On the harmonicity of normal almost contact metric structures

We consider normal almost contact structures on a Riemannian manifold and, through their associated sections of an ad-hoc twistor bundle, study their harmonicity, as sections or as maps. We rewrite these harmonicity equations in terms of the Riemann curvature tensor and find conditions relating the harmonicity of the almost contact and almost complex structures of the total and base spaces of the Morimoto fibration.

Harmonicity of normal almost contact metric structures

We consider normal almost contact structures on a Riemannian manifold and, through their associated sections of an ad-hoc twistor bundle, study their harmonicity, as sections or as maps. We rewrite these harmonicity equations in terms of the curvature tensor and find conditions relating the harmonicity of the almost contact metric and almost complex structures of the total and base spaces of the Morimoto fibration. We apply these results to homogeneous principal circle bundles over generalised flag manifolds, in particular Aloff-Wallach spaces, to mass-produce harmonic almost contact metric structures.

Hypersurfaces of nearly Kahler twistor spaces

In this article, we show that a hypersurface of the nearly Kahler $CP^3$ or $F_{1,2}$ cannot have its shape operator and induced almost contact structure commute together. This settles the question for six-dimensional homogeneous nearly Kahler manifolds, as the cases of $S^6$ and $S^3 \times S^3$ were previously solved, and provides a counterpart to the more classical question for the complex space forms $CP^n$ and $CH^n$. The proof relies heavily on the construction of $CP^3$ and $F_{1,2}$ as twistor spaces of $S^4$ and $CP^2$

The biharmonic homotopy problem for unit vector fields on 2-tori

The bienergy of smooth maps between Riemannian manifolds, when restricted to unit vector fields, yields two different variational problems depending on whether one takes the full functional or just the vertical contribution. Their critical points, called biharmonic unit vector fields and biharmonic unit sections, form different sets. Working with surfaces, we first obtain general characterizations of biharmonic unit vector fields and biharmonic unit sections under conformal change of the metric. In the case of a 2-dimensional torus, this leads to a proof that biharmonic unit sections are always harmonic and a general existence theorem, in each homotopy class, for biharmonic unit vector fields.

CMC proper-biharmonic surfaces of constant Gaussian curvature in spheres

CMC surfaces in spheres are investigated under the extra condition of biharmonicity. From the work of Miyata, especially in the flat case, we give a complete description of such immersions and show that for any $h\in (0,1)$ there exist CMC proper-biharmonic planes and cylinders in $\sn^5$ with $|H|=h$, while a necessary and sufficient condition on $h$ is found for the existence of CMC proper-biharmonic tori in $\sn^5$.

Biharmonic surfaces of constant mean curvature

We compute a Simons' type formula for the stress-energy tensor of biharmonic maps from surfaces. Specializing to Riemannian immersions, we prove several rigidity results for biharmonic CMC surfaces, putting in evidence the influence of the Gaussian curvature on pseudo-umbilicity. Finally, the condition of biharmonicity is shown to enable an extension of the classical Hopf theorem to CMC surfaces in any ambient Riemannian manifold.

Harmonic morphisms and moment maps on hyper-Kähler manifolds

We characterise the actions, by holomorphic isometries on a Kähler manifold with zero first Betti number, of an abelian Lie group of dim\geq 2, for which the moment map is horizontally weakly conformal (with respect to some Euclidean structure on the Lie algebra of the group). Furthermore, we study the hyper-Kähler moment map $ϕ$ induced by an abelian Lie group T acting by triholomorphic isometries on a hyper-Kähler manifold M, with zero first Betti number, thus obtaining the following: If dim T=1 then $ϕ$ is a harmonic morphism. Moreover, we illustrate this on the tangent bundle of the complex projective space equipped with the Calabi hyper-Kähler structure, and we obtain an explicit global formula for the map. If dim T\geq 2 and either $ϕ$ has critical points, or M is nonflat and dim M=4 dim T then $ϕ$ cannot be horizontally weakly conformal.

Harmonic Vector Fields on Space Forms

A vector field s on a Riemannian manifold M is said to be harmonic if there exists a member of a 2-parameter family of generalised Cheeger-Gromoll metrics on TM with respect to which s is a harmonic section. If M is a simply-connected non-flat space form other than the 2-sphere, examples are obtained of conformal vector fields that are harmonic. In particular, the harmonic Killing fields and conformal gradient fields are classified, a loop of non-congruent harmonic conformal fields on the hyperbolic plane constructed, and the 2-dimensional classification achieved for conformal fields. A classification is then given of all harmonic quadratic gradient fields on spheres.

