Anomaly matching condition in two-dimensional systems

Based on Son-Yamamoto relation obtained for transverse part of triangle axial anomaly in ${\rm QCD}_4$, we derive its analog in two-dimensional system. It connects the transverse part of mixed vector-axial current two-point function with diagonal vector and axial current two-point functions. Being fully non-perturbative, this relation may be regarded as anomaly matching for conductivities or certain transport coefficients depending on the system. We consider the holographic RG flows in holographic Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theory via the Hamilton-Jacobi equation with respect to the radial coordinate. Within this holographic model it is found that the RG flows for the following relations are diagonal: Son-Yamamoto relation and the left-right polarization operator. Thus the Son-Yamamoto relation holds at wide range of energy scales.

Exciton-driven quantum phase transitions in holography

We study phase transitions driven by fermionic double-trace deformations in gauge-gravity duality. Both the strength of the double trace deformation and the infrared conformal dimension/self-energy scaling of the quasiparticle can be used to decrease the critical temperature to zero, leading to a line of quantum critical points. The self-energy scaling is controlled indirectly through an applied magnetic field and the quantum phase transition naturally involves the condensation of a fermion bilinear which models the spin density wave in an antiferromagnetic state. The nature of the quantum critical points depends on the parameters and we find either a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless-type transition or one of two distinct second order transitions with non-mean field exponents. One of these is an anomalous branch where the order parameter of constituent non-Fermi liquid quasiparticles is enhanced by the magnetic field. Stabilization of ordered non-Fermi liquids by a strong magnetic field is observed in experiments with highly oriented pyrolytic graphite.

Holographic description of strongly correlated electrons in external magnetic fields

We study the Fermi level structure of (2+1)-dimensional strongly interacting electron systems in external magnetic field using the AdS/CFT correspondence. The gravity dual of a finite density fermion system is a Dirac field in the background of the dyonic AdS-Reissner-Nordstrom black hole. In the probe limit the magnetic system can be reduced to the non-magnetic one, with Landau-quantized momenta and rescaled thermodynamical variables. We find that at strong enough magnetic fields, the Fermi surface vanishes and the quasiparticle is lost either through a crossover to conformal regime or through a phase transition to an unstable Fermi surface. In the latter case, the vanishing Fermi velocity at the critical magnetic field triggers the non-Fermi liquid regime with unstable quasiparticles and a change in transport properties of the system. We associate it with a metal-"strange metal" phase transition. We compute the DC Hall and longitudinal conductivities using the gravity-dressed fermion propagators. As expected, the Hall conductivity is quantized according to integer Quantum Hall Effect (QHE) at weak magnetic fields. At strong magnetic fields, new plateaus typical for the fractional QHE appear. Our pattern closely resembles the experimental results on graphite which are described using the fractional filling factor proposed by Halperin.

Holographic fermions in external magnetic fields

We study the Fermi level structure of 2+1-dimensional strongly interacting electron systems in external magnetic field using the AdS/CFT correspondence. Next we compute the DC Hall and longitudinal conductivities using the gravity-dressed fermion propagators. For dual fermions with a large charge, many different Fermi surfaces contribute and the Hall conductivity is quantized as expected for integer Quantum Hall Effect (QHE). At strong magnetic fields, as additional Fermi surfaces open up, new plateaus typical for the fractional QHE appear. The somewhat irregular pattern in the length of fractional QHE plateaus resemble the outcomes of experiments on thin graphite in a strong magnetic field. Finally, motivated by the absence of the sign problem in holography, we suggest a lattice approach to the AdS calculations of finite density systems.

