NMR Hamiltonian as an effective Hamiltonian to generate Schrödinger's cat states

This report experimentally demonstrates that the theoretical background of the atom-field scenario points out that the NMR quadrupolar Hamiltonian works as an effective Hamiltonian to generate Schrödinger's cat states in a $2I+1$ low dimensional Hilbert space. The versatility of this nuclear spin setup is verified by monitoring the $^{23}$Na nucleus of a lyotropic liquid crystal sample at the nematic phase. The quantum state tomography and the Wigner quasiprobability distribution function are performed to characterize the accuracy of the experimental implementation.

Computational speed-up with a single qudit

Quantum algorithms are known for providing more efficient solutions to certain computational tasks than any corresponding classical algorithm. Here we show that a single qudit is sufficient to implement an oracle based quantum algorithm, which can solve a black-box problem faster than any classical algorithm. For $2d$ permutation functions defined on a set of $d$ elements, deciding whether a given permutation is even or odd, requires evaluation of the function for at least two elements. We demonstrate that a quantum circuit with a single qudit can determine the parity of the permutation with only one evaluation of the function. Our algorithm provides an example for quantum computation without entanglement since it makes use of the pure state of a qudit. We also present an experimental realization of the proposed quantum algorithm with a quadrupolar nuclear magnetic resonance using a single four-level quantum system, i.e., a ququart.

Experimental implementation of quantum information processing by Zeeman perturbed nuclear quadrupole resonance

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) has been widely used in the context of quantum information processing (QIP). However, despite the great similarities between NMR and nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR), no experimental implementation for QIP using NQR has been reported. We describe the implementation of basic quantum gates and their applications on the creation of pseudopure states using linearly polarized radiofrequency pulses under static magnetic field perturbation. The NQR quantum operations were implemented using a single crystal sample of KClO3 and observing 35Cl nuclei, which posses spin 3/2 and give rise to a 2-qubit system. The results are very promising and indicate that NQR can be successfully used for performing fundamental experiments in QIP. One advantage of NQR in comparison to NMR is that the main interaction is internal to the sample, which makes the system more compact, lowering its cost and making it easier to be miniaturized to solid state devices.

Detection of sub-lattice magnetism in sigma-phase Fe-V compounds by zero-field NMR

The first successful measurements of a sub-lattice magnetism with 51V NMR techniques in the sigma-phase Fe(100-x)Vx alloys with x = 34.4, 39.9 and 47.9 are reported. Vanadium atoms present on all five crystallographic sites are magnetic. Their magnetic properties are characteristic of a given site, which strongly depend on the composition. The strongest magnetism exhibit sites A and the weakest one sites D. The estimated average magnetic moment per V atom decreases from 0.36 muB for x = 34.4 to 0.20 muB for x = 47.9. The magnetism revealed at V atoms is linearly correlated with the magnetic moment of Fe atoms, which implies that the former is induced by the latter.
