Nilpotency of skew braces and multipermutation solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation

We study relations between different notions of nilpotency in the context of skew braces and applications to the structure of solutions to the Yang-Baxter equation. In particular, we consider annihilator nilpotent skew braces, an important class that turns out to be a brace-theoretic analog to the class of nilpotent groups. In this vein, several well-known theorems in group theory are proved in the more general setting of skew braces.

On various types of nilpotency of the structure monoid and group of a set-theoretic solution of the Yang--Baxter equation

Given a finite bijective non-degenerate set-theoretic solution $(X,r)$ of the Yang--Baxter equation we characterize when its structure monoid $M(X,r)$ is Malcev nilpotent. Applying this characterization to solutions coming from racks, we rediscover some results obtained recently by Lebed and Mortier, and by Lebed and Vendramin on the description of finite abelian racks and quandles. We also investigate bijective non-degenerate multipermutation (not necessarily finite) solutions $(X,r)$ and show, for example, that this property is equivalent to the solution associated to the structure monoid $M(X,r)$ (respectively structure group $G(X,r)$) being a multipermuation solution and that $G=G(X,r)$ is solvable of derived length not exceeding the multipermutation level of $(X,r)$ enlarged by one, generalizing results of Gateva-Ivanova and Cameron obtained in the involutive case. Moreover, we also prove that if $X$ is finite and $G=G(X,r)$ is nilpotent, then the torsion part of the group $G$ is finite, it coincides with the commutator subgroup $[G,G]_+$ of the additive structure of the skew left brace $G$ and $G/[G,G]_+$ is a trivial left brace.

Primitive set-theoretic solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation

To every involutive non-degenerate set-theoretic solution $(X,r)$ of the Yang-Baxter equation on a finite set $X$ there is a naturally associated finite solvable permutation group ${\mathcal G}(X,r)$ acting on $X$. We prove that every primitive permutation group of this type is of prime order $p$. Moreover, $(X,r)$ is then a so called permutation solution determined by a cycle of length $p$. This solves a problem recently asked by A. Ballester-Bolinches. The result opens a new perspective on a possible approach to the classification problem of all involutive non-degenerate set-theoretic solutions.

Radical and weight of skew braces and their applications to structure groups of solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation

We define the radical and weight of a skew left brace and provide some basic properties of these notions. In particular, we obtain a Wedderburn type decomposition for Artinian skew left braces. Furthermore, we prove analogues of a theorem of Wiegold, a theorem of Schur and its converse in the context of skew left braces. Finally, we apply these results to detect torsion in the structure group of a finite bijective non-degenerate set-theoretic solution of the Yang-Baxter equation.

Every finite abelian group is a subgroup of the additive group of a finite simple left brace

Left braces, introduced by Rump, have turned out to provide an important tool in the study of set theoretic solutions of the quantum Yang-Baxter equation. In particular, they have allowed to construct several new families of solutions. A left brace $(B,+,\cdot )$ is a structure determined by two group structures on a set $B$: an abelian group $(B,+)$ and a group $(B,\cdot)$, satisfying certain compatibility conditions. The main result of this paper shows that every finite abelian group $A$ is a subgroup of the additive group of a finite simple left brace $B$ with metabelian multiplicative group with abelian Sylow subgroups. This result complements earlier unexpected results of the authors on an abundance of finite simple left braces.

Factorizations of skew braces

We introduce strong left ideals of skew braces and prove that they produce non-trivial decomposition of set-theoretic solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation. We study factorization of skew left braces through strong left ideals and we prove analogs of Itô's theorem in the context of skew left braces. As a corollary, we obtain applications to the retractability problem of involutive non-degenerate solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation. Finally, we classify skew braces that contain no non-trivial proper ideals.

Set-theoretic solutions of the Yang--Baxter equation, associated quadratic algebras and the minimality condition

Given a finite non-degenerate set-theoretic solution $(X,r)$ of the Yang-Baxter equation and a field $K$, the structure $K$-algebra of $(X,r)$ is $A=A(K,X,r)=K\langle X\mid xy=uv \mbox{ whenever }r(x,y)=(u,v)\rangle$. Note that $A=\oplus_{n\geq 0} A_n$ is a graded algebra, where $A_n$ is the linear span of all the elements $x_1\cdots x_n$, for $x_1,\dots ,x_n\in X$. One of the known results asserts that the maximal possible value of $\dim (A_2)$ corresponds to involutive solutions and implies several deep and important properties of $A(K,X,r)$. Following recent ideas of Gateva-Ivanova \cite{GI2018}, we focus on the minimal possible values of the dimension of $A_2$. We determine lower bounds and completely classify solutions $(X,r)$ for which these bounds are attained in the general case and also in the square-free case. This is done in terms of the so called derived solution, introduced by Soloviev and closely related with racks and quandles. Several problems posed in \cite{GI2018} are solved.

Iterated matched products of finite braces and simplicity; new solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation

Braces were introduced by Rump as a promising tool in the study of the set-theoretic solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation. It has been recently proved that, given a left brace $B$, one can construct explicitly all the non-degenerate involutive set-theoretic solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation such that the associated permutation group is isomorphic, as a left brace, to $B$. It is hence of fundamental importance to describe all simple objects in the class of finite left braces. In this paper we focus on the matched product decompositions of an arbitrary finite left brace. This is used to construct new families of finite simple left braces.

