Electron dynamics mediate the water-carbon π bond

The intermolecular interaction between a water molecule and the electrons in aromatic π systems--the water-π bond--lies at the heart of many chemical processes, yet its properties remain challenging to measure experimentally and model computationally. Infrared spectroscopy of pyrene anions hydrated by a single water molecule reveals vibrational and electronic motions that are often hidden in condensed phase measurements. Results from new machine-learning approaches to potentials and dipole moments show that the electron dynamics of the aromatic π cloud quench signals from some of water's vibrations and amplify others. The observed interplay between electronic and vibrational motions has general implications for modeling intermolecular interactions between water and aromatic systems in clusters, solutions, and at interfaces.

A Biochemical Logic Approach to Biomarker-Activated Drug Release

The present study aims at integrating drug-releasing materials with signal-processing biocomputing systems. Enzymes alanine transaminase (ALT) and aspartate transaminase (AST)---biomarkers for liver injury---were logically processed by a biocatalytic cascade realizing Boolean AND gate. Citrate produced in the system was used to trigger a drug-mimicking release from alginate microspheres. In order to differentiate low vs. high concentration signals, the microspheres were coated with a protective shell composed of layer-by-layer adsorbed poly(L-lysine) and alginate. The alginate core of the microspheres was prepared from (Fe3+)-cross-linked alginate loaded with rhodamine 6G dye mimicking a drug. Dye release from the core occurred only when both biomarkers, ALT and AST, appeared at their high pathophysiological concentrations jointly indicative of liver injury. The signal-triggered response was studied at the level of a single microsphere, yielding information on the dye release kinetics.

Optimization of Enzymatic Biochemical Logic for Noise Reduction and Scalability: How Many Biocomputing Gates Can Be Interconnected in a Circuit?

We report an experimental evaluation of the "input-output surface" for a biochemical AND gate. The obtained data are modeled within the rate-equation approach, with the aim to map out the gate function and cast it in the language of logic variables appropriate for analysis of Boolean logic for scalability. In order to minimize "analog" noise, we consider a theoretical approach for determining an optimal set for the process parameters to minimize "analog" noise amplification for gate concatenation. We establish that under optimized conditions, presently studied biochemical gates can be concatenated for up to order 10 processing steps. Beyond that, new paradigms for avoiding noise build-up will have to be developed. We offer a general discussion of the ideas and possible future challenges for both experimental and theoretical research for advancing scalable biochemical computing.

Error Correction and Digitalization Concepts in Biochemical Computing

We offer a theoretical design of new systems that show promise for digital biochemical computing, including realizations of error correction by utilizing redundancy, as well as signal rectification. The approach includes information processing using encoded DNA sequences, DNAzyme biocatalyzed reactions and the use of DNA-functionalized magnetic nanoparticles. Digital XOR and NAND logic gates and copying (fanout) are designed using the same components.

Supersplit Supersymmetry

The possible existence of an exponentially large number of vacua in string theory behooves one to consider possibilities beyond our traditional notions of naturalness. Such an approach to electroweak physics was recently used in "Split Supersymmetry", a model which shares some successes and cures some ills of traditional weak-scale supersymmetry by raising the masses of scalar superpartners significantly above a TeV. Here we suggest an extension - we raise, in addition to the scalars, the gaugino and higgsino masses to much higher scales. In addition to maintaining many of the successes of Split Supersymmetry - electroweak precision, flavor-changing neutral currents and CP violation, dimension-4 and 5 proton decay - the model also allows for natural Planck-scale supersymmetry breaking, solves the gluino-decay problem, and resolves the coincidence problem with respect to gaugino and Higgs masses. The lack of unification of couplings suggests a natural solution to possible problems from dimension-6 proton decay. While this model has no weak-scale dark matter candidate, a Peccei-Quinn axion or small black holes can be consistently incorporated in this framework.

The Littlest Higgs

We present an economical theory of natural electroweak symmetry breaking, generalizing an approach based on deconstruction. This theory is the smallest extension of the Standard Model to date that stabilizes the electroweak scale with a naturally light Higgs and weakly coupled new physics at TeV energies. The Higgs is one of a set of pseudo Goldstone bosons in an $SU(5)/SO(5)$ nonlinear sigma model. The symmetry breaking scale $f$ is around a TeV, with the cutoff $Λ\lsim 4πf \sim $ 10 TeV. A single electroweak doublet, the ``little Higgs'', is automatically much lighter than the other pseudo Goldstone bosons. The quartic self-coupling for the little Higgs is generated by the gauge and Yukawa interactions with a natural size $O(g^2,λ_t^2)$, while the top Yukawa coupling generates a negative mass squared triggering electroweak symmetry breaking. Beneath the TeV scale the effective theory is simply the minimal Standard Model. The new particle content at TeV energies consists of one set of spin one bosons with the same quantum numbers as the electroweak gauge bosons, an electroweak singlet quark with charge 2/3, and an electroweak triplet scalar. One loop quadratically divergent corrections to the Higgs mass are cancelled by interactions with these additional particles.

