Superconducting phases of strange quark matter in the NJL model

We analyze the color-flavor-locked phase of strange quark matter modelled by the three-flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) framework with and without magnetic field and discuss some additional constraints on the stability scenario when a high magnetic field is applied. We compare the results obtained by employing the MIT Bag Model and discuss the pairing gap behavior and its influence on the equation of state.

Neutrino Propagation in a Strongly Magnetized Medium

We derive general expressions at the one-loop level for the coefficients of the covariant structure of the neutrino self-energy in the presence of a constant magnetic field. The neutrino energy spectrum and index of refraction are obtained for neutral and charged media in the strong-field limit ($M_{W}\gg \sqrt{B}\gg m_{e},T,μ,| \mathbf{p}| $) using the lowest Landau level approximation. The results found within the lowest Landau level approximation are numerically validated, summing in all Landau levels, for strong $B\gg T^{2}$ and weakly-strong $B \gtrsim T^{2}$ fields. The neutrino energy in leading order of the Fermi coupling constant is expressed as the sum of three terms: a kinetic-energy term, a term of interaction between the magnetic field and an induced neutrino magnetic moment, and a rest-energy term. The leading radiative correction to the kinetic-energy term depends linearly on the magnetic field strength and is independent of the chemical potential. The other two terms are only present in a charged medium. For strong and weakly-strong fields, it is found that the field-dependent correction to the neutrino energy in a neutral medium is much larger than the thermal one. Possible applications to cosmology and astrophysics are considered.

Beyond-Constant-Mass-Approximation Magnetic Catalysis in the Gauge Higgs-Yukawa Model

Beyond-constant-mass approximation solutions for magnetically catalyzed fermion and scalar masses are found in a gauge Higgs-Yukawa theory in the presence of a constant magnetic field. The obtained fermion masses are several orders of magnitude larger than those found in the absence of Yukawa interactions. The masses obtained within the beyond-constant-mass approximation exactly reduce to the results within the constant-mass approach when the condition $ν\ln (\frac{1}{\hat{m}^{2}})\ll 1$ is satisfied. Possible applications to early universe physics and condensed matter are discussed.

Hypermagnetic Field Effects in the Thermal Bath of Chiral Fermions

The dispersion relations for leptons in the symmetric phase of the electroweak model in the presence of a constant hypermagnetic field are investigated. The one-loop fermion self-energies are calculated in the lowest Landau level approximation and used to show that the hypermagnetic field forbids the generation of the ''effective mass'' found as a pole of the fermions' propagators at high temperature and zero fields. In the considered approximation leptons behave as massless particles propagating only along the direction of the external field. The reported results can be of interest for the cosmological implications of primordial hypermagnetic fields.

Thermal Conductivity in 3D NJL Model Under External Magnetic Field

The thermal conductivity of the (2+1)-dimensional NJL model in the presence of a constant magnetic field is calculated in the mean-field approximation and its different asymptotic regimes are analyzed. Taking into account the dynamical generation of a fermion mass due to the magnetic catalysis phenomenon, it is shown that for certain relations among the theory's parameters (particle width, temperature and magnetic field), the profile of the thermal conductivity versus the applied field exhibits kink- and plateau-like behaviors. We point out possible applications to planar condensed matter.

Magnetic Field Induced Gap and Kink Behavior of Thermal Conductivity

The thermal conductivity of a quasiparticle (QP) system described by a relativistic four-fermion interaction model in the presence of an external magnetic field is calculated. It is shown that, for narrow width of quasiparticles, the thermal conductivity, as a function of the applied magnetic field, exhibits a kink behavior at a critical field $B_{c}\sim T^{2}$. The kink is due to the opening of a gap in the QP spectrum at a critical magnetic field $B_c$ and to the enhancement of the transitions between the zeroth and first Landau levels. Possible applications of the results are discussed.

Neutrino Self-Energy and Index of Refraction in Strong Magnetic Field: A New Approach

The Ritus' $E_{p}$ eigenfunction method is extended to the case of spin-1 charged particles in a constant electromagnetic field and used to calculate the one-loop neutrino self-energy in the presence of a strong magnetic field. From the obtained self-energy, the neutrino dispersion relation and index of refraction in the magnetized vacuum are determined within the field range $m_{e}^{2}\ll eB\ll M_{W}^{2}$. The propagation of neutrinos in the magnetized vacuum is anisotropic due to the dependence of the index of refraction on the angle between the directions of the neutrino momentum and the external field. Possible cosmological implications of the results are discussed.

Photon Propagation in Space-Time with a Compactified Spatial Dimension

The one-loop effects of vacuum polarization induced by untwisted fermions in QED in a nonsimply connected space-time with topology $S^{1}\times R^{3}$ are investigated. It is found that photon propagation in this system is anisotropic, appearing several massive photon modes and a superluminal transverse mode. For small compactification radius $a$, the superluminal velocity increases logarithmically with $a$. At low energies the photon masses lead to an effective confinement of the gauge fields into a (2+1)-dimensional manifold transverse to the compactified direction. The system shows a topologically induced directional superconductivity.

