An analytical representation for the simplest of the diffusions

An analytical representation for the spatial and temporal dynamics of the simplest of the diffusions -- Bronwian diffusion in an homogeneous slab geometry, with radial symmetry -- is presented. This representation is useful since it describes the time-resolved (as well as stationary) radial profiles, for point-like external excitation, which are more important in practical experimental situations than the case of plane-wave external excitation. The analytical representation can be used, under linear system response conditions, to obtain the full dynamics for any spatial and temporal profiles of initial perturbation of the system. Its main value is the quantitative accounting of absorption in the spatial distributions. This can contribute to obtain unambiguous conclusions in reports of Anderson localization of classical waves in three dimensions.

Signatures of Lévy flights with annealed disorder

We present theoretical and experimental results of Lévy flights of light originating from a random walk of photons in a hot atomic vapor. In contrast to systems with quenched disorder, this system does not present any correlations between the position and the step length of the random walk. In an analytical model based on microscopic first principles including Doppler broadening we find anomalous Lévy-type superdiffusion corresponding to a single-step size distribution P(x) proportional to x^(-1-alpha), with alpha=1. We show that this step size distribution leads to a violation of Ohm's law [T_(diff) proportional to L^(-alpha/2) different from 1/L], as expected for a Lévy walk of independent steps. Furthermore the spatial profile of the transmitted light develops power law tails [I(r) proportional to r^(-3-alpha)]. In an experiment using a slab geometry with hot rubidium vapor, we measured the total diffuse transmission T_(diff) and the spatial profile of the transmitted light T_{diff}(r). We obtained the microscopic Lévy parameter alpha under macroscopic multiple scattering conditions paving the way to investigation of Lévy flights in different atomic physics and astrophysics systems.

Radiation trapping in 1D using the Markov chain formalism: A computational physics project

A computational model study for complete frequency redistribution linear incoherent two-level atomic radiation trapping in optically dense media using the multiple scattering representation is presented. This model study discuss at length the influence of the spectral distributions, overall opacity and emission quantum yield to trapping distorted ensemble quantities stressing physical insight and with a non-specialist audience in mind. Macroscopic reemission yield, lifetime, steady state spectra and spatial distributions are calculated as a function of intrinsic emission yield, opacity and external excitation mode for Doppler, Lorentz and Voigt lineshapes. The work could constitute the basis for a final undergraduate or beginning graduate project in computational physics instruction and implements the analytical developments of the previous instalment of this contribution.

Advantages of the multiple scattering representation approach to radiation trapping

A simple stochastic formulation of the multiple scattering representation solution of the classical linear incoherent trapping problem is presented for a broad audience. A clear connection with the alternative Holstein's solution ansatz is emphasized by the (re)interpretation of the fundamental mode as the one associated with a relaxed nonchanging spatial distribution of excitation. Expressions for overall relaxation parameters (ensemble emission yield and lifetime) as well as time-resolved (decay and spatial distribution) and steady-state quantities (spectra and spatial distribution) are given with the fundamental mode contribution singled out. The multiple scattering representation is advocated for final undergraduate and beginning graduate physics instruction based on physical insight and computation feasibility. This will be illustrated in the following instalment of this contribution.

Photonic superdiffusive motion in resonance line radiation trapping - partial frequency redistribution effects

The relation between the jump length probability distribution function and the spectral line profile in resonance atomic radiation trapping is considered for Partial Frequency Redistribution (PFR) between absorbed and reemitted radiation. The single line Opacity Distribution Function [M.N. Berberan-Santos et.al. J.Chem.Phys. 125, 174308 (2006)] is generalized for PFR and used to discuss several possible redistribution mechanisms (pure Doppler broadening, combined natural and Doppler broadening and combined Doppler, natural and collisional broadening). It is shown that there are two coexisting scales with a different behavior: the small scale is controlled by the intricate PFR details while the large scale is essentially given by the atom rest frame redistribution asymptotic. The pure Doppler and combined natural, Doppler and collisional broadening are characterized by both small and large scale superdiffusive Levy flight behaviors while the combined natural and Doppler case has an anomalous small scale behavior but a diffusive large scale asymptotic. The common practice of assuming complete redistribution in core radiation and frequency coherence in the wings of the spectral distribution is incompatible with the breakdown of superdiffusion in combined natural and Doppler broadening conditions.
