Snowmass 2021/22 Letter of Interest: A Forward Calorimeter at the LHC

A forward electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeter (FoCal) was proposed as an upgrade to the ALICE experiment, to be installed during LS3 for data-taking in 2027--2029 at the LHC. The FoCal extends the scope of ALICE, which was designed for the comprehensive study of hot and dense partonic matter, by adding new capabilities to explore the small-$x$ parton structure of nucleons and nuclei. The primary objective of the FoCal is high-precision inclusive measurement of direct photons and jets, as well as coincident gamma-jet and jet-jet measurements, in pp and p--Pb collisions. These measurements by FoCal constitute an essential part of a comprehensive small-$x$ program at the LHC down to $x\sim10^{-6}$ and over a large range of $Q^2$ with a broad array of complementary probes, comprising -- in addition to the photon measurements by FoCal and LHCb -- Drell-Yan and open charm measurements planned by LHCb, as well as photon-induced reactions performed by all LHC experiments.

Beam-Energy and System-Size Dependence of Dynamical Net Charge Fluctuations

We present measurements of net charge fluctuations in $Au + Au$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = $ 19.6, 62.4, 130, and 200 GeV, $Cu + Cu$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = $ 62.4, 200 GeV, and $p + p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = $ 200 GeV using the dynamical net charge fluctuations measure $ν_{+-{\rm,dyn}}$. We observe that the dynamical fluctuations are non-zero at all energies and exhibit a modest dependence on beam energy. A weak system size dependence is also observed. We examine the collision centrality dependence of the net charge fluctuations and find that dynamical net charge fluctuations violate $1/N_{ch}$ scaling, but display approximate $1/N_{part}$ scaling. We also study the azimuthal and rapidity dependence of the net charge correlation strength and observe strong dependence on the azimuthal angular range and pseudorapidity widths integrated to measure the correlation.

Production of phi Mesons in Au+Au Collisions at 11.7 A GeV/c

We report on a measurement of phi-meson production in Au+Au collisions at a beam momentum of 11.7 A GeV/c by Experiment E917 at the AGS. The measurement covers the midrapidity region 1.2 < y < 1.6. Transverse-mass spectra and the rapidity distribution are presented as functions of centrality characterized by the number of participant projectile nucleons. The yield of phi's per participant projectile nucleon increases strongly in central collisions in a manner similar to that observed for kaons.

Baryon Rapidity Loss in Relativistic Au+Au Collisions

An excitation function of proton rapidity distributions for different centralities is reported from AGS Experiment E917 for Au+Au collisions at 6, 8, and 10.8 GeV/nucleon. The rapidity distributions from peripheral collisions have a valley at midrapidity which smoothly change to distributions that peak at midrapidity for central collisions. The mean rapidity loss increases with increasing beam energy, whereas the fraction of protons consistent with isotropic emission from a thermal source at midrapidity decreases with increasing beam energy.

Antilambda production in Au+Au collisions at 11.7 A GeV/c

We present results from Experiment E917 for antilambda and antiproton production in Au+Au collisions at 11.7 A GeV. We have measured invariant spectra and yields for both species in central and peripheral collisions. We find that the antilambda/antiproton ratio near mid-rapidity increases from 0.26+0.19-0.15 in peripheral collisions to 3.6+4.7-1.8 in central collisions, a value that is substantially larger than current theoretical estimates.
