Separation equations for 2D superintegrable systems on constant curvature spaces

Second-order conformal quantum superintegrable systems in 2 dimensions are Laplace equations on a manifold with an added scalar potential and $3$ independent 2nd order conformal symmetry operators. They encode all the information about 2D Helmholtz or time-independent Schrödinger superintegrable systems in an efficient manner: Each of these systems admits a quadratic symmetry algebra (not usually a Lie algebra) and is multiseparable. We study the separation equations for the systems as a family rather than separate cases. We show that the separation equations comprise all of the various types of hypergeometric and Heun equations in full generality. In particular, they yield all of the 1D Schrödinger exactly solvable (ES) and quasi-exactly solvable (QES) systems related to the Heun operator. We focus on complex constant curvature spaces and show explicitly that there are 8 pairs of Laplace separation types and these types account for all separable coordinates on the 20 flat space and 9 2-sphere Helmholtz superintegrable systems, including those for the constant potential case. The different systems are related by Stäckel transforms, by the symmetry algebras and by Böcher contractions of the conformal algebra so(4,C) to itself, which enables all systems to be derived from a single one: the generic potential on the complex 2-sphere. This approach facilitates a unified view of special function theory, incorporating hypergeometric and Heun functions in full generality.

Extended Kepler-Coulomb quantum superintegrable systems in 3 dimensions

The quantum Kepler-Coulomb system in 3 dimensions is well known to be 2nd order superintegrable, with a symmetry algebra that closes polynomially under commutators. This polynomial closure is also typical for 2nd order superintegrable systems in 2D and for 2nd order systems in 3D with nondegenerate (4-parameter) potentials. However the degenerate 3-parameter potential for the 3D Kepler-Coulomb system (also 2nd order superintegrable) is an exception, as its symmetry algebra doesn't close polynomially. The 3D 4-parameter potential for the extended Kepler-Coulomb system is not even 2nd order superintegrable, but Verrier and Evans (2008) showed it was 4th order superintegrable, and Tanoudis and Daskaloyannis (2011) showed that, if a 2nd 4th order symmetry is added to the generators, the symmetry algebra closes polynomially. Here, based on the Tremblay, Turbiner and Winternitz construction, we consider an infinite class of quantum extended Kepler-Coulomb 3 and 4-parameter systems indexed by a pair of rational numbers (k_1,k_2) and reducing to the usual systems when k_1=k_2=1. We show these systems to be superintegrable of arbitrarily high order and determine the structure of their symmetry algebras. We demonstrate that the symmetry algebras close algebraically; only for systems admitting extra discrete symmetries is polynomial closure achieved. Underlying the structure theory is the existence of raising and lowering operators, not themselves symmetry operators or even defined independent of basis, that can be employed to construct the symmetry operators and their structure relations.

Superintegrability in a non-conformally-flat space

Superintegrable systems in two- and three-dimensional spaces of constant curvature have been extensively studied. From these, superintegrable systems in conformally flat spaces can be constructed by Staeckel transform. In this paper a method developed to establish the superintegrability of the Tremblay-Turbiner-Winternitz system in two dimensions is extended to higher dimensions and a superintegrable system on a non-conformally-flat four-dimensional space is found. In doing so, curvature corrections to the corresponding classical potential are found to be necessary. It is found that some subalgebras of the symmetry algebra close polynomially.

Structure results for higher order symmetry algebras of 2D classical superintegrable systems

Recently the authors and J.M. Kress presented a special function recurrence relation method to prove quantum superintegrability of an integrable 2D system that included explicit constructions of higher order symmetries and the structure relations for the closed algebra generated by these symmetries. We applied the method to 5 families of systems, each depending on a rational parameter k, including most notably the caged anisotropic oscillator, the Tremblay, Turbiner and Winternitz system and a deformed Kepler-Coulomb system. Here we work out the analogs of these constructions for all of the associated classical Hamiltonian systems, as well as for a family including the generic potential on the 2-sphere. We do not have a proof in every case that the generating symmetries are of lowest possible order, but we believe this to be so via an extension of our method.

