The High-Mass End of the Black Hole Mass Function: Mass Estimates in Brightest Cluster Galaxies

We present Hubble Space Telescope imaging and spectroscopic observations of three Brightest Cluster Galaxies, Abell 1836-BCG, Abell 2052-BCG, and Abell 3565-BCG, obtained with the Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2, the Advanced Camera for Surveys and the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph. The data provide detailed information on the structure and mass profile of the stellar component, the dust optical depth, and the spatial distribution and kinematics of the ionized gas within the innermost region of each galaxy. Dynamical models, which account for the observed stellar mass profile and include the contribution of a central supermassive black hole (SBH), are constructed to reproduce the kinematics derived from the Halpha and [N II](lambda 6548,6583) emission lines. Secure SBH detection with M_bh=3.61(+0.41,-0.50)x10^9 M_sun and M_bh=1.34(+0.21,-0.19)x10^9 M_sun, respectively, are obtained for Abell 1836-BCG and Abell 3565-BCG, which show regular rotation curves and strong central velocity gradients. In the case of Abell 2052-BCG, the lack of an orderly rotational motion prevents a secure determination, although an upper limit of M_bh < 4.60x10^9 M_sun can be placed on the mass of the central SBH. These measurements represent an important step forward in the characterization of the high-mass end of the SBH mass function.

Early-type galaxies in the near-infrared: 1.5-2.4\mum spectroscopy

Near-infrared (hereafter NIR) data may provide complementary information to the traditional optical population synthesis analysis of unresolved stellar populations because the spectral energy distribution of the galaxies in the 1-2.5\mum range is dominated by different types of stars than at optical wavelengths. Furthermore, NIR data are subjected to less absorption and hence could constrain the stellar populations in dust-obscured galaxies. We want to develop observational constraints on the stellar populations of unresolved stellar systems in the NIR. To achieve this goal we need a benchmark sample of NIR spectra of ``simple'' early-type galaxies, to be used for testing and calibrating the outputs of population synthesis models. We obtained low-resolution (R~1000) long-slit spectra between 1.5 and 2.4\mum for 14 nearby early-type galaxies using SofI at NTT and higher resolution (R~3000) long-slit spectra, centered at the MgI at ~1.51\mum for a heterogeneous sample of 5 nearby galaxies observed with ISAAC at VLT. We defined spectral indices for CO, NaI, CaI and MgI features and measured the strengths of these features in the sample galaxies. We defined a new global NIR metallicity index, suitable for abundance measurements in low-resolution spectra. Finally, we present an average NIR spectrum of an early-type galaxy, built from a homogenized subset of our sample. The NIR spectra of the sample galaxies show great similarity and the strength of some features does correlate with the iron abundance [Fe/H] and optical metal features of the galaxies. The data suggest that the NIR metal features, in combination with a hydrogen absorption feature may be able to break the age-metallicity degeneracy just like the Mg and Fe features in the optical wavelength range.

Stellar Populations of Bulges in 14 Cluster Disc Galaxies

Photometry and long-slit spectroscopy are presented for 14 S0 and spiral galaxies of the Fornax, Eridanus and Pegasus cluster, and NGC 7582 group. The structural parameters of the galaxies are derived from the R-band images by performing a two-dimensional photometric decomposition of the surface-brightness distribution. This is assumed to be the sum of the contribution of a bulge and disc component characterized by elliptical and concentric isophotes with constant (but possibly different) ellipticity and position angles. The rotation curves and velocity dispersion profiles are measured from the spectra obtained along the major axis of galaxies. The radial profiles of the Hb, Mg, and Fe line-strength indices are presented too. Correlations between the central values of Mgd, , Hb, and sigma are found. The age, metallicity and alpha/Fe enhancement of the stellar population in the center and at the radius where bulge and disc give the same contribution to the total surface brightness are obtained using stellar population models with variable element abundance ratios. Three classes of bulges are identified. The youngest bulges (~2 Gyr) with ongoing star formation, intermediate-age bulges (4-8 Gyr) have solar metallicity, and old bulges (~10 Gyr) have high metallicity. Most of the sample bulges display solar alpha/Fe enhancement, no gradient in age, and a negative gradient of metallicity. The presence of negative gradient in the metallicity radial profile favors a scenario with bulge formation via dissipative collapse. (abridged)

