Baecklund transformations and Baxter's Q-operator

The course of 5 lectures given at the seminar "Integrable Systems: from Classical to Quantum" (Universite de Montreal, Jul 26 -- Aug 6, 1999) contains a detailed comment on the recently discovered (Gaudin-Pasquier, 1992) connection between Baecklund transformations in the theory of classical integrable systems on one hand, and Baxter's Q-operator for quantum integrable systems, on the other hand. We restrict our attention to the systems with finite number of degrees of freedom. Our main illustrative example is the periodic Toda lattice. We present a general construction of Q-operator for models governed by the SL(2)-invariant R-matrix and apply it to our example. We discuss also applications of BT and Q-operators to the separation of variables and theory of special functions.

Quantum Backlund transformation for the integrable DST model

For the integrable case of the discrete self-trapping (DST) model we construct a Backlund transformation. The dual Lax matrix and the corresponding dual Backlund transformation are also found and studied. The quantum analog of the Backlund transformation (Q-operator) is constructed as the trace of a monodromy matrix with an infinite-dimensional auxiliary space. We present the Q-operator as an explicit integral operator as well as describe its action on the monomial basis. As a result we obtain a family of integral equations for multivariable polynomial eigenfunctions of the quantum integrable DST model. These eigenfunctions are special functions of the Heun class which is beyond the hypergeometric class. The found integral equations are new and they shall provide a basis for efficient analytical and numerical studies of such complicated functions.

Canonicity of Baecklund transformation: r-matrix approach. I

For the Hamiltonian integrable systems governed by SL(2)-invariant r-matrix (such as Heisenberg magnet, Toda lattice, nonlinear Schroedinger equation) a general procedure for constructing Baecklund transformation is proposed. The corresponding BT is shown to preserve the Poisson bracket. The proof is given by a direct calculation using the r-matrix expression for the Poisson bracket.

Canonicity of Baecklund transformation: r-matrix approach. II

This is the second part of the paper devoted to the general proof of canonicity of Baecklund transformation (BT) for a Hamiltonian integrable system governed by SL(2)-invariant r-matrix. Introducing an extended phase space from which the original one is obtained by imposing a 1st kind constraint, we are able to prove the canonicity of BT in a new way. The new proof allows to explain naturally the fact why the gauge transformation matrix M associated to the BT has the same structure as the Lax operator L. The technique is illustrated on the example of the DST chain.

Few remarks on Baecklund transformations for many-body systems

Using the n-particle periodic Toda lattice and the relativistic generalization due to Ruijsenaars of the elliptic Calogero-Moser system as examples, we revise the basic properties of the Baecklund transformations (BT's) from the Hamiltonian point of view. The analogy between BT and Baxter's quantum Q-operator pointed out by Pasquier and Gaudin is exploited to produce a conjugated variable mu for the parameter lambda of the BT B_lambda such that mu belongs to the spectrum of the Lax operator L(lambda). As a consequence, the generating function of the composition of n BT's gives rise also to another canonical transformation separating variables for the model. For the Toda lattice the dual BT parametrized by mu is introduced.

Generating function of correlators in the sl_2 Gaudin model

For the sl_2 Gaudin model (degenerated quantum integrable XXX spin chain) an exponential generating function of correlators is calculated explicitely. The calculation relies on the Gauss decomposition for the SL_2 loop group. From the generating function a new explicit expression for the correlators is derived from which the determinant formulas for the norms of Bethe eigenfunctions due to Richardson and Gaudin are obtained.

Separation of variables for the Ruijsenaars system

We construct a separation of variables for the classical n-particle Ruijsenaars system (the relativistic analog of the elliptic Calogero-Moser system). The separated coordinates appear as the poles of the properly normalised eigenvector (Baker-Akhiezer function) of the corresponding Lax matrix. Two different normalisations of the BA functions are analysed. The canonicity of the separated variables is verified with the use of r-matrix technique. The explicit expressions for the generating function of the separating canonical transform are given in the simplest cases n=2 and n=3. Taking nonrelativistic limit we also construct a separation of variables for the elliptic Calogero-Moser system.

