Quantifying defects in graphene via Raman spectroscopy at different excitation energies

We present a Raman study of Ar(+)-bombarded graphene samples with increasing ion doses. This allows us to have a controlled, increasing, amount of defects. We find that the ratio between the D and G peak intensities for a given defect density strongly depends on the laser excitation energy. We quantify this effect and present a simple equation for the determination of the point defect density in graphene via Raman spectroscopy for any visible excitation energy. We note that, for all excitations, the D to G intensity ratio reaches a maximum for an inter-defect distance ~3nm. Thus, a given ratio could correspond to two different defect densities, above or below the maximum. The analysis of the G peak width and its dispersion with excitation energy solves this ambiguity.

Exciton BCS or BEC state in a semiconductor bilayer system?

We calculate the off-diagonal long range order (ODLRO) terms of the exciton--exciton correlation function of a semiconductor bilayer system with Coulomb interaction and a transverse magnetic field. We show that the formation of a BEC state is very sensitive to the width of the interaction in momentum space. This dependence is analytically derived and represents the key physical ingredient for the formation (or not) of an exciton condensate state.

Persistent current on a disordered mesoscopic ring with an embedded quantum dot

We calculate the ensemble averaged persistent current on disordered mesoscopic rings with an embedded quantum dot. We model the quantum dot as a single resonance and use Random Matrix Theory to model the impurities in the ring. Using Efetov's supersymmetry technique, we develop an analytical expression for the current. We find not only one, but two resonance peaks in the current. This is interpreted as quantum interference phenomenon.

Persistent currents in n-fold twisted Moebius strips

We investigate the influence of the topology on generic features of the persistent current in n-fold twisted Moebius strips formed of quasi one--dimensional mesoscopic rings, both for free electrons and in the weakly disordered regime. We find that there is no generic difference between the persistent current for untwisted rings and for Moebius strips with an arbitrary number of twists.

Decoherence effects on the tunneling rate of paramagnetic and superparamagnetic particles

We analyze the effects of the environment on the spin tunneling process of paramagnetic and superparamagnetic particles and conclude that the non assisted macroscopic tunneling rate is hardly affected in such case, but other more effective (phonon mediated) processes change the magnetization state of the particle. We conclude that for both, paramagnetic and superparamagnetic particles, the decoherence time scale is extremely short (~ 10^(-8..-16)seg), indicating thar coherent tunneling should be strongly suppressed in favor of incoherent tunneling, i.e., the population of higher levels with subsequent decay.

Tunneling Rate for Superparamagnetic Particles by the Instanton Method

We derive the tunneling rate for paramagnetic molecules in the context of a collective spin model. By means of path integral methods an analytical expression is derived. Given the very large spins in question (s ~ 3000 hbar), the observation of magnetization changes due to pure unitary tunnel effects is unlikely.
