Wigner Crystals in the lowest Landau level at low filling factors

We report on results of finite-size numerical studies of partially filled lowest Landau level at low electron filling factors. We find convincing evidence suggesting that electrons form Wigner Crystals at sufficiently low filling factors, and the critical filling factor is close to 1/7. At nu=1/7 we find the system undergoes a phase transition from Wigner Crystal to the incompressible Laughlin state when the short-range part of the Coulomb interaction is modified slightly. This transition is either continuous or very weakly first order.

Incompressible paired Hall state, stripe order and the composite fermion liquid phase in half-filled Landau levels

We consider the two lowest Landau levels at half filling. In the higher Landau level (nu =5/2), we find a first order phase transition separating a compressible striped phase from a paired quantum Hall state, which is identified as the Moore-Read state. The critical point is very near the Coulomb potential and the transition can be driven by increasing the width of the electron layer. We find a much weaker transition (either second order or a crossover) from pairing to the composite fermion Fermi liquid behavior. A very similar picture is obtained for the lowest Landau level but the transition point is not near the Coulomb potential.

Charge Density Wave Ordering in Half Filled High Landau Levels

We report on numerical studies of two-dimensional electron systems in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field, with a high Landau level index (N > 1) half filled by electrons. Strong and sharp peaks are found in the wave vector dependence of both static density susceptibility and equal-time density-density correlation function, in finite-size systems with up to twelve electrons. Qualitatively different from partially filled lowest (N=0) Landau level, these results are suggestive of a tendency toward charge density wave ordering in these systems. The ordering wave vector is found to decrease with increasing N.

Coulomb and Hard Core Skyrmion Tails

Quantum Hall skyrmions are quantized solitons of a ferromagnetic O(3) sigma-model. The reference, classical, solutions depend upon the interaction between the electrons and exhibit completely different asymptotic profiles for the physical Coulomb interaction than for the model hard core interaction frequently used to generate variational wavefunctions. In this note we show, by means of numerical calculations on (large) finite size systems at nu=1, that this physically important difference, crucial for a sharp definition of their statistics, persists for the quantized skyrmions at n=1.

Laughlin State on Stretched and Squeezed Cylinders and Edge Excitations in Quantum Hall Effect

We study the Laughlin wave function on the cylinder. We find it only describes an incompressible fluid when the two lengths of the cylinder are comparable. As the radius is made smaller at fixed area, we observe a continuous transition to the charge density wave Tao-Thouless state. We also present some exact properties of the wave function in its polynomial form. We then study the edge excitations of the quantum Hall incompressible fluid modeled by the Laughlin wave function. The exponent describing the fluctuation of the edge predicted by recent theories is shown to be identical with numerical calculations. In particular, for $ν=1/3$, we obtain the occupation amplitudes of edge state $n(k)$ for 4-10 electron size systems. When plotted as a function of the scaled wave vector they become essentially free of finite-size effects. The resulting curve obtains a very good agreement with the appropriate infinite-size Calogero-Sutherland model occupation numbers. Finally, we numerically obtain $n(k)$ of the edge excitations for some pairing states which may be relevant to the $ν=5/2$ incompressible Hall state.
