Analytical calculation of the spectrum of nonlinear Compton scattering beyond local approximations

We derive compact analytical formulae for the spectrum of nonlinear Compton scattering in a finite plane-wave pulse with a smooth temporal envelope. The strong-field QED probability is reduced to finite-pulse phase integrals, which are evaluated asymptotically for multicycle pulses with a broad class of smooth envelopes. We use the uniform approximation to remove the caustic divergences that appear at the nonlinear edges of broadened harmonics. Away from the caustics, it reduces to the standard saddle-point result. The behavior near the linear edge is further improved by an envelope-corrected saddle-point approximation. The approach retains the harmonic substructure in the spectral-angular region carrying the dominant part of the emitted radiation. The locally monochromatic approximation is recovered by averaging the finite-pulse interference. Within their asymptotic domain of applicability, the resulting formulae agree with direct numerical calculations and can be used to evaluate spectra from an electron beam.

Coherently enhanced radiation friction in laser-plasma collisions

We reconsider the footprints of radiation friction in a head-on collision of a bunch of relativistic charged particles with a laser pulse by demonstrating that forward and backward radiation and radiation friction are coherently enhanced in a dense bunch. This opens an avenue to observe radiation friction in laser-matter interactions at much lower energies and laser intensities than accepted ever previously. An estimate for the energy losses of the particles in the bunch over the collision due to coherent radiation friction in terms of laser and bunch parameters is derived and validated by comparing with the results of three dimensional particle-in-cell simulations.

Analytical theory of coherent radiation and radiation friction in laser-plasma collisions

We develop an analytical theory of coherent (scaled quadratically with the number of particles) radiation and coherent radiation friction in a head-on collision of a dense charged particle bunch with an intense laser pulse. We demonstrate that the low-frequency coherent radiation in the forward and backward directions dominates the energy-momentum losses of a mildly relativistic bunch and can result in a substantial enhancement of the overall radiation friction as compared to the incoherent case. We derive the scaling laws for the average momentum losses of the bunch over the collision with respect to laser intensity, pulse duration, and particle bunch parameters, and show their robustness with respect to laser polarization and the shape of the particle distribution in the bunch.

Strong-field ionization in particle-in-cell simulations

The inclusion of the process of multiple ionization of atoms in high-intensity electromagnetic fields into particle-in-cell (PIC) codes applied to the simulation of laser-plasma interactions is a challenging task. In this paper, we first revisit ionization rates as given by the Perelomov-Popov-Terent'yev formulas within the paradigm of sequential tunnel ionization. We analyze the limit of validity and possible inconsistencies of this approach. We show that a strongly limiting factor to a precise description of ionization is the competing contribution of different sequential ionization processes. To solve this an algorithm is proposed that allows to find the dominant nonsequential path of tunnel ionization, and significantly improves the precision in simulations. This novel procedure is implemented in the PIC code SMILE, and includes the dependence of the ionization rates on the magnetic quantum number of the level. The sensitivity to variations in the ionization model is studied via full simulations of the ionization of an argon target by an incident high-intensity laser pulse. Finally, we analyze generalizations of the Perelomov-Popov-Terent'yev rate developed to describe the barrier suppression ionization in high fields and discuss the necessity and possibility of including these extensions in PIC simulations.

Nonlinear Compton scattering in time-dependent electric fields: LCFA and beyond

Locally constant crossed field approximation (LCFA) is a powerful tool for theoretical and numerical studies of various strong field quantum electrodynamical effects. We explore this approximation in detail for photon emission by a spinless particle in a strong time-dependent electric field. This kind of electromagnetic fields is of particular interest, because, in contrast to the comprehensively studied case of a plane wave, they are not crossed. We develop an approach for calculating photon emission probability in a generic time-dependent electric field, establish the range of applicability of LCFA, and calculate the corrections to it.

Onset of electron-seeded cascades in generic electromagnetic fields

QED cascades in a strong electromagnetic field of optical range and arbitrary configuration are considered. A general expression for short-time dependence of the key electron quantum dynamical parameter is derived, allowing to generalize the effective threshold condition of QED cascade onset. The generalized theory is applied to selfsustained cascades in a single focused laser pulse. According to numerical simulations, if a GeV electron bunch is used as a seed, an ordinary cascade can be converted into the selfsustained one. As an application, it would be also possible to produce this way bright collimated photon beams with up to GeV photon energies.

Unusual face of radiation friction: enhancing production of longitudinal plasma waves

We study the penetration of ultraintense circularly polarized laser pulses into a thick subcritical plasma layer with accounting for radiation friction. We show that radiation pressure is enhanced by radiation friction in the direction transverse to the laser pulse propagation, and that for stronger and longer laser pulses this mechanism dominates over the ordinary ponderomotive pressure, thus resulting in a stronger charge separation than anticipated previously. We give estimates of the effect and compare them with the results of 1D and 2D PIC simulations.

Optimized multibeam configuration for observation of QED cascades

QED cascades in intense electromagnetic field can occur if the dynamical quantum parameter $χ$ of a seed electron, which in Compton units coincides with the electron proper acceleration, attains the order of unity. We derive general expression for $χ$ of an initially slow electron in an arbitrary electromagnetic field for a time range $t\ll 1/ω$, where $ω$ is the field carrier frequency. Using this formula, we consider a special field configuration of multiple colliding focused laser beams and optimize it to provide cascade development at laser power below $10$ PW and intensity of the order of $10^{23}$W/cm$^2$. Such parameters of the beams will be obtained with a new generation of laser facilities, particularly the ELI Beamlines, in the coming years.

Radiation friction vs ponderomotive effect

The concept of ponderomotive potential is upgraded to a regime in which radiation friction becomes dominant. The radiation friction manifests itself in novel features of long-term capturing of the particles released at the focus and impenetrability of the focus from the exterior. We apply time scales separation to the Landau-Lifshitz equation splitting the particle motion into quivering and slow drift of a guiding center. The drift equation is deduced by averaging over fast motion.

Boost modes for a massive fermion field

We have shown that Wightman function of a free quantum field generates any complete set of solutions of relativistic wave equations. Using this approach we have constructed the complete set of solutions to 2d Dirac equation consisting of eigenfunctions of the generator of Lorentz rotations (boost operator). It is shown that at the surface of the light cone the boost modes for a fermion field contain $δ$-function of a complex argument. Due to the presence of such singularity exclusion even of a single mode with an arbitrary value of the boost quantum number makes the set of boost modes incomplete.

On the kinetic equation approach to pair production by time-dependent electric field

We investigate the quantum kinetic approach to pair production from vacuum by time-dependent electric field. Equivalence between this approach and the more familiar S-matrix approach is explicitly established for both scalar and fermion cases. For the particular case of a constant electric field exact solution for kinetic equations is provided and the accuracy of low-density approximation is estimated.
