Magnetic field driven novel phase transitions in EuTiO$_3$

The influence of an external static magnetic field (up to 480 mT)on the structural properties of EuTiO$_3$ (ETO) polycrystalline samples was examined by powder XRD at the Elettra synchrotron facilities in the temperature range 100-300K. While the cubic to tetragonal structural phase transition temperature in this magnetic field range remains almost unaffected, significant lattice effects appear at two characteristic temperatures (~200K and 250K), which becomes more pronounced at a critical threshold magnetic field. At ~200K a change in the sign of the magnetostriction is detected attributed to a modification of the local magnetic properties from intrinsic ferromagnetism to intrinsic antiferromagnetism. These data are a clear indication that strong spin-lattice interactions govern also the high temperature phase of ETO and trigger the appearance of magnetic domain formation and novel phase transitions

Magnetic interactions and the puzzling absence of any Raman mode in EuTiO3

Polycrystalline ceramic samples and a single crystal of EuTiO3 have been investigated by Raman spectroscopy in the temperature range 80-300 K. Although synchrotron XRD data clearly indicated the cubic to tetragonal phase transition around 282 K, no mode from the symmetry allowed Raman active phonons was found in the tetragonal phase, contrary to the case of the homologous SrTiO3. In order to study the evolution of this unique characteristic, ceramics of EuxSr1-xTiO3 (x=0.03-1.0) characterized by synchrotron XRD for the structural phase transition have been also investigated by Raman spectroscopy, verifying the very strong influence on the Raman yield by Eu substitution. By applying an external magnetic field or alternatively hydrostatic pressure modes are activated in the Raman spectra. The temperature dependence of the main mode that is activated shows remarkable agreement with theoretical predictions. We attribute the puzzling absence of the Raman modes to a mechanism related to strong spin-lattice interaction that drives the cubic to tetragonal structural phase transition and makes the Raman tensor antisymmetric. On the contrary, the external perturbations induce a symmetric Raman tensor allowing even symmetry modes to be present in the spectra. Previous EPR, muon scattering and magnetic measurements indicated the presence of small magnetic interactions deep inside the paramagnetic phase. In order to probe those magnetic interactions in our EuTiO3 polycrystalline sample and test our hypothesis, we have performed temperature dependant XAS/XMCD, which support the existence of magnetic nanodomains even close to room temperature.

Raman study of the anharmonicity in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_x$

A systematic Raman study in the visible carried out on the YBa2Cu316,18Ox (x=6-7) compounds, with isotopic substitution of 18O for 16O, has detected a doping dependent deviation from harmonic behavior for the frequency shift of the in-phase mode, a smaller amount of anharmonicity for the apex mode, and almost no effect for the out-of-phase B1g-symmetry phonon. It appears that the amount of anharmonicity depends strongly on the oxygen concentration; it diminishes close to the tetragonal to orthorhombic structural phase transition and close to optimal doping, while it reaches its maximum value for the ortho-II and a tetragonal phase. The almost zero anharmonicity at optimal doping persists even at 77K. The data in the overdoped oxygen concentration, where a softening of the in-phase phonon frequency occurs, indicate that the anharmonicity is not enhanced by the sudden increase in the CuO2 buckling. The results fully agree with recent studies of the ortho-II phase but they do not comply with a static double-well potential of the apical oxygen atom at optimal doping.

