SIGMA and XTE observations of the soft X-ray transient XTEJ1755-324

We present observations of the X-ray transient XTEJ1755-324 performed during summer 1997 with the XTE satellite and with the SIGMA hard X-ray telescope onboard the GRANAT observatory. The source was first detected in soft X-rays with XTE on July 25 1997 with a rather soft X-ray spectrum and its outburst was monitored in soft X-rays up to November 1997. On September 16 it was first detected in hard X-rays by the French soft gamma ray telescope SIGMA during a Galactic Center observation. The flux was stronger on September 16 and 17 reaching a level of about 110 mCrab in the 40-80 keV energy band. On the same days the photon index of the spectrum was determined to be alpha =-2.3 +/- 0.9 (1 sigma error) while the 40-150 keV luminosity was about 8 x 10^{36} erg/s for a distance of 8.5 kpc. SIGMA and XTE results on this source indicate that this source had an ultrasoft-like state during its main outburst and a harder secondary outburst in September. These characteristics make the source similar to X-Nova Muscae 1991, a well known black hole candidate.

Anisotropic Illumination in AGNs. The reflected component. Comparison to hard X-ray spectra from Seyfert Galaxies

We calculate the reflection component predicted by the anisotropic illumination model of Henri & Petrucci 1997. This component appears to be more important than for isotropic models. The overall X/gamma spectrum is found to be strongly angle-dependent. When the accretion disc is seen with a nearly edge-on orientation the reflection hump is weak, while a face-on viewing angle leads to a proeminent reflection hump with an equivalent reflection coefficient R close to 50. Such reflection dominated Seyfert 1s galaxies are not observed. By fitting observed X/gamma spectra, we derive inclination angles of 70 degrees for MCG 8-11 -11 and 80 degrees for IC 4329a and NGC 4151. Although the model succeed in reproducing individual observed spectra, it requires all the Seyfert 1s observed in the X-ray band to be seen with large inclination angles. Such a situation is highly improbable. On the other hand, we show that the ionisation of a fair part of the reflecting disk could represent an interesting improvement of the model, consistent with the data and relaxing the constraints on the high energy cut-off in Seyfert galaxies.

SIGMA observations of X-ray Nova Velorum 1993 (GRS 1009-45)

We report on hard X-ray observations of X-ray Nova Velorum 1993 (GRS 1009-45) performed with the SIGMA coded mask X-ray telescope in January 1994. The source was clearly detected with a flux of about 60 mCrab in the 40-150 keV energy band during the two observations with a hard spectrum (alpha ~ - 1.9) extending up to ~ 150 keV. These observations confirm the duration of the activity of the source in hard X-rays over 100 days after the first maximum and suggest a spectral hardening which has already been observed in Nova Muscae. These and other characteristics found in these observations strengthen the case for this Nova to be a black hole candidate similar to Nova Muscae.

Properties Of The Hard X-ray Radiation From The Black Hole Candidates: Cygnus X-1 And 1E1740.7-2942

The entire dataset of the GRANAT/SIGMA observations of Cyg X-1 and 1E1740.7-2942 in 1990-1994 was analyzed in order to search for correlations between primary observational characteristics of the hard X-ray (40-200 keV) emission - hard X-ray luminosity, hardness of the spectrum (quantified in terms of the best-fit thermal bremsstrahlung temperature kT) and the RMS of short-term flux variations. Although no strict point-to-point correlations were detected certain general tendencies are evident. It was found that for Cyg X-1 the spectral hardness is in general positively correlated with relative amplitude of short-term variability. The correlation of similar kind was found for X-ray transient GRO J0422+32 (X-ray Nova Persei 1992). For both sources an approximate correlation between kT and L_X was found. At low hard X-ray luminosity - below 10E37 erg/sec - kT increases with L_X. At higher luminosity the spectral hardness depends weaker or does not depend at all on the hard X-ray luminosity. The low luminosity end of these approximate correlations (low kT and low RMS) corresponds to extended episodes of very low hard X-ray flux occurred during SIGMA observations.

