The onset of the non-linear regime in unified dark matter models

We discuss the onset of the non-linear regime in the context of unified dark matter models involving a generalised Chaplygin gas. We show that the transition from dark matter-like to dark energy-like behaviour will never be smooth. In some regions of space the transition will never take place while in others it may happen sooner or later than naively expected. As a result the linear theory used in previous studies may break down late in the matter dominated era even on large cosmological scales. We study the importance of this effect showing that its magnitude depends on the exact form of the equation of state in the low density regime. We expect that our results will be relevant for other unified dark matter scenarios particularly those where the quartessence candidate is a perfect fluid.

Cosmological perturbations and the transition from contraction to expansion

We investigate both analytically and numerically the evolution of scalar perturbations generated in models which exhibit a smooth transition from a contracting to an expanding Friedmann universe. We find that the resulting spectral index in the late radiation dominated universe depends on which of the $Ψ$ or \$zeta$ variables passes regularly through the transition. The results can be parameterized through the exponent $q$ defining the rate of contraction of the universe. For $q \geq -1/2$ we find that there are no stable cases where both variables are regular during the transition. In particular, for $0<q\ll 1$, we find that the resulting spectral index is close to scale invariant if $Ψ$ is regular, whereas it has a steep blue behavior if $ζ$ is regular. We also show that as long as $q\leqslant 1$, perturbations arising from the Bardeen potential remain small during contraction in the sense that there exists a gauge in which all the metric and matter perturbation variables are small.

Tracking quintessential inflation from brane worlds

We analyse the mechanism of quintessential inflation in brane world scenarios for a number of particle physics inspired scalar potentials. We constrain the parameter space of those scalar potentials and comment on the likelihood that we could discriminate these models from standard inflation, based on upcoming large scale structure and cosmic microwave background observations.

A model independent approach to the dark energy equation of state

The consensus of opinion in cosmology is that the Universe is currently undergoing a period of accelerated expansion. With current and proposed high precision experiments it offers the hope of being able to discriminate between the two competing models that are being suggested to explain the observations, namely a cosmological constant or a time dependent `Quintessence' model. The latter suffers from a plethora of scalar field potentials all leading to similar late time behaviour of the universe, hence to a lack of predictability. In this paper, we develop a model independent approach which simply involves parameterizing the dark energy equation of state in terms of known observables. This allows to analyse the impact dark energy has had on cosmology without the need to refer to particular scalar field models and opens up the possibility that future experiments will be able to constrain the dark energy equation of state in a model independent manner.

Model-independent dark energy differentiation with the ISW effect

We study the integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect using a model-independent parameterization of the dark energy equation of state. Cosmic variance severely restricts the class of models distinguishable from Lambda-CDM. In particular if the present value of the equation of state satisfies w_Q^o <-0.8, the only distinguishable models are those with a rapidly varying equation of state, characterized by a late transition occurring at redshifts z<3. Due to the degeneracy with other cosmological parameters, models with a slowly varying behavior cannot be differentiated from each other or from a cosmological constant using even cosmic variance-limited CMB measurements. This may place a fundamental limit on our understanding of the origin of the presently observed acceleration.

Dynamics of tachyonic preheating after hybrid inflation

We study the instability of a scalar field at the end of hybrid inflation, using both analytical techniques and numerical simulations. We improve previous studies by taking the inflaton field fully into account, and show that the range of unstable modes depends sensitively on the velocity of the inflaton field, and thereby on the Hubble rate, at the end of inflation. If topological defects are formed, their number density is determined by the shortest unstable wavelength. Finally, we show that the oscillations of the inflaton field amplify the inhomogeneities in the energy density, leading to local symmetry restoration and faster thermalization. We believe this explains why tachyonic preheating is so effective in transferring energy away from the inflaton zero mode.

Constraining the quintessence equation of state with SnIa data and CMB peaks

Quintessence has been introduced as an alternative to the cosmological constant scenario to account for the current acceleration of the universe. This new dark energy component allows values of the equation of state parameter $w_{Q}^0\geq-1$, and in principle measurements of cosmological distances to Type Ia supernovae can be used to distinguish between these two types of models. Assuming a flat universe, we use the supernovae data and measurements of the position of the acoustic peaks in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) spectra to constrain a rather general class of Quintessence potentials, including inverse power law models and recently proposed Supergravity inspired potentials. In particular we use a likelihood analysis, marginalizing over the dark energy density $Ω_{Q}$, the physical baryon density $Ω_{b}h^2$ and the scalar spectral index $n$, to constrain the slopes of our Quintessence potential. Considering only the first Doppler peak the best fit in our range of models gives $w_{Q}^0\sim-0.8$. However, including the SnIa data and the three peaks, we find an upper limit on the present value of the equation of state parameter, $-1\leq w_{Q}^0\leq-0.93$ at $2σ$, a result that appears to rule out a class of recently proposed potentials.

Electroweak preheating on a lattice

In many inflationary models, a large amount of energy is transferred rapidly to the long-wavelength matter fields during a period of preheating after inflation. We study how this changes the dynamics of the electroweak phase transition if inflation ends at the electroweak scale. We simulate a classical SU(2)xU(1)+Higgs model with initial conditions in which the energy is concentrated in the long-wavelength Higgs modes. With a suitable initial energy density, the electroweak symmetry is restored non-thermally but broken again when the fields thermalize. During this symmetry restoration, baryon number is violated, and we measure its time evolution, pointing out that it is highly non-Brownian. This makes it difficult to estimate the generated baryon asymmetry.

