to dilute equilibrium systems. Pair interaction potential

We study self-consistent approximations such as the $Φ$-derivable and virial approaches to dilute strongly interacting systems in equilibrium. We consider a system of non-relativistic fermions of one kind interacting via a pair potential Thermodynamical quantities are expressed in terms of various spectral functions. We review the $Φ$ derivable approximation scheme demonstrating the exact conservation of the Noether and the Botermans-Malfliet fermion number densities, and then for $Φ$ described by the tadpole and sandwich diagrams we show the coincidence of these two number densities. As examples of test pair potentials, we consider the Yukawa central nucleon-nucleon potentials within Walecka, CD Bonn, and Reid parameterizations, and the corresponding classical Lennard-Jones potentials. Expressions for the second and third virial coefficients are derived and analyzed for $Φ$ described by the tadpole and sandwich diagrams. Next, we focus on the virial approach to the equation of state. Classical, semiclassical, and purely quantum approaches are studied in detail. Then, different extrapolations of the virial equation of state are considered including the van~der~Waals form and excluded-volume models. We derive the expression for the second virial coefficient using the effective range approximation for the scattering amplitude and compare the result with the purely quantum result using the experimental phase shifts. Attention is focused on the problem of anomalously large value of the nucleon-nucleon scattering length appearing due to the presence of the quasi-bound state in nucleon-nucleon scattering, which can be destroyed in the matter because of the action of the Pauli blocking. We present results for the second virial coefficient subtracting this term. We discuss the validity of such a procedure to describe the equation of state of the nuclear matter in the virial limit.

Helicity and vorticity in heavy-ion collisions at NICA energies

Heavy-ion collisions at center-of-mass nucleon collision energies 4.5--11.5 GeV are analyzed within the PHSD transport model. Spectator nucleons are separated, and the transfer of the initial angular momentum of colliding nuclei to the fireball formed by participants is studied. The maximal angular momentum is carried by the fireball in gold-gold collisions with the impact parameter about 5 fm corresponding to centrality class 10--20\%. The obtained participant distributions were fluidized and the energy and baryon number densities, temperature, and velocity fields are obtained in the Landau frame. It is shown that the velocity field has dominantly Hubble-like transversal and longitudinal expansion with the vortical motion being only a small correction on top of it. The vorticity field is calculated and illustrated in detail. The formation of two oppositely-rotating vortex rings moving in opposite directions along the $z$ axis is demonstrated. Other characteristics of the vortical motion such as the Lamb vector field and the kinematic vorticity number are considered. The magnitude of the latter one is found to be smaller than that for the Poiseuille flow and close to the pure shear deformation corresponding to just a flattening of fluid cells. The field of hydrodynamic helicity, which is responsible for the axial vortex effect, is calculated. The separation of positive and negative helicities localized upper and lower semi-planes with respect to the reaction plane is shown. It is proved that the areas with various helicity signs can be probed by the selection of $Λ$ hyperons with positive and negative projections of their momenta orthogonal to the reaction plane.

Hyperon global polarization in heavy-ion collisions at NICA energies. Feed-down effects and the role of $Σ^0$ hyperons

Global polarization of hyperons induced by the local vorticity of the medium created in heavy-ion collisions at energies 2.3\,GeV$\le\sqrt{s_{NN}}\le$11.5 GeV is calculated in the parton-hadron-string dynamic (PHSD) model. The separation of spectator nucleons and the fluidization of the generated particle distributions are performed. The polarization of all anti-hyperon species is found significantly larger than that of hyperons. The $\overlineΞ$ hyperons are found to be polarized as strong as $\overlineΛ$s but $Ξ$ hyperons have weaker polarization compared to $Λ$s. The $Ω$ and $\overlineΩ$ polarizations show the strongest dependence on the collision energy. Despite the strong polarization of the produced $Λ$s and $\overlineΛ$s induced by the vortical flows in the medium, the observed polarization signal is significantly depleted because of the feed down from weak and electromagnetic decays of heavier hyperons. Particularly strong suppression is found to be due to electromagnetic decays of $Σ^0$ hyperons, which multiplicities obtained in the transport are poorly constrained both from the microscopic input of the $Σ^0$ production reactions and from the experimental data. The final $Λ(\overlineΛ)$ polarization signal strongly depends on the $Σ^0$ multiplicity generated in the model. With all these effects we can reproduce the measured global $Λ$ polarization in collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=7.7$ and $11.5$ GeV and the global $\overlineΛ$ polarization at 11.5 GeV. For energies $< 3$ GeV, the calculated $Λ$ polarization is smaller than the observed one. The polarization of $Ξ(\overlineΞ)$ hyperons is calculated. The signal of $Ξ(\overlineΞ)$ polarization is argued to be insensitive to feed-down effects and be a more direct probe of the degree of the vorticity in the system.