An Anisotropic Illumination Model of Seyfert I Galaxies

We develop a self-consistent model of Seyfert galaxies continuum emission. High energy emission is produced by Inverse Compton process on soft photons emitted as thermal radiation by the accretion disk. Thermal emission is, at turn, entirely due to reprocessing of the impinging high energy photons. The high energy source is assumed to be an optically thin plasma of highly relativistic leptons ($e^+-e^-$), at rest at a given height on the disk axis. This warm source could be the result of a strong schock between an abortive jet coming from the disk and the interstellar medium. Such a geometry is highly anisotropic, which has a strong influence on Compton process. Monte-Carlo simulations allow the superposition of a reflected component (the so-called high energy bump) to the UV to X-ray spectrum obtained with our model, leading us to a first comparison with observations by fitting the high energy spectra of NGC4151 and IC4329a.

Observational constraints on annihilation sites in 1E 1740.7-2942 and Nova Muscae

The region of the Galactic center contains several sources which demonstrate their activity at various wavelengths and particularly above several hundred keV. Escape of positrons from such a source or several sources into the interstellar medium, where they slow down and annihilate, can account for the 511 keV narrow line observed from this direction. 1E 1740.7-2942 object has been proposed as the most likely candidate to be responsible for this variable source of positrons. Besides, Nova Muscae shows a spectrum which is consistent with Comptonization by a thermal plasma kT<100 keV in its hard X-ray part, while a relatively narrow annihilation line observed by SIGMA on January 20-21, 1991 implies that positrons annihilate in a much colder medium. We estimate the electron number density and the size of the emitting regions suggesting that annihilation features observed by SIGMA from Nova Muscae and 1E 1740.7-2942 are due to the positron slowing down and annihilation in thermal plasma. We show that in the case of Nova Muscae the observed radiation is coming from a pair plasma stream, N(e+)~N(e-), rather than from a gas cloud. We argue that two models are probably relevant to the 1E source: annihilation in (hydrogen) plasma N(e+)<~N(e-) at rest, and annihilation in the pair plasma stream, which involves matter from the source environment.

Positron propagation in semi-relativistic plasmas: particle spectra and the annihilation line shape

By solving the Fokker-Planck equation directly we examine effects of annihilation, particle escape and injection on the form of a steady-state positron distribution in thermal hydrogen plasmas with $kT<m_ec^2$. We show that the escape of positrons in the form of electron-positron pairs and/or pair plasma has an effect on the positron distribution causing, in some cases, a strong deviation from a Maxwellian. Additionally, we present accurate formulas for energy exchange rates, and losses due to Coulomb scattering, bremsstrahlung, and Compton scattering in the Klein-Nishina regime. Suggesting that annihilation features observed by SIGMA telescope from Nova Muscae and the 1E 1740.7-2942 are due to the positron/electron slowing down and annihilation in thermal plasma, the electron number density and the size of the emitting regions have been estimated. We show that in the case of Nova Muscae the observed radiation is coming from a pair plasma stream ($n_{e^+}\approx n_{e^-}$) rather than from a gas cloud. We argue that two models are probably relevant to the 1E 1740.7-2942 source: annihilation in (hydrogen) plasma $n_{e^+}\la n_{e^-}$ at rest, and annihilation in the pair plasma stream, which involves matter from the source environment.

Two Distinct Modes In The Low (Hard) State Of Cyg X-1 And 1E1740-294

The entire dataset of the GRANAT/SIGMA observations of Cyg X-1 and 1E1740.7-294 in 1990-1994 was analyzed in order to search for correlations between primary observational characteristics of the hard X-ray emission - hard X-ray luminosity L_X, hardness of the spectrum (quantified in terms of the best fit thermal bremsstrahlung temperature kT) and the RMS of short term flux variations. Two distinct modes of the kT vs. L_X dependence were found for both sources. At low luminosity - below the level corresponding approximately to the gamma_1 state of Cyg X-1 - the kT increases as the L_X increases. Above the luminosity level of ~1.2L_gamma_1 the spectrum hardness is nearly constant (kT ~150 keV) and does not depend on the luminosity. In the case of Cyg X-1 the correlation of similar kind was found between the spectrum hardness and RMS of the short term flux variations. The increase of the kT, corresponding to the increasing branch on the kT vs. L_X diagram, is accompanied with increase of the RMS from few percent level to ~10-15%. Further increase of the RMS is not accompanied with change of the kT and does not correlate with changes in the luminosity.