Gravitational instantons, extra dimensions and form fields

A broad class of higher dimensional instanton solutions are found for a theory which contains gravity, a scalar field and antisymmetric tensor fields of arbitrary rank. The metric used, a warp product of an arbitrary number of any compact Einstein manifolds, includes many of great interest in particle physics and cosmology. For example 4D FRW universes with additional dimensions compactified on a Calabi-Yau three fold, a torus, a compact hyperbolic manifold or a sphere are all included. It is shown that the solution of this form which dominates the Hartle Hawking path integral is always a higher dimensional generalisation of a Hawking Turok instanton when the potential of the scalar field is such that these instantons can exist. On continuation to Lorentzian signature such instantons give rise to a spacetime in which all of the spatial dimensions are of equal size and where the spatial topology is that of a sphere. The extra dimensions are thus not hidden. In the case where the potential for the scalar field is generated solely by a dilatonic coupling to the form fields we find no integrable instantons at all. In particular we find no integrable solutions of the type under consideration for the supergravity theories which are the low energy effective field theories of superstrings.

Quintessence arising from exponential potentials

We demonstrate how exponential potentials that could arise in the early Universe as a result of Kaluza-Klein type compactifications of string theory, can lead to cosmological solutions which correspond to the currently observed accelerating Universe. The idea is simple, relying solely on the known scaling properties associated with exponential potentials. In particular we show that the existence of stable attractor solutions implies that the results hold for a wide range of coupling constants and initial conditions.

Gravitational waves in non-singular string cosmologies

We study the evolution of tensor metric fluctuations in a class of non-singular models based on the string effective action, by including in the perturbation equation the higher-derivative and loop corrections needed to regularise the background solutions. We discuss the effects of such higher-order corrections on the final graviton spectrum, and we compare the results of analytical and numerical computations.

Numerical simulations of electroweak baryogenesis at preheating

It has recently been suggested that the baryon washout problem of standard electroweak baryogenesis could be avoided if inflation ends at a low enough energy density and a parametric resonance transfers its energy repidly into the standard model fields. We present preliminary results of numerical simulations in a SU(2)xU(1) gauge-Higgs model in which this process was studied.

Quintessence models in Supergravity

Scalar field models of quintessence typically require that the expectation value of the field today is of order the Planck mass, if we want them to explain the observed acceleration of the Universe. This suggests that we should be considering models in the context of supergravity. We discuss a particular class of supergravity models and analyze their behavior under different choices of the Kahler metric.

Phase transitions from preheating in gauge theories

We show by studying the Abelian Higgs model with numerical lattice simulations that non-thermal phase transitions arising out of preheating after inflation are possible in gauge-Higgs models under rather general circumstances. This may lead to the formation of gauged topological defects and, if the scale at which inflation ends is low enough, to electroweak baryogenesis after preheating.

Gravitational instantons and internal dimensions

We Study instanton solutions in general relativity with a scalar field. The metric ansatz we use is composed of a particular warp product of general Einstein metrics, such as those found in a number of cosmological settings, including string cosmology, supergravity compactifications and general Kaluza Klein reductions. Using the Hartle-Hawking prescription the instantons we obtain determine whether metrics involving extra compact dimensions of this type are favoured as initial conditions for the universe. Specifically, we find that these product metric instantons, viewed as constrained instantons, do have a local minima in the action. These minima are then compared with the higher dimensional version of the Hawking-Turok instantons, and we argue that the latter always have lower action than those associated with these product metrics.

Superstring Cosmology

Aspects of superstring cosmology are reviewed with an emphasis on the cosmological implications of duality symmetries in the theory. The string effective actions are summarized and toroidal compactification to four dimensions reviewed. Global symmetries that arise in the compactification are discussed and the duality relationships between the string effective actions are then highlighted. Higher-dimensional Kasner cosmologies are presented and interpreted in both string and Einstein frames, and then given in dimensionally reduced forms. String cosmologies containing both non-trivial Neveu-Schwarz/Neveu-Schwarz and Ramond-Ramond fields are derived by employing the global symmetries of the effective actions. Anisotropic and inhomogeneous cosmologies in four-dimensions are also developed. The review concludes with a detailed analysis of the pre-big bang inflationary scenario. The generation of primordial spectra of cosmological perturbations in such a scenario is discussed. Possible future directions offered in the Horava-Witten theory are outlined.

The graceful exit in pre-big bang string cosmology

We re-examine the graceful exit problem in the pre-big bang scenario of string cosmology, by considering the most general time-dependent classical correction to the Lagrangian with up to four derivatives. By including possible forms for quantum loop corrections we examine the allowed region of parameter space for the coupling constants which enable our solutions to link smoothly the two asymptotic low-energy branches of the pre-big bang scenario, and observe that these solutions can satisfy recently proposed entropic bounds on viable singularity free cosmologies.

Cosmological parameter dependence in local string theories of structure formation

We perform a new and accurate study of the dependence on cosmological parameters of structure formation with local cosmic strings. The crucial new ingredients are the inclusion of the effects of gravitational backreaction on the evolution of the network, and the accurate evolution of the network through the radiation to matter transition. Our work re-iterates the fact that expanding Universe numerical simulations only probe a transient regime, and we incorporate our results into the unequal time correlators recently measured. We then compute the CMB and CDM fluctuations' power spectra for various values of the Hubble constant $H_0$ and baryon fraction $Ω_b$. We find that, whereas the dependence on $Ω_b$ is negligible, there is still a strong dependence on $H_0$.
