Feebly Interacting Particles: FIPs at LHCb

With the establishment and maturation of the experimental programs searching for new physics with sizeable couplings at the LHC, there is an increasing interest in the broader particle and astrophysics community for exploring the physics of light and feebly-interacting particles as a paradigm complementary to a New Physics sector at the TeV scale and beyond. FIPs@LHCb continues the successful series of the FIPs workshops, FIPs 2020 and FIPs 2022. The main focus of the workshop was to explore the LHCb potential to search for FIPs thanks to the new software trigger deployed during the recent upgrade. Equally important goals of the workshop were to update the available parameter space in the commonly used FIPs benchmarks by including recent results from the high energy physics community and to discuss recent theory progress necessary for a more accurate definition of observables related to FIP benchmarks. This document presents the summary of the talks presented at the workshops and the outcome of subsequent discussions.

Experimental Study of Rare Kaon Decays at J-PARC with KOTO and KOTO II

The rare kaon decay $K_L\toπ^0ν\barν$ is extremely sensitive to new physics, because the contribution to this decay in the Standard Model (SM) is highly suppressed and known very accurately; the branching ratio is $3\times 10^{-11}$ in the SM with a theoretical uncertainty of just 2%. The measurement of this branching ratio could provide essential new information about the flavor structure of the quark sector from the $s\to d$ transition. The decay is being searched for in the KOTO experiment at J-PARC, which has obtained the current best upper limit on the branching ratio of $2.2\times 10^{-9}$; a sensitivity to branching ratios below $10^{-10}$ is achievable by the end of the decade. A next-generation experiment at J-PARC, KOTO II, was proposed in 2024 with 82 members worldwide, including significant contributions from European members. The goal of KOTO II is to measure the $K_L\toπ^0ν\barν$ branching ratio with sensitivity below $10^{-12}$ in the 2030s. Discovery of the decay with $5σ$ significance is achievable at the SM value of the branching ratio. An indication of new physics with a significance of 90% is possible if the observed branching ratio differs by 40% from the SM value. Another important goal of KOTO II is to measure the branching ratio of the unobserved $K_L\to π^0e^+e^-$ decay, which can give an input to flavor structures of new physics. Other rare $K_L$ decays and hidden-sector particles are also in the scope of the study. After 2026, KOTO will be the only dedicated rare kaon decay experiment in the world, and KOTO II is the only future rare kaon decay project currently proposed. We would like to lead a global initiative for the experimental study of rare kaon decays, with significant contributions and support from the European community.

Workshop summary -- Kaons@CERN 2023

Kaon physics is at a turning point -- while the rare-kaon experiments NA62 and KOTO are in full swing, the end of their lifetime is approaching and the future experimental landscape needs to be defined. With HIKE, KOTO-II and LHCb-Phase-II on the table and under scrutiny, it is a very good moment in time to take stock and contemplate about the opportunities these experiments and theoretical developments provide for particle physics in the coming decade and beyond. This paper provides a compact summary of talks and discussions from the Kaons@CERN 2023 workshop.

First observation and study of the $K^{\pm} \rightarrow π^{0} π^{0} μ^{\pm} ν$ decay

The NA48/2 experiment at CERN reports the first observation of the $K^{\pm} \rightarrow π^{0} π^{0} μ^{\pm} ν$ decay based on a sample of 2437 candidates with 15% background contamination collected in 2003--2004. The decay branching ratio in the kinematic region of the squared dilepton mass above $0.03$~GeV$^2/c^4$ is measured to be $(0.65 \pm 0.03) \times 10^{-6}$. The extrapolation to the full kinematic space, using a specific model, is found to be $(3.45 \pm 0.16) \times 10^{-6}$, in agreement with chiral perturbation theory predictions.

Post-LS3 Experimental Options in ECN3

The Experimental Cavern North 3 (ECN3) is an underground experimental cavern on the CERN Prévessin site. ECN3 currently hosts the NA62 experiment, with a physics programme devoted to rare kaon decays and searches of hidden particles approved until Long Shutdown 3 (LS3). Several options are proposed on the longer term in order to make best use of the worldwide unique potential of the high-intensity/high-energy proton beam extracted from the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) in ECN3. The current status of their study by the CERN Physics Beyond Colliders (PBC) Study Group is presented, including considerations on beam requirements and upgrades, detector R&D and construction, schedules and cost, as well as physics potential within the CERN and worldwide landscape.

Feebly Interacting Particles: FIPs 2022 workshop report

Particle physics today faces the challenge of explaining the mystery of dark matter, the origin of matter over anti-matter in the Universe, the origin of the neutrino masses, the apparent fine-tuning of the electro-weak scale, and many other aspects of fundamental physics. Perhaps the most striking frontier to emerge in the search for answers involves new physics at mass scales comparable to familiar matter, below the GeV-scale, or even radically below, down to sub-eV scales, and with very feeble interaction strength. New theoretical ideas to address dark matter and other fundamental questions predict such feebly interacting particles (FIPs) at these scales, and indeed, existing data provide numerous hints for such possibility. A vibrant experimental program to discover such physics is under way, guided by a systematic theoretical approach firmly grounded on the underlying principles of the Standard Model. This document represents the report of the FIPs 2022 workshop, held at CERN between the 17 and 21 October 2022 and aims to give an overview of these efforts, their motivations, and the decadal goals that animate the community involved in the search for FIPs.