Local lattice distortions vs. structural phase transition in NdFeAsO1-xFx

The lattice properties at low temperatures of two samples of NdFeAsO1-xFx (x=0.05 and 0.25) have been examined in order to investigate possible structural phase transition that may occur in the optimally doped superconducting sample with respect to the non-superconducting low-F concentration compound. In order to detect small modifications in the ion displacements with temperature micro-Raman and high resolution synchrotron powder diffraction measurements were carried out. No increase of the width of the (220) or (322) tetragonal diffraction peaks and microstrains could be found in the superconducting sample from synchrotron XRD measurements. On the other hand, the atomic displacement parameters deviate from the expected behavior, in agreement with modifications in the phonon width, as obtained by Raman scattering. These deviations occur around 150 K for both F dopings, with distinct differences among the two compounds, i.e., they decrease at low doping and increase for the superconducting sample. The data do not support a hidden phase transition to an orthorhombic phase in the superconducting compound, but point to an isostructural lattice deformation. Based on the absence of magnetic effects in this temperature range for the superconducting sample, we attribute the observed lattice anomalies to the formation of local lattice distortions that, being screened by the carriers, can only acquire long-range coherence by means of a structural phase transition at low doping levels.

Pressure-Temperature phase diagram of multiferroic EuTiO$_3$

The structural transformation of multiferroic EuTiO$_3$ has been intensively investigated by synchrotron x-ray diffraction at pressures up to 50.3 GPa and temperatures from 50 to 500 K. An antiferrodistortive phase transition from cubic Pm-3m to tetragonal I4/mcm space group has been observed, identical to the one that has been previously explored at ambient pressure and low temperatures. Several compression/decompression cycles at different temperatures have been carried out to accurately map the transition, and as a result a P-T phase diagram for EuTiO$_3$ has been constructed. The observed phase transition exhibits many similarities with isostructural SrTiO$_3$, although the absence of magnetoelectric interactions in the latter accounts for the different phase boundaries between the two materials.

Non-linear lattice response of SmFeAsO_{1-x}F_{x} superconductor to hydrostatic pressure

Hydrostatic pressure Raman measurements have been carried out on the SmFeAsO series of oxypnictides with varying amount of doping (F substitution for O and Co for Fe) and transition temperature (T_{c}), in order to investigate lattice modifications and their connection to doping and superconductivity. Synchrotron XRD data on some of these compounds indicated that at low doping the lattice constants vary smoothly with pressure, but with increasing F concentration there is a deviation from the normal equation of state and these effects are related with modifications in the superconducting FeAs4 tetrahedra. The hydrostatic pressure Raman measurements show that the A1g mode of the rare earth atom for the superconducting compounds deviates from the linear pressure dependence at the same pressures where the XRD results indicate pressure-induced lattice anomalies. A similar anomaly is found for the As phonon of same symmetry. As in cuprates, the effect is diminished in the undoped compounds and it is not related with the F substitution being present in the Sm(Fe_{1-x}Co_{x})AsO as well. The calculated Grüneisen parameter for the Sm phonon ({γ\approx}1.5) is very similar to the corresponding values of cuprates and it does not vary with doping. For the Fe mode it has higher value ({γ\approx}1.8) than for As ({γ\approx}1) indicating a more anharmonic phonon.

Pressure-induced lattice instabilities and superconductivity in YBa2Cu4O8 and optimally doped YBa2Cu3O7-δ

Combined synchrotron angle-dispersive powder diffraction and micro-Raman spectroscopy are used to investigate the pressure-induced lattice instabilities that are accompanied by T$_{\rm c}$ anomalies in YBa$_{\rm 2}$Cu$_{\rm 4}$O$_{\rm 8}$, in comparison with the optimally doped YBa$_{\rm 2}$Cu$_{\rm 3}$O$_{\rm 7-δ}$ and the non-superconducting PrBa$_{\rm 2}$Cu$_{\rm 3}$O$_{\rm 6.92}$. In the first two superconducting systems there is a clear anomaly in the evolution of the lattice parameters and an increase of lattice disorder with pressure, that starts at $\approx3.7 GPa$ as well as irreversibility that induces a hysteresis. On the contrary, in the Pr-compound the lattice parameters follow very well the expected equation of state (EOS) up to 7 GPa. In complete agreement with the structural data, the micro-Raman data of the superconducting compounds show that the energy and width of the A$_{\rm g}$ phonons show anomalies at the same pressure range where the lattice parameters deviate from the EOS and the average Cu2-O$_{pl}$ bond length exhibits a strong contraction and correlate with the non-linear pressure dependence of T$_{\rm c}$. This is not the case for the non superconducting Pr sample, clearly indicating a connection with the charge carriers. It appears that the cuprates close to optimal doping are at the edge of lattice instability.