A description of a class of finite semigroups that are near to being Malcev nilpotent

In this paper we continue the investigations on the algebraic structure of a finite semigroup $S$ that is determined by its associated upper non-nilpotent graph $\mathcal{N}_{S}$. The vertices of this graph are the elements of $S$ and two vertices are adjacent if they generate a semigroup that is not nilpotent (in the sense of Malcev). We introduce a class of semigroups in which the Mal'cev nilpotent property lifts through ideal chains. We call this the class of \B\ semigroups. The definition is such that the global information that a semigroup is not nilpotent induces local information, i.e. some two-generated subsemigroups are not nilpotent. It turns out that a finite monoid (in particular, a finite group) is \B\ if and only if it is nilpotent. Our main result is a description of \B\ finite semigroups $S$ in terms of their associated graph ${\mathcal N}_{S}$. In particular, $S$ has a largest nilpotent ideal, say $K$, and $S/K$ is a 0-disjoint union of its connected components (adjoined with a zero) with at least two elements.

The Non-Nilpotent Graph of a Semigroup

We associate a graph ${\mathcal N}_{S}$ with a semigroup $S$ (called the upper non-nilpotent graph of $S$). The vertices of this graph are the elements of $S$ and two vertices are adjacent if they generate a semigroup that is not nilpotent (in the sense of Malcev). In case $S$ is a group this graph has been introduced by A. Abdollahi and M. Zarrin and some remarkable properties have been proved. The aim of this paper is to study this graph (and some related graphs, such as the non-commuting graph) and to discover the algebraic structure of $S$ determined by the associated graph. It is shown that if a finite semigroup $S$ has empty upper non-nilpotent graph then $S$ is positively Engel. On the other hand, a semigroup has a complete upper non-nilpotent graph if and only if it is a completely simple semigroup that is a band. One of the main results states that if all connected ${\mathcal N}_{S}$-components of a semigroup $S$ are complete (with at least two elements) then $S$ is a band that is a semilattice of its connected components and, moreover, $S$ is an iterated total ideal extension of its connected components. We also show that some graphs, such as a cycle $C_{n}$ on $n$ vertices (with $n\geq 5$), are not the upper non-nilpotent graph of a semigroup. Also, there is precisely one graph on 4 vertices that is not the upper non-nilpotent graph of a semigroup with 4 elements. This work also is a continuation of earlier work by Okniński, Riley and the first named author on (Malcev) nilpotent semigroups.

Torsion units in integral group rings of Janko simple groups

Using the Luthar--Passi method, we investigate the classical Zassenhaus conjecture for the normalized unit group of integral group rings of Janko sporadic simple groups. As a consequence, we obtain that the Gruenberg-Kegel graph of the Janko groups $J_1$, $J_2$ and $J_3$ is the same as that of the normalized unit group of their respective integral group ring.

Rational group algebras of finite groups: from idempotents to units of integral group rings

We give an explicit and character-free construction of a complete set of orthogonal primitive idempotents of a rational group algebra of a finite nilpotent group and a full description of the Wedderburn decomposition of such algebras. An immediate consequence is a well-known result of Roquette on the Schur indices of the simple components of group algebras of finite nilpotent groups. As an application, we obtain that the unit group of the integral group ring $\Z G$ of a finite nilpotent group $G$ has a subgroup of finite index that is generated by three nilpotent groups for which we have an explicit description of their generators. Another application is a new construction of free subgroups in the unit group. In all the constructions dealt with, pairs of subgroups $(H,K)$, called strong Shoda pairs, and explicit constructed central elements $e(G,H,K)$ play a crucial role. For arbitrary finite groups we prove that the primitive central idempotents of the rational group algebras are rational linear combinations of such $e(G,H,K)$, with $(H,K)$ strong Shoda pairs in subgroups of $G$.

Hyperbolicity of Semigroup Algebras II

In 1996 Jespers and Wang classified finite semigroups whose integral semigroup ring has finitely many units. In a recent paper, Iwaki-Juriaans-Souza Filho continued this line of research by partially classifying the finite semigroups whose rational semigroup algebra %over a field of characteristic zero, contains a ${\mathbb{Z}}$-order with hyperbolic unit group. In this paper we complete this classification by handling the case in which the semigroup is semi-simple.

Finitely presented algebras and groups defined by permutation relations

The class of finitely presented algebras over a field $K$ with a set of generators $a_{1},..., a_{n}$ and defined by homogeneous relations of the form $a_{1}a_{2}... a_{n} =a_{σ(a)} a_{σ(2)} ... a_{σ(n)}$, where $σ$ runs through a subset $H$ of the symmetric group $\Sym_{n}$ of degree $n$, is introduced. The emphasis is on the case of a cyclic subgroup $H$ of $\Sym_{n}$ of order $n$. A normal form of elements of the algebra is obtained. It is shown that the underlying monoid, defined by the same (monoid) presentation, has a group of fractions and this group is described. Properties of the algebra are derived. In particular, it follows that the algebra is a semiprimitive domain. Problems concerning the groups and algebras defined by arbitrary subgroups $H$ of $\Sym_{n}$ are proposed.

Antisymmetric Elements in Group Rings II

Let $R$ be a commutative ring, $G$ a group and $RG$ its group ring. Let $\vp : RG\to RG$ denote the $R$-linear extension of an involution $\vp$ defined on $G$. An element $x$ in $RG$ is said to be $\vp$-antisymmetric if $\vp (x) = -x$. A characterization is given of when the $\vp$-antisymmetric elements of $RG$ commute. This is a completion of earlier work.

Antisymmetric elements in group rings with an orientation morphism

Let $R$ be a commutative ring, $G$ a group and $RG$ its group ring. Let $ϕ_σ : RG\to RG$ denote the involution defined by $ϕ_σ (\sum r_{g}g) = \sum r_{g} σ(g) g^{-1}$, where $σ:G\to \{\pm 1\}$ is a group homomorphism (called an orientation morphism). An element $x$ in $RG$ is said to be antisymmetric if $ϕ_σ (x) =-x$. We give a full characterization of the groups $G$ and its orientations for which the antisymmetric elements of $RG$ commute.