Superintegrability and higher order constants for quantum systems

We refine a method for finding a canonical form for symmetry operators of arbitrary order for the Schroedinger eigenvalue equation on any 2D Riemannian manifold, real or complex, that admits a separation of variables in some orthogonal coordinate system. As examples we treat two potentials with parameter k (one of which is the Tremblay, Turbiner, and Winternitz system) that have been shown to be classically superintegrable for all rational numbers k. We apply the canonical operator method to give a constructive proof that each of these systems is also quantum superintegrable for all rational k. We also develop the classical analog of the quantum canonical form for a symmetry. It is clear that our methods will generalize to other Hamiltonian systems.

Families of classical subgroup separable superintegrable systems

We describe a method for determining a complete set of integrals for a classical Hamiltonian that separates in orthogonal subgroup coordinates. As examples, we use it to determine complete sets of integrals, polynomial in the momenta, for some families of generalized oscillator and Kepler-Coulomb systems, hence demonstrating their superintegrability. The latter generalizes recent results of Verrier and Evans, and Rodriguez, Tempesta and Winternitz. Another example is given of a superintegrable system on a non-conformally flat space.

Superintegrability and higher order constants for classical and quantum systems

We extend recent work by Tremblay, Turbiner, and Winternitz which analyzes an infinite family of solvable and integrable quantum systems in the plane, indexed by the positive parameter k. Key components of their analysis were to demonstrate that there are closed orbits in the corresponding classical system if k is rational, and for a number of examples there are generating quantum symmetries that are higher order differential operators than two. Indeed they conjectured that for a general class of potentials of this type, quantum constants of higher order should exist. We give credence to this conjecture by showing that for an even more general class of potentials in classical mechanics, there are higher order constants of the motion as polynomials in the momenta. Thus these systems are all superintegrable.

Laplace-type equations as conformal superintegrable systems

We lay out the foundations of the theory of second-order conformal superintegrable systems. Such systems are essentially Laplace equations on a manifold with an added potential: $(Δ_n+V({\bf x}))Ψ=0$. Distinct families of second-order superintegrable Schrödinger (or Helmholtz) systems $(Δ'_n+V'({\bf x}))Ψ=EΨ$ can be incorporated into a single Laplace equation. There is a deep connection between most of the special functions of mathematical physics, these Laplace conformally superintegrable systems and their conformal symmetry algebras. Using the theory of the Laplace systems, we show that the problem of classifying all 3D Helmholtz superintegrable systems with nondegenerate potentials, i.e., potentials with a maximal number of independent paprameters, can be reduced to the problem of classifying the orbits of the nonlinear action of the conformal group on a 10-dimensional manifold.

Coupling constant metamorphosis and Nth order symmetries in classical and quantum mechanics

We review the fundamentals of coupling constant metamorphosis (CCM) and the Stäckel transform, and apply them to map integrable and superintegrable systems of all orders into other such systems on different manifolds. In general, CCM does not preserve the order of constants of the motion or even take polynomials in the momenta to polynomials in the momenta. We study specializations of these actions which do preserve polynomials and also the structure of the symmetry algebras in both the classical and quantum cases. We give several examples of non-constant curvature 3rd and 4th order superintegrable systems in 2 space dimensions obtained via CCM, with some details on the structure of the symmetry algebras preserved by the transform action.

Nondegenerate 3D complex Euclidean superintegrable systems and algebraic varieties

A classical (or quantum) second order superintegrable system is an integrable n-dimensional Hamiltonian system with potential that admits 2n-1 functionally independent second order constants of the motion polynomial in the momenta, the maximum possible. Such systems have remarkable properties: multi-integrability and multi-separability, an algebra of higher order symmetries whose representation theory yields spectral information about the Schroedinger operator, deep connections with special functions and with QES systems. Here we announce a complete classification of nondegenerate (i.e., 4-parameter) potentials for complex Euclidean 3-space. We characterize the possible superintegrable systems as points on an algebraic variety in 10 variables subject to six quadratic polynomial constraints. The Euclidean group acts on the variety such that two points determine the same superintegrable system if and only if they lie on the same leaf of the foliation. There are exactly 10 nondegenerate potentials.

