Stationary vs. singular points in an accelerating FRW cosmology derived from six-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity

Six-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity (with a linear Gauss-Bonnet term) is investigated. This theory is inspired by basic features of results coming from string and M-theory. Dynamical compactification is carried out and it is seen that a four-dimensional accelerating FRW universe is recovered, when the two-dimensional internal space radius shrinks. A non-perturbative structure of the corresponding theory is identified which has either three or one stable fixed points, depending on the Gauss-Bonnet coupling being positive or negative. A much richer structure than in the case of the perturbative regime of the dynamical compactification recently studied by Andrew, Bolen, and Middleton is exhibited.

Electromagnetic Excitation of Rotating Black Holes and Relativistic Jets

We show that electromagnetic excitations of rotating black holes can lead to the appearance of narrow singular beams which break up the black hole horizon forming a tube-like region which connects the interior and exterior. It is argued that this effect may be at the origin of jet formation.

Observational constraints on dark energy with generalized equations of state

We investigate the effects of viscosity terms depending on the Hubble parameter and its derivatives in the dark energy equation of state. Such terms are possible if dark energy is a fictitious fluid originating from corrections to the Einstein general relativity as is the case for some braneworld inspired models or fourth order gravity. We consider two classes of models whose singularities in the early and late time universe have been studied by testing the models against the dimensionless coordinate distance to Type Ia Supernovae and radio-galaxies also including priors on the shift and the acoustic peak parameters. It turns out that both models are able to explain the observed cosmic speed up without the need of phantom (w < -1) dark energy.

Neutrino Propagation in a Strongly Magnetized Medium

We derive general expressions at the one-loop level for the coefficients of the covariant structure of the neutrino self-energy in the presence of a constant magnetic field. The neutrino energy spectrum and index of refraction are obtained for neutral and charged media in the strong-field limit ($M_{W}\gg \sqrt{B}\gg m_{e},T,μ,| \mathbf{p}| $) using the lowest Landau level approximation. The results found within the lowest Landau level approximation are numerically validated, summing in all Landau levels, for strong $B\gg T^{2}$ and weakly-strong $B \gtrsim T^{2}$ fields. The neutrino energy in leading order of the Fermi coupling constant is expressed as the sum of three terms: a kinetic-energy term, a term of interaction between the magnetic field and an induced neutrino magnetic moment, and a rest-energy term. The leading radiative correction to the kinetic-energy term depends linearly on the magnetic field strength and is independent of the chemical potential. The other two terms are only present in a charged medium. For strong and weakly-strong fields, it is found that the field-dependent correction to the neutrino energy in a neutral medium is much larger than the thermal one. Possible applications to cosmology and astrophysics are considered.

Multiplicative anomaly and zeta factorization

Some aspects of the multiplicative anomaly of zeta determinants are investigated. A rather simple approach is adopted and, in particular, the question of zeta function factorization, together with its possible relation with the multiplicative anomaly issue is discussed. We look primordially into the zeta functions instead of the determinants themselves, as was done in previous work. That provides a supplementary view, regarding the appearance of the multiplicative anomaly. Finally, we briefly discuss determinants of zeta functions that are not in the pseudodifferential operator framework.

On the issue of imposing boundary conditions on quantum fields

An interesting example of the deep interrelation between Physics and Mathematics is obtained when trying to impose mathematical boundary conditions on physical quantum fields. This procedure has recently been re-examined with care. Comments on that and previous analysis are here provided, together with considerations on the results of the purely mathematical zeta-function method, in an attempt at clarifying the issue. Hadamard regularization is invoked in order to fill the gap between the infinities appearing in the QFT renormalized results and the finite values obtained in the literature with other procedures.

Beyond-Constant-Mass-Approximation Magnetic Catalysis in the Gauge Higgs-Yukawa Model

Beyond-constant-mass approximation solutions for magnetically catalyzed fermion and scalar masses are found in a gauge Higgs-Yukawa theory in the presence of a constant magnetic field. The obtained fermion masses are several orders of magnitude larger than those found in the absence of Yukawa interactions. The masses obtained within the beyond-constant-mass approximation exactly reduce to the results within the constant-mass approach when the condition $ν\ln (\frac{1}{\hat{m}^{2}})\ll 1$ is satisfied. Possible applications to early universe physics and condensed matter are discussed.

