Bandwidth-limited and noisy pulse sequences for single qubit operations in semiconductor spin qubits

Spin qubits are very valuable and scalable candidates in the area of quantum computation and simulation applications. In the last decades, they have been deeply investigated from a theoretical point of view and realized on the scale of few devices in the laboratories. In semiconductors, spin qubits can be built confining the spin of electrons in electrostatically defined quantum dots. Through this approach it is possible to create different implementations: single electron spin qubit, singlet-triplet spin qubit, or a three electrons architecture, e. g. the hybrid qubit. For each qubit type, we study the single qubit rotations along the principal axis of Bloch sphere including the mandatory non-idealities of the control signals that realize the gate operations. The realistic transient of the control signal pulses are obtained by adopting an appropriate low-pass filter function. In addition the effect of disturbances on the input signals is taken into account by using a Gaussian noise model.

Phonon-induced relaxation and decoherence times of the hybrid qubit in silicon quantum dots

We study theoretically the phonon-induced relaxation and decoherence processes in the hybrid qubit in silicon. Hybrid qubit behaves as a charge qubit when the detuning is close to zero and as spin qubit for large detuning values. It is realized starting from an electrostatically defined double quantum dot where three electrons are confined and manipulated through only electrical tuning. By employing a three-level effective model for the qubit and describing the environment bath as a series of harmonic oscillators in the thermal equilibrium states, we extract the relaxation and decoherence times as a function of the bath spectral density and of the bath temperature using the Bloch-Redfield theory. For Si quantum dots the energy dispersion is strongly affected by the physics of the valley, i.e. the conduction band minima, so we also included the contribution of the valley excitations in our analysis. Our results offer fundamental information on the system decoherence properties when the unavoidable interaction with the environment is included and temperature effects are considered.

Gate fidelity comparison in semiconducting spin qubit implementations affected by control noises

A comparison of gate fidelities between different spin qubit types defined in quantum dots and a donor under different control errors is reported. We studied five qubit types, namely the quantum dot spin qubit, the double quantum dot singlet-triplet qubit, the double quantum dot hybrid qubit, the donor qubit and the quantum dot spin-donor qubit. For each one, we derived analytical time sequences that realize single qubit rotations along the principal axis of the Bloch sphere. We estimated the effects of control errors on the gate fidelity by using a Gaussian noise model. Then we compared the gate fidelities among qubit implementations due to pulse timing errors by using a realistic set of values for the error parameters of control amplitudes.

Coherence time analysis in semiconducting hybrid qubit under realistic experimental conditions

The unavoidable effect of the environmental noise due to nuclear spins and charge traps is included in the study of the hybrid qubit dynamics. Hybrid qubit dues its name to the advantageous combination of manipulation speed of a charge qubit with the longevity of a spin qubit. It consists of three electrons confined through external gate voltages in a double quantum dot and deserves special interest in quantum computation applications due to its advantages in terms of fabrication, control and only electrical manipulation. Hybrid qubit is protected against global magnetic fluctuations since it is a decoherence-free subspace qubit. It is only affected by local fluctuations, such as the Overhauser field, in addition to charge fluctuations on the electrostatic gates. In the configuration studied, the control parameters, that are the gate voltages, are always turned on. Coherence time of the hybrid qubit is extracted when model parameters take values achievable experimentally in the nuclear free isotope $^{28}$Si, natural Si and GaAs hosts.

Semiconducting double-dot exchange-only qubit dynamics in presence of magnetic and charge noises

The effects of magnetic and charge noises on the dynamical evolution of the double-dot exchange-only qubit (DEOQ) is theoretically investigated. The DEOQ consisting of three electrons arranged in an electrostatically defined double quantum dot deserves special interest in quantum computation applications due to its advantages in terms of fabrication, control and manipulation in view of implementation of fast single and two qubit operations through only electrical tuning. The presence of the environmental noise due to nuclear spins and charge traps, in addition to fluctuations in the applied magnetic field and charge fluctuations on the electrostatic gates adopted to confine the electrons, is taken into account including random magnetic field and random coupling terms in the Hamiltonian. The behavior of the return probability as a function of time for initial conditions of interest is presented. Moreover, through an envelope-fitting procedure on the return probabilities, coherence times are extracted when model parameters take values achievable experimentally in semiconducting devices.

Controlled-NOT gate sequences for mixed spin qubit architectures in a noisy environment

Explicit controlled-NOT gate sequences between two qubits of different types are presented in view of applications for large-scale quantum computation. Here, the building blocks for such composite systems are qubits based on the electrostatically confined electronic spin in semiconductor quantum dots. For each system the effective Hamiltonian models expressed by only exchange interactions between pair of electrons are exploited in two different geometrical configurations. A numerical genetic algorithm that takes into account the realistic physical parameters involved is adopted. Gate operations are addressed by modulating the tunneling barriers and the energy offsets between different couple of quantum dots. Gate infidelities are calculated considering limitations due to unideal control of gate sequence pulses, hyperfine interaction and charge noise.

