The spin dependence of high energy proton scattering

Motivated by the need for an absolute polarimeter to determine the beam polarization for the forthcoming RHIC spin program, we study the spin dependence of the proton-proton elastic scattering amplitudes at high energy and small momentum transfer. We examine experimental evidence for the existence of an asymptotic part of the helicity-flip amplitude phi_5 which is not negligible relative to the largely imaginary average non-flip amplitude phi_+. We discuss theoretical estimates of r_5, essentially the ratio of phi_5 to phi_+, based upon extrapolation of low and medium energy Regge phenomenological results to high energies, models based on a hybrid of perturbative QCD and non-relativistic quark models, and models based on eikonalization techniques. We also apply the model-independent methods of analyticity and unitarity. The preponderence of evidence at available energy indicates that r_5 is small, probably less than 10%. The best available experimental limit comes from Fermilab E704:those data indicate that |r_5|<15%. These bounds are important because rigorous methods allow much larger values. In contradiction to a widely-held prejudice that r_5 decreases with energy, general principles allow it to grow as fast as ln(s) asymptotically, and some models show an even faster growth in the RHIC range. One needs a more precise measurement of r_5 or to bound it to be smaller than 5% in order to use the classical Coulomb-nuclear interference technique for RHIC polarimetry. As part of this study, we demonstrate the surprising result that proton-proton elastic scattering is self-analysing, in the sense that all the helicity amplitudes can, in principle, be determined experimentally at small momentum transfer without a knowledge of the magnitude of the beam and target polarization.

Scheme Dependence in Polarized Deep Inelastic Scattering

We study the effect of scheme dependence upon the NLO QCD analysis of the world data on polarized DIS. The reliability of an analysis at NLO is demonstrated by the consistency of our polarized densities with the NLO transformation rules relating them to each other. We stress the importance of the chiral JET scheme in which all the hard effects are consistently absorbed in the Wilson coefficient functions.

Polarized Parton Densities in the Nucleon

We present a critical assessment of what can be learnt from the present data on inclusive polarized DIS. We examine critically some of the simplifying assumptions made in recent analyses and study in detail the question of the determination of the gluon, strange sea and valence quark polarized densities. We have also carried out a new NLO QCD analysis of the world data. We find an excellent fit to the data and present our results for the polarized parton densities.

Positivity of NLO Spin-Dependent Parton Distributions

We discuss the positivity of the hadron density matrix in QCD. This basic property is shown to be preserved by QCD evolution, provided the relation $|ΔP_{ij}(z)| \leq P_{ij}$ is valid for all kernels for $z < 1$, and the usual "+" prescription is used. We comment on the positivity restrictions for the choice of the NLO factorization scheme for the evolution of the spin-dependent parton distributions.

NLO QCD Analysis of Polarized Deep Inelastic Scattering

We have carried out a NLO analysis of the world data on polarized DIS in the MS/bare scheme. We have studied two models of the parametrizations of the input parton densities, the first due to Brodsky, Burkhardt and Schmidt (BBS) which gives a simultaneous parametrization for both the polarized and unpolarized densities and in which the counting rules are strictly imposed, the second in which the input polarized densities are written in terms of the unpolarized ones in the generic form Deltaq(x)=f(x)q(x) with f(x) some simple smooth function. In both cases a good fit to the polarized data is achieved. As expected the polarized data do not allow a precise determination of the polarized gluon density. Concerning the polarized sea-quark densities, these are fairly well determined in the BBS model because of the interplay of polarized and unpolarized data, whereas in the second model, where only the polarized data are relevant, the polarized sea-quark densities are largely undetermined.

Single spin asymmetries in DIS

We consider possible mechanisms for single spin asymmetries in inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) processes with unpolarized leptons and transversely polarized nucleons. Tests for the effects of non-zero $\bfk_\perp$, for the properties of spin dependent quark fragmentations and for quark helicity conservation are suggested.

Form factor $π^0\to γ^* +γ^*$ at different photon virtualities

The $π^0 γγ$ vertex for virtual photons of squared masses $q_1^2$ and $q_2^2$ plays a vital rôle in several physical processes; for example for $q_1^2<0$, $q_2^2<0$, in the two-photon physics reaction $e^+ e^-\to e^+ e^- π^0$, and for $q_1^2>0$, $q_2^2>0$, in the annihilation process $e^+ e^-\to π^0 l^+ l^-$. It is also of interest because of its link to the axial anomaly. We suggest a new approach to this problem. We have obtained a closed analytic expression for the vertex in the limit in which at least one of $|q_1^2|$ and $|q_2^2|$ is large for arbitrary fixed values of the ratio $q_1^2/q_2^2$. We compare our results with those obtained previously by Brodsky and Lepage. It should be straightforward to test our predictions experimentally.

A Possible Explanation of the Excess Jet Production at Large E_T

We demonstrate that the significant discrepancy between the previous predictions of the conventional QCD and the CDF inclusive jet production data could be an indication that the behaviour of the Callan-Symanzik βfunction in QCD corresponds to it having an ultraviolet finite fixed point.

An exact sum rule for transversely polarized DIS

The Operator Product Expansion provides expressions for the $n^{th}$ moments of $g_1(x)$ and $g_2(x)$ in terms of hadronic matrix elements of local operators for $n =$ odd integer. In some cases these matrix elements are expected to be small leading to approximate sum rules for the {\em odd\/} moments of $g_{1,2}(x)$. We have shown how, working in a field-theoretic framework, one can derive expressions for the {\em even\/} moments of the {\em valence\/} parts of $g_{1,2}(x)$. These expressions cannot be written as matrix elements of {\em local\/} operators and do not coincide with the analytic continuation to $n=$ even integer of the OPE results. Just as for the OPE one can in some cases argue that the hadronic matrix elements should be small, leading to approximate sum rules for the moments of the valence parts of $g_{1,2}(x)$. But, most importantly, for the case $n=2$ we have proved rigorously that the hadronic matrix element vanishes, yielding the exact ELT sum rule \int^1_0 dx\, x\left[g^V_1(x)+2g^V_2(x)\right]=0. We have argued that the convergence properties of this sum rule are good and have discussed how it can be used to get information about $g_2(x)$ and as a further test of QCD.

Gamma^*, Z^* production in polarised p-p scattering as a probe of the proton spin structure

We present the results of a detailed study of the large transverse momentum Drell-Yan process, pp --> (Gamma^*, Z^*)X --> l^+l^- X at collider energies, with either one or both protons polarised, allowing the study of single- and double-spin asymmetries respectively. We show how these asymmetries obtained from angular distributions of the leptons in the Gamma^* (or Z^*) rest-frame, can be used to get information on the polarised parton distributions. Numerical results for the asymmetries and the cross-sections are presented, and the sensitivity of the asymmetries to the initial parton distributions indicates that these can be used as effective probes of the spin structure of the proton.
