A SUSY Inspired Simplified Model for the 750 GeV Diphoton Excess

The evidence for a new singlet scalar particle from the 750 GeV diphoton excess, and the absence of any other signal of new physics at the LHC so far, suggest the existence of new coloured scalars. To study this possibility, we propose a supersymmetry inspired simplified model, extending the Standard Model with a singlet scalar and with heavy scalar fields carrying both colour and electric charges -- the `squarks'. To allow the latter to decay, and to generate the dark matter of the Universe, we also add a neutral fermion to the particle content. We show that this model provides a two-parameter fit to the observed diphoton excess consistently with cosmology, while the allowed parameter space is bounded by the consistency of the model. In the context of our simplified model this implies the existence of other supersymmetric particles accessible at the LHC, rendering this scenario falsifiable. If this excess persists, it will imply a paradigm shift in assessing supersymmetry breaking and the role of scalars in low scale physics.

Implications of effective axial-vector coupling of gluon for $t\bar{t}$ spin polarizations at the LHC

We analyze the impact of effective axial-vector coupling of the gluon on spin polarization observables in $t\bar{t}$ pair production at the LHC. Working at leading order in QCD, we compute the $t\bar{t}$ spin-correlation and left-right spin asymmetry coefficients in the helicity basis in the laboratory frame as functions of the new physics scale $Λ$ associated with this coupling. We found that the $t\bar{t}$ invariant mass dependent asymmetries are more sensitive to the scale $Λ$ than the corresponding inclusive ones, in particular when suitable cuts selecting high $t\bar{t}$ invariant mass regions are imposed. In the context of this scenario, we show that the LHC has potential either to confirm or to rule out the Tevatron FB top asymmetry anomaly by analyzing the $t\bar{t}$ spin-correlation and left-right polarization asymmetries. On the other hand, stringent lower bound on the new physics scale $Λ$ can be set in this scenario if no significant deviations from the SM predictions for those observables will be measured.

A radiatively improved fermiophobic Higgs boson scenario

The naive fermiophobic scenario is unstable under radiative corrections, due to the chiral-symmetry breaking induced by fermion mass terms. In a recent study, the problem of including the radiative corrections has been tackled via an effective field theory approach. The renormalized Yukawa couplings are assumed to vanish at a high energy scale $Λ$, and their values at the electroweak scale are computed via modified Renormalization Group Equations. We show that, in case a fermiophobic Higgs scenario shows up at the LHC, a linear collider program will be needed to accurately measure the radiative Yukawa structure, and consequently constrain the $Λ$ scale.

Flavor Changing Fermion-Graviton Vertices

We study the flavor-changing quark-graviton vertex that is induced at the one-loop level when gravitational interactions are coupled to the standard model. Because of the conservation of the energy-momentum tensor the corresponding form factors turn out to be finite and gauge-invariant. Analytical expressions of the form factors are provided at leading order in the external masses. We show that flavor-changing interactions in gravity are local if the graviton is strictly massless while if the graviton has a small mass long-range interactions inducing a flavor-changing contribution in the Newton potential appear. Flavor-changing processes with massive spin-2 particles are also briefly discussed. These results can be generalized to the case of the lepton-graviton coupling.

Phenomenological viability of neutralino dark matter in the NMSSM

The viability of the lightest neutralino as a dark matter candidate in the Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model is analysed. We carry out a thorough analysis of the parameter space, taking into account accelerator constraints as well as bounds on low-energy observables, such as the muon anomalous magnetic moment and rare $K$ and $B$ meson decays. The neutralino relic density is also evaluated and consistency with present bounds imposed. Finally, the neutralino direct detection cross section is calculated in the allowed regions of the parameter space and compared to the sensitivities of present and projected dark matter experiments. Regions of the parameter space are found where experimental constraints are fulfilled, the lightest neutralino has the correct relic abundance and its detection cross section is within the reach of dark matter detectors. This is possible in the presence of very light singlet-like Higgses and when the neutralino is either light enough so that some annihilation channels are kinematically forbidden, or has a large singlino component.

