Impact of the non-canonical approach to the exact solution of the ideal one-dimensional electron gas confined with an anisotropic quantum wire of oscillator-shaped profile

We study an exactly solvable model that can be interpreted as an ideal one-dimensional electron gas confined with an anisotropic quantum wire potential of oscillator-shaped profile. The homogeneous nature of the quantum wire is broken by the introduction of the effective electron mass, which changes with radial distance. We solve the problem described both within the canonical and the non-canonical approach. Analytical expressions of the wavefunctions of the stationary states for both cases in terms of the Laguerre polynomials are obtained, as well as the discrete energy spectrum related to these wavefunctions. Additionally, an exact solution to the angular position part of the position-dependent mass Schrödinger equation within the non-canonical approach leads to the angular-part wavefunctions of the even and odd states expressed through the Gegenbauer polynomials. Possible limit relations and special cases are studied too.

Deformation of the Heisenberg-Weyl algebra and the Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak{osp}\left( {1|2} \right)$: exact solution for the quantum harmonic oscillator with a position-dependent mass

We propose a new deformation of the quantum harmonic oscillator Heisenberg-Weyl algebra with a parameter $a>-1$. This parameter is introduced through the replacement of the homogeneous mass $m_0$ in the definition of the momentum operator $\hat p_x$ as well as in the creation-annihilation operators $\hat a^\pm$ with a mass varying with position $x$. The realization of such a deformation is shown through the exact solution of the corresponding Schrödinger equation for the non-relativistic quantum harmonic oscillator within the canonical approach. The obtained analytical expression of the energy spectrum consists of an infinite number of equidistant levels, whereas the wavefunctions of the stationary states of the problem under construction are expressed through the Hermite polynomials. Then, the Heisenberg-Weyl algebra deformation is generalized to the case of the Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak{osp}\left( {1|2} \right)$. It is shown that the realization of such a generalized superalgebra can be performed for the parabose quantum harmonic oscillator problem, the mass of which possesses a behavior completely overlapping with the position-dependent mass of the canonically deformed harmonic oscillator problem. This problem is solved exactly for both even and odd stationary states. It is shown that the energy spectrum of the deformed parabose oscillator is still equidistant, however, both even and odd state wavefunctions are now expressed through the Laguerre polynomials. Some basic limit relations recovering the canonical harmonic oscillator with constant mass are also discussed briefly.

The Wigner function of a semiconfined harmonic oscillator model with a position-dependent effective mass

We propose a phase-space representation concept in terms of the Wigner function for a quantum harmonic oscillator model that exhibits the semiconfinement effect through its mass varying with the position. The new method is used to compute the Wigner distribution function exactly for such a semiconfinement quantum system. This method suppresses the divergence of the integrand in the definition of the quantum distribution function and leads to the computation of its analytical expressions for the stationary states of the semiconfined oscillator model. For this quantum system, both the presence and absence of the applied external homogenous field are studied. Obtained exact expressions of the Wigner distribution function are expressed through the Bessel function of the first kind and Laguerre polynomials. Furthermore, some of the special cases and limits are discussed in detail.

Exact solution of the position-dependent mass Schrödinger equation with the completely positive oscillator-shaped quantum well potential

Two exactly-solvable confined models of the completely positive oscillator-shaped quantum well are proposed. Exact solutions of the position-dependent mass Schrödinger equation corresponding to the proposed quantum well potentials are presented. It is shown that the discrete energy spectrum expressions of both models depend on certain positive confinement parameters. The spectrum exhibits positive equidistant behavior for the model confined only with one infinitely high wall and non-equidistant behavior for the model confined with the infinitely high wall from both sides. Wavefunctions of the stationary states of the models under construction are expressed through the Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials. In general, the Jacobi polynomials appearing in wavefunctions depend on parameters $a$ and $b$, but the Laguerre polynomials depend only on the parameter $a$. Some limits and special cases of the constructed models are discussed.

Dynamical symmetry of a semiconfined harmonic oscillator model with a position-dependent effective mass

Dynamical symmetry algebra for a semiconfined harmonic oscillator model with a position-dependent effective mass is constructed. Selecting the starting point as a well-known factorization method of the Hamiltonian under consideration, we have found three basis elements of this algebra. The algebra defined through those basis elements is a $\mathfrak{su}\left(1,1 \right)$ Heisenberg-Lie algebra. Different special cases and the limit relations from the basis elements to the Heisenberg-Weyl algebra of the non-relativistic quantum harmonic oscillator are discussed, too.

