Axial exchange currents and nucleon spin

We calculate the hypercharge and flavor singlet axial couplings related to the spin of the nucleon in a constituent quark model. In addition to the standard one-body axial currents, the model includes two-body axial exchange currents. The latter are necessary to satisfy the Partial Conservation of Axial Current (PCAC) condition. For both axial couplings we find significant corrections to the standard quark model prediction. Exchange currents reduce the valence quark contribution to the nucleon spin and afford an interpretation of the missing nucleon spin as orbital angular momentum carried by nonvalence quark degrees of freedom.

Quark model study of the semileptonic B -> pi decay

The semileptonic decay B->pi is studied starting from a simple quark model and taking into account the effect of the B* resonance. A novel, multiply subtracted, Omnès dispersion relation has been implemented to extend the predictions of the quark model to all physical q^2 values. We find |V_{ub}|=0.0034 +/- 0.0003(exp.)+/- 0.0007(theory), in good agreement with experiment.

Study of exclusive semileptonic and nonleptonic decays of $B_c^-$ in a nonrelativistic quark model

We present results for different observables measured in semileptonic and non-leptonic decays of the $B_c^-$ meson. The calculations have been done within the framework of a nonrelativistic constituent quark model. In order to check the sensitivity of all our results against the inter-quark interaction we use five different quark--quark potentials. We obtain form factors, decay widths and asymmetry parameters for semileptonic $B_c^-\to c\bar c$ and $B_c^-\to \bar B$ decays. In the limit of infinite heavy quark mass our model reproduces the constraints of heavy quark spin symmetry. For the actual heavy quark masses we find nonetheless large corrections to that limiting situation for some form factors. We also analyze exclusive non-leptonic two--meson decay channels within the factorization approximation.

Inclusive $ω$ photoproduction from nuclei and $ω$ in the nuclear medium

With the aim of extracting information on the shift of the $ω$ mass in the nuclear medium we analyze data obtained at ELSA from where claims for evidence of a mass shift of the $ω$ have been made. We develop a Monte Carlo simulation code which takes into account the possible reactions in the experimental set up of $(γ~ A \to π^0 γ~X)$ in the vicinity of the $ω$ production region with subsequent $ω\to π^0 γ$ decay. We compare our results with experiment for the distribution of $π^0 γ$ invariant masses and conclude that the distribution is compatible with an enlarged $ω$ width of about 90 MeV at nuclear matter density and no shift in the mass. This change in the width would be compatible with the preliminary results obtained from the transparency ratio in the A dependence of $ω$ production. The discrepancy of the present conclusions with former claims of an evidence for a shift of the $ω$ mass stem from a different choice of background which is discussed in the paper.

Doubly heavy quark baryon spectroscopy and semileptonic decay

Working in the framework of a nonrelativistic quark model we evaluate the spectra and semileptonic decay widths for the ground state of doubly heavy $Ξ$ and $Ω$ baryons. We solve the three-body problem using a variational ansatz made possible by the constraints imposed by heavy quark spin symmetry. In order to check the dependence of our resultson the inter-quark interaction we have used five different quarkquark potentials which include Coulomb and hyperfine terms coming fromone-gluon exchange, plus a confining term. Our results for the spectra are in good agreement with a previous calculation done using a Faddeev approach. For the semileptonic decay our results for the total decay widths are in a good agreement with the ones obtained within a relativistic quark model in the quark-diquark approximation.

Study of semileptonic and nonleptonic decays of the $B_c^-$ meson

We evaluate semileptonic and two--meson nonleptonic decays of the $B_c^-$ meson in the framework of a nonrelativistic quark model. The former are done in spectator approximation using one--body current operators at the quark level. Our model reproduces the constraints of heavy quark spin symmetry obtained in the limit of infinite heavy quark mass. For the two--meson nonleptonic decays we work in factorization approximation. We compare our results to the ones obtained in different relativistic approaches.

