Initial state QED radiation aspects for future $e^+e^-$ colliders

This white paper concerns theoretical and phenomenological aspects relevant to the physics of future $e^+e^-$ colliders, in particular regarding initial-state QED radiation. The contributions each contain key technical aspects, and are formulated in a pedagogical manner so as to render them accessible also to those who are not directly working on these and immediately-related topics. This should help both experts and non-experts understand the theoretical challenges that we shall face at future $e^+e^-$ colliders. Specifically, this paper contains descriptions of the treatment of initial state radiation from several Monte Carlo collaborations, as well as contributions that explain a number of more theoretical developments with promise of future phenomenological impact.

Towards all-order factorization of QED amplitudes at next-to-leading power

We generalise the factorization of abelian gauge theory amplitudes to next-to-leading power (NLP) in a soft scale expansion, following a recent generalisation for Yukawa theory. From an all-order power counting analysis of leading and next-to-leading regions, we infer the factorized structure for both a parametrically small and zero fermion mass. This requires the introduction of new universal jet functions, for non-radiative and single-radiative QED amplitudes, which we compute at one-loop order. We show that our factorization formula reproduces the relevant regions in one- and two-loop scattering amplitudes, appropriately addressing endpoint divergences. It provides a description of virtual collinear modes and accounts for non-trivial hard-collinear interplay present beyond the one-loop level, making this a first step towards a complete all-order factorization framework for gauge-theory amplitudes at NLP.

Diagrammatic resummation of leading-logarithmic threshold effects at next-to-leading power

Perturbative cross-sections in QCD are beset by logarithms of kinematic invariants, whose arguments vanish when heavy particles are produced near threshold. Contributions of this type often need to be summed to all orders in the coupling, in order to improve the behaviour of the perturbative expansion, and it has long been known how to do this at leading power in the threshold variable, using a variety of approaches. Recently, the problem of extending this resummation to logarithms suppressed by a single power of the threshold variable has received considerable attention. In this paper, we show that such next-to-leading power (NLP) contributions can indeed be resummed, to leading logarithmic (LL) accuracy, for any QCD process with a colour-singlet final state, using a direct generalisation of the diagrammatic methods available at leading power. We compare our results with other approaches, and comment on the implications for further generalisations beyond leading-logarithmic accuracy.

Effective operators in $t$-channel single top production and decay

The production of a single top quark in the $t$-channel and its subsequent decay is studied at NLO accuracy in QCD, augmented with the relevant dimension-6 effective operators from the Standard Model Effective Theory. We examine various kinematic and angular distributions for proton-proton collisions at the LHC at 13 TeV, in order to assess the sensitivity to these operators, both with and without the top quark narrow width approximation. Our results will be helpful when devising strategies to establish bounds on their coefficients, including the amount of CP violation of the weak dipole operator.

Non-abelian factorisation for next-to-leading-power threshold logarithms

Soft and collinear radiation is responsible for large corrections to many hadronic cross sections, near thresholds for the production of heavy final states. There is much interest in extending our understanding of this radiation to next-to-leading power (NLP) in the threshold expansion. In this paper, we generalise a previously proposed all-order NLP factorisation formula to include non-abelian corrections. We define a non-abelian radiative jet function, organising collinear enhancements at NLP, and compute it for quark jets at one loop. We discuss in detail the issue of double counting between soft and collinear regions. Finally, we verify our prescription by reproducing all NLP logarithms in Drell-Yan production up to NNLO, including those associated with double real emission. Our results constitute an important step in the development of a fully general resummation formalism for NLP threshold effects.