Hybrid model with viscous relativistic hydrodynamics: a role of constraints on the shear-stress tensor

We present the hybrid hadron string dynamic (HydHSD) model connecting the parton-hadron-string dynamic model (PHSD) and a hydrodynamic model taking into account shear viscosity within the Israel-Stewart approach. The performance of the code is tested on the pion and proton rapidity and transverse mass distributions calculated for Au+Au and Pb+Pb collision at AGS--SPS energies. The influence of the switch time from transport to hydro models, the viscous parameter, and freeze-out time are discussed. Since the applicability of the Israel-Stewart hydrodynamics assumes the perturbative character of the viscous stress tensor, $π^{μν}$, which should not exceed the ideal energy-momentum tensor, $T_{\rm id}^{μν}$, hydrodynamical codes usually rescale the shear stress tensor if the inequality $\|π^{μν}\|\ll \|T_{\rm id}^{μν}\|$ is not fulfilled in some sense. We show that the form of the corresponding condition plays an important role in the sensitivity of hydrodynamic calculations to the viscous parameter -- a ratio of the shear viscosity to the entropy density, $η/s$. It is shown that the constraints used in the vHLLE and MUSIC models give the same results for the observables. With these constraints, the rapidity distributions and transverse momentum spectra are most sensitive to a change of the $η/s$ ratio. As an alternative, a strict condition is used. We performed global fits the rapidity and transverse mass distribution of pion and protons. It was also found that $η/s$ as a function of the collision energy monotonically increases from $E_{\rm lab}=6A$GeV up to $E_{\rm lab}=40A$GeV and saturates for higher SPS energies. We observe that it is difficult to reproduce simultaneously pion and proton rapidity distribution within our model with the present choice of the equation of state without a phase transition.

Constraints on shear stress tensor in viscous relativistic hydrodynamics

We extend our hybrid model HydHSD by taking into account shear viscosity within the Israel-Stewart hydrodynamics. The influence of different forms of $π^{μν}$ constraints on observables is analyzed. We show that the form of the corresponding condition plays an important role for the sensitivity of viscous hydrodynamics to the ratio of shear viscosity to the entropy density, $η/s$. It is shown that the constraint used in the vHLLE model, results in most sensitivity of rapidity distributions and transverse momentum spectra to a change of the $η/s$ ratio; however, their applicability for large values of $η/s$ is doubtful. On the contrary, the strict constraints from \cite{MNR2010} are very strong but most established. We also found that $η/s$ as a function of the collision energy probably has an extremum at $E_{\rm lab}=10.7$ AGeV. However, we obtain that any considered condition does not allow to reproduce simultaneously pion and proton experimental data within our model.

Charge and isospin fluctuations in a non-ideal pion gas with dynamically fixed particle number

We study the behavior of the non-ideal pion gas with the dynamically fixed number of particles, formed on an intermediate stage in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The pion spectrum is calculated within the self-consistent Hartree approximation. General expressions are derived for cross-covariances of the number of various particle species in the pion gas of an arbitrary isospin composition. The behavior of the cross-variances is analyzed for the temperature approaching from above the maximal critical temperature of the Bose-Einstein condensation for the pion species $a=\pm,0$, i.e. for $T>\max T_{\rm cr}^a$. It is shown that in case of the system with equal averaged numbers of isospin species, the variance of the charge, $Q=N_{+}-N_{-}$, diverges at $T\to T_{\rm cr}=T_{\rm cr}^a$, whereas variances of the total particle number, $N=N_{+} + N_{-} + N_{0}$, and of a relative abundance of charged and neutral pions, $G=(N_{+}+N_{-})/2 - N_{0}$, remain finite in the critical point. Then fluctuations are studied in the pion gas with small isospin imbalance $0<|G|\ll N$ and $0<|Q|\ll N$\, and shifts of the effective masses, chemical potentials and values of critical temperatures are calculated for various pion species, and the highest critical temperature, $\mbox{max}T_{\rm cr}^{a}$ is found, above which the pion system exists in the non-condensed phase. Various pion cross variances are calculated for $T>\mbox{max}T_{\rm cr}^{a}$, which prove to be strongly dependent on the isospin composition of the system, whereas the variances of $N$ and $G$ are found to be independent on the isospin imbalance up to the term linear in $G/N$ and $Q/N$.

