The effective mass of two--dimensional 3He

We use structural information from diffusion Monte Carlo calculations for two--dimensional 3He to calculate the effective mass. Static effective interactions are constructed from the density-- and spin structure functions using sumrules. We find that both spin-- and density-- fluctuations contribute about equally to the effective mass. Our results show, in agreement with recent experiments, a flattening of the single--particle self--energy with increasing density, which eventually leads to a divergent effective mass.

Layer- and bulk roton excitations of 4He in porous media

We examine the energetics of bulk and layer-roton excitations of 4He in various porous medial such as aerogel, Geltech, or Vycor, in order to find out what conclusions can be drawn from experiments on the energetics about the physisorption mechanism. The energy of the layer-roton minimum depends sensitively on the substrate strength, thus providing a mechanism for a direct measurement of this quantity. On the other hand, bulk-like roton excitations are largely independent of the interaction between the medium and the helium atoms, but the dependence of their energy on the degree of filling reflects the internal structure of the matrix and can reveal features of 4He at negative pressures. While bulk-like rotons are very similar to their true bulk counterparts, the layer modes are not in close relation to two-dimensional rotons and should be regarded as a third, completely independent kind of excitation.

Excitations in confined helium

We design models for helium in matrices like aerogel, Vycor or Geltech from a manifestly microscopic point of view. For that purpose, we calculate the dynamic structure function of 4He on Si substrates and between two Si walls as a function of energy, momentum transfer, and the scattering angle. The angle--averaged results are in good agreement with the neutron scattering data; the remaining differences can be attributed to the simplified model used here for the complex pore structure of the materials. A focus of the present work is the detailed identification of coexisting layer modes and bulk--like excitations, and, in the case of thick films, ripplon excitations. Involving essentially two--dimensional motion of atoms, the layer modes are sensitive to the scattering angle.

A rapidly converging algorithm for solving the Kohn-Sham and related equations in electronic structure theory

We describe a rapidly converging algorithm for solving the Kohn--Sham equations and equations of similar structure that appear frequently in calculations of the structure of inhomogeneous electronic many--body systems. The algorithm has its roots the Hohenberg-Kohn theorem and solves directly for the electron density; single--particle wave functions are only used as auxiliary quantities. The method has been implemented for symmetric ``slabs'' of jellium as well as for spherical jellium clusters. Starting from very rough guesses for the initial electron density, convergence is reached within a few iterations. The iterations are driven by the static electric susceptibility.

Single Particle and Fermi Liquid Properties of He-3/--He-4 Mixtures: A Microscopic Analysis

We calculate microscopically the properties of the dilute He-3 component in a He-3/--He-4 mixture. These depend on both, the dominant interaction between the impurity atom and the background, and the Fermi liquid contribution due to the interaction between the constituents of the He-3 component. We first calculate the dynamic structure function of a He-3 impurity atom moving in He-3. From that we obtain the excitation spectrum and the momentum dependent effective mass. The pole strength of this excitation mode is strongly reduced from the free particle value in agreement with experiments; part of the strength is distributed over high frequency excitations. Above k > 1.7$Å$^{-1}$ the motion of the impurity is damped due to the decay into a roton and a low energy impurity mode. Next we determine the Fermi--Liquid interaction between He-4 atoms and calculate the pressure-- and concentration dependence of the effective mass, magnetic susceptibility, and the He-3--He-3 scattering phase shifts. The calculations are based on a dynamic theory that uses, as input, effective interactions provided by the Fermi hypernetted--chain theory. The relationship between both theories is discussed. Our theoretical effective masses agree well with recent measurements by Yorozu et al. (Phys. Rev. B 48, 9660 (1993)) as well as those by R. Simons and R. M. Mueller (Czekoslowak Journal of Physics Suppl. 46, 201 (1996)), but our analysis suggests a new extrapolation to the zero-concentration limit. With that effective mass we also find a good agreement with the measured Landau parameter F_0^a.

Scattering of He-3 Atoms from He-4 Surfaces

We develop a first principles, microscopic theory of impurity atom scattering from inhomogeneous quantum liquids such as adsorbed films, slabs, or clusters of He-4. The theory is built upon a quantitative, microscopic description of the ground state of both the host liquid as well as the impurity atom. Dynamic effects are treated by allowing all ground-state correlation functions to be time-dependent. Our description includes both the elastic and inelastic coupling of impurity motion to the excitations of the host liquid. As a specific example, we study the scattering of He-3 atoms from adsorbed He-4 films. We examine the dependence of ``quantum reflection'' on the substrate, and the consequences of impurity bound states, resonances, and background excitations for scattering properties. A thorough analysis of the theoretical approach and the physical circumstances point towards the essential role played by inelastic processes which determine almost exclusively the reflection probabilities. The coupling to impurity resonances within the film leads to a visible dependence of the reflection coefficient on the direction of the impinging particle.

Quantum sticking, scattering and transmission of 4He atoms from superfluid 4He surfaces

We develop a microscopic theory of the scattering, transmission, and sticking of 4He atoms impinging on a superfluid 4He slab at near normal incidence, and inelastic neutron scattering from the slab. The theory includes coupling between different modes and allows for inelastic processes. We find a number of essential aspects that must be observed in a physically meaningful and reliable theory of atom transmission and scattering; all are connected with multiparticle scattering, particularly the possibility of energy loss. These processes are (a) the coupling to low-lying (surface) excitations (ripplons/third sound) which is manifested in a finite imaginary part of the self energy, and (b) the reduction of the strength of the excitation in the maxon/roton region.

Concentration Dependence of the Effective Mass of He-3 Atoms in He-3/He-4 Mixtures

Recent measurements by Yorozu et al. (S. Yorozu, H. Fukuyama, and H. Ishimoto, Phys. Rev. B 48, 9660 (1993)) as well as by Simons and Mueller (R. Simons and R. M. Mueller, Czhechoslowak Journal of Physics Suppl. 46, 201 (1976)) have determined the effective mass of He-3 atoms in a He-3/He-4 mixture with great accuracy. We here report theoretical calculations for the dependence of that effective mass on the He-3 concentration. Using correlated basis functions perturbation theory to infinite order to compute effective interactions in the appropriate channels, we obtain good agreement between theory and experiment.