On the exactly-solvable semi-infinite quantum well of the non-rectangular step-harmonic profile

An exactly-solvable model of the non-relativistic harmonic oscillator with a position-dependent effective mass is constructed. The model behaves itself as a semi-infinite quantum well of the non-rectangular profile. Such a form of the profile looks like a step-harmonic potential as a consequence of the certain analytical dependence of the effective mass from the position and semiconfinement parameter $a$. Both states of the discrete and continuous spectrum are studied. In the case of the discrete spectrum, wavefunctions of the oscillator model are expressed through the Bessel polynomials. The discrete energy spectrum is non-equidistant and finite as a consequence of its dependence on parameter $a$, too. In the case of the continuous spectrum, wavefunctions of the oscillator model are expressed through the $_1F_1$ hypergeometric functions. At the limit, when the parameter $a$ goes to infinity, both wavefunctions, and the energy spectrum of the model under construction correctly reduce to corresponding results of the usual non-relativistic harmonic oscillator with a constant effective mass. Namely, wavefunctions of the discrete spectrum recover wavefunctions in terms of the Hermite polynomials, and wavefunctions of the continuous spectrum simply vanish. We also present a new limit relation that reduces Bessel polynomials directly to Hermite polynomials and prove its correctness using the mathematical induction technique.

The Husimi function of a semiconfined harmonic oscillator model with a position-dependent effective mass

The phase space representation for a semiconfined harmonic oscillator model with a position-dependent effective mass is constructed. We have found the Husimi distribution function for the stationary states of the oscillator model under consideration for both cases without and with the applied external homogeneous field. The obtained function is expressed through the double sum of the parabolic cylinder function. Different special cases and the limit relations are discussed, too.

Exact solution of the position-dependent effective mass and angular frequency Schrödinger equation: harmonic oscillator model with quantized confinement parameter

We present an exact solution of a confined model of the non-relativistic quantum harmonic oscillator, where the effective mass and the angular frequency are dependent on the position. The free Hamiltonian of the proposed model has the form of the BenDaniel--Duke kinetic energy operator. The position-dependency of the mass and the angular frequency is such that the homogeneous nature of the harmonic oscillator force constant $k$ and hence the regular harmonic oscillator potential is preserved. As a consequence thereof, a quantization of the confinement parameter is observed. It is shown that the discrete energy spectrum of the confined harmonic oscillator with position-dependent mass and angular frequency is finite, has a non-equidistant form and depends on the confinement parameter. The wave functions of the stationary states of the confined oscillator with position-dependent mass and angular frequency are expressed in terms of the associated Legendre or Gegenbauer polynomials. In the limit where the confinement parameter tends to $\infty$, both the energy spectrum and the wave functions converge to the well-known equidistant energy spectrum and the wave functions of the stationary non-relativistic harmonic oscillator expressed in terms of Hermite polynomials. The position-dependent effective mass and angular frequency also become constant under this limit.

The $\mathfrak{su}(2)$ Krawtchouk oscillator model under the ${\cal C}{\cal P}$ deformed symmetry

We define a new algebra, which can formally be considered as a ${\cal C}{\cal P}$ deformed $\mathfrak{su}(2)$ Lie algebra. Then, we present a one-dimensional quantum oscillator model, of which the wavefunctions of even and odd states are expressed by Krawtchouk polynomials with fixed $p=1/2$, $K_{2n}(k;1/2,2j)$ and $K_{2n}(k-1;1/2,2j-2)$. The dynamical symmetry of the model is the newly introduced $\mathfrak{su}(2)_{{\cal C}{\cal P}}$ algebra. The model itself gives rise to a finite and discrete spectrum for all physical operators (such as position and momentum). Among the set of finite oscillator models it is unique in the sense that any specific limit reducing it to a known oscillator models does not exist.

On a pair of difference equations for the $_4F_3$ type orthogonal polynomials and related exactly-solvable quantum systems

We introduce a pair of novel difference equations, whose solutions are expressed in terms of Racah or Wilson polynomials depending on the nature of the finite-difference step. A number of special cases and limit relations are also examined, which allow to introduce similar difference equations for the orthogonal polynomials of the $ _3 F_2$ and $ _2 F_1$ types. It is shown that the introduced equations allow to construct new models of exactly-solvable quantum dynamical systems, such as spin chains with a nearest-neighbour interaction and fermionic quantum oscillator models.

The oscillator model for the Lie superalgebra sh(2|2) and Charlier polynomials

We investigate an algebraic model for the quantum oscillator based upon the Lie superalgebra sh(2|2), known as the Heisenberg-Weyl superalgebra or "the algebra of supersymmetric quantum mechanics", and its Fock representation. The model offers some freedom in the choice of a position and a momentum operator, leading to a free model parameter gamma. Using the technique of Jacobi matrices, we determine the spectrum of the position operator, and show that its wavefunctions are related to Charlier polynomials C_n with parameter gamma^2. Some properties of these wavefunctions are discussed, as well as some other properties of the current oscillator model.