Vorticity and hyperon polarization at NICA energies

We study the formation of fluid vorticity and the hyperon polarization in heavy-ion collisions at NICA energies in the framework of the Parton-Hadron-String Dynamic Model, taking into account both hadronic and quark-gluonic (partonic) degrees of freedom. The vorticity properties in peripheral Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$7.7\,GeV are demonstrated and confronted with other models. The obtained result for the $Λ$ polarization is in agreement with the experimental data by the STAR collaboration, whereas the model is not able to explain the observed high values of the anti-hyperon $\barΛ$ polarization.

Charged $ρ$-meson condensation in neutron stars

We extend relativistic mean-field models with hadron masses and meson-baryon coupling constants dependent on the scalar field $σ$, including hyperons and $Δ(1232)$ baryons, to incorporate a possibility of the charged $ρ$ meson condensation in neutron star matter. The influence of the $ρ^-$ condensation on the equation of state proves to be strongly model dependent. In our models of one type (KVORcut-based ones) the $ρ^-$ condensation arises by a second-order phase transition above a critical density and the maximum value of the neutron star mass diminishes only slightly. The matter composition changes more significantly. In our models of other type (MKVOR*-based ones), if the system is considered at fixed density, the $ρ^-$ condensation arises by a second-order phase transition at the baryon density $n=n_{c,ρ}^{(\rm II)}$ and at a slightly higher density $n=n_{c,ρ}^{(\rm I)}$ there occurs a first-order phase transition. In a neutron star matter starting with a density $n<n_{c,ρ}^{(\rm II)}$ there appears a region of a mixed phase, or the system is described by Maxwell construction, that results in a substantial decrease of the value of the maximum neutron star mass. Nevertheless in the models under consideration the observational constraint on the maximum neutron star mass is fulfilled. Besides, in MKVOR*-based models the appearance of the $ρ^-$ condensate is accompanied by a strong rearrangement of the matter composition. Dependence of the results on a choice of the $ρ$ meson scaling functions for the effective $ρ$ meson mass and coupling constants is also investigated.

Fluctuations in non-ideal pion gas with dynamically fixed particle number

We consider a non-ideal hot pion gas with the dynamically fixed number of particles in the model with the $λϕ^4$ interaction. The effective Lagrangian for the description of such a system is obtained after dropping the terms responsible for the change of the total particle number. Reactions $π^+π^-\leftrightarrowπ^0π^0$, which determine the isospin balance of the medium, are permitted. Within the self-consistent Hartree approximation we compute the effective pion mass, thermodynamic characteristics of the system and the variance of the particle number at temperatures above the critical point of the induced Bose-Einstein condensation when the pion chemical potential reaches the value of the effective pion mass. We analyze conditions for the condensate formation in the process of thermalization of an initially non-equilibrium pion gas. The normalized variance of the particle number increases with a temperature decrease but remains finite in the critical point of the Bose-Einstein condensation. This is due to the non-perturbative account of the interaction and is in contrast to the ideal-gas case. In the kinetic regime of the condensate formation the variance is shown to stay finite also.

Scalar quanta in Fermi liquids: zero sounds, instabilities, Bose condensation, and a metastable state in dilute nuclear matter

Spectrum of bosonic scalar-mode excitations in a normal Fermi liquid with a local scalar interaction is investigated for various values and momentum dependence of the scalar Landau parameter $f_0$ in the particle-hole channel. For $f_0 >0$ the conditions are found when the phase velocity on the spectrum of the zero sound acquires a minimum at a non-zero momentum. For $-1 0$. We also argue that in peripheral heavy-ion collisions the Pomeranchuk instability may occur already for $f_0 >-1$.

Condensate of excitations in moving superfluids

A possibility of the condensation of excitations with a non-zero momentum in rectilinearly moving and rotating superfluid bosonic and fermionic (with Cooper pairing) media is considered in terms of a phenomenological order-parameter functional at zero and non-zero temperature. The results might be applicable to the description of bosonic systems like superfluid $^4$He, ultracold atomic Bose gases, charged pion and kaon condensates in rotating neutron stars, and various superconducting fermionic systems with pairing, like proton and color-superconducting components in compact stars, metallic superconductors, and neutral fermionic systems with pairing, like the neutron component in compact stars and ultracold atomic Fermi gases. Order parameters of the "mother" condensate in the superfluid and the new condensate of excitations, corresponding energy gains, critical temperatures and critical velocities are found.