Confirmation of a Kinematic Diagnostic for Face-On B/P Bulges

We present the results of high resolution absorption-line spectroscopy of 3 face-on galaxies, NGC 98, NGC 600, and NGC 1703 with the aim of searching for box/peanut (B/P)-shaped bulges. These observations test and confirm, for the first, time the prediction that face-on B/P-shaped bulges can be recognized by two minima in the profile along the bar's major axis of the fourth Gauss-Hermite moment h_4 of the line-of-sight velocity distribution (LOSVD). In NGC 98, a clear double minimum in h_4 is present along the major axis of the bar and before the end of the bar, as predicted. In contrast, in NGC 600, which is also a barred galaxy but lacks a substantial bulge, we do not find any significant kinematic signature for a B/P-shaped bulge. In NGC 1703, which is an unbarred control galaxy, we found no evidence of a B/P bulge. We also show directly that the LOSVD is broader at the location of the h_4 minimum in NGC 98 than elsewhere. This more direct method avoids possible artifacts associated with the degeneracy between the measurement of line-of-sight velocity dispersion and h_4.

Structure and dynamics of galaxies with a low surface brightness disc. I. The stellar and ionised-gas kinematics

(abridged) Photometry and long-slit spectroscopy are presented for a sample of 6 galaxies with a low surface brightness stellar disc and a bulge. The stellar and ionised-gas kinematics were measured along the major and minor axis in half of the sample galaxies, whereas the other half was observed only along two diagonal axes. Spectra along two diagonal axes were obtained also for one of the objects with major and minor axis spectra. The kinematic measurements extend in the disc region out to a surface-brightness level mu_R~24mag/arcsec^2 reaching in all cases the flat part of the rotation curve. The stellar kinematics turns out to be more regular and symmetric than the ionised-gas kinematics, which often shows the presence of non-circular, off-plane, and non-ordered motions. This raises the question about the reliability of the use of the ionised gas as the tracer of the circular velocity in the modeling of the mass distribution, in particular in the central regions of low surface brightness galaxies.

The pseudobulge of NGC 1292

The photometric and kinematic properties of Sb NGC 1292 suggest it hosts a pseudobulge. The properties of the stellar population of such a pseudobulge are consistent with a slow buildup within a scenario of secular evolution.

Structural properties of disk galaxies: The intrinsic equatorial ellipticity of bulges

The structural parameters of a magnitude-limited sample of 148 unbarred S0-Sb galaxies were derived to study the correlations between bulge and disk parameters as well as the probability distribution function (PDF) of the intrinsic equatorial ellipticity of bulges. A new algorithm (GASP2D) was used to perform the bidimensional bulge-disk decomposition of the J-band galaxy images extracted from the archive of the 2MASS survey. The PDF of intrinsic ellipticities was derived from the distribution of the observed ellipticities of the bulges and misalignments between the the bulges and disks. About 80% of the observed bulges are not oblate but triaxial ellipsoids. Their mean axial ratio in the equatorial plane is =0.85. There is not significant dependence of their PDF on morphology, light concentration or luminosity. This has to be explained by the different scenarios of bulge formation.

Properties of bars in the local universe

We studied the fraction and properties of bars in a sample of about 3000 galaxies extracted from SDSS-DR5. This represents a volume limited sample with galaxies located between redshift 0.01 -20, and inclination i < 60. Interacting galaxies were excluded from the sample. The fraction of barred galaxies in our sample is 45%. We found that 32% of S0s, 55% of early-type spirals, and 52% of late-type spirals are barred galaxies. The bars in S0s galaxies are weaker than those in later-type galaxies. The bar length and galaxy size are correlated, being larger bars located in larger galaxies. Neither the bar strength nor bar length correlate with the local galaxy density. On the contrary, the bar properties correlate with the properties of their host galaxies. Galaxies with higher central light concentration host less and weaker bars.

Detection of non-ordered central gas motions in a sample of four low surface brightness galaxies

We present integral-field spectroscopy of the ionized gas in the central regions of four galaxies with a low surface brightness disk taken with the Visible Multi Object Spectrograph at the Very Large Telescope and aimed at testing the accuracy in the determination of the central logarithmic slope $α$ of the mass density radial profile $ρ(r) \propto r^α$ in this class of objects. For all the sample galaxies we subtracted from the observed velocity field the best-fit model of gas in circular motions and derived the residuals. Only ESO-LV 5340200 is characterized by a regular velocity field. We extracted the velocity curves of this galaxy along several position angles, in order to estimate the uncertainty in deriving the central gradient of the total mass density from long-slit spectroscopy. We report the detection of strong non-ordered motions of the ionized gas in three out of four sample galaxies. The deviations have velocity amplitudes and spatial scales that make not possible to disentangle between cuspy and core density radial profiles.