Subgroup type coordinates and the separation of variables in Hamilton-Jacobi and Schrődinger equations

Separable coordinate systems are introduced in the complex and real four-dimensional flat spaces. We use maximal Abelian subgroups to generate coordinate systems with a maximal number of ignorable variables. The results are presented (also graphically) in terms of subgroup chains. Finally, the explicit solutions of the Schrődinger equation in the separable coordinate systems are computed.

Exact and quasi-exact solvability of two-dimensional superintegrable quantum systems. I. Euclidean space

In this article we show that separation of variables for second-order superintegrable systems in two-dimensional Euclidean space generates both exactly solvable (ES) and quasi-exactly solvable (QES) problems in quantum mechanics. In this article we propose the another definition of ES and QES. The quantum mechanical problem is called ES if the solution of Schroedinger equation, can be expressed in terms of hypergeometrical functions $_mF_n$ and is QES if the Schroedinger equation admit polynomial solutions with the coefficients satisfying the three-term or more higher order of recurrence relations

Superintegrable Systems in Darboux spaces

Almost all research on superintegrable potentials concerns spaces of constant curvature. In this paper we find by exhaustive calculation, all superintegrable potentials in the four Darboux spaces of revolution that have at least two integrals of motion quadratic in the momenta, in addition to the Hamiltonian. These are two-dimensional spaces of nonconstant curvature. It turns out that all of these potentials are equivalent to superintegrable potentials in complex Euclidean 2-space or on the complex 2-sphere, via "coupling constant metamorphosis" (or equivalently, via Staeckel multiplier transformations). We present tables of the results.

The Coulomb-Oscillator Relation on n-Dimensional Spheres and Hyperboloids

In this paper we establish a relation between Coulomb and oscillator systems on $n$-dimensional spheres and hyperboloids for $n\geq 2$. We show that, as in Euclidean space, the quasiradial equation for the $n+1$ dimensional Coulomb problem coincides with the $2n$-dimensional quasiradial oscillator equation on spheres and hyperboloids. Using the solution of the Schrödinger equation for the oscillator system, we construct the energy spectrum and wave functions for the Coulomb problem.

Superintegrability in a two-dimensional space of non-constant curvature

A Hamiltonian with two degrees of freedom is said to be superintegrable if it admits three functionally independent integrals of the motion. This property has been extensively studied in the case of two-dimensional spaces of constant (possibly zero) curvature when all the independent integrals are either quadratic or linear in the canonical momenta. In this article the first steps are taken to solve the problem of superintegrability of this type on an arbitrary curved manifold in two dimensions. This is done by examining in detail one of the spaces of revolution found by G. Koenigs. We determine that there are essentially three distinct potentials which when added to the free Hamiltonian of this space have this type of superintegrability. Separation of variables for the associated Hamilton-Jacobi and Schroedinger equations is discussed. The classical and quantum quadratic algebras associated with each of these potentials are determined.

Completeness of superintegrability in two-dimensional constant curvature spaces

We classify the Hamiltonians $H=p_x^2+p_y^2+V(x,y)$ of all classical superintegrable systems in two dimensional complex Euclidean space with second-order constants of the motion. We similarly classify the superintegrable Hamiltonians $H=J_1^2+J_2^2+J_3^2+V(x,y,z)$ on the complex 2-sphere where $x^2+y^2+z^2=1$. This is achieved in all generality using properties of the complex Euclidean group and the complex orthogonal group.

Superintegrability on the two dimensional hyperboloid II

This work is devoted to the investigation of the quantum mechanical systems on the two dimensional hyperboloid which admit separation of variables in at least two coordinate systems. Here we consider two potentials introduced in a paper of C.P.Boyer, E.G.Kalnins and P.Winternitz, which haven't yet been studied. We give an example of an interbasis expansion and work out the structure of the quadratic algebra generated by the integrals of motion.