Universality of next-to-leading power threshold effects for colourless final states in hadronic collisions

We consider the production of an arbitrary number of colour-singlet particles near partonic threshold, and show that next-to-leading order cross sections for this class of processes have a simple universal form at next-to-leading power (NLP) in the energy of the emitted gluon radiation. Our analysis relies on a recently derived factorisation formula for NLP threshold effects at amplitude level, and therefore applies both if the leading-order process is tree-level and if it is loop-induced. It holds for differential distributions as well. The results can furthermore be seen as applications of recently derived next-to-soft theorems for gauge theory amplitudes. We use our universal expression to re-derive known results for the production of up to three Higgs bosons at NLO in the large top mass limit, and for the hadro-production of a pair of electroweak gauge bosons. Finally, we present new analytic results for Higgs boson pair production at NLO and NLP, with exact top-mass dependence.

Antenna Showers with One-Loop Matrix Elements

We consider the probability for a colour-singlet qqbar pair to emit a gluon, in strongly and smoothly ordered antenna showers. We expand to second order in alphaS and compare to the second-order QCD matrix elements for Z -> 3 jets, neglecting terms suppressed by 1/NC^2. We give a prescription that corrects the shower to the matrix-element result at this order for both soft and hard emissions, thereby explicitly reducing its dependence on evolution- and renormalization-scale choices. We confirm that the choice of pT for both of these scales absorbs all logarithms through order alphaS^2, and contrast this with various alternatives. We include these corrections in the VINCIA shower generator and study the impact on LEP event-shape and fragmentation observables. An uncertainty estimate is provided for each event, in the form of a vector of alternative weights.

A factorization approach to next-to-leading-power threshold logarithms

Threshold logarithms become dominant in partonic cross sections when the selected final state forces gluon radiation to be soft or collinear. Such radiation factorizes at the level of scattering amplitudes, and this leads to the resummation of threshold logarithms which appear at leading power in the threshold variable. In this paper, we consider the extension of this factorization to include effects suppressed by a single power of the threshold variable. Building upon the Low-Burnett-Kroll-Del Duca (LBKD) theorem, we propose a decomposition of radiative amplitudes into universal building blocks, which contain all effects ultimately responsible for next-to-leading power (NLP) threshold logarithms in hadronic cross sections for electroweak annihilation processes. In particular, we provide a NLO evaluation of the "radiative jet function", responsible for the interference of next-to-soft and collinear effects in these cross sections. As a test, using our expression for the amplitude, we reproduce all abelian-like NLP threshold logarithms in the NNLO Drell-Yan cross section, including the interplay of real and virtual emissions. Our results are a significant step towards developing a generally applicable resummation formalism for NLP threshold effects, and illustrate the breakdown of next-to-soft theorems for gauge theory amplitudes at loop level.

Towards NNLL resummation: hard matching coefficients for squark and gluino hadroproduction

We present the hard matching coefficients for squark and gluino hadroproduction. The hard matching coefficients follow from the next-to-leading order cross section near threshold and are an important ingredient for performing threshold resummation at next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. We discuss the calculation, list the analytical results and study the numerical impact of these corrections. We find that the impact of the hard matching coefficients can be considerable, with the largest effect observed for final states involving gluinos.

NNLL resummation for squark-antisquark pair production at the LHC

We consider the resummation of soft gluon emission for squark-antisquark pair-production at the LHC at next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic (NNLL) accuracy in the framework of the minimal supersymmetric standard model. We present the analytical ingredients needed for the calculation and provide numerical predictions for the LHC at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 14 TeV. We find a significant reduction in the scale uncertainty and a considerable increase in the prediction of the total cross section. Compared to the next-to-leading order prediction, the corrections increase the cross section by up to 30% for 1.5 TeV squarks at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV.

Squark and gluino hadroproduction

We review the theoretical status of squark and gluino hadroproduction and provide numerical predictions for all squark and gluino pair-production processes at the Tevatron and at the LHC, with a particular emphasis on proton-proton collisions at 7 TeV. Our predictions include next-to-leading order supersymmetric QCD corrections and the resummation of soft gluon emission at next-to-leading-logarithmic accuracy. We discuss the impact of the higher-order corrections on total cross sections, and provide an estimate of the theoretical uncertainty due to scale variation and the parton distribution functions.