Structural properties of disk galaxies I. The intrinsic ellipticity of bulges

(Abridged) A variety of formation scenarios was proposed to explain the diversity of properties observed in bulges. Studying their intrinsic shape can help in constraining the dominant mechanism at the epochs of their assembly. The structural parameters of a magnitude-limited sample of 148 unbarred S0--Sb galaxies were derived in order to study the correlations between bulges and disks as well as the probability distribution function (PDF) of the intrinsic equatorial ellipticity of bulges. It is presented a new fitting algorithm (GASP2D) to perform the two-dimensional photometric decomposition of galaxy surface-brightness distribution. This was assumed to be the sum of the contribution of a bulge and disk component characterized by elliptical and concentric isophotes with constant (but possibly different) ellipticity and position angles. Bulge and disk parameters of the sample galaxies were derived from the J-band images which were available in the Two Micron All Sky Survey. The PDF of the equatorial ellipticity of the bulges was derived from the distribution of the observed ellipticities of bulges and misalignments between bulges and disks. Strong correlations between the bulge and disk parameters were found. About 80% of bulges in unbarred lenticular and early-to-intermediate spiral galaxies are not oblate but triaxial ellipsoids. Their mean axial ratio in the equatorial plane is = 0.85. There is not significant dependence of their PDF on morphology, light concentration, and luminosity. The interplay between bulge and disk parameters favors scenarios in which bulges assembled from mergers and/or grew over long times through disk secular evolution. But all these mechanisms have to be tested against the derived distribution of bulge intrinsic ellipticities.

Spatially resolved spectroscopy of Coma cluster early-type galaxies IV. Completing the dataset

The long-slit spectra obtained along the minor axis, offset major axis and diagonal axis are presented for 12 E and S0 galaxies of the Coma cluster drawn from a magnitude-limited sample studied before. The rotation curves, velocity dispersion profiles and the H_3 and H_4 coefficients of the Hermite decomposition of the line of sight velocity distribution are derived. The radial profiles of the Hbeta, Mg, and Fe line strength indices are measured too. In addition, the surface photometry of the central regions of a subsample of 4 galaxies recently obtained with Hubble Space Telescope is presented. The data will be used to construct dynamical models of the galaxies and study their stellar populations.

Bulge properties and dark matter content of early-type barred galaxies

The dynamics of a barred galaxy depends on the pattern speed of its bar. The only direct method for measuring the pattern speed of a bar is the Tremaine-Weinberg technique. This method is best suited to the analysis of the distribution and dynamics of the stellar component. Therefore it has been mostly used for early-type barred galaxies. Most of them host a classical bulge. On the other hand, a variety of indirect methods, which are based on the analysis of the distribution and dynamics of the gaseous component, has been used to measure the bar pattern speed in late-type barred galaxies. Nearly all the measured bars are as rapidly rotating as they can be. By comparing this result with high-resolution numerical simulations of bars in dark matter halos, it is possible to conclude that these bars reside in maximal disks.

Upper limits on the mass of supermassive black holes from STIS archival data

The growth of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) appears to be closely linked with the formation of spheroids. There is a pressing need to acquire better statistics on SMBH masses, since the existing samples are preferentially weighted toward early-type galaxies with very massive SMBHs. With this motivation we started a project aimed at measuring upper limits on the mass of the SMBHs that can be present in the center of all the nearby galaxies (D<100 Mpc) for which STIS/G750M spectra are available in the HST archive. These upper limits will be derived by modeling the central emission-line widths ([NII], Halpha and [SII]) observed over an aperture of ~0.1" (R<50 pc). Here we present our preliminary results for a subsample of 76 bulges.