Spontaneous CPT Violation in Confined QED

Symmetry breaking induced by untwisted fermions in QED in a nonsimply connected spacetime with topology $S^{1}\times R^{3}$ is investigated. It is found that the discrete CPT symmetry of the theory is spontaneously broken by the appearance of a constant vacuum expectation value of the electromagnetic potential along the direction of space periodicity. The constant potential is shown to be gauge nonequivalent to zero in the nonsimply connected spacetime under consideration. Due to the symmetry breaking, one of the electromagnetic modes of propagation is massive with a mass that depends on the inverse of the compactification length. As a result, the system exhibits a sort of topological directional superconductivity.

Non-Perturbative Effects of Strong Magnetic Fields on Neutrino Self-energy: A New Approach

The Ritus' $E_{p}$ eigenfunction method is extended to the case of spin-1 charged particles in a constant electromagnetic field and used to calculate the one-loop neutrino self-energy in the strong-field approximation $m_{e}^{2}\ll eB\ll M_{W}^{2}$. The implications of the obtained results for neutrino oscillations in the early Universe, assuming the existence of a sufficiently large ($m_{e}^{2}\ll eB\ll m_μ^{2}$) primordial magnetic field, are discussed.

Magnetic Catalysis in the Presence of Scalar Fields

The influence of scalar field interactions in the magnetic catalysis phenomenom is studied in a gauge theory with scalar and fermion fields. It is shown that the external magnetic field catalyzes the appearance of a fermion-antifermion condensate along with a non-zero scalar vev, hence generating a fermion dynamical mass and breaking the discrete chiral symmetry of the theory. The model does not require the introduction of a scalar mass term with a wrong sign in the original Lagrangian to generate the scalar vev, nor does it exhibit dimensional transmutation ''a la Coleman-Weinberg.'' The scalar vev noticeably enhances the dynamically generated fermion mass. Possible cosmological applications of these results are suggested.

On Magnetic Catalysis and Gauge Symmetry Breaking

Non-perturbative effects of constant magnetic fields in a Higgs-Yukawa gauge model are studied using the extremum equations of the effective action for composite operators. It is found that the magnetic field induces a Higgs condensate, a fermion-antifermion condensate, and a fermion dynamical mass, hence breaking the discrete chiral symmetry of the theory. The results imply that for a non-simple group extension of the present model, the external magnetic field would either induce or reinforce gauge symmetry breaking. Possible cosmological applications of these results in the electroweak phase transition are suggested.

Boundary Effects in the Magnetic Catalysis of Chiral Symmetry Breaking

The catalysis of chiral symmetry breaking by an applied constant magnetic field and in the presence of boundaries along third axis is investigated in the four-dimensional Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. It is shown that in case of periodic boundary conditions for fermions the magnetic field breaks the chiral symmetry, generating a dynamical mass even at the weakest attractive interaction between fermions. For antiperiodic boundary conditions the effect of the finite third dimension is to counteract the chiral symmetry breaking.

Magnetic Response in Anyon Fluid at High Temperature

The magnetic response of the charged anyon fluid at temperatures lower and larger than the fermion enery gap $ω_{c}$ is investigated in the self-consistent field approximation. We prove that the anyon system with boundaries exhibits a total Meissner effect at temperatures smaller than the fermion energy gap ($T\ll ω_{c}$). The London penetration length at $T$ $\sim 200K$ is of the order $λ\sim 10^{-5}cm$. At $T\gg ω_{c}$ a new phase, characterized by an inhomogeneous magnetic penetration, is found. We conclude that the energy gap, $ω_{c},$ defines a scale that separates two phases: a superconducting phase at $T\ll ω_{c}$, and a non-superconducting one at $T\gg ω_{c}$.

Boundary Effects in 2+1 Dimensional Maxwell-Chern-Simons Theory

The boundary effects in the screening of an applied magnetic field in a finite temperature 2+1 dimensional model of charged fermions minimally coupled to Maxwell and Chern-Simons fields are investigated. It is found that in a sample with only one boundary -a half-plane- a total Meissner effect takes place, while in a sample with two boundaries -an infinite strip- the external magnetic field partially penetrates the material.

Superconductivity in Anyon Fluid at Finite Temperature and Density

The boundary effects in the screening of an applied magnetic field in a charged anyon fluid at finite temperature and density are investigated. By analytically solving the extremum equations of the sytem and minimizing the free energy density, we find that in a sample with only one boundary (the half plane), a total Meissner effect takes place; while the sample with two boundaries (the infinite strip) exhibits a partial Meissner effect. The short-ranges modes of propagation of the magnetic field inside the fluid are characterized by two temp erature dependent penetration lengths.

Regge trajectories of the charged string in a magnetic background

The set of Casimir operators associated with the global symmetries of a charged string in a constant magnetic background are found. It is shown that the string rest energy can be expressed as a combination of these invariants. Using this result, the Regge trajectories of the system are derived. The first Regge trajectory is given by a family of infinitely many parallel straight-lines, one for each spin projection along the magnetic field.
