Light Singlet Fermions and Neutrino Physics

The existence of a light singlet fermion mixed with the electron neutrino is hinted by the simultaneous explanation of various neutrino anomalies. We show that supersymmetry can provide a natural framework for the existence and the desired properties of such a fermion. Quasi Goldstone fermions (QGF) of spontaneously broken global symmetries like the Peccei-Quinn symmetry or lepton number can mix properly with the neutrinos provided the presence of the R-parity breaking term $\e LH_2$. The lightness of QGF can be a consequence of non-minimal Kähler potentials like that of no-scale supergravity. In order to keep R-parity, such a sterile component has to be placed in a new singlet superfield with no vacuum expectation value. In the context of the standard seesaw mechanism the lightness of such a singlet can be understood by imposing a $R$-symmetry.

Quasi Goldstone Fermion As a Sterile Neutrino

The existence of sterile neutrino is hinted by simultaneous explanation of diverse neutrino anomalies. We suggest that the quasi Goldstone fermions (QGF) arising in supersymmetric theory as a result of spontaneous breaking of global symmetry like the Peccei-Quinn symmetry or the lepton number symmetry can play a role of the sterile neutrino. The smallness of mass of QGF ($m_S \sim 10^{-3}-10$ eV) can be related to the specific choice of superpotential or Kähler potential (e.g., no-scale kinetic terms for certain superfields). Mixing of QGF with neutrinos implies the $R$-parity violation. It can proceed via the coupling of QGF with the Higgs supermultiplets or directly with the lepton doublet. A model which accounts for the solar and atmospheric anomalies and the dark matter is presented.

Models of Light Singlet Fermion and Neutrino Phenomenology

We suggest that a singlet fermion $S$ exists beyond the standard see-saw structure. It mixes with light neutrinos via interactions with the right-handed neutrino components, so that $\n_e \to S$ conversion solves the solar neutrino problem. Supersymmetry endowed with R-symmetry is shown to give a natural framework for existence, mass scale and mixing ($\sin^22þ_{es} \sim (0.1-1.5)\cdot 10^{-2}$) of such a fermion. Models with an approximate horizontal symmetry are constructed, which embed the fermion $S$ and explain simultaneously solar, atmospheric, hot dark matter problems as well as may predict the oscillation $\bar{\n}_\m \to \bar{\n}_e$ in the region of sensitivity of KARMEN and LSND experiments.

Axino Mass in Supergravity Models

We analyze the mass of the axino, the fermionic superpartner of the axion, in general supergravity models incorporating a Peccei--Quinn--symmetry and determine the cosmological constraints on this mass. In particular, we derive a simple criterion to identify models with an LSP--axino which has a mass of $O(m_{3/2}^2/f_{PQ})=O($keV) and can serve as a candidate for (warm) dark matter. We point out that such models have very special properties and in addition, the small axino mass has to be protected against radiative corrections by demanding small couplings in the Peccei--Quinn--sector. Generically, we find an axino mass of order $m_{3/2}$. Such masses are constrained by the requirement of an axino decay which occurs before the decoupling of the ordinary LSP. Especially, for a large Peccei--Quinn--scale $f_{PQ}>10^{11}$ GeV this constraint might be difficult to fulfill.

Structure Formation with Majoron Supermultiplet

We show that the late-decaying particle scenario may be realized in the supersymmetric singlet majoron model with the majoron scale $10-200$ TeV. The smajoron decaying into two neutrinos is the late-decaying particle with the mass $0.1-1$ TeV and the life-time $2\times10^3-8\times10^4$ seconds. The lower limit of the majorino mass is $4-40$ TeV in order to avoid the overclosure of the universe due to the decay-produced LSP. The muon neutrino and the tau neutrino can be used to explain the atmospheric and the solar neutrino deficit.

Natural $μ$-term with Peccei-Quinn Symmetry

The generalized Higgs mass term $NH_1H_2$ of the supersymmetric standard model is used to implement the Peccei-Quinn Symmetry to solve the strong-CP problem. Then supersymmetry breaking can generate the Higgs mass parameter $μ$ of order $m_{3/2}$ through soft-breaking parameters. This kind of extension contains extra light fields of the axion supermultiplet whose dominant coupling may come from the supersymmetric axion-Higgs-Higgs coupling. We present a working example and discuss the cosmological implications of the model.

Supersymmetric Singlet Majorons and Cosmology

We examine cosmological constraints on the lepton number breaking scale in supersymmetric singlet majoron models. Special attention is drawn to the model dependence arising from the particular choice of a certain majoron extension and a cosmological scenario. We find that the bounds on the symmetry breaking scale can vary substantially. Large values of this scale can be allowed if the decoupling temperature of smajoron and majorino exceeds the reheating temperature of inflation. In the opposite case an upper bound depending on the majoron model can be obtained which, however, is unlikely to be much larger than $10^{10}$ GeV.

NJL breaking of supersymmetric GUTs

We analyze the breakdown of SUSY GUTs driven by Nambu--Jona--Lasinio condensates. Starting with the most general gauge invariant and pure Kählerian Lagrangian up to quartic order we solve the one loop gap equation and determine the breaking direction. This is done for various classes of groups and spectra of fundamental particles which especially cover the most promising unifying groups $SU(5)$, $SO(10)$ and $E_6$. Heavy masses for the fundamental as well as for the composite particles are calculated. The results are used to single out candidates which may lead to an acceptable low energy theory. In these models we discuss some phenomenological aspects and point out the difficulties in constructing phenomenological viable theories in our scenario.

Discrete Gauge Symmetries in Axionic Extensions of the SSM

We examine discrete gauge symmetries in axionic extensions of the SSM which provide a solution of the $μ$-problem. Automatic-PQ symmetry and proton stability are shown to be guaranteed by certain discrete symmetries. Focusing on the L-violating discrete symmetries we discuss two sources of neutrino masses and their relevance for the solar neutrino problem.

Axino Mass

The mass of the axino is computed in realistic supersymmetric extensions of the standard model. It is found to be strongly model dependent and can be as small as a few keV but also as large as the gravitino mass. Estimates of this mass can only be believed once a careful analysis of the scalar potential has been performed.