Lattice anomalies in the FeAs$_{\rm 4}$ tetrahedra of the NdFeAsO$_{\rm 0.85}$ superconductor that disappear at T$_{\rm c}$

High resolution synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction (SXRPD) was used to study the temperature dependence of the oxygen deficient NdFeAsO$_{0.85}$ superconducting compound. By employing a dense temperature sampling we have managed to reveal unnoticed structural modifications that start around $\sim$180K, and disappear at the transition temperature. The data show minor changes of the structural characteristics in the Nd-O charge reservoir layer while in the superconducting Fe-As layer the FeAs$_{4}$ tetrahedron shows gradual modifications below $\sim$180K, which suddenly disappear at T$_{\rm c}$ strongly indicating a connection with superconductivity.

Isotope effect on the E2g phonon and mesoscopic phase separation near the electronic topological transition in Mg1-xAlxB2

We report the boron isotope effect on the E2g phonon mode by micro-Raman spectroscopy on the ternary Mg1-xAlxB2 system, synthesized with pure isotopes 10B and 11B. The isotope coefficient on the phonon frequency is near 0.5 in the full range decreasing near x = 0. The intraband electron-phonon (e-ph) coupling, for the electrons in the sigma band, has been extracted from the E2g line-width and frequency softening. Tuning the Fermi energy near the electronic topological transition (ETT), where the sigma Fermi surface changes from 2D to 3D topology the E2g mode, shows the known Kohn anomaly on the 2D side of the ETT and a splitting of the E2g phonon frequency into a hard and soft component from x = 0 to x = 0.28. The results suggest a minor role of the intraband phonon mediated pairing in the control of the high critical temperature in Mg1-xAlxB2. The common physical features of diborides with the novel multigap FeAs-based superconductors and cuprates is discussed.

Lattice effects in the La$_{\rm 2-x}$Sr$_{\rm x}$CuO$_{\rm 4}$ compounds

Systematic Raman studies on several cuprates (YBa$_{\rm 2}$Cu$_{\rm 3}$O$_{\rm x}$, YBa$_{\rm 2}$Cu$_{\rm 4}$O$_{\rm 8}$ or Bi$_{\rm 2}$Sr$_{\rm 2}$CaCu$_{\rm 2}$O$_{\rm 8}$) have shown that at optimal doping the compounds are at the edge of lattice instability; once this level is exceeded, by means of doping or applying external hydrostatic pressure, the changes in the transition temperature are accompanied by spectral modifications. There are strong indications that the reduction in T$_{\rm c}$ is correlated with a separation into nanoscale phases, which involve the oxygen atoms of the CuO$_{\rm 2}$ planes. In this work, modifications with doping in the Raman spectra of the La$_{\rm 2-x}$Sr$_{\rm x}$CuO$_{\rm 4}$ compound are presented, which show that spin or charge ordering is coupled with lattice distortions in the whole doping region.

Micro-Raman evidence for topological charge order across the superconducting dome of La_{2-x)SrxCuO4

The doping dependence of the micro-Raman spectra of high quality La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 microcrystals with x=0.0-0.45 has been investigated in the region 10-300 K. The phonon at ~100 cm^{-1} of the orthorhombic phase shows a classical soft mode behavior up to x=0.17, supporting its correlation with the LTO to HTT transition. In the xx/yy polarization spectra of the superconducting concentrations new modes at ~150 and 370 cm^{-1} related to the symmetry breaking and a broad band at ~280 cm^{-1} are attributed to the charge ordering at temperatures well above T_c. At all temperatures studied a correlation has been found between the doping dependence of the transition temperature and the intensity of the bands at ~150, ~280, ~370 cm^{-1}, the intensity of the La/Sr mode, and the asymmetry of the apex phonon.