Soft gluon resummation for squark and gluino pair-production at hadron colliders

We report on the study of soft gluon effects in the production of squarks and gluinos at hadron colliders. Close to production threshold, the emission of soft gluon results in the appearence of large logarithmic corrections in the theoretical expressions. In order to resum these corrections at next-to-leading-logarithmic accuracy appropriate one-loop anomalous dimensions have to be calculated. We present the calculation of the anomalous dimensions for all production channels of squarks and gluinos and provide numerical predictions for the Tevatron and the LHC.

Charged Higgs boson production in association with a top quark in MC@NLO

We discuss the calculation of charged Higgs boson production in association with top quark in the MC@NLO framework for combining NLO matrix elements with a parton shower. The process is defined in a model independent manner for wide applicability, and can be used if the charged Higgs boson mass is either greater or less than the mass of the top quark. For the latter mass region, care is needed in defining the charged Higgs production mode due to interference with top pair production. We give a suitable definition applicable in an NLO (plus parton shower) context, and present example results for the LHC.

Path integral approach to eikonal and next-to-eikonal exponentiation

We approach the issue of exponentiation of soft gauge boson corrections to scattering amplitudes from a path integral point of view. We show that if one represents the amplitude as a first quantized path integral in a mixed coordinate-momentum space representation, a charged particle interacting with a soft gauge field is represented as a Wilson line for a semi-infinite line segment, together with calculable fluctuations. Combining such line segments, we show that exponentiation in an abelian field theory follows immediately from standard path-integral combinatorics. In the non-abelian case, we consider color singlet hard interactions with two outgoing external lines, and obtain a new viewpoint for exponentiation in terms of ``webs'', with a closed form solution for their corresponding color factors. We investigate and clarify the structure of next-to-eikonal corrections.

Single-top hadroproduction in association with a W boson

We present the calculation of the Wt single-top production channel to next-to-leading order in QCD, interfaced with parton showers within the MC@NLO formalism. This channel provides a complementary way of investigating the properties of the Wtb vertex, with respect to the s- and t-channels. We pay special attention to the separation of this process from top quark pair production.

HERA and the LHC - A workshop on the implications of HERA for LHC physics: Proceedings - Part B

The HERA electron--proton collider has collected 100 pb$^{-1}$ of data since its start-up in 1992, and recently moved into a high-luminosity operation mode, with upgraded detectors, aiming to increase the total integrated luminosity per experiment to more than 500 pb$^{-1}$. HERA has been a machine of excellence for the study of QCD and the structure of the proton. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC), which will collide protons with a centre-of-mass energy of 14 TeV, will be completed at CERN in 2007. The main mission of the LHC is to discover and study the mechanisms of electroweak symmetry breaking, possibly via the discovery of the Higgs particle, and search for new physics in the TeV energy scale, such as supersymmetry or extra dimensions. Besides these goals, the LHC will also make a substantial number of precision measurements and will offer a new regime to study the strong force via perturbative QCD processes and diffraction. For the full LHC physics programme a good understanding of QCD phenomena and the structure function of the proton is essential. Therefore, in March 2004, a one-year-long workshop started to study the implications of HERA on LHC physics. This included proposing new measurements to be made at HERA, extracting the maximum information from the available data, and developing/improving the theoretical and experimental tools. This report summarizes the results achieved during this workshop.

Heavy Quarks: Summary Report

The present status of the heavy-quark production theory is critically reviewed in the first contribution. The second contribution summarises the present heavy flavour data from HERA and gives an outlook of what can be expected from HERA-II. The potential of the LHC experiments for charm and beauty physics is reviewed in the 3rd contribution. Then the relevance of saturation and small-x effects to heavy quark production at HERA and at the LHC are discussed. The non-perturbative aspects of heavy-quark fragmentation and their relevance to HERA and LHC are discussed in the next contribution. Finally, a comparison of different theoretical predictions for HERA and LHC based on different approaches is presented.