Photon propagation in magnetic and electric fields with scalar/pseudoscalar couplings: a new look

We consider the minimal coupling of two photons to neutral scalar and pseudoscalar fields, as for instance in the case of the Higgs boson and axion, respectively. In this framework, we analyze the photon dispersion relations in the presence of static and homogeneous external magnetic and electric fields, by taking into account the contribution of the imaginary part of the scalar/pseudoscalar self-energy. We show that this contribution cannot be neglected when it is of the same order as the photon-scalar/pseudoscalar mixing term. In addition to the usual light-like photon propagation mode, with a refraction index n > 1, a massive mode with mass of the order of the coupled boson mass can be induced, provided that the external field is above a particular critical value. Depending on the values of the external field, photon energy, and mass of the scalar/pseudoscalar particle, the scalar/pseudoscalar width could induce a sizeable rate of photon splitting in two photons due to a strong resonant phenomenon. This effect has no practical laboratory applications for the Higgs physics due to the very large critical external magnetic or electric fields involved, for a photon energy of the order of a TeV. However, it can have relevant consequences in the axion physics or in any other scenario where light neutral scalar/pseudoscalar fields have minimal coupling with two photons.

Supersymmetric Models and CP violation in B decays

In this talk CP violation in the supersymmetric models, and especially in B-decays is discussed. We review our analysis of the supersymmetric contributions to the mixing CP asymmetries of $B\to ϕK_S$ and $B\to η^{\prime} K_S$ processes. Both gluino and chargino exchanges are considered in a model independent way by using the mass insertion approximation method. The QCD factorization method is used, and parametrization of this method in terms of Wilson coefficients is presented in both decay modes. Correlations between the CP asymmetries of these processes and the direct CP asymmetry in $b\to s γ$ decay are shown.

Comparative Study of CP Asymmetries in Supersymmetric Models

We systematically analyze the supersymmetric contributions to the mixing CP asymmetries and branching ratios of B -> Phi K(S) and B -> eta(prime) K(S) processes. We consider both gluino and chargino exchanges in a model independent way by using the mass insertion approximation method. While we adopt the QCD factorization approach for evaluating the corresponding hadronic matrix elements, a critical comparison with predictions in naive factorization one is also provided. We find that pure chargino contributions cannot accommodate the current experimental results on CP asymmetries, mainly due to b -> s gamma constraints. We show that charged Higgs contributions can relax these constraints making chargino responsible for large asymmetries. On the other hand, gluino exchanges can easily saturate both the constraints on B -> Phi K(S) and B -> eta(prime) K(S) CP asymmetries. Moreover, we also find that the simultaneous contributions from gluino and chargino exchanges could easily account for the present experimental results on the mentioned asymmetries. Remarkably, large experimentally allowed enhancements of B -> eta(prime) K(S) branching ratio can easily be achieved by the contribution of two mass insertions in gluino exchanges. Finally, we analyze the correlations between the CP asymmetries of these processes and the direct CP asymmetry in b -> s gamma decay. When all experimental constraints are satisfied, supersymmetry favors large and positive values of b -> s gamma asymmetry.

Neutralino-Nucleon Cross Section and Charge and Colour Breaking Constraints

We compute the neutralino-nucleon cross section in several supersymmetric scenarios, taking into account all kind of constraints. In particular, the constraints that the absence of dangerous charge and colour breaking minima imposes on the parameter space are studied in detail. In addition, the most recent experimental constraints, such as the lower bound on the Higgs mass, the $b\to sγ$ branching ratio, and the muon $g-2$ are considered. The astrophysical bounds on the dark matter density are also imposed on the theoretical computation of the relic neutralino density, assuming thermal production. This computation is relevant for the theoretical analysis of the direct detection of dark matter in current experiments. We consider first the supergravity scenario with universal soft terms and GUT scale. In this scenario the charge and colour breaking constraints turn out to be quite important, and $\tanβ\lsim 20$ is forbidden. Larger values of $\tanβ$ can also be forbidden, depending on the value of the trilinear parameter $A$. Finally, we study supergravity scenarios with an intermediate scale, and also with non-universal scalar and gaugino masses where the cross section can be very large.