The Minimal Moose for a Little Higgs

Recently a new class of theories of electroweak symmetry breaking have been constructed. These models, based on deconstruction and the physics of theory space, provide the first alternative to weak-scale supersymmetry with naturally light Higgs fields and perturbative new physics at the TeV scale. The Higgs is light because it is a pseudo-Goldstone boson, and the quadratically divergent contributions to the Higgs mass are cancelled by new TeV scale ``partners'' of the {\em same} statistics. In this paper we present the minimal theory space model of electroweak symmetry breaking, with two sites and four link fields, and the minimal set of fermions. There are very few parameters and degrees of freedom beyond the Standard Model. Below a TeV, we have the Standard Model with two light Higgs doublets, and an additional complex scalar weak triplet and singlet. At the TeV scale, the new particles that cancel the 1-loop quadratic divergences in the Higgs mass are revealed. The entire Higgs potential needed for electroweak symmetry breaking--the quartic couplings as well as the familiar negative mass squared--can be generated by the top Yukawa coupling, providing a novel link between the physics of flavor and electroweak symmetry breaking.

Linearized Gravity in Brane Backgrounds

A treatment of linearized gravity is given in the Randall-Sundrum background. The graviton propagator is found in terms of the scalar propagator, for which an explicit integral expression is provided. This reduces to the four-dimensional propagator at long distances along the brane, and provides estimates of subleading corrections. Asymptotics of the propagator off the brane yields exponential falloff of gravitational fields due to matter on the brane. This implies that black holes bound to the brane have a "pancake"-like shape in the extra dimension, and indicates validity of a perturbative treatment off the brane. Some connections with the AdS/CFT correspondence are described.

Yukawa Deflected Gauge Mediation in Four Dimensions

We construct a four dimensional realization of a higher dimensional model, Yukawa deflected gauge mediation, in which supersymmetry breaking is communicated to the visible sector through both gauge and Yukawa interactions. The reduction to four dimensions is achieved by `deconstructing' or `latticizing' the extra dimension. Three sites (gauge groups) are sufficient to reproduce the spectrum of the higher dimensional model. The characteristic features of Yukawa deflected gauge mediation, in particular, alignment of squarks and quarks, and a natural solution to the mu problem, carry over to the deconstructed version of the model. We comment on the implications of our results for a solution of the mu problem in the context of deconstructed gaugino mediation.

Heavy Thresholds, Slepton Masses and the $μ$ Term in Anomaly Mediated Supersymmetry Breaking

The effects of heavy mass thresholds on anomaly-mediated soft supersymmetry breaking terms are discussed. While heavy thresholds completely decouple to lowest order in the supersymmetry breaking, it is argued that they do affect the breaking terms at higher orders. The relevant contributions typically occur at lower order in the loop expansion compared to purely anomaly mediated contributions. The non decoupling contributions may be used to render models in which the only source of supersymmetry breaking is anomaly mediation viable, by generating positive contributions to the sleptons' masses squared. They can also be used to generate acceptable mu- and B-terms.

Lattice Fluid Dynamics from Perfect Discretizations of Continuum Flows

We use renormalization group methods to derive equations of motion for large scale variables in fluid dynamics. The large scale variables are averages of the underlying continuum variables over cubic volumes, and naturally live on a lattice. The resulting lattice dynamics represents a perfect discretization of continuum physics, i.e. grid artifacts are completely eliminated. Perfect equations of motion are derived for static, slow flows of incompressible, viscous fluids. For Hagen-Poiseuille flow in a channel with square cross section the equations reduce to a perfect discretization of the Poisson equation for the velocity field with Dirichlet boundary conditions. The perfect large scale Poisson equation is used in a numerical simulation, and is shown to represent the continuum flow exactly. For non-square cross sections we use a numerical iterative procedure to derive flow equations that are approximately perfect.

Supersymmetric Partners of Oblique Corrections

We discuss a potential new probe of supersymmetric physics. In particular, we discuss the possibility of measuring hard supersymmetry violation which occurs at one loop through "super-oblique" corrections to the gauge and gaugino propagators. In models with heavy scalar partners, or with many gauge-charged particles which participate in supersymmetry breaking, these effects can be substantial due to logarithmic and multiplicity factor enhancements.