Study of the semileptonic decays B->pi, D->pi and D->K

The semileptonic decay B->pi is studied starting from a simple quark model that takes into account the effect of the B* resonance. A novel, multiply subtracted, Omnes dispersion relation has been implemented to extend the predictions of the quark model to all q^2 values accesible in the physical decay. By comparison to the experimental data, we extract |V_ub|=0.0034 +/- 0.0003(exp.) +/- 0.0007(theory). As a further test of the model, we have also studied D->pi and D->K decays for which we get good agreement with experiment.

Strong one-pion decay of $Σ_c$, $Σ_c^*$ and $Ξ_c^*$

Working in the framework of a nonrelativistic quark model we evaluate the widths for the strong one-pion decays $Σ_c\toΛ_c π$, $Σ_c^*\toΛ_c π$ and $Ξ_c^{*}\toΞ_c π$. We take advantage of the constraints imposed by heavy quark symmetry to solve the three-body problem by means of a simple variational ansatz. We use partial conservation of the axial current hypothesis to get the strong vertices from weak axial current matrix elements. Our results are in good agreement with experimental data.

Non-Hermitian degeneracy of two unbound states

We solved numerically the implicit, trascendental equation that defines the eigenenergy surface of a degenerating isolated doublet of unbound states in the simple but illustrative case of the scattering of a beam of particles by a double barrier potential. Unfolding the degeneracy point with the help of a contact equivalent approximant, crossings and anticrossings of energies and widths, as well as the changes of identity of the poles of the S-matrix are explained in terms of sections of the eigenenergy surfaces.

Strong one-pion decay of ground state charmed baryons

We evaluate the widths for the strong decays $Σ_c\toΛ_c π$, $Σ_c^*\toΛ_c π$ and $Ξ_c^{*}\toΞ_c π$. The calculations have been done within a nonrelativistic constituent quark model with wave functions that take advantage of the constraints imposed by heavy quark symmetry. Partial conservation of axial current hypothesis allows us to determine the strong vertices from an analysis of the weak axial current matrix elements. Our results are in good agreement with experimental data.

Study of the strong $Σ_c\to Λ_c π$, $Σ_c^{*}\to Λ_c π$ and $Ξ_c^{*}\to Ξ_c π$ decays in a nonrelativistic quark model

We present results for the strong widths corresponding to the $Σ_c\to Λ_c π$, $Σ_c^{*}\to Λ_c π$ and $Ξ_c^{*}\to Ξ_c π$ decays. Unfolding a degeneracy point of two unbound states: Crossings and anticrossings of energies and widths

We show that when an isolated doublet of unbound states of a physical system becomes degenerate for some values of the control parameters of the system, the energy hypersurfaces representing the complex resonance energy eigenvalues as functions of the control parameters have an algebraic branch point of rank one in parameter space. Associated with this singularity in parameter space, the scattering matrix, S_l(E), and the Green's function, G_l^(+)(k; r,r'), have one double pole in the unphysical sheet of the complex energy plane. We characterize the universal unfolding or deformation of a typical degeneracy point of two unbound states in parameter space by means of a universal 2-parameter family of functions which is contact equivalent to the pole position function of the isolated doublet of resonances at the exceptional point and includes all small perturbations of the degeneracy condition up to contact equivalence.

A Heavy Quark Symmetry Approach to Baryons

We evaluate different properties of baryons with a heavy c or b quark. The use of Heavy Quark Symmetry (HQS) provides with an important simplification of the non relativistic three body problem which can be solved by means of a simple variational approach. This scheme is able to reproduce previous results obtained with more involved Faddeev calculations. The resulting wave functions are parametrized in a simple manner, and can be used to calculate further observables.

Combined nonrelativistic constituent quark model and heavy quark effective theory study of semileptonic decays of Λ_b and Ξ_b baryons