Discrete series representations for sl(2|1), Meixner polynomials and oscillator models

We explore a model for the one-dimensional quantum oscillator based upon the Lie superalgebra sl(2|1). For this purpose, a class of discrete series representations of sl(2|1) is constructed, each representation characterized by a real number beta>0. In this model, the position and momentum operators of the oscillator are odd elements of sl(2|1) and their expressions involve an arbitrary parameter gamma. In each representation, the spectrum of the Hamiltonian is the same as that of the canonical oscillator. The spectrum of the momentum operator can be continuous or infinite discrete, depending on the value of gamma. We determine the position wavefunctions both in the continuous and discrete case, and discuss their properties. In the discrete case, these wavefunctions are given in terms of Meixner polynomials. From the embedding osp(1|2)\subset sl(2|1), it can be seen why the case gamma=1 corresponds to the paraboson oscillator. Consequently, taking the values (beta,gamma)=(1/2,1) in the sl(2|1) model yields the canonical oscillator.

A finite oscillator model related to sl(2|1)

We investigate a new model for the finite one-dimensional quantum oscillator based upon the Lie superalgebra sl(2|1). In this setting, it is natural to present the position and momentum operators of the oscillator as odd elements of the Lie superalgebra. The model involves a parameter p (0<p<1) and an integer representation label j. In the (2j+1)-dimensional representations W_j of sl(2|1), the Hamiltonian has the usual equidistant spectrum. The spectrum of the position operator is discrete and turns out to be of the form $\pm\sqrt{k}$, where k=0,1,...,j. We construct the discrete position wave functions, which are given in terms of certain Krawtchouk polynomials. These wave functions have appealing properties, as can already be seen from their plots. The model is sufficiently simple, in the sense that the corresponding discrete Fourier transform (relating position wave functions to momentum wave functions) can be constructed explicitly.

The su(2)_α Hahn oscillator and a discrete Hahn-Fourier transform

We define the quadratic algebra su(2)_α which is a one-parameter deformation of the Lie algebra su(2) extended by a parity operator. The odd-dimensional representations of su(2) (with representation label j, a positive integer) can be extended to representations of su(2)_α. We investigate a model of the finite one-dimensional harmonic oscillator based upon this algebra su(2)_α. It turns out that in this model the spectrum of the position and momentum operator can be computed explicitly, and that the corresponding (discrete) wavefunctions can be determined in terms of Hahn polynomials. The operation mapping position wavefunctions into momentum wavefunctions is studied, and this so-called discrete Hahn-Fourier transform is computed explicitly. The matrix of this discrete Hahn-Fourier transform has many interesting properties, similar to those of the traditional discrete Fourier transform.

Finite oscillator models: the Hahn oscillator

A new model for the finite one-dimensional harmonic oscillator is proposed based upon the algebra u(2)_α. This algebra is a deformation of the Lie algebra u(2) extended by a parity operator, with deformation parameter α. A class of irreducible unitary representations of u(2)_α is constructed. In the finite oscillator model, the (discrete) spectrum of the position operator is determined, and the position wave functions are shown to be dual Hahn polynomials. Plots of these discrete wave functions display interesting properties, similar to those of the parabose oscillator. We show indeed that in the limit, when the dimension of the representations goes to infinity, the discrete wave functions tend to the continuous wave functions of the parabose oscillator.

Transition to sub-Planck structures through the superposition of q-oscillator stationary states

We investigate the superposition of four different quantum states based on the $q$-oscillator. These quantum states are expressed by means of Rogers-Szegö polynomials. We show that such a superposition has the properties of the quantum harmonic oscillator when $q\to 1$, and those of a compass state with the appearance of chessboard-type interference patterns when $q \to 0$.

Quantum state transfer in spin chains with q-deformed interaction terms

We study the time evolution of a single spin excitation state in certain linear spin chains, as a model for quantum communication. Some years ago it was discovered that when the spin chain data (the nearest neighbour interaction strengths and the magnetic field strengths) are related to the Jacobi matrix entries of Krawtchouk polynomials or dual Hahn polynomials, so-called perfect state transfer takes place. The extension of these ideas to other types of discrete orthogonal polynomials did not lead to new models with perfect state transfer, but did allow more insight in the general computation of the correlation function. In the present paper, we extend the study to discrete orthogonal polynomials of q-hypergeometric type. A remarkable result is a new analytic model where perfect state transfer is achieved: this is when the spin chain data are related to the Jacobi matrix of q-Krawtchouk polynomials. The other cases studied here (affine q-Krawtchouk polynomials, quantum q-Krawtchouk polynomials, dual q-Krawtchouk polynomials, q-Hahn polynomials, dual q-Hahn polynomials and q-Racah polynomials) do not give rise to models with perfect state transfer. However, the computation of the correlation function itself is quite interesting, leading to advanced q-series manipulations.

On the Wigner function of the relativistic finite-difference oscillator in an external field

The phase-space representation for a relativistic linear oscillator in a homogeneous external field expressed through the finite-difference equation is constructed. Explicit expressions of the relativistic oscillator Wigner quasi-distribution function for the stationary states as well as of states of thermodynamical equilibrium are obtained and their correct limits are shown.
