Constraints on the high-density nuclear equation of state from the phenomenology of compact stars and heavy-ion collisions

A new scheme for testing nuclear matter equations of state (EsoS) at high densities using constraints from neutron star phenomenology and a flow data analysis of heavy-ion collisions is suggested. An acceptable EoS shall not allow the direct Urca process to occur in neutron stars with masses below $1.5~M_{\odot}$, and also shall not contradict flow and kaon production data of heavy-ion collisions. Compact star constraints include the mass measurements of 2.1 +/- 0.2 M_sun (1 sigma level) for PSR J0751+1807, of 2.0 +/- 0.1 M_sun from the innermost stable circular orbit for 4U 1636-536, the baryon mass - gravitational mass relationships from Pulsar B in J0737-3039 and the mass-radius relationships from quasiperiodic brightness oscillations in 4U 0614+09 and from the thermal emission of RX J1856-3754. This scheme is applied to a set of relativistic EsoS constrained otherwise from nuclear matter saturation properties with the result that no EoS can satisfy all constraints simultaneously, but those with density-dependent masses and coupling constants appear most promising.

Lattice QCD Constraints on Hybrid and Quark Stars

A QCD-motivated dynamical-quasiparticle model with parameters adjusted to reproduce the lattice-QCD equation of state is extrapolated from region of high temperatures and moderate baryonic densities to the domain of high baryonic densities and zero temperature. The resulting equation of state matched with realistic hadronic equations of state predicts a phase transition into the quark phase at higher densities than those reachable in neutron star interiors. This excludes the possibility of the existence of hybrid (hadron-quark) stars. Pure quark stars are possible and have low masses, small radii and very high central densities. Similar results are obtained for a simple bag model with massive quarks, fitted to reproduce the same lattice results. Self-bound quark matter is also excluded within these models. Uncertainties in the present extrapolation re discussed. Comparison with standard bag models is made.

Multi-channel scattering and Feshbach resonances: Effective theory, phenomenology, and many-body effects

A low energy effective theory based on a microscopic multi-channel description of the atom-atom interaction is derived for the scattering of alkali atoms in different hyperfine states. This theory describes all scattering properties, including medium effects, in terms of the singlet and triplet scattering lengths and the range of the atom-atom potential and provides a link between a microscopic description of Feshbach scattering and more phenomenological approaches. It permits the calculation of medium effects on the resonance coming from the occupation of closed channel states. The examination of such effects are demonstrated to be of particular relevance to an experimentally important Feshbach resonance for $^{40}$K atoms. We analyze a recent rethermalization rate experiment on $^{40}$K and demonstrate that a measurement of the temperature dependence of this rate can determine the magnetic moment of the Feshbach molecule. Finally, the energy dependence of the Feshbach interaction is shown to introduce a negative effective range inversely proportional to the width of the resonance. Since our theory is based on a microscopic multi-channel picture, it allows the explicit calculation of corrections to commonly used approximations such as the neglect of the effective range and the treatment of the Feshbach molecule as a point boson.

Transport Theories for Heavy Ion Collisions in the 1 AGeV Regime

We compare multiplicities as well as rapidity and transverse momentum distributions of protons, pions and kaons calculated within presently available transport approaches for heavy ion collisions around 1 AGeV. For this purpose, three reactions have been selected: Au+Au at 1 and 1.48 AGeV and Ni+Ni at 1.93 AGeV.

Baryon resonances from chiral coupled-channel dynamics

We discuss the formation of s- and d-wave baryon resonances as predicted by the chiral SU(3) symmetry of QCD. Based on the leading order term of the chiral Lagrangian a rich spectrum of molecules is generated, owing to final-state interactions. The spectrum of s- and d-wave baryon states with zero and non-zero charm is remarkably consistent with the empirical pattern. In particular, the recently announced Sigma_c(2800) of the BELLE collaboration is reproduced with realistic mass and width parameters. Similarly, the d-wave states Lambda_c(2625) and Xi_c(2815) are explained naturally to be chiral excitations of J^P=3/2^+ states. In the open-charm sector exotic multiplet structures are predicted. These findings support a radical conjecture: meson and baryon resonances that do not belong to the large-N_c ground state of QCD should be viewed as hadronic molecular states

Relativistic Mean-Field Models with Effective Hadron Masses and Coupling Constants, and rho^- Condensation