Forms on Vector Bundles Over Hyperbolic Manifolds and the Conformal Anomaly

We study gauge theories based on abelian $p-$forms on real compact hyperbolic manifolds. An explicit formula for the conformal anomaly corresponding to skew--symmetric tensor fields is obtained, by using zeta--function regularization and the trace tensor kernel formula. Explicit exact and numerical values of the anomaly for $p-$forms of order up to $p=4$ in spaces of dimension up to $n=10$ are then calculated.

A note on the Casimir energy of a massive scalar field in positive curvature space

We re-evaluate the zero point Casimir energy for the case of a massive scalar field in $\mathbf{R}^{1}\times\mathbf{S}^{3}$ space, allowing also for deviations from the standard conformal value $ξ=1/6$, by means of zero temperature zeta function techniques. We show that for the problem at hand this approach is equivalent to the high temperature regularization of the vacuum energy, as conjectured in a previous publication. Two different, albeit equally valid, ways of doing the analytic continuation are described.

Entropy bounds for massive scalar field in positive curvature space

We consider a massive scalar field with arbitrary coupling in $\mathbf{S}^{1}\times \mathbf{S}^{3}$ space, which mimics the thermal expanding universe, and calculate explicitly all relevant thermodynamical functions in the low- and high-temperature regimes, extending previous analysis of entropy bounds and entropy/energy ratios performed in the conformal case. For high temperatures, new mass-dependent entropy ratios are established which, differently to the conformal limit, fulfil Bekenstein's and Verlinde's bounds in the physical region.

Confined quantum fields under the influence of a uniform magnetic field

We investigate the influence of a uniform magnetic field on the zero-point energy of charged fields of two types, namely, a massive charged scalar field under Dirichlet boundary conditions and a massive fermion field under MIT boundary conditions. For the first, exact results are obtained, in terms of exponentially convergent functions, and for the second, the limits for small and for large mass are analytically obtained too. Coincidence with previously known, partial result serves as a check of the procedure. For the general case in the second situation --a rather involved one-- a precise numerical analysis is performed.

The Casimir energy of a massive fermionic field confined in a d+1 dimensional slab-bag

We evaluate the fermionic Casimir effect associated with a massive fermion confined within a planar (d+1) dimensional slab-bag, on which MIT bag model boundary conditions of standard type, along a single spatial direction, are imposed. A simple and effective method for adding up the zero-point energy eigenvalues, corresponding to a quantum field under the influence of arbitrary boundary conditions, imposed on the field on flat surfaces perpendicular to a chosen spatial direction, is proposed. Using this procedure, an analytic result is obtained, from which small and large fermion mass limits, valid for an arbitrary number of dimensions, are derived. They match some known results in particular cases. The method can be easily extended to other configurations.

Neutrino Self-Energy and Index of Refraction in Strong Magnetic Field: A New Approach

The Ritus' $E_{p}$ eigenfunction method is extended to the case of spin-1 charged particles in a constant electromagnetic field and used to calculate the one-loop neutrino self-energy in the presence of a strong magnetic field. From the obtained self-energy, the neutrino dispersion relation and index of refraction in the magnetized vacuum are determined within the field range $m_{e}^{2}\ll eB\ll M_{W}^{2}$. The propagation of neutrinos in the magnetized vacuum is anisotropic due to the dependence of the index of refraction on the angle between the directions of the neutrino momentum and the external field. Possible cosmological implications of the results are discussed.

Heat kernel-zeta function relationship coming from the classical moment problem

By using ideas and strong results borrowed from the classical moment problem, we show how -under very general conditions- a discrete number of values of the spectral zeta function (associated generically with a non-decreasing sequence of numbers, and not necessarily with an operator) yields all the moments corresponding to the density of states, as well as those of the partition function of the sequence (the two basic quantities that are always considered in a quantum mechanical context). This goes beyond the well known expression of the small-t asymptotic expansion of the heat kernel of an operator in terms of zeta function values. The precise result for a given situation depends dramatically on the singularity structure of the zeta function. The different specific situations that can appear are discussed in detail, using seminal results from the zeta function literature. Attention is paid to formulations involving zeta functions with a non-standard pole structure (as those arising in noncommutative theories and others). Finally, some misuses of the classical moment problem are pointed out.

On recent strategies proposed for proving the Riemann hypothesis

We comment on some apparently weak points in the novel strategies recently developed by various authors aiming at a proof of the Riemann hypothesis. After noting the existence of relevant previous papers where similar tools have been used, we refine some of these strategies. It is not clear at the moment if the problems we point out here can be resolved rigorously, and thus a proof of the RH be obtained, along the lines proposed. However, a specific suggestion of a procedure to overcome the encountered difficulties is made, what constitutes a step towards this goal.
