Self-consistent calculations of quadrupole moments of spherical nuclei

The self-consistent Theory of Finite Fermi Systems based on the Energy Density Functional by Fayans et al. with the set DF3-a of parameters fixed previously is used to calculate three kinds of quadrupole moments. At first, we examined systematically quadrupole moments of odd neighbors of semi-magic lead and tin isotopes and $N=50,N=82$ isotones. Second, we found quadrupole moments of the first $2^+$ states in the same two chains of isotopes. Finally, we evaluated quadrupole moments of odd-odd nuclei neighboring to double magic ones. Reasonable agreement with available experimental data has been obtained. Predictions are made for quadrupole moments of nuclei in the vicinity of unstable magic nuclei

An ab initio theory of double odd-even mass differences in nuclei

Two aspects of the problem of evaluating double odd-even mass differences D_2 in semi-magic nuclei are studied related to existence of two components with different properties, a superfluid nuclear subsystem and a non-superfluid one. For the superfluid subsystem, the difference D_2 is approximately equal to 2Δ, the gap Δbeing the solution of the gap equation. For the non-superfluid subsystem, D_2 is found by solving the equation for two-particle Green function for normal systems. Both equations under consideration contain the same effective pairing interaction. For the latter, the semi-microscopic model is used in which the main term calculated from the first principles is supplemented with a small phenomenological addendum containing one phenomenological parameter supposed to be universal for all medium and heavy atomic nuclei.

The first quadrupole excitations in spherical nuclei and nuclear pairing

Excitation energies and transition probabilities of the first 2+ excitations in even lead, tin and nickel isotopes are calculated within the self-consistent Theory of Finite Fermi Systems based on the Energy Density Functional by Fayans et al. A reasonable agreement with available experimental data is obtained. The effect of the density dependence of the effective pairing interaction is analyzed in detail by comparing results obtained with volume and surface pairing. The effect is found to be noticeable, especially for the 2+ energies which are systematically higher at 200-300 keV for the volume paring as compared with the surface pairing case, the latter being in a better agreement with the data.

Quadrupole moments of spherical semi-magic nuclei within the self-consistent Theory of Finite Fermi Systems

The quadrupole moments of odd neighbors of semi-magic lead and tin isotopes and $N=50,N=82$ isotones are calculated within the self-consistent Theory of Finite Fermi Systems based on the Energy Density Functional by Fayans et al. Two sets of parameters, DF3 and DF3-a, fixed previously are used. They differ by the spin-orbit and effective tensor force parameters, the latter being significantly bigger in the DF3-a functional. Results for the two functionals turned out to be rather different. The functional DF3-a leads to quadrupole moments in reasonable agreement with the experimental ones for most nuclei examined.

Effects of density dependence of the effective pairing interaction on the first $2^+$ excitations and quadrupole moments of odd nuclei

Excitation energies and transition probabilities of the first $2^+$ excitations in even tin and lead isotopes as well as the quadrupole moments of odd neighbors of these isotopes are calculated within the self-consistent Theory of Finite Fermi Systems based on the Energy Density Functional by Fayans et al. The effect of the density dependence of the effective pairing interaction is analyzed in detail by comparing results obtained with volume and surface pairing. The effect is found to be noticeable. For example, the $2^+$-energies are systematically higher at 200-300 keV for the volume paring as compared with the surface pairing case. But on the average both models reasonably agree with the data. Quadrupole moments of odd-neutron nuclei are very sensitive to the single-particle energy of the state $λ$ under consideration due to the Bogolyubov factor ($u^2_λ-v^2_λ$). A reasonable agreement with experiment for the quadrupole moments has been obtained for the most part of odd nuclei considered. The method used gives a reliable possibility to predict quadrupole moments of unstable odd nuclei including very neutron rich ones.