We study relativistic mean-field models with hadron masses and coupling constants depending self-consistently on a scalar meson field. We demonstrate that by the field redefinition some models can be equivalently transformed into each other. Thereby the large variety of scaling functions for masses and couplings can be reduced to a restricted set of functions with a constrained dependence on a scalar field. We show how by choosing properly the latter scaling functions one may stiffen or soften the equation of state at high densities and simultaneously increase the threshold density for the direct Urca process without any change of the description of nuclear matter close to the saturation density. The stiffening of the equation of state might be motivated by recent neutron star mass measurements, whereas the increase of the threshold density for the direct Urca process is required by the analysis of neutron star cooling data. We demonstrate that if a rho meson is included in a mean-field model as a non-Abelian gauge boson, then there is a possibility for a charged rho-meson condensation in dense nuclear matter. We show that such a novel phase can be realized in neutron star interiors already for sufficiently low densities, typically $\sim 3÷4 n_0$, where $n_0$ is the nuclear saturation density. In the framework of the relativistic mean field model the new phase arises in a second-order phase transition. The appearance of a $ρ^-$ condensate significantly alters the proton fraction in a neutron star but changes moderately the equation of state. The neutrino emissivity of the processes involving a $ρ^-$ meson condensate is estimated.

Chiral dynamics for exotic open-charm resonances

We review the open-charm spectrum of chiral excitations in QCD. At leading order in a chiral expansion a parameter-free prediction is obtained for the coupled-channel scattering of Goldstone bosons off open-charm mesons and baryons with 0^-,1^- and {1/2}^+ quantum numbers. The recently announced narrow D_s(2317) and $D_s(2463)$ mesons observed by the BABAR and CLEO collaborations are reproduced. Also the baryon states Λ_{c}(2593), Λ_{c}(2880) and Ξ_{c}(2790) discovered earlier by the CLEO collaboration are recovered naturally. Besides describing resonances with conventional quantum numbers additional multiplets with members that carry exotic quantum numbers are predicted. In particular, so far unobserved narrow isospin-singlet open-charm mesons with negative strangeness are generated dynamically. Similarly, narrow isospin-doublet open-charm baryons with positive strangeness are suggested.

Chiral symmetry, strangeness and resonances

We review the important role played by the chiral SU(3) symmetry in predicting the properties of antikaons and hyperon resonances in cold nuclear matter. Objects of crucial importance are the meson-baryon scattering amplitudes obtained within the chiral coupled-channel effective field theory. The formation of baryon resonances as implied by chiral coupled-channel dynamics is discussed. Results for antikaon and hyperon-resonance spectral functions are presented for isospin symmetric and asymmetric matter.

Chiral symmetry and resonances in QCD

We study the formation of resonances in terms of the chiral SU(3) Lagrangian. At leading order parameter-free predictions are obtained for the scattering of Goldstone bosons off any hadron once we insist on approximate crossing symmetry of the unitarized scattering amplitude. A wealth of empirically established resonances are recovered and so far unseen resonances are predicted. Here we review in some detail the properties of light axial-vector mesons.

Quark-mass dependence of baryon resonances

We study the quark-mass dependence of J^P = \frac12^- s-wave and J^P = \frac32^- d-wave baryon resonances. Parameter-free results are obtained in terms of the leading order chiral Lagrangian. In the 'heavy' SU(3) limit with m_π=m_K \simeq 500 MeV the s-wave resonances turn into bound states forming two octets plus a singlet representations of the SU(3) group. Similarly the d-wave resonances turn into bound states forming an octet and a decuplet in this limit. A contrasted result is obtained in the 'light' SU(3) limit with m_π=m_K \simeq 140 MeV for which no resonances exist.

On meson resonances and chiral symmetry

We study meson resonances with quantum numbers J^P=1^+ in terms of the chiral SU(3) Lagrangian. At leading order a parameter-free prediction is obtained for the scattering of Goldstone bosons off vector mesons with J^P=1^- once we insist on approximate crossing symmetry of the unitarized scattering amplitude. A resonance spectrum arises that is remarkably close to the empirical pattern. In particular, we find that the strangeness-zero resonances h_1(1380), f_(1285) and b_1(1235) are formed due to strong K \bar K_μand \bar K K_μchannels. This leads to large coupling constants of those resonances to the latter states.

Charmed meson resonances from chiral coupled-channel dynamics

Charmed meson resonances with quantum numbers J^P=0^+ and J^P=1^+ are generated in terms of chiral coupled-channel dynamics. At leading order in the chiral expansion a parameter-free prediction is obtained for the scattering of Goldstone bosons off charmed pseudo-scalar and vector mesons. The recently announced narrow open charm states observed by the BABAR and CLEO collaborations are reproduced. We suggest the existence of states that form an anti-triplet and a sextet representation of the SU(3) group. In particular, so far unobserved narrow isospin-singlet states with negative strangeness are predicted.