New veto hodoscope ANTI-0 for the NA62 experiment at CERN

The NA62 experiment is a fixed-target experiment at CERN SPS. The main goal of the experiment is to measure the branching ratio of the ultra-rare kaon decay $K^{+}\toπ^{+}ν\barν$. The NA62 detector allows also to study other rare kaon decays and to search for very weakly coupled particles of MeV-GeV mass-scale. The new ANTI-0 hodoscope is proposed and designed to veto events with charged halo particles entering the decay volume. It is now being assembled at CERN. The detector design, the performance simulation and the results of measurements with cosmic rays and test beams for the individual elements are presented. The commissioning and the first run of data-taking is scheduled for after the end of LS2 long shutdown (April 2021).

Search for $K^{+}\rightarrowπ^{+}ν\overlineν$ at NA62

$K^{+}\rightarrowπ^{+}ν\overlineν$ is one of the theoretically cleanest meson decay where to look for indirect effects of new physics complementary to LHC searches. The NA62 experiment at CERN SPS is designed to measure the branching ratio of this decay with 10\% precision. NA62 took data in pilot runs in 2014 and 2015 reaching the final designed beam intensity. The quality of 2015 data acquired, in view of the final measurement, will be presented.

ChPT tests at the NA48 and NA62 experiments at CERN

The NA48/2 Collaboration at CERN has accumulated unprecedented statistics of rare kaon decays in the Ke4 modes: Ke4(+-) ($K^\pm \to π^+ π^- e^\pm ν$) and Ke4(00) ($K^\pm \to π^0 π^0 e^\pm ν$) with nearly one percent background contamination. The detailed study of form factors and branching rates, based on these data, has been completed recently. The results brings new inputs to low energy strong interactions description and tests of Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT) and lattice QCD calculations. In particular, new data support the ChPT prediction for a cusp in the $π^0π^0$ invariant mass spectrum at the two charged pions threshold for Ke4(00) decay. New final results from an analysis of about 400 $K^\pm \to π^\pm γγ$ rare decay candidates collected by the NA48/2 and NA62 experiments at CERN during low intensity runs with minimum bias trigger configurations are presented. The results include a model-independent decay rate measurement and fits to ChPT description.

Recent NA48/2 and NA62 results

The NA48/2 Collaboration at CERN has accumulated and analysed unprecedented statistics of rare kaon decays in the $K_{e4}$ modes: $K_{e4}(+-)$ ($K^\pm \to π^+ π^- e^\pm ν$) and $K_{e4}(00)$ ($K^\pm \to π^0 π^0 e^\pm ν$) with nearly one percent background contamination. It leads to the improved measurement of branching fractions and detailed form factor studies. New final results from the analysis of 381 $K^\pm \to π^\pm γγ$ rare decay candidates collected by the NA48/2 and NA62 experiments at CERN are presented. The results include a decay rate measurement and fits to Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT) description.

Measurement of the branching ratio of the decay $Ξ^{0}\rightarrow Σ^{+} μ^{-} \barν_μ$

From the 2002 data taking with a neutral kaon beam extracted from the CERN-SPS, the NA48/1 experiment observed 97 $Ξ^{0}\rightarrow Σ^{+} μ^{-} \barν_μ$ candidates with a background contamination of $30.8 \pm 4.2$ events. From this sample, the BR($Ξ^{0}\rightarrow Σ^{+} μ^{-} \barν_μ$) is measured to be $(2.17 \pm 0.32_{\mathrm{stat}}\pm 0.17_{\mathrm{syst}})\times10^{-6}$.

Empirical parameterization of the K+- -> pi+- pi0 pi0 decay Dalitz plot

As first observed by the NA48/2 experiment at the CERN SPS, the $\p0p0$ invariant mass (M00) distribution from $\kcnn$ decay shows a cusp-like anomaly at M00=2m+, where m+ is the charged pion mass. An analysis to extract the pi pi scattering lengths in the isospin I=0 and I=2 states, a0 and a2, respectively, has been recently reported. In the present work the Dalitz plot of this decay is fitted to a new empirical parameterization suitable for practical purposes, such as Monte Carlo simulations of K+- -> pi+- pi0 pi0 decays.

Radiative Kaon Decay in Chiral Perturbation Theory

We analyze the possibility of experimental investigation of new low-energy relations between the values of resonance masses in the meson form factors and the differential rate of radiative kaon decay $K^+\to π^+ e^+e^-(μ^+μ^- )$ at the current level of the experimental precision. A set of arguments is listed in favour of that these relations can be a consequence of weak static interactions in the Standard Model.

High precision study of CP-violating charge asymmetry in K+- --> 3pi+- decays

A precise measurement of the direct CP violating charge asymmetry parameter $A_g$ in $K^\pm\toπ^\pmπ^+π^-$ decays by the NA48/2 experiment at CERN SPS is presented. The experiment has been designed not to be limited by systematic uncertainties in the asymmetry measurement. A preliminary result for the charge asymmetry $A_g=(-1.3\pm2.3)\times 10^{-4}$ has been obtained with a sample of $3.11\times 10^9$ selected events corresponding to the full collected statistics. The precision of the result is limited by the statistics used.