Chargino contributions to the CP asymmetry in B -> Phi K(S) decay

We perform a model independent analysis of the chargino contributions to the CP asymmetry in B -> Phi K(S) process. We use the mass insertion approximation method generalized by including the possibility of a light right-stop. We find that the dominant effect is given by the contributions of the mass insertions deltaU_LL(32) and deltaU_RL(32) to the Wilson coefficient of the chromomagnetic operator. By considering both these contributions simultaneously, the CP asymmetry in B -> Phi K(S) process is significantly reduced and negative values, which are within the 1-sigma experimental range and satisfy the b -> s gamma constraints, can be obtained.

Constraining supersymmetric models from B_d - B-bar_d mixing and the B_d --> J/psi K_S asymmetry

We analyze the chargino contributions to B_d - B-bar_d mixing and CP asymmetry of the B_d --> J/psi K_S decay, in the framework of the mass insertion approximation. We derive model independent bounds on the relevant mass insertions. Moreover, we study these contributions in supersymmetric models with minimal flavor violation, Hermitian flavor structure, and small CP violating phases and universal strength Yukawa couplings. We show that in supersymmetric models with large flavor mixing, the observed values of sin(2 beta) may be entirely due to the chargino-up-squark loops.

Gravitational decays of heavy particles in large extra dimensions

In the framework of quantum gravity propagating in large extra dimensions, we analyze the inclusive radiative emission of Kaluza-Klein spin-2 gravitons in the two-fermions decays of massive gauge bosons, heavy quarks, Higgs bosons, and in the two-massive gauge bosons decay of Higgs bosons. We provide analytical expressions for the square modulus of amplitudes summed over polarizations, and numerical results for the widths and branching ratios. The corresponding decays in the Z, top quark, and Higgs boson sectors of the standard model are analyzed in the light of present and future experiments.

Experimental Constraints on the Neutralino-Nucleon Cross Section

In the light of recent experimental results for the direct detection of dark matter, we analyze in the framework of SUGRA the value of the neutralino-nucleon cross section. We study how this value is modified when the usual assumptions of universal soft terms and GUT scale are relaxed. In particular we consider scenarios with non-universal scalar and gaugino masses and scenarios with intermediate unification scale. We also study superstring constructions with D-branes, where a combination of the above two scenarios arises naturally. In the analysis we take into account the most recent experimental constraints, such as the lower bound on the Higgs mass, the $b\to sγ$ branching ratio, and the muon $g-2$.

On the B -> X_s l^+ l^- decays in general supersymmetric models

We analyze the inclusive semileptonic decays B -> X_s l^+ l^- in the framework of the supersymmetric standard model with non-universal soft-breaking terms at GUT scale. We show that the general trend of universal and non-universal models is a decreasing of branching ratio (BR) and increasing of energy asymmetry (AS). However, only non--universal models can have chances to get very large enhancements in BR and AS, corresponding to large (negative) SUSY contributions to the b -> s γamplitude.

Determination of the String Scale in D-Brane Scenarios and Dark Matter Implications

We analyze different phenomenological aspects of D-brane constructions. First, we obtain that scenarios with the gauge group and particle content of the supersymmetric standard model lead naturally to intermediate values for the string scale, in order to reproduce the value of gauge couplings deduced from experiments. Second, the soft terms, which turn out to be generically non universal, and Yukawa couplings of these scenarios are studied in detail. Finally, using these soft terms and the string scale as the initial scale for their running, we compute the neutralino-nucleon cross section. In particular we find regions in the parameter space of D-brane scenarios with cross sections in the range of $10^{-6}$--$10^{-5}$ pb, i.e. where current dark matter experiments are sensitive. For instance, this can be obtained for $\tanβ> 5$.

Muon anomalous magnetic moment in supersymmetric scenarios with an intermediate scale and nonuniversality

We analyze the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon (a_μ) in supersymmetric scenarios. First we concentrate on scenarios with universal soft terms. We find that a moderate increase of a_μ can be obtained by lowering the unification scale M_{GUT} to intermediate values 10^{10-12} GeV. However, large values of \tan βare still favored. Then we study the case of non-universal soft terms. For the usual value M_{GUT}~10^{16} GeV, we obtain a_μ in the favored experimental range even for moderate \tan βregions \tanβ~ 5$. Finally, we give an explicit example of these scenarios. In particular, we show that in a D-brane model, where the string scale is naturally of order 10^{10-12} GeV and the soft terms are non universal, a_μ is enhanced with low \tanβ.
