Eigenvalue correlations in non-Hermitean symplectic random matrices

Correlation function of complex eigenvalues of N by N random matrices drawn from non-Hermitean random matrix ensemble of symplectic symmetry is given in terms of a quaternion determinant. Spectral properties of Gaussian ensembles are studied in detail in the regimes of weak and strong non-Hermiticity.

Limits of the dynamical approach to non-linear response of mesoscopic systems

We have considered the nonlinear response of mesoscopic systems of non-interacting electrons to the time-dependent external field. In this consideration the inelastic processes have been neglected and the electron thermalization occurs due to the electron exchange with the reservoirs. We have demonstrated that the diagrammatic technique based on the method of analytical continuation or on the Keldysh formalism is capable to describe the heating automatically. The corresponding diagrams contain a novel element, {\it the loose diffuson}. We have shown the equivalence of such a diagrammatic technique to the solution to the kinetic equation for the electron energy distribution function. We have identified two classes of problems with different behavior under ac pumping. In one class of problems (persistent current fluctuations, Kubo conductance) the observable depends on the electron energy distribution renormalized by heating. In another class of problems (Landauer conductance) the observable is insensitive to heating and depends on the temperature of electron reservoirs. As examples of such problems we have considered in detail the persistent current fluctuations under ac pumping and two types of conductance measurements (Landauer conductance and Kubo conductance) that behave differently under ac pumping.

Spectra of massive QCD Dirac Operators from Random Matrix Theory: all three chiral symmetry breaking patterns

The microscopic spectral eigenvalue correlations of QCD Dirac operators in the presence of dynamical fermions are calculated within the framework of Random Matrix Theory (RMT). Our approach treats the low--energy correlation functions of all three chiral symmetry breaking patterns (labeled by the Dyson index $β=1,2$ and 4) on the same footing, offering a unifying description of massive QCD Dirac spectra. RMT universality is explicitly proven for all three symmetry classes and the results are compared to the available lattice data for $β=4$.

Spectra of massive and massless QCD Dirac operators: A novel link

We show that integrable structure of chiral random matrix models incorporating global symmetries of QCD Dirac operators (labeled by the Dyson index beta=1,2, and 4) leads to emergence of a connection relation between the spectral statistics of massive and massless Dirac operators. This novel link established for beta-fold degenerate massive fermions is used to explicitly derive (and prove the random matrix universality of) statistics of low--lying eigenvalues of QCD Dirac operators in the presence of SU(2) massive fermions in the fundamental representation (beta=1) and SU(N_c >= 2) massive adjoint fermions (beta=4). Comparison with available lattice data for SU(2) dynamical staggered fermions reveals a good agreement.

Random matrices and the replica method

Recent developments [Kamenev and Mezard, cond-mat/9901110, cond-mat/9903001; Yurkevich and Lerner, cond-mat/9903025; Zirnbauer, cond-mat/9903338] have revived a discussion about applicability of the replica approach to description of spectral fluctuations in the context of random matrix theory and beyond. The present paper, concentrating on invariant non-Gaussian random matrix ensembles with orthogonal, unitary and symplectic symmetries, aims to demonstrate that both the bosonic and the fermionic replicas are capable of reproducing nonperturbative fluctuation formulas for spectral correlation functions in entire energy scale, including the self-correlation of energy levels, provided no sigma-model mapping is used.

Topological universality of level dynamics in quasi-one-dimensional disordered conductors

Nonperturbative, in inverse Thouless conductance 1/g, corrections to distributions of level velocities and level curvatures in quasi-one-dimensional disordered conductors with a topology of a ring subject to a constant vector potential are studied within the framework of the instanton approximation of nonlinear sigma-model. It is demonstrated that a global character of the perturbation reveals the universal features of the level dynamics. The universality shows up in the form of weak topological oscillations of the magnitude ~ exp(-g) covering the main bodies of the densities of level velocities and level curvatures. The period of discovered universal oscillations does not depend on microscopic parameters of conductor, and is only determined by the global symmetries of the Hamiltonian before and after the perturbation was applied. We predict the period of topological oscillations to be 4/(pi)^2 for the distribution function of level curvatures in orthogonal symmetry class, and 3^(1/2)/(pi) for the distribution of level velocities in unitary and symplectic symmetry classes.

Parametric level statistics in random matrix theory: Exact solution

An exact solution to the problem of parametric level statistics in non-Gaussian ensembles of N by N Hermitian random matrices with either soft or strong level confinement is formulated within the framework of the orthogonal polynomial technique. Being applied to random matrices with strong level confinement, the solution obtained leads to emergence of a new connection relation that makes a link between the parametric level statistics and the scalar two-point kernel in the thermodynamic limit.

Higher order parametric level statistics in disordered systems

Higher order parametric level correlations in disordered systems with broken time-reversal symmetry are studied by mapping the problem onto a model of coupled Hermitian random matrices. Closed analytical expression is derived for parametric density-density correlation function which corresponds to a perturbation of disordered system by a multicomponent flux.

Spectra of large random matrices: A method of study

A formalism for study of spectral correlations in non-Gaussian, unitary invariant ensembles of large random matrices with strong level confinement is reviewed. It is based on the Shohat method in the theory of orthogonal polynomials. The approach presented is equally suitable for description of both local and global spectral characteristics, thereby providing an overall look at the phenomenon of spectral universality in Random Matrix Theory.

