Relating B_s Mixing and B_s->mu+mu- with New Physics - An Update

This document describes my talk (based on work by JoAnne Hewett, Sandip Pakvasa, Alexey Petrov, Gagik Yeghiyan and myself) given at the 2011 Meeting of the Division of Particles and Fields of the American Physical Society (8/9/11-8/13/11) hosted by the Physics Department at Brown University. We perform a study of the Standard Model (SM) fit to the mixing quantity Delta M_B_s in order to bound contributions of New Physics (NP) to B_s mixing. We then use this to explore the branching fraction of B_s->mu+mu- in several models of New Physics.

Flavor Physics in the Quark Sector

One of the major challenges of particle physics has been to gain an in-depth understanding of the role of quark flavor and measurements and theoretical interpretations of their results have advanced tremendously: apart from masses and quantum numbers of flavor particles, there now exist detailed measurements of the characteristics of their interactions allowing stringent tests of Standard Model predictions. Among the most interesting phenomena of flavor physics is the violation of the CP symmetry that has been subtle and difficult to explore. Till early 1990s observations of CP violation were confined to neutral $K$ mesons, but since then a large number of CP-violating processes have been studied in detail in neutral $B$ mesons. In parallel, measurements of the couplings of the heavy quarks and the dynamics for their decays in large samples of $K, D$, and $B$ mesons have been greatly improved in accuracy and the results are being used as probes in the search for deviations from the Standard Model. In the near future, there will be a transition from the current to a new generation of experiments, thus a review of the status of quark flavor physics is timely. This report summarizes the results of the current generation of experiments that is about to be completed and it confronts these results with the theoretical understanding of the field.

Charm Mixing and CP-violations - Theory

I begin by commenting on the most recent experimental compilation of D^0 mixing data, emphasizing the so-called 'strong phase' issue. This is followed by a review of the theory underlying charm mixing, both Standard Model and New Physics. The mechanism of R_p-violation is used to illustrate the methodology for New Physics contributions and the relation of this to rare D^0 decays is pointed out. Finally, I address the subject of CP-violating asymmetries by describing some suggestions for future experimental studies and a recent theoretical analysis of New Physics contributions.

Charm Mixing - Theory

We discuss Standard Model (SM) and New Physics (NP) descriptions of D0 mixing. The SM part of the discussion addresses both quark level and hadron level contributions. The NP part describes our recent works on the rate difference Delta Gamma_D and the mass difference Delta M_D. In particular, we describe how the recent experimental determination of Delta M_D is found to place tightened restrictions on parameter spaces for 17 of 21 NP models considered in a recent paper by Hewett, Pakvasa, Petrov and myself.

QCD Condensates for the Light Quark V-A Correlator

We use the procedure of pinched-weight Finite Energy Sum Rules (pFESR) to determine the OPE coefficients a_6, ...,a_16 of the flavor ud V-A correlator in terms of existing hadronic tau decay data. We show by appropriate weight choices that the error on the dominant d=6 contribution, which is known to be related to the K -> Pi Pi matrix elements of the electroweak penguin operator in the chiral limit, may be reduced to below the ~15% level. The values we obtain for the OPE coefficients with d>8 are shown to naturally account for the discrepancies between our results for the d=6 and d=8 terms and those of previous analyses, which were obtained neglecting d>8 contributions.

K -> pi pi Electroweak Penguins in the Chiral Limit

We report on dispersive and finite energy sum rule analyses of the electroweak penguin matrix elements < (pi pi) | Q_{7,8} | K > in the chiral limit. We accomplish the correct perturbative matching (scale and scheme dependence) at NLO in alpha_s, and we describe two different strategies for numerical evaluation.

Electromagnetic Corrections to K->pi pi II - Dispersive Matching

We express the leading electromagnetic corrections in K-> pi pi amplitudes as integrals over the virtual photon squared-momentum Q^2. The high Q^2 behavior is obtained via the operator product expansion. The low Q^2 behavior is calculated using chiral perturbation theory. We model the intermediate Q^2 region using resonance contributions in order to enforce the matching of these two regimes. The results confirm our previous estimates that the electromagnetic corrections provide a reasonably small shift in the delta I - 3/2 amplitude.