Biharmonic holomorphic maps and conformally Kahler geometry

We give conditions on the Lee vector field of an almost Hermitian manifold such that any holomorphic map from this manifold into a (1,2)-symplectic manifold must satisfy the fourth-order condition of being biharmonic, hence generalizing the Lichnerowicz theorem on harmonic maps. These third-order non-linear conditions are shown to greatly simplify on l.c.K. manifolds and construction methods and examples are given in all dimensions.

The harmonicity of nearly cosymplectic structures

Almost contact structures can be identified with sections of a twistor bundle and this allows to define their harmonicity, as sections or maps. We consider the class of nearly cosymplectic almost contact structures on a Riemannian manifold and prove curvature identities which imply the harmonicity of their parametrizing section, thus complementing earlier results on nearly-K{ä}hler almost complex structures.

Generalized Cheeger-Gromoll Metrics and the Hopf map

We show, using two different approaches, that there exists a family of Riemannian metrics on the tangent bundle of a two-sphere, which induces metrics of constant curvature on its unit tangent bundle. In other words, given such a metric on the tangent bundle of a two-sphere, the Hopf map is identified with a Riemannian submersion from the universal covering space of the unit tangent bundle onto the two-sphere. A hyperbolic counterpart dealing with the tangent bundle of a hyperbolic plane is also presented.

The geometry of generalised Cheeger-Gromoll metrics

We study the geometry of the tangent bundle equipped with a two-parameter family of Riemannian metrics. After deriving the expression of the Levi-Civita connection, we compute the Riemann curvature tensor and the sectional, Ricci and scalar curvatures. Specializing to the case of space forms, we characterise the metrics giving positive sectional curvature and show that one can always find parameters ensuring positive scalar curvature on the tangent space. Under some curvature conditions, this extends to general base manifolds.

Biharmonic submanifolds of $\mathbb{C}P^n$

We give some general results on proper-biharmonic submanifolds of a complex space form and, in particular, of the complex projective space. These results are mainly concerned with submanifolds with constant mean curvature or parallel mean curvature vector field. We find the relation between the bitension field of the inclusion of a submanifold $\bar{M}$ in $\mathbb{C}P^n$ and the bitension field of the inclusion of the corresponding Hopf-tube in $\mathbb{S}^{2n+1}$. Using this relation we produce new families of proper-biharmonic submanifolds of $\mathbb{C}P^n$. We study the geometry of biharmonic curves of $\mathbb{C}P^n$ and we characterize the proper-biharmonic curves in terms of their curvatures and complex torsions.

A characterization of Dirac morphisms

Relating the Dirac operators on the total space and on the base manifold of a horizontally conformal submersion, we characterize Dirac morphisms, i.e. maps which pull back (local) harmonic spinor fields onto (local) harmonic spinor fields.

Harmonic maps and Kaluza-Klein metrics on spheres

This article studies the harmonicity of vector fields on Riemannian manifolds, viewed as maps into the tangent bundle equipped with a family of Riemannian metrics. Geometric and topological rigidity conditions are obtained, especially for surfaces and vector fields of constant norm, and existence is proved on two-tori. Classifications are given for conformal, quadratic and Killing vector fields on spheres. Finally, the class of metric considered on the tangent bundle is enlarged, permitting new vector fields to become harmonic.

Eigenvalues of harmonic almost submersions

Maps between Riemannian manifolds which are submersions on a dense subset, are studied by means of the eigenvalues of the pull-back of the target metrics, the first fundamental form. Expressions for the derivatives of these eigenvalues yield characterizations of harmonicity, totally geodesic maps and biconformal changes of metric preserving harmonicity. A Schwarz lemma for pseudo harmonic morphisms is proved, using the dilatation of the eigenvalues and, in dimension five, a Bochner technique method, involving the Laplacian of the difference of the eigenvalues, gives conditions forcing pseudo harmonic morphisms to be harmonic morphisms.

Biharmonic maps and morphisms from conformal mappings

Inspired by the all-important conformal invariance of harmonic maps on two-dimensional domains, this article studies the relationship between biharmonicity and conformality. We first give a characterization of biharmonic morphisms, analogues of harmonic morphisms investigated by Fuglede and Ishihara, which, in particular, explicits the conditions required for a conformal map in dimension four to preserve biharmonicity and helps producing the first example of a biharmonic morphism which is not a special type of harmonic morphism. Then, we compute the bitension field of horizontally weakly conformal maps, which include conformal mappings. This leads to several examples of proper (i.e. non-harmonic) biharmonic conformal maps, in which dimension four plays a pivotal role. We also construct a family of Riemannian submersions which are proper biharmonic maps.