Algebraic Bethe Ansatz for XYZ Gaudin model

The eigenvectors of the Hamiltionians of the XYZ Gaudin model are constructed by means of the algebraic Bethe Ansatz. The construction is based on the quasi-classical limit of the corresponding results for the inhomogeneous higher spin eight vertex model.

Separation of variables in the $A_2$ type Jack polynomials

An integral operator $M$ is constructed performing a separation of variables for the 3-particle quantum Calogero-Sutherland (CS) model. Under the action of $M$ the CS eigenfunctions (Jack polynomials for the root system $A_2$) are transformed to the factorized form $ϕ(y_1)ϕ(y_2)$, where $ϕ(y)$ is a trigonometric polynomial of one variable expressed in terms of the ${}_3F_2$ hypergeometric series. The inversion of $M$ produces a new integral representation for the $A_2$ Jack polynomials.

Separation of Variables. New Trends.

The review is based on the author's papers since 1985 in which a new approach to the separation of variables (\SoV) has being developed. It is argued that \SoV, understood generally enough, could be the most universal tool to solve integrable models of the classical and quantum mechanics. It is shown that the standard construction of the action-angle variables from the poles of the Baker-Akhiezer function can be interpreted as a variant of \SoV, and moreover, for many particular models it has a direct quantum counterpart. The list of the models discussed includes XXX and XYZ magnets, Gaudin model, Nonlinear Schrödinger equation, $SL(3)$-invariant magnetic chain. New results for the 3-particle quantum Calogero-Moser system are reported.

Dynamical $r$-matrices for the Elliptic Calogero-Moser Model

For the integrable $N$-particle Calogero-Moser system with elliptic potential it is shown that the Lax operator found by Krichever possesses a classical $r$-matrix structure. The $r$-matrix is a natural generalisation of the matrix found recently by Avan and Talon (hep-th/9210128) for the trigonometric potential. The $r$-matrix depends on the spectral parameter and only half of the dynamical variables (particles' coordinates). It satisfies a generalized Yang-Baxter equation involving another dynamical matrix.

Separation of variables in the quantum integrable models related to the Yangian Y[sl(3)]

There being no precise definition of the quantum integrability, the separability of variables can serve as its practical substitute. For any quantum integrable model generated by the Yangian Y[sl(3)] the canonical coordinates and the conjugated operators are constructed which satisfy the ``quantum characteristic equation'' (quantum counterpart of the spectral algebraic curve for the L operator). The coordinates constructed provide a local separation of variables. The conditions are enlisted which are necessary for the global separation of variables to take place.

Separation of Variables in the Classical Integrable SL(3) Magnetic Chain

There are two fundamental problems studied by the theory of hamiltonian integrable systems: integration of equations of motion, and construction of action-angle variables. The third problem, however, should be added to the list: separation of variables. Though much simpler than two others, it has important relations to the quantum integrability. Separation of variables is constructed for the $SL(3)$ magnetic chain --- an example of integrable model associated to a nonhyperelliptic algebraic curve.

Quantum Inverse Scattering Method. Selected Topics

Four lectures given at Nankai Institute of Mathematics, Tianjin, China, 5--13 April 1991 present an elementary introduction into the quantum integrable models aimed for mathematical physicists and mathematicians. The stress is made on the algebraic aspects of the theory and the problem of determining the spectrum of quantum integrals of motion. The XXX magnetic chain is used as the basic example. Two lectures are devoted to a detailed exposition of the Functional Bethe Ansatz --- a new technique alternative to the Algebraic Bethe Ansatz --- and its relation to the separation of variable method. A possibility to extend FBA to the $SL(3)$ is discussed.

Algebraic Structures Related to Reflection Equations

Quadratic algebras related to the reflection equations are introduced. They are quantum group comodule algebras. The quantum group $F_q(GL(2))$ is taken as the example. The properties of the algebras (center, representations, realizations, real forms, fusion procedure etc) as well as the generalizations are discussed.
