Dual Lepton Mass-Degeneracy-Deviation Quantities, Quasi-Degenerate Neutrinos and the Low Energy Fine Structure Constant

Exponential lepton flavor mass-ratio phenomenology with an extreme value problem for the neutrinos predicts small Quasi-Degenerate (QD) neutrino masses, m =(0.14-0.30)eV at 99% CL, and small solar-atmospheric oscillation hierarchy parameter, compatible with neutrino mass and oscillation data. An attempt is made to discover the physical meaning of the exponential exp5 which emerges as an empirical parameter in that description. Accurate relations between the data value of the fine structure constant and integer 5 are observed starting with a bare value exp(-5). This value as a physical constant unifies dimensionless low energy gauge and Higgs-scalar coupling constants of the lepton electroweak-theory-sector and QD-neutrino mass ratios in conformity with duality and hierarchy rules in the discussed phenomenology of lepton flavor physics.

Small Q-D neutrino masses from a generic lepton mass hierarchy

Exponential lepton mass ratios are studied in a low energy phenomenology. In view of the known data, the mass patterns of the charged leptons and widely discussed quasi-degenerate neutrinos are related to one another by two different traits - opposite mass ratios with large versus small exponents, and probably conformable mass-degeneracy-deviation hierarchies. The solar-atmospheric hierarchy parameter should have a special physical meaning in the Q-D neutrino scenario. A general generic hierarchy equation with two opposite solutions respectively for the charged lepton and neutrino mass ratios is considered. It determines a small upper bound on the Q-D neutrino mass scale, with estimations: m = 0.30 eV at 90% C.L., and m = 0.18 eV at best-fit mass-squared differences.

Quasi-Degenerate Neutrino Masses in Terms of Mass-Squared Differences

The absolute neutrino masses are obtained in terms of the atmospheric and solar mass-squared differences within the framework of low energy phenomenology by suggestion of a quantitative analogy between the hierarchies of the neutrino and charged lepton mass ratios. It points to a quasi-degenerate three neutrino mass pattern with the neutrino mass scale likely located in the range 0.1 -- 0.3 eV, and best-fit value m = 0.18 -- 0.20 eV. Restrictions on the neutrino mass scale from the WMAP data are considered. Possible indirect evidence in favor of quasi-degenerate neutrino masses is noted.

$ν- K^0$ Analogy, Dirac-Majorana Neutrino Duality and the Neutrino Oscillations

The intent of this paper is to convey a new primary physical idea of a Dirac-Majorana neutrino duality in relation to the topical problem of neutrino oscillations. In view of the new atmospheric, solar and the LSND neutrino oscillation data, the Pontecorvo $ν- K^0$ oscillation analogy is generalized to the notion of neutrino duality with substantially different physical meaning ascribed to the long-baseline and the short-baseline neutrino oscillations. At the level of CP-invariance, the suggestion of dual neutrino properties defines the symmetric two-mixing-angle form of the widely discussed four-neutrino $(2+2)$-mixing scheme, as a result of the lepton charge conservation selection rule and a minimum of two Dirac neutrino fields. With neutrino duality, the two-doublet structure of the Majorana neutrino mass spectrum is a vestige of the two-Dirac-neutrino origin. The fine neutrino mass doublet structure is natural because it is produced by a lepton charge symmetry violating perturbation on a zero-approximation system of two twofold mass-degenerate Dirac neutrino-antineutrino pairs. A set of inferences related to the neutrino oscillation phenomenology in vacuum is considered.

Neutrino Flavor Tagging in a Four-Neutrino Mixing and Oscillation Model

A neutrino mass dominance quantity is introduced for tagging the neutrino flavor in the phenomenological two-parameter four neutrino mixing matrix with two neutrino mass doublets and thorough maximal neutrino doublet mixing. While there is no hierarchy of the neutrino masses in the neutrino flavor eigenstates of this model, it may rather be a special hierarchy of the mass dominance ratios in these eigenstates. A neutrino flavor hierarchy condition is suggested: a direct link between the neutrino flavor and the flavor of the charged leptons which interconnects the two mixing angles, theta and phi, via the charged lepton mass ratios, with the net result tg^2 phi = (tg^2 theta)^gamma, gamma ~ 2.06. It leads to distinct inferences testable at SNO and Super-K.

Two Majorana Neutrino Mass Doublets with Thorough Maximal Doublet Mixing from an Analogy with the K^0-Meson Oscillations

In the recent note we argued that most of the available positive and negative neutrino oscillation data can be incorporated in a four-neutrino weak interaction model with one physical condition: thorough maximal mixing of the neutrino components in each of the two mass doublets. On the level of CP-invariance an extended Pontecorvo analogy between the neutrino oscillations and the K^0-meson oscillations, which implied maximal violation of the lepton charge conservation in the neutrino mass matrix exclusively, can afford a physical clue to the three data dictated assumptions in a model with three lepton flavors and only two 4-component neutrino generations: four phenomenological neutrinos with two neutrino mass doublets, one sterile neutrino in the oscillations, and thorough maximal neutrino doublet mixing. This analogy predicts that all the four neutrino mass eigenstates are of the Majorana type.

A Two Parameter Four Neutrino Mixing Model with an Exchange Symmetry of the Mass Doublet Neutrinos

In a model with four neutrino mass eigenstates grouping in two narrow doublets the condition of maximal mixing of the doublet neutrino components leads to a simple four-neutrino mixing matrix which is related to two connected effective two-neutrino mixing patterns. As a result, large values of the neutrino oscillation amplitudes for both the solar and atmospheric neutrino anomalies appear quite naturally if the LSND data are accepted.