We present the results of a nonrelativistic constituent quark model study of the semileptonic decays $Λ_b^0 \to Λ_c^+ l^- {\bar ν}_l$ and $Ξ_b^0 \to Ξ_c^+ l^- {\bar ν}_l$. We work on coordinate space, with baryon wave functions recently obtained from a variational approach based on heavy quark symmetry . We develop a novel expansion of the electroweak current operator, which supplemented with heavy quark effective theory constraints, allows us to predict the baryon form factors and the decay distributions for all $q^2$ (or equivalently $w$) values accessible in the physical decays. Our results for the partially integrated longitudinal and transverse decay widths, in the vicinity of the $w=1$ point, are in excellent agreement with lattice calculations. Comparison of our integrated $Λ_b-$decay width to experiment allows us to extract the $V_{cb}$ Cabbibo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element for which we obtain a value of $|V_{cb}| = 0.040\pm 0.005 ({\rm stat}) ^{+0.001}_{-0.002} ({\rm theory})$ also in excellent agreement with a recent determination by the DELPHI Collaboration from the exclusive ${\bar {\rm B}^0_{\rm d}} \to {\rm D}^{*+}l^-{\bar ν}_l$ decay. Besides for the $Λ_b (Ξ_b)-$decay, the longitudinal and transverse asymmetries, and the longitudinal to transverse decay ratio are $ =-0.954\pm 0.001 (-0.945\pm 0.002)$, $ =-0.665\pm 0.002 (-0.628\pm 0.004)$ and $R_{L/T}=1.63\pm 0.02 (1.53\pm 0.04)$, respectively.

Study of the semileptonic decay Λ_b^0 \to Λ_c^+ l^- \barν_l

Within the framework of a nonrelativistic quark model we evaluate the six form factors associated to the Λ_b^0 \to Λ_c^+ l^- \barν_l semileptonic decay. The baryon wave functions were evaluated using a variational approach applied to a family of trial functions constrained by Heavy Quark Symmetry (HQS). We use a spectator model with only one-body current operators. For these operators we keep up to first order terms on the internal (small) heavy quark momentum, but all orders on the transferred (large) momentum. Our result for the partially integrated decay width is in good agreement with lattice calculations. Comparison of our total decay width to experiment allows us to extract the V_{cb} Cabbibo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element for which we obtain a value of |V_{cb}|=0.047\pm 0.005 in agreement with a recent determination by the DELPHI Collaboration. Furthermore, we obtain the universal Isgur-Wise function with a slope parameter ρ^2=0.98 in agreement with lattice results.

Charmed and Bottom Baryons: a Variational Approach based on Heavy Quark Symmetry

The use of Heavy Quark Symmetry to study bottom and charmed baryons leads to important simplifications of the non-relativistic three body problem, which turns out to be easily solved by a simple variational ansatz. Our simple scheme reproduces previous results (baryon masses, charge and mass radii, $...$) obtained by solving the Faddeev equations with simple non-relativistic quark--quark potentials, adjusted to the light and heavy--light meson spectra. Wave functions, parameterized in a simple manner, are also given and thus they can be easily used to compute further observables. Our method has been also used to find the predictions for strangeness-less baryons of the SU(2) chirally inspired quark-quark interactions. We find that the one pion exchange term of the chirally inspired interactions leads to relative changes of the $Λ_b$ and $Λ_c$ binding energies as large as 90%.

Charm- and Bottom- Baryons: A Variational Approach Using Heavy Quark Symmetry

We evaluate masses of bottom and charmed baryons using several non-relativistic quark potentials which parameters have been adjusted to the meson spectra. Heavy Quark Symmetry leads to important simplifications of the three body problem, which turns out to be easily solved by a simple variational ansatz. The wave functions obtained can be readily used to compute further observables as mass densities or form factors. The quark-quark potentials explored so far, show an overall good agreement with the experimental masses.

Axial exchange currents and the spin content of the nucleon

In a chiral quark model where chiral symmetry is introduced via a non-linear sigma model, we evaluate the axial couplings g_A(0), g_A^8(0) and g_A^0(0 )related to the spin structure of the nucleon. Our calculation includes one-body and two-body axial current and pion absorption operators, which satisfy the Partial Conservation of Axial Current (PCAC) condition. While g_A(0) is dominated by the one-body axial current we find significant corrections due to two-body axial exchange currents in g_A^8(0) and g_A^0(0). Interestingly, the axial current associated with gluon exchange reduces g_A^8(0) from 1 to 0.6. Our analysis shows that the so-called ``proton spin crisis'' can be resolved in a constituent quark model in which PCAC is satisfied. Furthermore, we use the PCAC constraint in order to determine the couplings of the eta and eta' mesons to nucleons.