Semi-microscopic model of pairing in nuclei

A semi-microscopic model for nucleon pairing in nuclei is presented starting from the ab intio BCS gap equation with Argonne v18 force and the self-consistent Energy Density Functional Method basis characterized with the bare nucleon mass. The BCS theory is formulated in terms of the model space S0 with the effective pairing interaction calculated from the first principles in the subsidiary space S0. This effective interaction is supplemented with a small phenomenological addendum containing one phenomenological parameter universal for all medium and heavy atomic nuclei. We consider the latter as a phenomenological way to take into account both the many-body corrections to the BCS theory and the effective mass effects. For protons, the Coulomb interaction is introduced directly. Calculations made for several isotopic and isotonic chains of semi-magic nuclei confirm the validity of the model. The role of the self-consistent basis is stressed.

On limits of ab initio calculations of pairing gap in nuclei

A brief review of recent microscopic calculations of nuclear pairing gap is given. A semi-microscopic model is suggested in which the ab-initio effective pairing interaction is supplemented with a small phenomenological addendum. It involves a parameter which is universal for all medium and heavy nuclei. Calculations for several isotopic and isotonic chains of semi-magic nuclei confirm the relevance of the model.

Microscopic evaluation of the pairing gap

We discuss the relevant progress that has been made in the last few years on the microscopic theory of the pairing correlation in nuclei and the open problems that still must be solved in order to reach a satisfactory description and understanding of the nuclear pairing. The similarities and differences with the nuclear matter case are emphasized and described by few illustrative examples. The comparison of calculations of different groups on the same set of nuclei show, besides agreements, also discrepancies that remain to be clarified. The role of the many-body correlations, like screening, that go beyond the BCS scheme, is still uncertain and requires further investigation.

Spatial correlation properties of the anomalous density matrix in a slab of nuclear matter with realistic NN-forces

Spatial correlation characteristics of the anomalous density matrix $κ$ in a slab of nuclear matter with the Paris and Argonne v18 forces are calculated. A detailed comparison with predictions of the effective Gogny force is made. It is found that the two realistic forces lead to very close results which are qualitatively similar to those for the Gogny force. At the same time, the magnitude of $κ$ for realistic forces is essentially smaller than the one for the Gogny force. The correlation characteristics are practically independent of the magnitude of $κ$ and turn out to be quite close for the three kinds of the force. In particular, all of them predict a small value of the local correlation length at the surface of the slab and a big one, inside. These results are in agreement with those obtained recently by Pillet at al. for finite nuclei with the Gogny force.

Magnetic moments of long isotopic chains

Dipole magnetic moments of several long isotopic chains are analyzed within the self-consistent Finite Fermi System theory based on the Generalized Energy Density Functional method with exact account for the pairing and quasi-particle continuum. New data for nuclei far from the beta-stability valley are included in the analysis. For a number of semi-magic isotopes of the tin and lead chains a good description of the data is obtained, with accuracy of 0.1 - 0.2 mu_N. A chain of non-magic isotopes of copper is also analyzed in detail. It is found that the systematic analysis of magnetic moments of this long chain yields rich information on the evolution of the nuclear structure of the Cu isotopes. In particular, it may give a signal of deformation for the ground state of some nuclei in the chain.

Interaction of the single-particle and collective degrees of freedom in non-magic nuclei: the role of phonon tadpole terms

A method of a consistent consideration of the phonon contributions to mass and gap operators in non-magic nuclei is developed in the so-called g^2 approximation, where g is the low-lying phonon creation amplitude. It includes simultaneous accounting for both the usual non-local terms and the phonon tadpole ones. The relations which allow the tadpoles to be calculated without any new parameters are derived. As an application of the results, the role of the phonon tadpoles in the single-particle strength distribution and in the single-particle energies and gap values has been considered. Relation to the problem of the surface nature of pairing is discussed.