Two-band random matrices

Spectral correlations in unitary invariant, non-Gaussian ensembles of large random matrices possessing an eigenvalue gap are studied within the framework of the orthogonal polynomial technique. Both local and global characteristics of spectra are directly reconstructed from the recurrence equation for orthogonal polynomials associated with a given random matrix ensemble. It is established that an eigenvalue gap does not affect the local eigenvalue correlations which follow the universal sine and the universal multicritical laws in the bulk and soft-edge scaling limits, respectively. By contrast, global smoothed eigenvalue correlations do reflect the presence of a gap, and are shown to satisfy a new universal law exhibiting a sharp dependence on the odd/even dimension of random matrices whose spectra are bounded. In the case of unbounded spectrum, the corresponding universal `density-density' correlator is conjectured to be generic for chaotic systems with a forbidden gap and broken time reversal symmetry.

Random matrix models with log-singular level confinement: method of fictitious fermions

Joint distribution function of N eigenvalues of U(N) invariant random-matrix ensemble can be interpreted as a probability density to find N fictitious non-interacting fermions to be confined in a one-dimensional space. Within this picture a general formalism is developed to study the eigenvalue correlations in non-Gaussian ensembles of large random matrices possessing non-monotonic, log-singular level confinement. An effective one-particle Schroedinger equation for wave-functions of fictitious fermions is derived. It is shown that eigenvalue correlations are completely determined by the Dyson's density of states and by the parameter of the logarithmic singularity. Closed analytical expressions for the two-point kernel in the origin, bulk, and soft-edge scaling limits are deduced in a unified way, and novel universal correlations are predicted near the end point of the single spectrum support.

Universality in invariant random-matrix models: Existence near the soft edge

We consider two non-Gaussian ensembles of large Hermitian random matrices with strong level confinement and show that near the soft edge of the spectrum both scaled density of states and eigenvalue correlations follow so-called Airy laws inherent in Gaussian unitary ensemble. This suggests that the invariant one-matrix models should display universal eigenvalue correlations in the soft-edge scaling limit.

Novel universal correlations in invariant random-matrix models

We show that eigenvalue correlations in unitary-invariant ensembles of large random matrices adhere to novel universal laws that only depend on a multicriticality of the bulk density of states near the soft edge of the spectrum. Our consideration is based on the previously unknown observation that genuine density of states and n-point correlation function are completely determined by the Dyson's density analytically continued onto the whole real axis.

Eigenfunctions of electrons in weakly disordered quantum dots: Crossover between orthogonal and unitary symmetries

A one-parameter random matrix model is proposed for describing the statistics of the local amplitudes and phases of electron eigenfunctions in a mesoscopic quantum dot in an arbitrary magnetic field. Comparison of the statistics obtained with recent results derived from first principles within the framework of supersymmetry technique allows to identify a transition parameter with real microscopic characteristics of the problem. The random-matrix model is applied to the statistics of the height of the resonance conductance of a quantum dot in the regime of the crossover between orthogonal and unitary symmetry classes.

Theory of random matrices with strong level confinement

Unitary ensembles of large N x N random matrices with a non-Gaussian probability distribution P[H] ~ exp{-TrV[H]} are studied using a theory of polynomials orthogonal with respect to exponential weights. Asymptotically exact expressions for density of levels, one- and two-point Green's functions are calculated. We show that in the large-N limit the properly rescaled local eigenvalue correlations are independent of P[H] while global smoothed connected correlations depend on P[H] only through the endpoints of spectrum. We also establish previously unknown intimate connection between structure of Szegö function entering strong polynomial asymptotics and mean-field equation by Dyson.

Theory of random matrices with strong level confinement: orthogonal polynomial approach

Strongly non-Gaussian ensembles of large random matrices possessing unitary symmetry and logarithmic level repulsion are studied both in presence and absence of hard edge in their energy spectra. Employing a theory of polynomials orthogonal with respect to exponential weights we calculate with asymptotic accuracy the two-point kernel over all distance scale, and show that in the limit of large dimensions of random matrices the properly rescaled local eigenvalue correlations are independent of level confinement while global smoothed connected correlations depend on confinement potential only through the endpoints of spectrum. We also obtain exact expressions for density of levels, one- and two-point Green's functions, and prove that new universal local relationship exists for suitably normalized and rescaled connected two-point Green's function. Connection between structure of Szegö function entering strong polynomial asymptotics and mean-field equation is traced.

Unitary Random-Matrix Ensemble with Governable Level Confinement

A family of unitary $α$-Ensembles of random matrices with governable confinement potential $V(x) ~ |x|^α$ is studied employing exact results of the theory of non-classical orthogonal polynomials. The density of levels, two-point kernel, locally rescaled two-level cluster function and smoothed connected correlations between the density of eigenvalues are calculated for strong ($α> 1$) and border ($α= 1$) level confinement. It is shown that the density of states is a smooth function for $α> 1$, and has a well-pronounced peak at the band center for $α<= 1$. The case of border level confinement associated with transition point $α= 1$ is reduced to the exactly solvable Pollaczek random-matrix ensemble. Unlike the density of states, all the two-point correlators remain (after proper rescaling) to be universal down to and including $α= 1$.