Crystal Structure Studies of Human Dental Apatite as a Function of Age

Studies of the average crystal structure properties of human dental apatite as a function of the tooth-age in the range of 5-87 years are reported. The crystallinity of the dental hydroxyapatite decreases with the tooth-age. The a-lattice constant that is associated with the carbonate content in carbonate apatite decreases with the tooth-age in a systematic way, whereas the c-lattice constant does not change significantly. Thermogravimetric measurements demonstrate an increase of the carbonate content with the tooth-age. FTIR spectroscopy reveals both, B and A-type carbonate substitutions with the B-type greater than the A-type substitution by a factor up to ~5. An increase of the carbonate content as a function of the tooth-age can be deduced from the ratio of the v2 CO3 to the v1 PO4 IR modes.

Sc substitution for Mg in MgB2: effects on Tc and Kohn anomaly

Here we report synthesis and characterization of Mg_{1-x}Sc_{x}B_{2} (0.12 T_{c}>6 K. We find that the Sc doping moves the chemical potential through the 2D/3D electronic topological transition (ETT) in the sigma band where the ``shape resonance" of interband pairing occurs. In the 3D regime beyond the ETT we observe a hardening of the E_{2g} Raman mode with a significant line-width narrowing due to suppression of the Kohn anomaly over the range 0<q<2k_{F}.

Site-selective oxygen isotope effect on the magnetic field penetration depth in underdoped Y$_{0.6}$Pr$_{0.4}$Ba$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$

We report site-selective oxygen isotope ($^{16}$O/$^{18}$O) effect (OIE) measurements on the in-plane penetration depth $λ_{ab} $ in underdoped Y$_{0.6}$Pr$_{0.4}$Ba$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$, using the muon-spin rotation ($μ$SR) technique. A pronounced OIE on the transition temperature $T_c$ as well as on $λ_{ab}^{-2}(0)$ was observed, which mainly arises from the oxygen sites within the superconducting CuO$_2$ planes (100 % within error bar). The values of the corresponding relative isotope shifts were found to be $T_c/T_c= -3.7(4)%$ and $Δλ^{-2}_{ab}(0)/λ^{-2}_{ab}(0)= -6.2(1.0)%$. Our results imply that in this compound the phonon modes involving the movement of planar oxygen are dominantly coupled to the electrons.

Strong-coupling superconductivity due to soft boson modes in MgB_2, cuprates, borocarbides and some heavy fermions

We report micro-Raman measurements that reveal a low-energy soft mode at 16-19 meV in MgB_2 which becomes sharper in the superconducting state. With a boson spectrum based on this mode we reproduce, within Eliashberg theory, the T_c, the T-shape of the NMR relaxation rate as well as unusual dip-hump features in available tunneling data. We compare MgB_2 to cuprates, borocarbides and UPd_2Al_3, where we identify soft bosonic modes at energies which scale with their T_c suggesting that all these materials are very strong coupling superconductors to soft bosonic modes, that are possibly precursors of quantum instabilities.

A Displacive Structural Transformation in the CuO_2 Planes of YBa_2Cu_3O_x at the Underdoped-Overdoped Phase Separation Line

A structural phase transformation in the CuO_2 planes of YBa_2Cu_3O_x has been observed at the onset of the overdoped regime, x=6.95. We have measured as a function of x the dimpling in the CuO_2 planes by EXAFS, and the O2,3 in-phase (A_1g) mode by Raman scattering. The data show for x>6.95 anomalously large static displacements of the Cu2 atoms off the O2,3 layer, and a gap in the distribution of the O2,3 in-phase Raman shifts. We conclude the structure of overdoped YBa_2Cu_3O_x to be a martensitic form of the structure most favourable for the superconductivity, and possibly at the origin of the split superconducting transition in the overdoped regime.
