Generalized Lyapunov Exponent and Transmission Statistics in One-dimensional Gaussian Correlated Potentials

Distribution of the transmission coefficient T of a long system with a correlated Gaussian disorder is studied analytically and numerically in terms of the generalized Lyapunov exponent (LE) and the cumulants of lnT. The effect of the disorder correlations on these quantities is considered in weak, moderate and strong disorder for different models of correlation. Scaling relations between the cumulants of lnT are obtained. The cumulants are treated analytically within the semiclassical approximation in strong disorder, and numerically for an arbitrary strength of the disorder. A small correlation scale approximation is developed for calculation of the generalized LE in a general correlated disorder. An essential effect of the disorder correlations on the transmission statistics is found. In particular, obtained relations between the cumulants and between them and the generalized LE show that, beyond weak disorder, transmission fluctuations and deviation of their distribution from the log-normal form (in a long but finite system) are greatly enhanced due to the disorder correlations. Parametric dependence of these effects upon the correlation scale is presented.

Diffusion of cold atomic gases in the presence of an optical speckle potential

We consider diffusion of a cold Fermi gas in the presence of a random optical speckle potential. The evolution of the initial atomic cloud in space and time is discussed. Analytical and numerical results are presented in various regimes. Diffusion of a Bose-Einstein condensate is also briefly discussed and similarity with the Fermi gas case is pointed out.

Lyapunov exponent for the laser speckle potential: a weak disorder expansion

Anderson localization of matter waves was recently observed with cold atoms in a weak 1D disorder realized with laser speckle potential [J. Billy et al., Nature 453, 891 (2008)]. The latter is special in that it does not have spatial frequency components above certain cutoff $q_{c}$. As a result, the Lyapunov exponent (LE), or inverse localization length, vanishes in Born approximation for particle wavevector $k>{1/2}q_{c}$, and higher orders become essential. These terms, up to the order four, are calculated analytically and compared with numerical simulations. For very weak disorder, LE exhibits a sharp drop at $k$ $={1/2}q_{c}$. For moderate disorder (a) the drop is less dramatic than expected from the fourth order approximation and (b) LE becomes very sensitive to the sign of the disorder skewness (which can be controlled in cold atom experiments). Both observations are related to the strongly non-Gaussian character of the speckle intensity.

Orbital Magnetism in Two-dimensional Integrable Systems

We study orbital magnetism of a degenerate electron gas in a number of two-dimensional integrable systems, within linear response theory. There are three relevant energy scales: typical level spacing, the energy related to the inverse time of flight across the system, and the Fermi energy. Correspondingly, there are three distinct temperature regimes: microscopic, mesoscopic, and macroscopic. In the first two regimes there are large finite-size effects in the magnetic susceptibility, whereas in the third regime the susceptibility approaches its macroscopic value. In some cases, such as a quasi-one-dimensional strip or a harmonic confining potential, it is possible to obtain analytic expressions for the susceptibility in the entire temperature range.