Dynamical modelling of luminous and dark matter in 17 Coma early-type galaxies

Dynamical models for 17 Coma early-type galaxies are presented. The galaxy sample consists of flattened, rotating as well as non-rotating early-types including cD and S0 galaxies with luminosities between M=-18.79 and M=-22.56. Kinematical long-slit observations cover at least the major and minor axis and extend to 1-4 effective radii. Axisymmetric Schwarzschild models are used to derive stellar mass-to-light ratios and dark halo parameters. In every galaxy models with a dark matter halo match the data better than models without. The statistical significance is over 95 percent for 8 galaxies, around 90 percent for 5 galaxies and for four galaxies it is not significant. For the highly significant cases systematic deviations between observed and modelled kinematics are clearly seen; for the remaining galaxies differences are more statistical in nature. Best-fit models contain 10-50 percent dark matter inside the half-light radius. The central dark matter density is at least one order of magnitude lower than the luminous mass density. The central phase-space density of dark matter is often orders of magnitude lower than in the luminous component, especially when the halo core radius is large. The orbital system of the stars along the major-axis is slightly dominated by radial motions. Some galaxies show tangential anisotropy along the minor-axis, which is correlated with the minor-axis Gauss-Hermite coefficient H4. Changing the balance between data-fit and regularisation constraints does not change the reconstructed mass structure significantly. Model anisotropies tend to strengthen if the weight on regularisation is reduced, but the general property of a galaxy to be radially or tangentially anisotropic, respectively, does not change. The Black Hole Mass of Abell 1836-BCG and Abell 3565-BCG

Two brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs), namely Abell 1836-BCG and Abell 3565-BCG, were observed with the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) and the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) on board the Hubble Space Telescope. By modeling the available photometric and kinematic data, it resulted that the mass of Abell 1836-BCG and Abell 3565-BCG are M_bh=4.8(+0.8,-0.7)x10^9 M_sun and M_bh=1.3(+0.3,-0.4)x10^9 M_sun at 1 sigma confidence level, respectively.

The bar pattern speed of NGC 4431

We present surface photometry and stellar kinematics of NGC 4431, a barred dwarf galaxy in the Virgo cluster undergoing a tidal interaction with one of its neighbors, NGC 4436. We measured its bar pattern speed using the Tremaine-Weinberg method, and derived the ratio of the corotation radius, D_L, to the bar semi-major axis, a_B. We found D_L/a_B=0.6^{+1.2}_{-0.4} at 99% confidence level. Albeit with large uncertainty, the probability that the bar ends close to its corotation radius (i.e., 1.0 \leq D_L/a_B \leq 1.4) is about twice as likely as that the bar is much shorter than corotation radius (i.e., D_L/a_B > 1.4).

The search for inner polar disks with integral field spectroscopy: the case of NGC 2855 and NGC 7049

The presence of non-circular and off-plane gas motions is frequently observed in the inner regions of disk galaxies. We have measured with integral-field spectroscopy the surface-brightness distribution and kinematics of the ionized gas in NGC 2855 and NGC 7049. These two early-type spiral galaxies were selected to possibly host a kinematically-decoupled gaseous component in orthogonal rotation with respect to the galaxy disk. We have modeled the ionized-gas kinematics and distribution of both galaxies assuming that the gaseous component is distributed either on two orthogonally-rotating disks or in a single and strongly warped disk. In both galaxies the velocity field and distribution of the inner gas are consistent with the presence of an inner polar disk. In NGC 2855 it correponds to the innermost and strongly warped portion of the main disk. In NGC 7049 it is a central and geometrically-decoupled disk, which is nested in the main disk.

NGC5719/13: interacting spirals forming a counter-rotating stellar disc

(Context) When a galaxy acquires material from the outside, it is likely that the resulting angular momentum of the accreted material is decoupled from that of the pre-existing galaxy. The presence of stars counter-rotating with respect to other stars and/or gas represents an extreme case of decoupling. (Aims) NGC5719, an almost edge-on Sab galaxy with a prominent skewed dust lane, shows a spectacular on-going interaction with its face-on Sbc companion NGC5713. Observations of such interacting systems provide insight into the processes at work in assembling and reshaping galaxies. (Methods) Studies were made of the distribution and kinematics of neutral hydrogen in the NGC5719/13 galaxy pair and the ionised gas and stellar kinematics along the major axis of NGC5719. (Results) Two HI tidal bridges that loop around NGC5719 and connect to NGC5713, and two HI tidal tails departing westward from NGC5713 were detected. There is a correspondence between the HI condensations and the location of clumps of young stars within and outside the disc of NGC5719. The low-mass satellite PGC135857 at the tip of the northern tail was detected in HI, and is likely a by-product of the interaction. The neutral and ionised hydrogen in the disc of NGC5719 are counter-rotating with respect to the main stellar disc. The counter-rotating stellar disc contains about 20% of the stars in the system, and has the same radial extension as the main stellar disc. This is the first interacting system in which a counter-rotating stellar disc has been detected. (Conclusions) The data support a scenario where HI from the large reservoir available in the galaxy's surroundings was accreted by NGC5719 onto a retrograde orbit and subsequently fuelled the in-situ formation of the counter-rotating stellar disc.
