Gamma Factory at CERN -- novel research tools made of light

We discuss the possibility of creating novel research tools by producing and storing highly relativistic beams of highly ionised atoms in the CERN accelerator complex, and by exciting their atomic degrees of freedom with lasers to produce high-energy photon beams. Intensity of such photon beams would be by several orders of magnitude higher than offered by the presently operating light sources, in the particularly interesting gamma-ray energy domain of 0.1-400 MeV. In this energy range, the high-intensity photon beams can be used to produce secondary beams of polarised electrons, polarised positrons, polarised muons, neutrinos, neutrons and radioactive ions. New research opportunities in a wide domain of fundamental and applied physics can be opened by the Gamma Factory scientific programme based on the above primary and secondary beams.

Design study of compact Laser-Electron X-ray Generator for material and life science applications

X-Ray generations utilizing Thomson scattering fill in the gap that exists between conventional and synchrotron-based X-ray sources. They are expected to be more intense than X-ray tubes and more compact, accessible and less expensive than synchrotron. In this work, two operation modes of Thomson X-ray source are documented: quasi CW(QCW) and a pulsed one are considered for material sciences and medical applications being implemented currently at Synchrotron Radiation (SR) facilities.

Optical stochastic cooling method in application to the beams of charged particles

We discuss the optical stochastic cooling (OSC) method in applications to the beams of charged particles, circulating in accelerators and storage rings. In this publication we concentrated on various OSC schemes in a diluted beam approximation, when the heating of selected particle by its neighboring ones could be neglected. Even so, this approximation allows us to identify important features in the beam cooling. In the forthcoming publication, on the basis of approach developed here, we will include effects of heating in the dynamics of cooling.

Fast Laser Cooling of Long Lived Ion Beams

Some peculiarities of fast laser cooling of long-lived ion beams in storage rings are discussed. Selective interaction of ions and broadband laser beam with sharp frequency and geometric edges is used while laser and ion beams are partially overlapped. The rates of change of the ion beam density in different regions of the phase space and at different moments of time in this scheme of cooling differ. That is why the generalized Robinson theorem valid for the infinitesimal phase space regions of non exponential cooling in turn is used to interpret the results.

Light Sources Based on Relativistic Ion Beams

Possible parameters of Light Sources (LS) based on Backward Rayleigh Scattering (BRS) of laser photons on relativistic ion beams in storage rings are discussed. It was shown that the parameters of the LS based on the RHIC storage ring (dedicated to High Energy Physics now) satisfy the requirements of the 2d generation LS. Using the ordinary or enhanced radiative cooling of ion beams in storage rings by broad-band lasers will permit to decrease essentially their emittance, dimensions, angular and energy spreads and convert them to the next generation of LS.

One way to Lorentz's Transformations

There are many papers devoted to derivation of Lorentz Transformations (LT). Many people have pro posed alternative derivations. Their analysis allows looking at LT and their consequences from different standpoints. At the same time it is important to choose the simplest and general way of derivation of LT for textbooks, to make them more accessible to a wide circle of laymen interested in the elativistic physics and to leave the W.Voight's, J.Larmor's, G.Lorentz's, A.Einstein's and other derivations for the history. A short, clear and simple derivation of generalized LT based on the Principle of Relativity and unknown dependence of the clocks tick rate (time dilation) on their velocity is presented in this paper.

Coherent Radiation in Insertion Devices-II

We represent results of calculations of coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR) of the relativistic bunch in an undulator with a vacuum chamber of arbitrary cross section with a new algorithm. This algorithm associated with direct calculations of electric field rather than the vector potential. CSR normalized to the incoherent one and compared with analytical calculations for a free space.

Self-Stimulated Undulator Klystron

The Self Stimulated Undulator Klystron (SSUK) and its possible applications in the Particle Accelerator Physics, incoherent Self-Stimulated Undulator Radiation Sources (SSUR) and Free-Electron Lasers (FEL) are discussed.

Coherent Radiation in Insertion Devices

We calculate the coherent radiation in an undulator/wiggler with a vacuum chamber of arbitrary cross section. The backward radiation is a coherent and it has wavelengths about twice the period of the undulator/wiggler. Mostly of coherent radiation is going with the wavelengths approximately the bunch length at small angles however.

TBA Scheme with ION/Proton Driving Beam

We are considering a two-beam accelerator (TBA) scheme with ion or proton beam as a driver. By comparison of the proposed scheme and the one with electron driver, we concluded, that TBA with ion/proton driver beam looks preferable. Existence of big proton accelerators in a few laboratories gives a boost for reconsideration of the baseline for post-LHC era. These Labs are FERMILAB, BNL, CERN and IHEP at Protvino, Moscow region. Protvino could emerge as one advantageous location and get stimulus for recovering the 600GeV-proton synchrotron in the existing~20km-long tunnel. This synchrotron was planned as a booster for 3x3TeV storage ring.

Self-stimulated Emission of Undulator Radiation

We attract attention that interaction of particle in downstream undulator with its own wavelet emitted in upstream undulator could be as strong as with the frictional field in undulator itself. This phenomenon could be used for enhancement of signal from pickup undulators in optical stochastic cooling methods as well as for increase of damping.

The evolution of the phase space density of particle beams in external fields

The evolution of the phase space density of particle beams in external fields is found proceeding from the continuity equation in the six-dimensional (6D) phase space (mu-space). The Robinson theorem, which includes the Liouville theorem as a special case, was proved in a more simple and consistent alternative way valid for arbitrary external fields, averaged fields of the beam (self-generated electro-magnetic fields except intrabeam scattering) and arbitrary frictional forces (linear, nonlinear). It includes particle accelerators as a special case. The limits of the applicability of the Robinson theorem in case of cooling of excited ions having a finite living time are presented.
