Effective density dependent pairing forces in the T=1 and T=0 channels

Effective density dependent pairing forces of zero range are adjusted on gap values in T=0,1 channels calculated with the Paris force in symmetric nuclear matter. General discussions on the pairing force are presented. In conjunction with the effective k-mass the nuclear pairing force seems to need very little renormalization in the T=1 channel. The situation in the T=0 channel is also discussed.

Phase equivalent potentials for three-body halos

We compare the properties of three-body systems obtained with two-body potentials with Pauli forbidden states and with the corresponding phase equivalent two-body potentials. In the first case the forbidden states are explicitly excluded in the calculation. Differences arise due to the off-shell properties of these on-shell equivalent potentials. We use the adiabatic hyperspherical method to formulate a practical prescription to exclude Pauli forbidden states in three-body calculations. Schematic as well as realistic potentials are used. Almost indistinguishable results are obtained.

Electron scattering on two-neutron halo nuclei: The case of $^6$He

The formalism to describe electron scattering reactions on two-neutron halo nuclei is developed. The halo nucleus is described as a three-body system (core+n+n), and the wave function is obtained by solving the Faddeev equations in coordinate space. We discuss elastic and quasielastic scattering using the impulse approximation to describe the reaction mechanism. We apply the method to investigate the case of electron scattering on $^6$He. Spectral functions, response functions, and differential cross sections are calculated for both neutron knockout and $α$ knockout by the electron.

Breakup Reactions of 11Li within a Three-Body Model

We use a three-body model to investigate breakup reactions of 11Li (n+n+9Li) on a light target. The interaction parameters are constrained by known properties of the two-body subsystems, the 11Li binding energy and fragmentation data. The remaining degrees of freedom are discussed. The projectile-target interactions are described by phenomenological optical potentials. The model predicts dependence on beam energy and target, differences between longitudinal and transverse momentum distributions and provides absolute values for all computed differential cross sections. We give an almost complete series of observables and compare with corresponding measurements. Remarkably good agreement is obtained. The relative neutron-9Li p-wave content is about 40%. A p-resonance, consistent with measurements at about 0.5 MeV of width about 0.4 MeV, seems to be necessary. The widths of the momentum distributions are insensitive to target and beam energy with a tendency to increase towards lower energies. The transverse momentum distributions are broader than the longitudinal due to the diffraction process. The absolute values of the cross sections follow the neutron-target cross sections and increase strongly for beam energies decreasing below 100 MeV/u.

Angular Correlations in Breakup of Three-Body Halo Nuclei

We use the three-body model and the sudden approximation to compute angular correlations in high-energy fragmentation reactions of two-neutron halos on light targets. The contribution from one-neutron absorption by far dominates over that of neutron scattering. We use 6He (n+n+alpha) and 11Li (n+n+9Li) as examples and study the dependence of the predictions of this model on different physical assumptions and parameters. Two-neutron removal reactions of 6He treated as a three-body halo

We formulate a method to compute breakup processes of three-body halo systems reacting with a target. The reaction between one of the particles and the target as well as the corresponding pairwise final state interactions are carefully treated. Both absorption and diffraction processes are included. Detailed differential and total cross sections are calculated for two-neutron (2n) removal from 6He by fragmentation on 12C. Effects due to the core shadowing are taken into account. Good agreement with available experimental data is obtained.

New Observables in Break-up Reactions of Three-body Halos

Momentum distributions of particles from fast three-body halo fragmentation reactions with polarized beams and outgoing fragments are analyzed by use of the sudden approximation. The final state interaction between the two non-disturbed particles is considered. We first give a general and detailed description of the method. We introduce observable quantities that emphasize the two-body correlations in the initial three-body structure as well as in the final two-body system. Using neutron removal from 11Li as an example we investigate the dependence of the polarization observables on the properties of the low-lying resonances and virtual states of the 10Li subsystem. These observables are very sensitive to the l > 0-waves in the wave functions, and they provide detailed information on the resonance structure of the neutron-core subsystem.

Square-well solution to the three-body problem

The angular part of the Faddeev equations is solved analytically for s-states for two-body square-well potentials. The results are, still analytically, generalized to arbitrary short-range potentials for both small and large distances. We consider systems with three identical bosons, three non-identical particles and two identical spin-1/2 fermions plus a third particle with arbitrary spin. The angular wave functions are in general linear combinations of trigonometric and exponential functions. The Efimov conditions are obtained at large distances. General properties and applications to arbitrary potentials are discussed. Gaussian potentials are used for illustrations. The results are useful for numerical calculations, where for example large distances can be treated analytically and matched to the numerical solutions at smaller distances. The saving is substantial.

The Pauli principle in a three-body cluster model and the momentum distributions after fragmentation of 6He and 11Li

We investigate two simple prescriptions to account for the Pauli principle in a three-body cluster model employing a new method based on an adiabatic hyperspherical expansion to solve the Faddeev equations in coordinate space. The resulting wave functions are computed and compared. They are furthermore tested on halo nuclei by calculations of momentum distributions and invariant mass spectra arising after fragmentation of fast $^6$He and $^{11}$Li in collisions with light targets. The prescriptions are very accurate and the available measured quantities are remarkably well reproduced when final state interactions are included.

Three-body Halos. IV. Momentum Distributions after Fragmentation

Momentum distributions of particles from nuclear break-up of fast three-body halos are calculated incorporating effects of final state interactions. The same two-body interactions between the particles are used to calculate both the ground state structure and the final state of the reaction processes. The ground state wave function reproduces size and energy of the halo nucleus. First we give a general and detailed description of the method. Then we investigate the effect of final state interactions in neutron removal and core break-up reactions for one- and two-dimensional momentum distributions. We compute specifically core and neutron momentum distributions from 11Li fragmentation and compare those with available experimental data. We conclude that 11Li must have a neutron-core relative state containing a p-state admixture of 20\%-30\%. The fragmentation data also strongly suggest that 10Li has an s-state at about 50 keV and a p-state around 500 keV.