Upper edge of the neutron star crust : the drip point and around

A semi-microscopic self-consistent quantum approach developed recently to describe the inner crust structure of neutron stars within the Wigner-Seitz method with the explicit inclusion of neutron and proton pairing correlations is used for finding the neutron drip point which separates the outer and inner crusts. The equilibrium configurations of the crust are examined in vicinity of the drip point and in the upper part of the inner crust, for the density region corresponding to average Fermi momenta $k_{\rm F}{=}0.2 ÷0.5 $fm$^{-1}$.

A realistic model of superfluidity in the neutron star inner crust

A semi-microscopic self-consistent quantum approach developed recently to describe the inner crust structure of neutron stars within the Wigner-Seitz (WS) method with the explicit inclusion of neutron and proton pairing correlations is further developed. In this approach, the generalized energy functional is used which contains the anomalous term describing the pairing. It is constructed by matching the realistic phenomenological functional by Fayans et al. for describing the nuclear-type cluster in the center of the WS cell with the one calculated microscopically for neutron matter. Previously the anomalous part of the latter was calculated within the BCS approximation. In this work corrections to the BCS theory which are known from the many-body theory of pairing in neutron matter are included into the energy functional in an approximate way. These modifications have a sizable influence on the equilibrium configuration of the inner crust, i.e. on the proton charge Z and the radius R_c of the WS cell. The effects are quite significant in the region where the neutron pairing gap is larger.

Role of the boundary conditions in the Wigner-Seitz approximation applied to the neutron star inner crust

The influence of the boundary conditions used in the Wigner-Seitz (WS) approximation applied to the neutron star inner crust is examined. The generalized energy functional method which includes the neutron and proton pairing correlations is used. Predictions of two versions of the boundary conditions are compared with each other. The uncertainties in the equilibrium configuration (Z,R_c) of the crust, where Z is the proton charge and R_c, the radius of the WS cell, correspond to variation of Z by 2 - 6 units and of R_c, by 1 - 2 fm. The effect of the boundary conditions is enhanced at increasing density. These uncertainties are smaller than the variation of Z and R_c coming from the pairing effects. In the case of high densities, k_F greater than 1 1/fm, the most important uncertainty occurs in the value of the neutron gap. In the WS approximation, it originates from the shell effect in the neutron single-particle spectrum which is rather pronounced in the case of larger k_F and, correspondingly, small R_c values, but it becomes negligible at lower density near the drip point. An approximate recipe to avoid this uncertainty is suggested.

The value of the pairing gap itself, especially at high density, can depend on the boundary condition used.

Solution of the microscopic gap equation for a slab of nuclear matter with the Paris NN-potential

The gap equation in the $^1S_0$-channel is solved for a nuclear slab with the separable form of the Paris potential. The gap equation is considered in the model space in terms of the effective pairing interaction which is found in the complementary subspace. The absolute value of the gap $Δ$ turned out to be very sensitive to the cutoff $K_{max}$ in the momentum space in the equation for the effective interaction. It is necessary to take $K_{max}=160-180 fm^{-1}$ to guarantee 1% accuracy for $Δ$. The gap equation itself is solved directly, without any additional approximations. The solution reveals the surface enhancement of the gap $Δ$ which was earlier found with an approximate consideration. A strong surface-volume interplay was found also implying a kind of the proximity effect. The diagonal matrix elements of $Δ$ turned out to be rather close to the empirical values for heavy atomic nuclei.

Surface behaviour of the pairing gap in a slab of nuclear matter

The surface behaviour of the pairing gap previously studied for semi-infinite nuclear matter is analyzed in the slab geometry. The gap-shape function is calculated in two cases: (a) pairing with the Gogny force in a hard-wall potential and (b) pairing with the separable Paris interaction in a Saxon-Woods mean-field potential. It is shown that the surface features are preserved in the case of slab geometry, being almost independent of the width of the slab. It is also demonstrated that the surface enhancement is strengthened as the absolute value of chemical potential $|μ|$ decreases which simulates the approach to the nucleon drip line.