Effective Hamiltonian for two interacting double-dot exchange-only qubits and their controlled-NOT operations

Double-dot exchange-only qubit represents a promising compromise between high speed and simple fabrication in solid-state implementations. A couple of interacting double-dot exchange-only qubits, each composed by three electrons distributed in a double quantum dot, is exploited to realize controlled-NOT (CNOT) operations. The effective Hamiltonian model of the composite system is expressed by only exchange interactions between pairs of spins. Consequently, the evolution operator has a simple form and represents the starting point for the research of sequences of operations that realize CNOT gates. Two different geometrical configurations of the pair are considered, and a numerical mixed simplex and genetic algorithm is used. We compare the nonphysical case in which all the interactions are controllable from the external and the realistic condition in which intra-dot interactions are fixed by the geometry of the system. In the latter case, we find the CNOT sequences for both the geometrical configurations and we considered a qubit system where electrons are electrostatically confined in two quantum dots in a silicon nanowire. The effects of the geometrical sizes of the nanowire and of the gates on the fundamental parameters controlling the qubit are studied by exploiting a spin-density-functional theory-based simulator. Consequently, CNOT gate performances are evaluated.

Coherent Tunneling by Adiabatic Passage of an exchange-only spin qubit in a double quantum dot chain

A scheme based on Coherent Tunneling by Adiabatic Passage (CTAP) of exchange-only spin qubit quantum states in a linearly arranged double quantum dot chain is demonstrated. Logical states for the qubit are defined by adopting the spin state of three electrons confined in a double quantum dot. The possibility to obtain gate operations entirely with electrical manipulations makes this qubit a valuable architecture in the field of quantum computing for the implementation of quantum algorithms. The effect of the external control parameters as well as the effect of the dephasing on the coherent tunneling in the chain is studied. During adiabatic transport, within a constant energy degenerate eigenspace, the states in the double quantum dots internal to the chain are not populated, while transient populations of the mixed states in the external ones are predicted.

Effective Hamiltonian for the hybrid double quantum dot qubit

Quantum dot hybrid qubits formed from three electrons in double quantum dots represent a promising compromise between high speed and simple fabrication for solid state implementations of single qubit and two qubits quantum logic ports. We derive the Schrieffer-Wolff effective Hamiltonian that describes in a simple and intuitive way the qubit by combining a Hubbard-like model with a projector operator method. As a result, the Hubbard-like Hamiltonian is transformed in an equivalent expression in terms of the exchange coupling interactions between pairs of electrons. The effective Hamiltonian is exploited to derive the dynamical behaviour of the system and its eigenstates on the Bloch sphere to generate qubits operation for quantum logic ports. A realistic implementation in silicon and the coupling of the qubit with a detector are discussed.

Entanglement sudden death and sudden birth in two uncoupled spins

We investigate the entanglement evolution of two qubits interacting with a common environment trough an Heisenberg XX mechanism. We reveal the possibility of realizing the phenomenon of entanglement sudden death as well as the entanglement sudden birth acting on the environment. Such analysis is of maximal interest at the light of the large applications that spin systems have in quantum information theory.

Non-Markovian dissipative dynamics of two coupled qubits in independent reservoirs: a comparison between exact solutions and master equation approaches

The reduced dynamics of two interacting qubits coupled to two independent bosonic baths is investigated. The one-excitation dynamics is derived and compared with that based on the resolution of appropriate non-Markovian master equations. The Nakajima-Zwanzig and the time-convolutionless projection operator techniques are exploited to provide a description of the non-Markovian features of the dynamics of the two-qubits system. The validity of such approximate methods and their range of validity in correspondence to different choices of the parameters describing the system are brought to light.

Exact dynamics of XX central spin models

The dynamical behavior of a star network of spins, wherein each of N decoupled spins interact with a central spin through non uniform Heisenberg XX interaction is exactly studied. The time-dependent Schrodinger equation of the spin system model is solved starting from an arbitrary initial state. The resulting solution is analyzed and briefly discussed.

Non-Markovian dynamics of a single electron spin coupled to a nuclear spin bath

We apply the time-convolutionless (TCL) projection operator technique to the model of a central spin which is coupled to a spin bath via nonuniform Heisenberg interaction. The second-order results of the TCL method for the coherences and populations of the central spin are determined analytically and compared with numerical simulations of the full von Neumann equation of the total system. The TCL approach is found to yield an excellent approximation in the strong field regime for the description of both the short-time dynamics and the long time behavior.

W-like states of N uncoupled spins 1/2

The exact dynamics of a disordered spin star system, describing a central spin coupled to N distinguishable and non interacting spins 1/2, is reported. Exploiting their interaction with the central single spin system, we present possible conditional schemes for the generation of W-like states, as well as of well-defined angular momentum states, of the N uncoupled spins. We provide in addition a way to estimate the coupling intensity between each of the N spins and the central one. Finally the feasibility of our procedure is briefly discussed.

A criterion for entanglement in two two-level systems

We prove a necessary and sufficient condition for the occurrence of entanglement in two two-level systems, simple enough to be of experimental interest. Our results are illustrated in the context of a spin star system analyzing the exact entanglement evolution of the central couple of spins.