Three-Body Halo Fragmentation: Polarization effects

Momentum distributions of particles from nuclear break-up of fast three-body halos are calculated for polarized beam and outgoing fragments. These momentum distributions are combined in observable quantities which emphasize the two-body correlations in the initial three-body structure as well as in the final two-body system. Applying the formalism to 11Li we find a sensitive dependence on the p-wave content and on the position of the p-resonances in 10Li. Polarization experiments are then a new tool to study correlations in nuclear halos.

Momentum Distributions of Particles from Three--Body Halo Fragmentation: Final State Interactions

Momentum distributions of particles from nuclear break-up of fast three-body halos are calculated consistently, and applied to $^{11}$Li. The same two-body interactions between the three particles are used to calculate the ground state structure and the final state of the reaction processes. We reproduce the available momentum distributions from $^{11}$Li fragmentation, together with the size and energy of $^{11}$Li, with a neutron-core relative state containing a $p$-state admixture of 20\%-30\%. The available fragmentation data strongly suggest an $s$-state in $^{10}$Li at about 50 keV, and indicate a $p$-state around 500 keV.

Relativistic versus Nonrelativistic Optical Potentials in A(e,e'p)B Reactions

We investigate the role of relativistic and nonrelativistic optical potentials used in the analysis of ($e,e'p$) data. We find that the relativistic calculations produce smaller ($e,e'p$) cross sections even in the case in which both relativistic and nonrelativistic optical potentials fit equally well the elastic proton--nucleus scattering data. Compared to the nonrelativistic impulse approximation, this effect is due to a depletion in the nuclear interior of the relativistic nucleon current, which should be taken into account in the nonrelativistic treatment by a proper redefinition of the effective current operator.

Three-body halos. III. Effects of finite core-spin

We investigate effects of finite core-spin in two-neutron halos in the three-body model consisting of two neutrons and a core. The states in the neutron-core subsystem can then have an additional splitting due to the coupling of the neutron and core spins. The connection between the structure of the total system and the states of the neutron-core subsystem depends strongly on this spin splitting. However, the spatial structure is essentially unchanged. The neutron momentum distribution in a nuclear dissociation reaction will consist of a broad and a narrow distribution arising from the two spin split neutron-core virtual states. The large distance behavior is investigated and the conditions for the Efimov effect turn out to be more restrictive. The magnetic moment is equal to the core-value independent of spin splitting and energies of the neutron-core states. The excited states of opposite parity depend strongly on the spin splitting. The parameters in our numerical examples are chosen to be appropriate for $^{11}$Li and $^{19}$B.

Spin dependent Momentum Distributions in Deformed Nuclei

We study the properties of the spin dependent one body density in momentum space for odd--A polarized deformed nuclei within the mean field approximation. We derive analytic expressions connecting intrinsic and laboratory momentum distributions. The latter are related to observable transition densities in {\bf p}--space that can be probed in one nucleon knock--out reactions from polarized targets. It is shown that most of the information contained in the intrinsic spin dependent momentum distribution is lost when the nucleus is not polarized. Results are presented and discussed for two prolate nuclei, $^{21}$Ne and $^{25}$Mg, and for one oblate nucleus, $^{37}$Ar. The effects of deformation are highlighted by comparison to the case of odd--A nuclei in the spherical model.

Probing Deformed Orbitals with \vec{A}(\vec{e}, e' N)B reactions

We present results for response functions and asymmetries in the nuclear reactions 37\vec{Ar}(\vec{e},e'n)36Ar and 37\vec{K}(\vec{e},e' p)36Ar at quasifree kinematics. We compare PWIA results obtained using deformed HF wave functions with PWIA and DWIA results obtained assuming a spherical mean field. We show that the complex structure of the deformed orbitals can be probed by coincidence measurements with polarized beam and targets.

Spectroscopic Factors in $^{40}$Ca and $^{208}$Pb from $(e,e'p)$: Fully Relativistic Analysis

We present results for spectroscopic factors of the outermost shells in $^{40}$Ca and $^{208}$Pb, which have been derived from the comparison between the available quasielastic ($e,e'p$) data from NIKHEF-K and the corresponding calculated cross-sections obtained within a fully relativistic formalism. We include exactly the effect of Coulomb distortion on the electron wave functions and discuss its role in the extraction of the spectroscopic factors from experiment. Without any adjustable parameter, we find spectroscopic factors of about 70\%, consistent with theoretical predictions. We compare our results with previous relativistic and nonrelativistic analyses of ($e,e'p$) data. In addition to Coulomb distortion effects we discuss different choices of the nucleon current operator and also analyze the effects due to the relativistic treatment of the outgoing-distorted and bound nucleon wave functions.

Polarized Deformed Nuclei Studied via Coincidence Polarized Electron Scattering: The case of 21 Ne

Coincidence reactions of the type $\svec{A}(\svec{e},e'N)B$ involving the scattering of polarized electrons from deformed polarized targets are discussed within the context of the plane--wave impulse approximation. A general expression for the polarized spectral function for transitions leaving the residual nucleus in discrete states is presented. General properties and angular symmetries exhibited by the polarization observables are discussed in detail. Results for unpolarized cross sections as well as for polarization ratios (asymmetries) are obtained for typical quasi--free kinematics. The dependences of the polarization observables on the bound neutron momentum, target polarization orientation, nuclear deformation and value of the momentum transfer $q$ are discussed in detail for various different kinematical situations.