On charm baryon resonances and chiral symmetry

We study heavy-light baryon resonances with quantum numbers J^P=1/2^- in terms of the non-linear chiral SU(3) Lagrangian. Within the chi-BS(3) approach a parameter-free leading order prediction is obtained for the scattering of Goldstone bosons off heavy-light baryon resonances with J^P=1/2^+. The three states Lambda_{c1}(2593), Lambda_{c0}(2880) and Xi_{c1}(2790) discovered by the CLEO collaboration are recovered. We suggest the existence of resonance states that form an anti-quindecimplet, two sextet and two anti-triplet representations of the SU(3) group. In particular, narrow states with anomalous isospin (I) and strangeness (S) quantum numbers (I,S)=(1/2,+1) are anticipated.

On heavy-light meson resonances and chiral symmetry

We study heavy-light meson resonances with quantum numbers J^P=0^+ and J^P=1^+ in terms of the non-linear chiral SU(3) Lagrangian. At leading order a parameter-free prediction is obtained for the scattering of Goldstone bosons off heavy-light pseudo-scalar and vector mesons once we insist on approximate crossing symmetry of the unitarized scattering amplitude. The recently announced narrow open charm states observed by the BABAR and CLEO collaborations are reproduced. We suggest the existence of states that form an anti-triplet and a sextet representation of the SU(3) group. In particular, so far unobserved narrow isospin-singlet states with negative strangeness (I,S)=(0,-1) are predicted at 2361 MeV J^P=0^+ and 2501 MeV (J^P=1^+). Similarly, open bottom states are found at 5719 MeV (J^P=0^+) and 5622 MeV (J^P=1^+). Additional narrow states of mass 5580 MeV (J^P=0^+) and 5650 MeV (J^P=1^+) with widths of about 50 MeV are obtained in the (I,S)=(1,1) sector. For the anti-triplet states our results differ most significantly from predictions that are based on a linear realization of the chiral SU(3) symmetry in the open bottom sector. Strongly bound 0^+-and 1^+-states with (I,S)=(0,1) at 5507 MeV and 5553 MeV are predicted.

On baryon resonances and chiral symmetry

We study J^P=(3/2)^- baryon resonances as generated by chiral coupled-channel dynamics. Parameter free results are obtained in terms of the Weinberg-Tomozawa term predicting the leading s-wave interaction strength of Goldstone bosons with baryon-decuplet states. In the 'heavy' SU(3) limit with m_π= m_K \sim 500 MeV the resonances turn into bound states forming a decuplet and octet representation of the SU(3) group. Using physical masses the mass splitting are remarkably close to the empirical pattern.

Chiral dynamics and pionic 1s states of Pb and Sn isotopes

We calculate shifts and width of 1s and 2p states of pions bound to heavy nuclei, using an optical potential with its s-wave interaction part based on chiral symmetry. This potential is constructed systematically in two-loop approximation of chiral perturbation theory. A proper treatment of the explicit energy dependence of this potential in conjunction with gauge invariance turns out to be very important. Results are reported for deeply bound pionic states in Pb and Sn isotopes in comparison with the GSI data

Negative Kaons in Dense Baryonic Matter

Kaon polarization operator in dense baryonic matter of arbitrary isotopic composition is calculated including s- and p-wave kaon-baryon interactions. The regular part of the polarization operator is extracted from the realistic kaon-nucleon interaction based on the chiral and 1/N_c expansion. Contributions of the Lambda(1116), Sigma(1195), Sigma*(1385) resonances are taken explicitly into account in the pole and regular terms with inclusion of mean-field potentials. The baryon-baryon correlations are incorporated and fluctuation contributions are estimated. Results are applied for K- in neutron star matter. Within our model a second-order phase transition to the s-wave K- condensate state occurs at $rho_c \gsim 4 ρ_0$ once the baryon-baryon correlations are included. We show that the second-order phase transition to the p-wave $K^-$ condensate state may occur at densities $ρ_c \sim 3÷5 ρ_0$ in dependence on the parameter choice. We demonstrate that a first-order phase transition to a proton-enriched (approximately isospin-symmetric) nucleon matter with a p-wave K- condensate can occur at smaller densities, $ρ\lsim 2 ρ_0$. The transition is accompanied by the suppression of hyperon concentrations.

Resonance states below pion-nucleon threshold and their consequences for nuclear systems

Regular sequences of narrow peaks have been observed in the missing mass spectra in the reactions pp --> p pi^+ X and pd --> ppX_1 below pion-production threshold. They are interpreted in the literature as manifestations of supernarrow light dibaryons, or nucleon resonances, or light pions forming resonance states with the nucleon in its ground state. We discuss how existence of such exotic states would affect properties of nuclear systems. We show that the neutron star structure is drastically changed in all three cases. We find that in the presence of dibaryons or nucleon resonances the maximal possible mass of a neutron star would be smaller than the observational limit. Presence of light pions does not contradict the observed neutron star masses. Light pions allow for the existence of extended nuclear objects of arbitrary size, bound by strong and electromagnetic forces.