The effect of inclusion of $Δ$ resonances in relativistic mean-field model with scaled hadron masses and coupling constants

Knowledge of the equation of state of the baryon matter plays a decisive role in the description of neutron stars. With an increase of the baryon density the filling of Fermi seas of hyperons and $Δ$ isobars becomes possible. Their inclusion into standard relativistic mean-field models results in a strong softening of the equation of state and a lowering of the maximum neutron star mass below the measured values. We extend a relativistic mean-field model with scaled hadron masses and coupling constants developed in our previous works and take into account now not only hyperons but also the $Δ$ isobars. We analyze available empirical information to put constraints on coupling constants of $Δ$s to mesonic mean fields. We show that the resulting equation of state satisfies majority of presently known experimental constraints.

Delta isobars in relativistic mean-field models with $σ$-scaled hadron masses and couplings

We extend the relativistic mean-field models with hadron masses and meson-baryon coupling constants dependent on the scalar $σ$ field, studied previously to incorporate $Δ(1232)$ baryons. Available empirical information is analyzed to put constraints on the couplings of $Δ$s with meson fields. Conditions for the appearance of $Δ$s are studied. We demonstrate that with inclusion of the $Δ$s our equations of state continue to fulfill majority of known empirical constraints including the pressure-density constraint from heavy-ion collisions, the constraint on the maximum mass of the neutron stars, the direct Urca and the gravitational-baryon mass ratio constraints.

Directed flow in asymmetric nucleus-nucleus collisions and the inverse Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal effect

It is proposed to identify a strong electric field - created during relativistic collisions of asymmetric nuclei - via the observation of pseudorapidity and transverse momentum distributions of hadrons with the same mass but opposite charge. The results of detailed calculations within the Parton-Hadron String Dynamics (PHSD) approach for the charge-dependent directed flow $v_1$ are presented for semi-central Cu+Au collision at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV incorporating the inverse Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal (iLPM) effect, which accounts for a delay in the electromagnetic interaction with the charged degree of freedom. Including the iLPM effect we achieve a reasonable agreement of the PHSD results for the charge splitting in $v_1(p_T)$ in line with the recent measurements of the STAR Collaboration for Cu+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV while an instant appearance and coupling of electric charges at the hard collision vertex overestimates the splitting by about a factor of 10. We predict that the iLPM effect should practically disappear at energies of $\sqrt{s_{NN}} \approx$9 GeV, which should lead to a significantly larger charge splitting of $v_1$ at the future FAIR/NICA facilities.

Relativistic Mean-Field Models with Scaled Hadron Masses and Couplings: Hyperons and Maximum Neutron Star Mass

An equation of state of cold nuclear matter with an arbitrary isotopic composition is studied within a relativistic mean-field approach with hadron masses and coupling constants depending self-consistently on the scalar mean-field. All hadron masses decrease universally with the scalar field growth, whereas meson-nucleon coupling constants can vary differently. More specifically we focus on two modifications of the KVOR model studied previously. One extension of the model (KVORcut) demonstrates that the equation of state stiffens if the increase of the scalar-field magnitude with the density is bounded from above at some value for baryon densities above the saturation nuclear density. This can be realized if the nucleon vector-meson coupling constant changes rapidly as a function of the scalar field slightly above the desired value. The other version of the model (MKVOR) utilizes a smaller value of the nucleon effective mass at the nuclear saturation density and a saturation of the scalar field in the isospin asymmetric matter induced by a strong variation of the nucleon isovector-meson coupling constant as function of the scalar field. A possibility of hyperonization of the matter in neutron star interiors is incorporated. Our equations of state fulfill majority of known empirical constraints including the pressure-density constraint from heavy-ion collisions, direct Urca constraint, gravitational-baryon mass constraint for the pulsar J0737-3039B, and the constraint on the maximum mass of the neutron stars.

Making a soft relativistic mean-field equation of state stiffer at high density

We study relativistic mean-field (RMF) models including nucleons interacting with scalar, vector and iso-vector mean fields and self- and cross- mean-field interaction terms. Usually, in such a models the magnitude of the scalar field increases monotonically with the nucleon density, and the nucleon effective mass decreases. We demonstrate that the latter quantity stops to decrease and the equation of state stiffens, provided the mean-field self-interaction potential rises sharply in a narrow vicinity of the values of mean fields corresponding to nucleon densities $n> n_{*}>n_0$, where $n_0$ is the nuclear saturation density. As the result the limiting neutron star mass increases. This procedure offers a simple way to stiffen the equation of state at densities above $n_{*}$ without altering it at densities $n\le n_{0}$. The developed scheme allows an application to neutron stars of the RMF models, which are well fitted to finite nuclei but do not fulfill the experimental constraint on the limiting neutron star mass. The exemplary application of the method to the well-known FSUGold model allows us to increase the limiting neutron star mass from $1.72~M_\odot$ to $M \geq 2.01~M_\odot$.