Particle-hole instability in the $AdS_4$ holography

We show that particle-hole pairing is realized in the background of a charged black hole in magnetic field. The pairing instability occurs for sufficiently large fermion charges, which correspond to the Fermi liquid regime. The critical temperature for Fermi liquids is proportinal to the magnetic field and vanishes as we approach the non-Fermi liquid state. The pairing order parameter leads to a relative shift of the Fermi surfaces corresponding to the bulk fermions with spin up and down. The value of the shift in Fermi momentum $k_F$ and the critical temperature $T_c$ are proportional to the effective density of states at the Fermi surface. Our one-loop calculations provide a dual description of the magnetic catalysis for the lowest Landau level in graphene. This analyses may be relevant for the antiferromagnetic behavior in the cuprate superconductors and for the chiral spirals in the chiral magnetic effect. We also discuss thermodynamic and transport properties of a system at the boundary at zero magnetic field. The scaling behavior of the specific heat is $c\sim T$ for Fermi liquid and $c\sim T^{2ν}$ for non-Fermi liquid, while the behavior of the DC conductivity is the same $σ\sim T^{-2ν}$ in both cases. While it can be difficult to extract transport and hydrodynamic from the lattice, the $AdS/CFT$ approach provides a robust frame for nonperturbative calculation of these properties.

Gapless Surfaces in Anisotropic Superfluids

We demonstrate when p-wave pairing occurs between species whose free Fermi surfaces are mismatched the gap generally vanishes over a two-dimensional surface. We present detailed calculations of condensation energy, superfluid density (Meissner mass) and specific heat for such states. We also consider stability against separation into mixed phases. According to several independent criteria that can be checked at weak coupling, the resulting ``breached'' state appears to be stable over a substantial range of parameters. The simple models we consider are homogeneous in position space, and break rotation symmetry spontaneously. They should be realizable in cold atom systems.

Stability Conditions in Gapless Superconductors

Gapless superconductivity can arise when pairing occurs between fermion species with different Fermi surface sizes, provided there is a sufficiently large mismatch between Fermi surfaces and/or at sufficiently large coupling constant. In gapless states, secondary Fermi surfaces appear where quasiparticle excitation energy vanishes. This work focuses on homogeneous and isotropic superfluids in the s-wave channel, with either zero (conventional superconductor), one, or two spherical Fermi surfaces. The stability conditions for these candidate phases are analyzed. It is found that gapless states with one Fermi surface are stable in the BEC region, while gapless states with two Fermi surfaces are unstable in all parameter space. The results can be applied to ultracold fermionic atom systems.

Breached Superfluidity via P-Wave Coupling

Anisotropic pairing between fermion species with different fermi momenta opens two-dimensional areas of gapless excitations, thus producing a spatially homogeneous state with coexisting superfluid and normal fluids. This breached pairing state is stable and robust for arbitrarily small mismatch and weak p-wave coupling.

Diquark interaction and gaps for color superconductivity

Using flow equations, we derive an effective quark-quark interaction and obtain the coupled set of gap equations for the condensates of the CFL phase of massless $N_f=3$ dense QCD. The formalism developed here enables one to consider more general case of nonzero $s$-quark mass.

Color superconductivity from magnetic interaction induced by flow equations

Using flow equations, we derive an effective quark-quark interaction and obtain the coupled set of gap equations for the condensates of the CFL phase of massless N_f=3 dense QCD. We find two different sources of the infrared cutoff in magnetic interaction. When the penetration depth of the magnetic field inside the superconductor is less than the coherence length of quark-quark bound state, our results for the gap agree with those of Son. In the other case, we obtain parametric enhancement of the gap on the coupling constant.

Flow equations in the light-front QCD: mass gap and confinement

The light-front QCD is studied using the method of flow equations. Solving the light-front gluon gap equation, the effective gluon mass is generated dynamically. The effective interaction between static quark and antiquark, generated through elimination of the quark-gluon minimal coupling by flow equations, has the Coulomb, $1/q^2$, and confining, $1/q^4$, singular behavior. Elimination of the quark-gluon coupling at small gluon momenta is governed by the cutoff dependent, dynamical gluon mass, which makes this elimination possible and provides such an enhancement at $q\sim 0$. The cutoff, which regulates small light-front $x$ divergences, sets up a scale for the dynamical gluon mass and the string tension in the $q\bar{q}$-potential. The mechanism of confimenemet in the light-front frame is suggested, based on the singular nature of the light-front gauge along the light-front $x$-axis.
